Q3. When do we put the -ing form before the noun it modifies and when do we put it after
If we use one single -ing form to modify a noun, we usually put it before the noun. If the -ing form plus other words is used to modify a noun, it is usually put after the noun.
When the -ing as attributive is just a word,it will be placed before the modified word. When the -ing as attributive is a phrase,it will be placed after the modified word.
(1)He is an ___________ player.
(2)He asked an ____________question.
(3)Do you know the number of people_______________.
(4)The boy _______________is my classmate.
attacking
embarrassing
coming to the party
standing by the window
When the -ing as attributive is a phrase, it will be placed after the modified word. And the meaning of it is just like that of attributive clause.
①They lived in a room facing the street.
= They lived in a room that faces the street.
他们住在一间面朝街的房子。
②The man standing there is Peter’s father.

The landscape that lines the route is beautiful and dramatic, with snowy mountains and green valleys. There is no doubt that the Bernina Express is a journey for travellers who want to get back to nature: the train window becomes the TV screen, and the natural world is the show.

Focus on the expressions to ask for and give information.
G: Good morning.
R: Hello there. How can I help you
G: Well, it’s my first visit to this town. What would you suggest I see
R: I’d suggest starting with the History Museum. It has some great displays of ancient objects found in the local area.
G: That sounds good. Where is it
R: Here’s a map of the town. This is the hotel. Head across the square to the town hall. Walk around the town hall, and you’ll see the History Museum behind it, right between the theatre and the sports centre.
G: When does it open
R: It opens at half past nine in the morning.
G: Great! And could you recommend anywhere to eat
Focus on the expressions to ask for and give information.
R: Oh yes, there are lots of good restaurants in the town centre. You could go to this one here. It’s called Paul’s Restaurant and it serves delicious fish and chips. It’s on East Road, next to the post office.
G: That’s perfect because I’d like to send some postcards, too.
R: Is there anything else I can help you with
G: Actually, I’m here for four days. Are there any events happening in town or nearby
R: Well, you’ve arrived just in time for the boat race between Oxford and Cambridge universities. It starts tomorrow afternoon and takes place on the River Thames in West London.
G: That sounds great. How will I know which team is which
R: Oh, that’s easy—Oxford always wears dark blue and Cambridge light blue.
Focus on the expressions to ask for and give information.
G: OK. How can I get there
R: The train station is near the hotel, at the end of Rose Road. After you get to London, I’d recommend taking the tube to Putney Bridge and watching the race from there. Make sure to get there early so that you get a good view!
G: Thank you so much. You’re very helpful.
R: Enjoy your stay. Bye!

When you visit a place for the first time, a map is great help for you to know the place better. An online map on your mobile phone is convenient. But if you don’t have net connection when you travel, a paper map is still an option.
You would be able to find one in your hotel or at the local tourist information centre. When someone is giving you directions, try to mark your destinations and draw the routes to them on the map.

Part 1 buy souvenir
Part 2 find information on the history of Tirano
Part 3 taste famous local food
I was wondering where I can buy some souvenir./ Could you please tell me how I can get to...
I’m very curious about Tirano’s history. Can you recommend some place where I can know more about its history
Could you recommend any restaurant where I can taste famous local food
You could go to the shopping center. Go along the Cherry Street and take the first turning on your right. Then go along the Water Street and you’ll see the Shopping Centre at the end of it.
I’d recommend visiting the library. It is on the Green Street. Go along the South Street and take the first turning on you left. Then you’ll see it right there.
There’re lots of good restaurants in the town. You could go to this one here. It’s called John’s Pizza. Go along the Cherry Street and you’ll see it on your left, next to the Petrol Station.
As a local resident in Tirano, it is my pleasure to give you some suggestions about how to visit this town. Here are my recommendations.
First of all, I would suggest starting with the Science Museum. There are various displays, especially high-tech products. In the interactive experience area, you can experience 5G with the latest mobile phones provided by the museum. Some experts in this field will give some lectures about the development of 5G.
It’s at the end of High Street. Go straight along the Cherry Street and take the first turning on your right. Then go along the Water Street and take the second turning on your right. You will see the museum next to the shopping center. It opens at half past eight in the morning and closes at five o’clock in the afternoon.
Besides, if you are interested in natural scenery, the East Park is you best choice. The park is opposite to the Science Museum. It is the biggest park in Tirano. There is a beautiful lake in the centre of the park. Everyday there are lots of people jogging around the lake.
It opens at six o’clock in the morning and closes at half past nine in the evening. Luckily, you’ve arrived just in time for the Music Funhill Festival. It starts tomorrow afternoon and takes place in the park. A lot of famous singers will perform their songs on the stage by the lake. If you are a music fan, you can’t miss it.
Before leaving the city, you can go to the Shopping Centre. It is at the end of the Water Street. It opens at eight o’clock in the morning and closes at nine o’clock in the evening. In additon to the common goods like clothes, there are all sorts of native specialties, where you can choose unique souvenir for your relatives and friends.
What’s more, if you want to share your travel with them, you can also buy and send some postcards to them. There are various picture postcards in the supermarket. What makes them unique is the beautiful local scenery on the postcards.
Those are my suggestions. Hope my advice is helpful and enjoy your stay!
