It was June when I visited America’s most famous pond, Walden, in Massachusetts. It was still too early for the summer crowds of beach goers and holidaymakers. The only people besides photographer Tim Laman and me were a few swimmers and a lone runner taking in the morning fresh air. At the moment, Walden had the air of peace Henry David Thoreau so greatly prized.
Thoreau built his cabin here in 1845 as a place to write, and a river of thoughts and words began to flow, continuing for 17 years until his death. More than two hundred years after his birth on July 12, 1817, his words still inspire: “I come to the woods because I wish to understand the most important facts of life. I don’t want to discover that I have not lived when I die.”
I still have a T-shirt printed with ants and such words: “It is not enough to be busy. So are the ants. The question is: What are we busy about ”
What I have come to love most about Thoreau is that for him the natural world speaks not only in grand settings like beautiful mountains and ancient forests, but also in ordinary places like ponds, parks and backyards.
“I come to my woodland walk as the homesick go home,” wrote Thoreau in his journal. So it has been for those who follow in his philosophical footsteps: We find ourselves wedded to the world wherever we happen to be.
My place of solitude (独处) is a path in urban Auckland, New Zealand. I walk there in the same spirit that Thoreau walked his woodland trails, enjoying a conversation with nature within earshot of a highway.
For Thoreau, such moments usually happened when he was alone. For this kind of walking, Thoreau preferred the word “awakening”: shaking off social and cultural burdens to enjoy the wildness of the natural world. This was Thoreau’s conclusion after his two-year stay in the woods, and this was his conclusion to Walden.
4 When did Henry David Thoreau pass away
A. In 1817. B. In 1834. C. In 1845. D. In 1862.
5. What do the words printed on the author’s T-shirt most probably mean
A. Everyone should be as busy as ants. B. We should have a purpose in our life.
C. Ants’ work should not be questioned. D. Workable schedules are very important.
6. What can be inferred from paragraphs 4 and 5
A. Henry David Thoreau might just happen to find Walden.
B. Walden was America’s most famous pond in the 1820s.
C. Peace of mind can only be found in beautiful places.
D. We should be dissatisfied with what life gives us.
7. Which of the following best describes the author’s “Walden”
A. Wild. B. Deep. C. Noisy. D. Dangerous.
C
On the second floor of Minke van Wingerden’s floating farm in Rotterdam, the cows sometimes wander over to a machine that automatically milks them, or shy out of the way of a robot removing their waste that will be turned into organic fertilizer for the vegetables grown on the first floor.
“We call our farm recycling lady,” says Minke van Wingerden, who has recently opened a small shop on dry land next to the floating farm to sell the vegetables, milk, cheese and butter produced there.
Floating farming isn’t an entirely new idea. Efforts to put agriculture on or in the water are as old as the Aztecs, who built artificial islands to grow food long ago in what’s now Mexico.
But it’s a concept that is getting new attention as a way of dealing with both food security and the challenges of climate change. And it doesn’t have to be as well-equipped as Wingerden’s floating farm, which came about after she witnessed the food shortages in New York after Hurricane Sandy hit the city in 2012.
“When you have floating farms, you are climate adaptive,” said Wingerden. “It is also sensible for you to take fresher, healthier food close to cities.”
Daniel Petrovics, a researcher at the University of Amsterdam, said the success of floating farms will vary by region.
“Contributing to the sustainability of urban food systems is a challenge floating farms have in common with vertical (垂直的) farms. I don’t think this project is cost-effective enough to be popularized, either,” he said. “As a method to adapt to climate change, it is much cheaper to invest in floating housing rather than floating farms since much of the world’s population lives in coastal areas, while only a small percentage of these communities farm in areas that might be threatened by sea level rise caused by climate change.”
8. Why are the Aztecs mentioned in the text
A. To add some background information. B. To sum up the above paragraphs.
C. To introduce the topic for discussion. D. To provide advice for the farmers.
9. What is Minke van Wingerden’s main goal of setting up the floating farm
A. To recycle the waste in cities. B. To increase urban food security.
C. To compete with vertical farming. D. To find a low-cost farming method.
10. What did Daniel Petrovics say about the vertical farms
A. They are very likely to be widely adopted in cities.
B. They are a practical solution to urban food shortage.
C. They are too costly to be popularized in the near future.
D. They can be helpful in the fight against climate change.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Are Floating Farms the Future B. Are Organic Products Healthier
C. How Can We Produce Enough Food D. What Are Floating Farms’ Advantages
D
In our daily life, it has never been easier to understand time: The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) broadcasts the time to points across the country and then it’s fed through computer networks and cellphone towers to our personal devices. The time from NIST keeps society organized and increases economic productivity.
“Growing up, a lot of us are fed with this concept of absolute time,” says Chanda Prescod Weinstein, a theoretical physicist at the University of New Hampshire. “But the time we’re experiencing is a social construct. Real time is something quite different. In some of the corners of the Universe, space and time can stretch and slow-and sometimes even break down completely.”
For many people, his idea of time is unbelievable. But true time is actually much more flexible than most people realize. According to Einstein’s general theory of relativity, space and time are tied together, and space-time can bend and curve (弯曲). As time stretches, it slows.
The best-known force that stretches time is gravity. The more gravity somebody experiences, the slower time passes for them when compared to someone in a lower gravitational field. In places where gravity is very strong, time as we understand can break down completely. At the edge of black holes, for example, the gargantuan gravitational pull slows time dramatically.
“Upon crossing the black hole’s point of no return, known as its event-horizon, you end up in a region where time breaks down entirely, ”Weinstein says. “At that point time has no real meaning. There is no direction. There is no future. ”
The scientists at NIST are well aware of all the problems with time. “Just as humans keep improving their maps, we must improve our clocks. Better clocks can make GPS more accurate, computer networks faster, and much, much more,” says John Kitching, one of the NIST scientists. “But it’s pretty hard to define time in a satisfactory way.”
Kitching agrees with Weinstein that time as we experience it is a technology rather than a fundamental part of the Universe. “From a physics sense, it doesn’t have that much value,” he concludes.
12. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The problems with NIST time. B. The need to keep time accurate.
C. The challenges to define time. D. The strange features of real time.
13. What does the word “gargantuan” underlined in paragraph 4 mean
A. Powerful. B. Gentle. C. Straight. D. Careless.
14. What will happen to time at the event-horizon
A. It will be tied to space. B. It becomes totally meaningless.
C. It just points to the future. D. It usually slows down sharply.
15. According to the text, the time from NIST is ______.
A. based on the real time B. of little value
C. a man-made measurement D. hard to understand

We had a garden in our backyard and I always watered the flowers together with my little sister, Laynie. She had her own watering cans and small shovels so she could ”work“ with me. One day, I showed her how to grow flowers: Dig a hole. Put in a few seeds. Cover them up with dirt. Water them every two or three days.
“See Laynie,” I explained to her, “Beautiful flowers will grow from these tiny seeds in a few months.”
The next day, after everything was watered, she ran to the fence and started watering another spot. I walked over and saw some fresh dirt near the fence.
“Did you plant something here ” I asked.
“Yes,” she said. “I’m growing a pencil. My pencil got too short, so I planted it.”
“But. . . ”
I wanted to laugh and tell her the truth, but I changed my mind and said, “Uh. . . I had never tried that before.”
Late in the evening when Laynie was asleep, I dug up the short pencil and “planted” a brand-new one. Laynie was really excited when she dug it up the next morning.
“My pencil grew!” she shouted.
A few days later, Laynie was watering on the same spot. One day later, new crayons stuck their pointy little heads out, thanks to me.
“My crayons grew, too!” Laynie yelled, jumping up and down.
Next, Laynie grew an adult bear doll from a tiny one, a soup spoon from a teaspoon, and a hand mirror from a piece of glass. When she claimed that she had grown these things, I just kept my mouth shut! Actually, it was fun trying to think of what should grow from Laynie’s magic “seeds”. And it was cool to see her get excited.
One morning, I saw her carrying our little gold fish to the fence. I knew immediately what she was going to do and rushed to its rescue.
“How long does it take to grow a big goldfish ” she asked me seriously.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

4. When did Henry David Thoreau pass away
A. In 1817. B. In 1834. C. In 1845. D. In 1862.
A. Wild. B. Deep. C. Noisy. D. Dangerous.

C To compete with vertical farming.
A 9. B 10. C 11. A

根据第四段的“And it doesn’t have to be as well-equipped as Wingerden’s floating farm, which came about after she witnessed the food shortages in New York after Hurricane Sandy hit the city in 2012.(而且它不一定要像温格登的水上农场那样装备精良。2012年飓风桑迪袭击纽约后,温格登目睹了纽约的粮食短缺)”以及第五段““When you have floating farms, you are climate adaptive,” said Wingerden. “It is also sensible for you to take fresher, healthier food close to cities.” (“当你有水上农场时,你就能适应气候,”温格登说。“在城市附近吃更新鲜、更健康的食物也是明智的。”)”可知,Minke van Wingerden认为建立水上农场的主要目标是加强城市粮食的安全性。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的“I don’t think this project is cost-effective enough to be popularized, either,” he said.
通读全文以及最后一段的“Contributing to the sustainability of urban food systems is a challenge floating farms have in common with vertical (垂直的) farms. I don’t think this project is cost-effective enough to be popularized, either,” he said.(“为城市粮食系统的可持续性做出贡献是水上农场与垂直农场共同面临的挑战。我认为这个项目的成本效益也不足以推广,”他说)”可知,文章主要介绍了阿姆斯特丹的一家水上农场以及专家对水上农场的质疑。由此可知,“水上农场是未来的趋势吗?”适合作本文的标题。故选A。
D 13. A 14. B 15. C

根据第三段“For many people, his idea of time is unbelievable. But true time is actually much more flexible than most people realize. According to Einstein’s general theory of relativity, space and time are tied together, and space-time can bend and curve (弯曲). As time stretches, it slows. (对许多人来说,他的时间观念是难以置信的。但真正的时间实际上比大多数人意识到的要灵活得多。根据爱因斯坦的广义相对论,空间和时间是紧密相连的,时空可以弯曲和弯曲。随着时间的延长,它变慢了)”可知,本段主要是介绍相对时间的一些奇特属性,比如它和空间纠缠在一起、它能弯曲及变慢等。故选D。
【13题详解】
词义猜测题。根据画线词前“The more gravity somebody experiences, the slower time passes for them when compared to someone in a lower gravitational field. (一个人受到的引力越大,与处于较低引力场中的人相比,他们的时间过得越慢。)”及画线词后“slows time dramatically.(减慢了时间)”可推断,gargantuan意为“强大的”,因为只有重力非常大时,时间才会显著变慢。A. Powerful强大的;B. Gentle温和的;C. Straight笔直的;D. Careless粗心的。故选A。
根据第五段中“At that point time has no real meaning. There is no direction. There is no future. (在那个时候,时间没有真正的意义。没有方向。没有未来。)”可知,在event-horizon时间会变得毫无意义。 故选B。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Kitching agrees with Weinstein that time as we experience it is a technology rather than a fundamental part of the Universe. (Kitching同意Weinstein的观点,即我们所经历的时间是一种技术,而不是宇宙的基本组成部分)”可知,NIST报出的绝对时间只是一种非常有用的“人造物”。但它根本不是宇宙的基本属性。故选C。

【答案】My Favorite Song
My favorite song is “The Tiny Grass”. Whenever I hear the song, I will smile and picture the days I shared with my grandmother.
Since she learned to sing this song, she kept singing it on various occasions. She sang it when she was planting flowers in the garden or riding bikes on Saturday afternoons with me. Though she never said it, I believe the song reminded her to be grateful for something as simple as the warm wind and sunshine in spring. My grandmother passed away years ago, but the song still lives on with me.

“See, Laynie,” I explained to her, “Beautiful flowers will grow from these tiny seeds in a few months.”

I couldn’t answer her question immediately.

“No!” my baby sister screamed and burst into tears.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I couldn’t answer her question immediately. When she was digging, I sat down with my back to the fence and struggled to come up with an idea that could save the poor fish while not disappoint my baby sister. Sighing, I decided there was only one right thing I could do. I got up and took out all those things she had planted and put the short pencil, the crayons, the teaspoon... on the ground.
“No!” my baby sister screamed and burst into tears. I swallowed hard and gently held her in my arms and apologized. While Laynie was crying, I explained that we could only grow things from seeds and that if she put our gold fish in the soil, it would die very soon. After she calmed down, she looked at me for a few seconds as if thinking about something. Then she went inside the house and returned with the seeds of her favorite flowers. This time, I thought she would have a real harvest.
