Today, the world-famous musical group the Beatles are releasing a new song called “Now and Then”. The “new” song was written around 45 years ago, and has taken a very long time to finish. It’s special because it’s the last song the Beatles will ever make.
The Beatles were a British rock band that was extremely popular in the 1960s and 70s. The four members of the band were John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The Beatles broke up as a group in 1970, but all of the band members continued to make music on their own. But now, only two of the band members, Mr. McCartney and Mr. Starr, are still alive.
In 1980, John Lennon was killed. But in the years before that, he recorded “demos” (rough versions) of several new songs. In 1994, Mr. Lennon’s wife, Yoko Ono, passed the tape along to Mr. McCartney. The tape had demos of Mr. Lennon playing and singing several songs, including “Now and Then”.
In 1995, the three living Beatles got together again and began to work on recording new versions of Mr. Lennon’s demos. They recorded some music for “Now and Then”, but unable to finish the song. The recording of Mr. Lennon singing had a loud electric humming sound that meant it couldn’t be used on a finished record. But in June of this year, Mr. McCartney announced the Beatles would soon be releasing one final song “Now and Then”. New computer methods had made it possible to separate out Mr. Lennon’s voice and clean up the recording to get rid of the hum.
Mr. McCartney wrote more verses to complete the song, He also worked together with Mr. Starr to add new bass, drums, and vocal parts to the song. Mr. Harrison died in 2001, but the group was able to use some of the guitar parts he had recorded in 1995.
The result is the last Beatles song ever. “We all play on it,” said Mr. McCartney. “It’s a genuine Beatles recording.”
4. What makes the song “Now and Then” unusual

C. It is made by the famous rock band the Beatles.
D It is produced before the Beatles broke up.

C. The three living Beatles working together again.
D. Using the guitar parts recorded by late Mr. Harrison.
6. How is the text mainly developed
A. By giving examples. B. By analyzing causes.
C. By following time order. D. By comparing differences.
7 What does Mr. McCartney mean by saying “We all play on it”

B. The Beatles recorded the song in a studio together.
C. The Beatles finished the song in honor of Lennon.

When it comes to entrepreneurship (企业家), it seems like a lot of us are fond of the idea of NOT getting more education. Sure, we’ve all heard how Bill Gates and Steve Jobs dropped out of college to found Microsoft and Apple, respectively. A lot of would-be solopreneurs (独立创业者) think this means they should take the same course, putting education by the wayside to chase their business goals.
Now, I’m not saying that you need a college degree to be a successful entrepreneur. But all too often, people take these famous examples a step too far and decide they don’t need to further their education in any way.
The thing is, college isn’t the only place you can get an education. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs learned a lot outside their classroom settings to turn their companies into the global successes they are today. When it comes to entrepreneurship, the most successful people are generally the ones who develop a lifelong love of learning. It’s an feature worth imitating.
When we think of “exercise,” most of us think of sweaty people at the gym running on treadmills and lifting weights. We don’t think of hitting the books. But the brain is actually a muscle too. And just like you need those physical workouts so you don’t start getting saggy (松驰的) around the middle, you need to give your brain regular “workouts” that keep it active and healthy.
Contrary to popular belief, your brain doesn’t stop growing after adolescence. One recent study found that the brain continues to produce new neurons associated with learning, emotion and memory throughout adulthood. Of course, the outcomes of this ongoing development depend in part on your own efforts.
If you’re not feeling motivated to work out your brain, it might be helpful to consider the costs of not continuing to learn. Quite simply, the problems you have now-whether in business or other areas of your life—are going to continue to exist if you don’t find new ways to approach them. The things you learn will help you discover new solutions and think more creatively. When done right, training your brain can become a lifelong habit—just like going for a morning run or hitting the gym at the end of the work day.
8. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs
A. It is no use obtaining college degree. B. It is not necessary to further our education.
C. It is more important to chase business goals. D. It is vital to view these successful examples sensibly.
9. What does the underlined phrase “hitting the books” mean in paragraph 4
A. Getting rid of the books. B. Diving into the books.
C. Purchasing the books. D. Referring to the books.
10. What can we know about the brain from this passage
A. The brain can be active by continuous learning. B. The brain can produce new neurons all the life.
C. Working out the brain can solve all the problems. D. Working out the brain will cost you a lot.
11. What is the main idea of the passage
A. The brain is of significance to our health. B. Keeping reading books is highly recommended.
C Nonstop learning should be a lifelong habit. D. It is important to develop a passion for learning.
D
In endurance athletes, some brain power may come from an unexpected source. Marathon runners appear to rely on myelin (髓磷脂), the fatty tissue around nerve fibers, for energy during a race, scientists report in a paper posted at bioRxiv. org. In the day or two following a marathon, this tissue seems to decrease sharply, brain scans of runners reveal. Two weeks after the race, the brain fat returns back to nearly prerace levels. The finding suggests the athletes burn so much energy running that they need a new fuel supply to keep the brain operating smoothly.
“This is certainly an interesting observation,” says Mustapha Bouhrara, a neuroimaging scientist at the National Institute on Aging in Baltimore. “It is quite reasonable that myelin lipids (脂类) are used as fuel in extended exercise.”
Carlos Matute, a neurobiologist in Leioa, Spain, had been curious how people’s brains continued working after intense exercise used up energy reserves in the body.
Using an MRI, his team scanned the brains of four marathon runners in the days before and after the race, and two of the runners two weeks later. A day or two after the race, the team saw a reduction in the amount of myelin in the brain. That suggested the myelin around nerve fibers had thinned. After two weeks, much of the myelin had returned, thickening again around neural fibers.
This drastic result gives Bouhrara pause. Matute and colleagues used water trapped between layers of myelin as an indicator for myelin content. More of this water indicates more myelin. But Bouhrara assumes if runners are dehydrated (脱水) after their race, their brain tissues may just be dried out.
It’s a point Matute has heard before. But he insisted that was not the case. His team scanned the runners days after their race, so they had time to rehydrate (再吸收水分). What’s more, the runners’ brain volumes stayed nearly the same before and after the marathon. Now, his team is following the thread of their findings to see if the runners’ myelin dip alters brain function, and how long it takes to recover completely.
12. What do we know about myelin according to the first two paragraphs
A. Myelin declines rapidly during the marathon.
B. Myelin supplies energy in extended exercise.
C. Myelin returns to prerace levels quickly.
D. Myelin is the fatty tissue taking in energy,
13. Why did Matute use water between layers of myelin
A. To trap the water between layers of myelin. B. To indicate the content of myelin.
C. To hydrate the marathon runners. D. To keep the brain tissue from drying out.
14. What is Bouhrara’s attitude towards Matute’s research finding
A. Skeptical. B. Supportive. C. Unconcerned. D. Neutral.
15. According to Carlos Matute, the next step of his study is to ________.
A. Confirm their findings with the existing thread.
B. Research further on the runners’brain volumes.
C. Study whether the myelin dip alters brain function.
D Test how long the runner needs to recover completely.

Every Saturday, Bibi hung out at her grandma’s laundry and dry-cleaning store while her mom worked. Bibi loved being with her grandma, but she wanted to do more than just draw and read. “How about I write down what people bring in and pin a number to it ” Bibi offered. With Grandma nearby, she did fine. But the next order was an enormous bedspread. Bibi checked it in, but when she went to lift it off the counter, it wouldn’t move. She tried moving it, but it toppled over on her. “I’m OK!” She giggled from under the soft material. Grandma lifted the bedspread off her and smiled. “Why don’t you draw for a little while,” she suggested. “You’re such a good artist”. Bibi sighed. “But I wanted to help you.” Grandma didn’t want her to handle the hot presser or the iron. She could put the stiff cardboard into the ready washed shirts, but that was about it. “Why don’t you draw a picture of more customers coming in ” Grandma joked. “Maybe that would help!”
Bibi went outside. It was a clear fall day. The last leaves were starting their lazy drift to the ground. She spotted her babysitter, Stephanie. Stephanie was painting big letters on the window of the hardware store. “Stephanie!” Bibi called. “You’re going to get in trouble.” Stephanie laughed. “The high-school cheerleading (啦啦队) is painting windows for our football game next weekend. Some of the shop owners said we could.”
“Does that paint wash off ” Bibi asked. “Yep. It’s just cornstarch (玉米淀粉), soap, and food coloring,” said Stephanie. Bibi saw other kids from the high school painting designs on windows up and down the street. GO, TIGERS said the window of the nail salon in huge letters. HEAR US ROAR! said the window of the milkshake shop. “I can help you!” Bibi called to Stephanie, her heart beating fast. “I can draw!” “Sorry, Bibi,” Stephanie said. “I’m out of paint, and I have to get home. Thank you, though!” Bibi was so disappointed. She stared at Grandma’s windows. They were bare.

9 What does the underlined phrase “hitting the books” mean in paragraph 4
A. Getting rid of the books. B. Diving into the books.
C Purchasing the books.
C. Nonstop learning should be a lifelong habit. D. It is important to develop a passion for learning.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. C

D. Test how long the runner needs to recover completely.
【答案】12. B 13. B 14. A 15. C

【答案】Suddenly an idea burst into Bibi’s head. After asking permission, Bibi went to the market and bought a small box of cornstarch and a package of food coloring. Then She mixed cornstarch and soap from Grandma, stirring them until they were thick like paint. Everything was in place. She wrote her message, outlining the words with washable black markers on the windows. Using her biggest brush, she filled in the letters with different colors. Then came the fun part. She took extra time drawing the picture.
When she was finished, Bibi went inside to get Grandma. When they came back out, a bunch of kids were gathered there. “Great job!” said one girl. “Perfect,” said another. Bibi’s grandmother looked up at the window to see what it was with pride. AFTER THE GAME, BRING YOUR UNIFORMS HERE! the window said. Bibi had drawn a picture of the team’s uniforms jumping into a big tub with soap bubbles. Grandma clapped her hands and hugged Bibi. “This just might help,” she said. And after the game, it did.
