“With the passing of Chinese scientist Yuan Longping, China and the world have lost one greatest agricultural scientists,” said Kenneth Quinn, president of the World Food Prize Foundation (基金会). Quinn also shared his memory of the “father of hybrid rice” in an interview with Xinhua on Sunday.
Quinn first met Yuan in October 2004, when Yuan traveled to Des Moines in the U.S. state of Iowa to receive the World Food Prize. As they walked out of the airport, Quinn received a call and stepped aside to speak. When he turned back a minute or two later, he lost Yuan. “I had never before ‘lost’ a laureate (贵人),” he said. After an anxious search, he found Professor Yuan surrounded by a group of smiling graduate students from Iowa State University who so admired him that they wanted to take him off for a meal and conversation.
Quinn admired Yuan as a teacher. “He always had time to answer questions and speak with young scientists and students. The American high school students we sent to his research center each year always returned filled with knowledge and a deep desire to learn more.”
In Quinn’s eyes, Yuan was incredibly modest, never seeking fame, and focused only on hard work and results that could help lift people out of poverty. With a ‘down to earth’ attitude, Yuan greatly reduced hunger and provided farmers with surplus (多余的) income through his discovery of hybrid rice.
Learning of Yuan’s passing away on Saturday, Quinn issued a statement to send his deepest sympathy to Yuan’s family and colleagues. “Professor Yuan Longping, who was truly beloved in his country and by all of us who knew him, will be greatly missed. His legacy will provide inspiration to generations far into the future, in China and across the world,” Quinn said in the statement.
4. How did Kenneth Quinn feel when he found Yuan in a group of students
A. Confused B. Sorry C. Angry. D. Amazed
5. How did Yuan Longping treat young people
A. He sent young students abroad for further study.
B. He cared about the development of the youth.
C. He was too busy to answer the students’ question.
D. He was generous to help young people out of poverty.
6. What do the words “down to earth” mean in paragraph 4
A. Critical. B. General. C. Flexible. D. Realistic.
7. What is the purpose of the text
A. To inspire the young. B. To tell the stories of Yuan Longping.
C. To introduce the “father of hybrid rice”. D. To remember Professor Yuan Longping.

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology may soon be a useful tool for doctors. For example, it may help them better understand and treat diseases like breast cancer (乳腺癌) in ways that were not possible.
Rishi Rawat teaches AI at a University in Los Angeles. He is part of a team of scientists who are researching how AI and machine learning can more easily recognize cancerous growths in the breast. He says, “You put information about cancer cells (细胞) into a computer and it will learn the cancerous growth patterns. The pattern recognition is very important to making decisions.”
At present, researchers have to take a thin piece of tissue (组织), put it on a small piece of glass and add color to better see the cell-growth patterns. That process could take days or even longer. Scientists say artificial intelligence can do it better than just count cells. Through machine learning, it can quickly recognize patterns, or structures, and learn how the cells are organized.
The hope is that machines will soon be able to make a quick recognition of cancerous cell-growth patterns that is free of human mistakes. Rawat adds that the process could be done “for almost no cost for the patients”. But having a large amount of information about cells is important for a machine to effectively do its job. Once the cancerous growth pattern is recognized, doctors still have to treat the patient. The form of treatment depends on the kind of cancer.
David Agus is another researcher of the team. He believes, “Computers will help doctors make better decisions and look for those patterns that the human brain can’t recognize by itself. But they will not treat patients.”
8. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. The process of adding color to cells.
B. The process of taking a piece of tissue.
C. The process of recognizing the cell-growth.
D. The process of treating cancers by machine learning.
9. Why may AI technology be a useful tool
A. It treats breast cancer all by itself.
B. It provides free cancer treatment for the patients.
C. It recognizes the cancerous growth patterns faster.
D. It helps doctors make fewer mistakes in cancer treatment.
10. What can we know from David Agus’ words
A. AI will not replace doctors. B. AI will develop fast in the future.
C. AI can be useless in treating cancers. D. AI can provide the doctors with treatments.
11. What is the main idea of the text
A. AI makes better doctors. B. AI helps pattern recognition.
C. AI functions well in cancer growth. D. Future cancer treatments will be successful.
D
We are the products of evolution, and not just evolution that occurred billions of years ago. As scientists look deeper into our genes (基因), they are finding examples of human evolution in just the past few thousand years. People in Ethiopian highlands have adapted to living at high altitudes. Cattle -raising people in East Africa and northern Europe have gained a mutation (突变) that helps them digest milk as adults.
On Thursday in an article published in Cell, a team of researchers reported a new kind of adaptation - not to air or to food, but to the ocean. A group of sea-dwelling people in Southeast Asia have evolved into better divers. The Bajau, as these people are known, number in the hundreds of thousands in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. They have traditionally lived on houseboats; in recent times, they’ve also built houses on stilts (支柱) in coastal waters. “They are simply a stranger to the land,” said Redney C. Jubilado, a University of Hawaii researcher who studies the Bajau.
Dr. Jubilado first met the Bajau while growing up on Samal Island in the Philippines. They made a living as divers, spearfishing or harvesting shellfish. “We were so amazed that they could stay underwater much longer than us local islanders,” Dr. Jubilado said. “I could see them actually walking under the sea.”
In2015, Melissa Ilardo, then a graduate student in genetics at the University of Copenhagen, heard about the Bajau. She wondered if centuries of diving could have led to the evolution of physical characteristics that made the task easier for them. “it seemed like the perfect chance for natural selection to act on a population,” said Dr. Ilardo. She also said there were likely a number of other genes that help the Bajau dive.
12. What does the author want to tell us by the examples in paragraph 1
A. Environmental adaptation of cattle raisers. B. New knowledge of human evolution.
C. Recent findings of human origin. D. Significance of food selection.
13. Where do the Bajau build their houses
A. In valleys. B. Near rivers. C. On the beach. D. Off the coast.
14. Why was the young Jubilado astonished at the Bajau
A. They could walk on stilts all day. B. They had a superb way of fishing.
C They could stay long underwater. D. They lived on both land and water.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Bodies Remodeled for a Life at Sea B. Highlanders’ Survival Skills
C. Basic Methods of Genetic Research D. The World’s Best Divers

I’ve been working part-time as a babysitter in the past several weeks because I want to get a new cellphone. So far I’ve saved about 180 dollars. Yesterday afternoon, my eight- year-old sister Lily came to me while I was doing my homework in my room. “Jenny, can I borrow 10 dollars from you ” she asked. “No,” I said, thinking I myself needed more money for a new cell-phone.
Lily looked disappointed and left my room. About half an hour later, my friend Lisa called me and asked if I wanted to go skating with her. Since I had finished my home- work and had no plans for the rest of the day, I said I would go. Before I left, I got changed and put a $20 bill on my desk. Then I walked out of my room. In the sitting room I saw Lily watching TV on the couch.
“Are you going out ” she asked.
“Yes. I’m going skating with my friend Lisa. I’m coming back in about two hours,” I answered and hurriedly went out. I had great fun skating with Lisa and her two friends Mary and Anna. After we finished skating, Lisa suggested that we should have supper at a restaurant together. But I refused because I didn’t take any money with me. Besides, I wanted to save every coin for a new cellphone.
Lisa didn’t insist. She went to eat with Mary and Anna while I returned home. When I entered the house, I saw nobody there. I went to my room to get some clothes for a shower. However, after I entered my room, I noticed that the $20 bill on my desk was gone. I searched everywhere for it but in vain. I suddenly remembered that Lily had asked me for 10 dollars. And I didn’t give her the money.
So I thought she must have taken the $20 bill away. I became angry, rushed out of my room and looked for her everywhere in the house, but I couldn’t find her.

13 Where do the Bajau build their houses
A. In valleys. B. Near rivers. C. On the beach. D. Off the coast.
14. Why was the young Jubilado astonished at the Bajau
A. They could walk on stilts all day. B. They had a superb way of fishing.
C. They could stay long underwater. D. They lived on both land and water.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Bodies Remodeled for a Life at Sea B. Highlanders’ Survival Skills
C. Basic Methods of Genetic Research D. The World’s Best Divers
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. A

Learning to set goals plays an important role as your child starts to gain independence. However, setting goals doesn’t come naturally to your child, so helping him to learn the process should probably be one of your goals.
Explain the word “goal”. Your child may know what a goal is when it comes to soccer, but he may not understand what it means in everyday life. ___16___
Listen to your child. Ideally, you want your child to be able to decide for himself what his goals are. ____17____ Let him talk about what he thinks he does well and what he thinks he needs to improve. If he’s stuck, you can provide some examples of your own personal goals.
Help keep goals achievable. Don’t throw cold water on your child. ____18____ For example, if your child wants to be a champion swimmer, but can’t swim an entire lap of the pool yet, you can suggest he start by making that his first goal.
___19___ Help your child write down his goals in an easy to follow form. Being able to see and check off the steps on the way to his goal is key in keeping him motivated. A really simple way is to have your child draw a ladder on a piece of paper, writing his goal at the top and each step to that goal on the rungs (梯级). ___20___
A. Change goals every so often.
B. Make a visual goal reminder.
C. Don’t always tell him what you think.
D. He’s climbing to the top as he gets closer to his goal.
E. You can take sports as an example to help explain it to him.
F. Once he has set up a goal, he may find it very difficult to achieve it.
G. When a goal is beyond his reach, help him break it down into smaller pieces.

【18题详解】
根据空“For example, if your child wants to be a champion swimmer, but can’t swim an entire lap of the pool yet, you can suggest he start by making that his first goal.”(例如,你的孩子想成为游泳冠军,但是他还游不了池塘整圈,你可以建议他把这作为他的第一个目标。)可知,选项承接下文,说明要分解目标。break it down into smaller pieces呼应making that his first goal.故G选项(当目标超出他的能力范围时,帮助他把目标分成几步。)切题。故选G项。
【19题详解】
空缺的是本段的主题句,根据空后“Help your child write down his goals in an easy to follow form.”(帮助你的孩子以简单能懂的方式写下他的目标)所以这里选B(制作一个能看见的目标提示。)为本段的小标题。故选B项。
【20题详解】
空前“A really simple way is to have your child draw a ladder on a piece of paper, writing his goal at the top and each step to that goal on the rungs (梯级).”(一个很简单的方法就是在纸上画一个梯子,在顶部写下他的目标,在横木上写下通向目标的每一步)可知选项承接上文说明这么作的作用是什么。故D(他在向顶部爬梯时他在接近目标。)切题。故选D项。

Last week saw Culture Day on campus, whose theme was “The Beauty of Chinese Traditional Festivals”.
There were a variety of activities unfolding before us, ranging from the paper-cutting exhibition to hands-on experiences, where we learned to cook exclusive festival dishes and perform the lion dance. Additionally, an expert on folk culture impressed us with vivid stories behind festival origins and customs, some of which we had never known of.

【答案】Para 1:
Suddenly, the door opened and Lily entered the house, with a box in her hand. She looked at me and said, “Jenny, I’m sorry. I didn’t take your money. I was just trying to surprise you.” With that, she handed me the box. Curious, I opened it and found a new cellphone inside. “Where did you get this ” I asked, surprised. Lily smiled and said, “I saved up my allowance and asked mom to help me buy it for you. I know you’ve been wanting a new one.” I felt terrible and hugged her tightly, apologizing for my mistake.
Para 2:
Just then, my mother came in looking at both of us in surprise. After hearing what had happened, she smiled and said, “Jenny, sometimes we jump to conclusions too quickly. It’s important to always give people the benefit of the doubt.” She then turned to Lily and said, “You’re a very thoughtful little girl. I’m proud of you.” That day, I not only got a new cellphone, but also a valuable lesson about the importance of not jumping to conclusions and always giving people a chance to explain.
