It was a bright and sunny day. Keegan and I arranged to spend the afternoon at his place. Eager to show me his large collection of toys, he took me to his room. Among all the toys, his most treasured one was a model aeroplane. Keegan said it was a gift from his uncle who worked as a pilot.
I wanted to take a closer look so I asked Keegan if I could hold it in my hands. He graciously agreed. Knowing how easily broken the aeroplane was, I carefully removed it from the display cabinet. Just as I was putting it back, I sneezed. “Snap!”One of the wings of the model aeroplane broke in my hands.
When Keegan saw this, tears welled up in his eyes. Soon, tears started to roll down his cheeks uncontrollably. With my head hung low, I rushed out of his house as I did not know how to comfort him.
For the next few days, I stayed out of Keegan’s way in school. I was worried that he would still be angry with me. Feeling sad without his company, I built up the courage to approach Keegan after school one day. I told Keegan, “I am so sorry for breaking your valuable aeroplane. ”
“It’s okay! Our friendship is more important than a toy aeroplane, ”Keegan replied with a smile.

When the day is dawning, the Center of Naxi Dongba Pictographs and Paintings of the old town Liliang welcomes his owner, He Runyuan, who is dressed in a traditional Naxi clothing. Every day, He explains Dongba culture to tourists and teaches them to write Dongba characters. “Dongba characters are not only the soul of Dongba culture, but also a treasure for the whole world,” said He. Enjoying a history of over 1, 000 years, Dongba characters are an ancient system of pictographic glyphs (象形字形). They are praised to be the “living fossil (活化石)” in writing.
As a member of the Naxi group, He first learned Dongba characters at the age of 13. He loved them immediately when he first looked at the symbols. “These characters have pictographic drawings that look like humans, animals, plants etc.” He said. “They are usually colorful and recognizable.”
Though the characters are interesting, learning them is never easy. Dongba culture is always mastered by Dongbas, the Naxi priests (祭司). Without Dongbas in his village, He has to travel far to the Old Town, where many Dongbas are gathered. “In most cases, I need to walk for more than one day to the destination. To get more learning time, I always set off very early when the city is still in darkness,” said He.
But the love for Dongba culture keeps him going. For the past 30 years, He has been studying these characters every day. In 2016, He set up the Center of Naxi Dongba Pictographs and Paintings Where He beautified fans, glasses and even T-shirts with Dongba characters, hoping to pass down Dongba culture and let more people know about it.
“Our life is limited, but so long as everyone makes an effort, the life of a culture can exist forever,” He said.

In 1986, when he was only a prince. King Charles told a television interviewer that it was important to talk to plants. He was widely laughed at. But his wisdom seems to have been ahead of its time, for there is now plenty of evidence that plants can detect (察觉) sound, react to it, and even perhaps produce it.
Scientists have been experimenting with playing sounds to plants since at least the 1960s, during which time they have been exposed to everything from Beethoven to Michael Jackson. Over the years, evidence that this sort of thing can have an effect has been growing. One paper, published in 2018, announced that an Asian plant grew much larger leaves when exposed to 56 days of Buddhist chants — but not if it was exposed to Western pop music, or silence. Another, published last year, found that plants exposed to the noise of traffic from a busy motorway suffered slow growth, and produced a range of stress compounds (成分).
Another research reports that certain frequencies (频率), played in some environments like greenhouses, can affect seed growth and even improve crop production. And plants can make noises, too. Earlier this year a group of researchers at Tel Aviv University published an article in Cell Press, reporting that several plants gave out different noises in response to different stresses — although not at the sorts of frequencies that humans can hear. Humans can only hear frequencies of up to 16 kilohertz. Scientists discovered sounds given out by plants were up to 250 kilohertz.
If all that sounds strange, perhaps it should not. After all, sound carries useful information.
From an evolutionary point of view, there is no reason to expect that information to be applied only by animals.
12. What was most people’s attitude to Charles’ opinion
A. Unclear. B. Positive. C. Cautious. D. Negative.
13. What can we learn from paragraph 2
A. Different sounds have different effects on plants.
B. Buddhist chants don’t make a difference to plants.
C. Western pop music does good to plants’ growth.
D. The noise of traffic produces stress compounds.
14. Why can’t humans hear sounds given out by plants
A. The sounds are strange. B. The plants grow in greenhouses.
C. The plants are under great stress. D. The sounds are at high frequencies.
15. What’s the main idea of the text
A. It’s the important to talk to plants.
B. Sounds make a difference to plants.
C. Plants can discover and even make sound.
D. Humans can’t hear sounds produced by plants.

On the first day of Grade 6, I sat in my quiet classroom and observed all the people I would eventually be friend. I looked around and noticed that most kids were dressed in their nicest clothes. My eyes stopped on a shy-looking girl in the back of the room. She wore an old yellow shirt with a pair of worn jeans. Her hair was unusually short and unwashed. I caught myself thinking, “That’s disgusting (令人反感的). Doesn’t she know what a bath is ” As I looked around, I found others were probably thinking the same.
The teacher began checking the attendance. “Terri Jackson ” the teacher asked. Silence. “Um, Terri Jackson ” Finally we heard a trembling answer from the back of the room. We all turned back to see what had happened. “Frightened Terri’s shirt has a crack!” one boy joked. “Eww, I bet it’s a hundred years old!” another girl said. One comment after another brought a roar of laughter. I was probably laughing the loudest. Certainly, it made her feel awkward. Terri was the joke of the whole sixth grade that year.
With my birthday coming closer, I began to invite my classmates. It struck me that I should also invite Terri to make us happier. So I came to Terri’s seat. “Hey Scary—I mean Terri—you want to come to my birthday party on Friday “A lot of girls were laughing beside us. I noticed Terri’s face buried in her hands. She was crying.
“What’s got you all upset All I did was invite you over, ”I whispered. She looked up and watched my eyes. “Really ” That was all she could say. Her seldom-heard voice amazed me. “I guess so. ”My voice sounded surprisingly sincere. I’d never seen her smile so brightly. I felt good the rest of the day. I was even looking forward to my birthday party.

Scientists have been experimenting with playing sounds to plants since at least the 1960s during which time they have been exposed to everything from Beethoven to Michael Jackson.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. D 15. C

【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“One paper, published in 2018, announced that an Asian plant grew much larger leaves when exposed to 56 days of Buddhist chants — but not if it was exposed to Western pop music, or silence. Another, published last year, found that plants exposed to the noise of traffic from a busy motorway suffered slow growth, and produced a range of stress compounds (成分). (2018年发表的一篇论文宣布,一种亚洲植物在暴露于56天的佛教颂歌中时,叶子会长得更大,但如果暴露于西方流行音乐或的寂静环境中,则不会。去年发表的另一项研究发现,暴露在繁忙高速公路交通噪音中的植物生长缓慢,并产生一系列应激化合物。)”可推知,不同的声音会对植物有不同的影响。故选A项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Earlier this year a group of researchers at Tel Aviv University published an article in Cell Press, reporting that several plants gave out different noises in response to different stresses — although not at the sorts of frequencies that humans can hear. Humans can only hear frequencies of up to 16 kilohertz. Scientists discovered sounds given out by plants were up to 250 kilohertz. (今年早些时候,特拉维夫大学的一组研究人员在《细胞出版社》上发表了一篇文章,报告说,几种植物对不同的压力会发出不同的声音——尽管不是人类能听到的那种频率。人类只能听到高达16千赫兹的频率。科学家们发现植物发出的声音高达250千赫兹。)”可知,人类听不到植物发出的声音是因为植物发出的声音的频率很高,超出了人类的听力范围。故选D项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中“But his wisdom seems to have been ahead of its time, for there is now plenty of evidence that plants can detect (察觉) sound, react to it, and even perhaps produce it. 【16题详解】
根据上文“But those little troubles, such as when we make a mistake, and when we judge ourselves as “stupid” or such like, can actually have quite an impact on our mental well-being.(但是那些小麻烦,比如当我们犯了错误,当我们认为自己“愚蠢”之类的,实际上会对我们的心理健康产生相当大的影响)”可知,当我们犯错时,我们会认为自己很愚蠢,这对心理会造成巨大的伤害;再结合小标题“Be kind to yourself(善待自己)”可知,此处应该与前文构成转折关系,即要善待自己,多想好的方面。所以E项Instead of being negative on yourself, try being positive.(不要对自己消极,试着积极一点)构成转折。故选E。

根据上文“We all need others(我们都需要别人)”可知,空格处应该对这一概念进行阐述。所以C项It’s hard to be an island, entire of itself.(很难成为一个孤立的岛屿)对上文进行进一步阐释,我们在别人的陪伴下,不会变得孤独。故选C。
【20题详解】
根据空格前一句“Eat the right foods and you’ll feel an obvious change in your attitude and mental well-being in a few weeks(吃正确的食物,你会在几周内感受到你的态度和心理健康的明显变化)”以及下文“Avoid lots of processed food(避免大量加工食品)”可知,空格处应该讲述如何进行恰当的饮食。所以G项Aim for a well-balanced diet and one that is as close to nature as possible(追求均衡的饮食,尽量接近自然)承上启下。故选G。

47. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】When Friday came finally, Terri and my classmates arrived on time. My time with Terri passed by in a flash, and I found myself actually enjoying her company. We chatted about her family and her battles with poverty. We discovered that we both played violin, and my favorite part of the afternoon occurred when she played the violin for me. I was amazed by how beautifully she played. A wave of happiness crept over our faces. It seemed as if the birthday had brought us into another beautiful world. Before we knew it, the last ray of sunshine shone on the roof. They waved goodbye to me.
From then on, Terri and I became best friends. We studied and played together, helping each other when facing difficulties. Happiness came back to Terri’s face. When Terri was laughed at by others, I always shouted, “Let her alone.” At that moment, tears of gratitude were welling up in her eyes. As time went on, we became closer. It struck me that if it hadn’t been for the birthday, I wouldn’t have found a true friend. I know that true confidence is not proven by destroying another’s self-esteem, but by having the strength to stand up for Terri Jackson’s world.
