Isabel Crook was born in Chengdu on 15 December 1915. On 20 August 2023 she died in Beijing at the age of 108. In 2019, she was awarded the Friendship Medal for her work at the Beijing Foreign Studies University, where she taught for seven decades, and where she developed China’s first English-language textbooks. Meeting students of Isabel in China is not a difficult task, since she trained and inspired millions of them to learn languages, including English.
In 2018, I had lunch with Isabel in Beijing. Over 100 years old, Isabel nonetheless had a bright light in her eyes. I worried that I would trouble her with my earnest questions. It was enough to enjoy the company of people like Isabel-sensitive and energetic people who believe that the world can be made a better place.
Curiosity about China’s rural development governed Isabel’s life. In 1939, she went to Bashinao in Sichuan Province to study village life and to teach literacy (识字). From 1931 to 1945, she worked in Xinglongchang to build an understanding of the rural struggles. In 1981, after she retired from teaching, Isabel returned to Xinglongchang, and in 2013, she published two books based on her research and studies there, showing what rural society was like during wartime. When I asked her about her important work on China’s agricultural transformation, she said, “One of the reasons to do these studies and to write these books was that they might inspire other peoples, in countries like China, such as India, to work along these lines.”
Isabel showed great concern for China’s rural development and devoted herself to English teaching with numerous students. She died peacefully with her faith in the international Communist cause, and her love for the Communist. Party of China and the Chinese people.
4. Why was Isabel awarded the Friendship Medal
A. She taught English in China for years.
B. She got on well with the Chinese people.
C. She loved the Communist Party of China.
D. She believed in the international Communist cause.
5. Which can be used to summarize Isabel’s personal quality according to paragraph 2
A. Independent. B. Honest. C. Dynamic. D. Generous.
6. What did Isabel do from 1981 to 2013
A. She taught English. B. She taught literacy.
C. She worked in India. D. She did her research.
7. Which typical writing features can you identify in the passage
A Quotes and photos are included.
B. The text provides details on how to teach.
C. The beginning tells about Isabel’s background.
D. The introduction follows the order of importance.
C
Every day, as I took long walks through North Vancouver, I would think about the potential joys of a physically closer network. Wouldn’t it be great to have someone who could join me at a moment’s notice How good would it be to have more non-scheduled hangs instead of ones that had to be planned weeks in advance
This doesn’t have to be just a dream. Although technology is making it easier to maintain long-distance connections, nothing can replace seeing friends in person. Researchers have found that happiness spreads “like an emotional contagion (传染)”, especially among those who live close together.
Friends who live in the same city could decide to move within walking distance of one another — the same neighborhood, block, or even apartment building. Doing so would likely involve a lot of effort, but the resulting community could pay emotional dividends for years. Doing so would make it easier to support one another materially and emotionally.
Moving close to your friends requires some masterminding. Cities can make doing so easier by ending single-family zoning codes and encouraging a variety of housing types in neighborhoods. But even without official policies, people can make it work on their own. Sam Unger, 32, a food scientist and a friend of mine, has created a chosen family like this in Montreal, where about 15 of her friends live within walking distance of one another. When someone moves away, they try to transfer (移交) their lease (租约) to other friends. And when pals based elsewhere in the city are looking to move, Unger will try selling them on the positives of her neighborhood and sometimes even look for housing for them. “It’s funny,” she told me. “The other day, I bought a fire extinguisher, and she’s like, ‘Oh, well, I have one. You could just call me if you had a fire, and I’d be right over with it.’”
8. What kind of lifestyle does the author prefer
A. Alone. B. Modern. C. Scheduled D. Free.
9. What does the underlined word “dividends” in paragraph 3 most probably mean
A. Needs. B. Benefits. C. States D. Effects.
10. Why does the author mention Sam Unger
A. To tell Sam Unger has a talent in business.
B. To prove people can move closer on their own.
C. To show how important the official policies are.
D. To suggest how one can get on well with others.
11. What’s the best title for the passage
A. Live Closer to Your Friends
B. The Internet Brings People Closer
C. A Way to Maintain Relationships
D. Technology Harms Friendships
D
In Sweden, many teachers have been putting emphasis (强调) on printed books, quiet reading time and handwriting practice, and devoting less time to tablets, independent online research and keyboarding skills.
The return to more traditional ways of learning is a response to experts questioning whether Sweden’s comprehensive (全面的) digitalised approach to education had led to a fall in basic skills.
Sweden’s minister for schools, Lotta Edholm, is one of the biggest critics (批评者) of the comprehensive acceptance of technology. “Sweden’s students need more textbooks,” he said, “Physical books are important for student learning.”
Although Sweden’s students score above the European average for reading ability, an international assessment of fourth-grade reading levels, the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), showed a drop among Sweden’s children between 2016 and 2021. In 2021, Swedish fourth graders averaged 544 points, a drop from the 555 average in 2016.
This may suggest a growing number of immigrant (移民) students who don’t speak Swedish as their first language, but overuse of screens during school lessons may cause youngsters to fall behind in subjects, education experts say.
The rapid adoption (采用) of digital learning tools also has drawn concern from UNESCO. In a report published in August, UNESCO issued a call for proper use of technology in education. The report calls countries to speed up Internet connections at schools, but at the same time warns that technology in education should be used in a way that never takes the place of in-person, teacher-led instruction.
In the Swedish capital, Stockholm, Liveon Palmer, a third grader at Djurgardsskolan elementary school, agreed with the idea of spending more school hours offline. “I like writing more in school, like on paper, because it just feels better,” he said.
12. According to many teachers in Sweden, how should technology be used
A. It should be used less in education.
B. Digital devices should be better used.
C. Teaching equipment should be updated or replaced.
D. More importance of it should be attached to education.
13. How is Sweden’s students’ reading level
A. It’s higher than in the past.
B. It’s above the world average.
C. It tends to fall in recent years.
D. It scores the highest in Europe.
14. What does UNESCO call on people to do
A. Avoid online safety risks.
B. Improve school networking.
C. Focus on face-to-face communication.
D. Carry on teacher-centered instruction.
15 What’s Sweden’s pupils’ view on online learning
A. They demand to spend more time offline independently.
B. They would use physical books rather than digital tools.
C. They would like to study offline when they are at home.
D. They prefer to stay offline to maintain healthy relationships.

Forty of us — each with black rubber suits and flippers, glass-windowed face masks, snorkels, lead-weighted belts and spearfishing guns — were waiting for the judge’s 9:00 a.m. whistle (哨子) to announce that the annual South Australian Spearfishing Championship competition had begun. We all had five hours to bring the judges a bag of fish. The winner would be determined both by total weight and by number of different species.
By 12:30, when I dragged a heavy catch of fish to the beach, I could see from the other piles that I must be well up in the competition. I had 27 kilograms of fish on shore, including 14 species. It was now 12:35, and the contest closed at 2:00 p.m. On my last swim I had spotted quite a few large fish near a big, triangular-shaped rock I was sure I could find again.
Two of these fish were dusky morwongs, or “strongfish.” Either of these would be large enough to tip the scales (天平) in my favour. I decided. I swam out to the spot I’d picked. After several deep breaths, I held one, turned over and dived.
I advanced forward, hoping for a closein shot, but…
Then something huge bit me with strong force on my left side and pulled me through the water. Now the “thing” was pushing me forward with wild speed. The pressure on my back and chest was heavy and I felt as if my insides on my left were being squeezed (挤) over to my right side. I had lost my face mask and couldn’t see in the dark. My spear gun was violently knocked out of my hand. How can I describe the sudden silence A shark had me in its jaws (嘴).
Its teeth had closed around my chest and back, with my left arm over its head. I was being pushed face down ahead of it as we raced through the water. I stretched (伸长) my arms out behind and felt for the monster’s head. Suddenly, magically, the pressure was gone. The creature had relaxed its jaws. As I pulled my arm loose from the shark’s teeth, I felt pain I could have never imagined. But I had succeeded in freeing myself.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Now there were noises, familiar voices and the boat I had been expecting would come.

Isabel Crook was born in Chengdu on 15 December 1915. On 20 August 2023, she died in Beijing at the age of 108.
In 1939 she went to Bashinao in Sichuan Province to study village life and to teach literacy (识字).

15. What’s Sweden’s pupils’ view on online learning

The pressure on my back and chest was heavy, and I felt as if my insides on my left were being squeezed (挤) over to my right side.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】Now there were noises, familiar voices and the boat I had been expecting would come. I shouted with all my strength, and the shark immediately released me. It swam away, and I slowly rose to the surface. The boat reached me quickly, and my friends helped me onto the deck. I was exhausted and in a lot of pain, but I was alive.
After I got recovered, I developed the idea for a protective steel cage that could be lowered into the water. I knew firsthand how terrifying it was to be attacked by a shark while spearfishing, and I wanted to find a way to make the sport safer. With the help of some engineers, I designed a cage that would surround the spearfisher and protect them from shark bites. The cage was made of strong steel and had bars that were small enough to allow the spearfisher to aim and shoot their weapon, but too small for a shark to get through.
