In near-freezing winter temperatures and wearing nothing but white loincloths, throngs of men wrestle one another in a bid to a claim a talisman during Japan’s Somin-sai festival – more famously known as the “naked man festival.”
But the event, said to have run for over 1,000 years at the secluded Kokusekiji Temple, was held for the last time on Saturday, becoming the latest Japanese tradition to fall victim to the country’s aging population crisis.
The Somin-sai festival was one of three major “naked man” or Hadaka Matsuri festivals held in the country. It took place annually on the seventh day of the Lunar New Year at the Kokusekiji Temple in the northeastern prefecture of Iwate.
As popular among tourists wanting to catch a glimpse of the ritual as it was among locals wishing for a prosperous year ahead, it attracted an estimated 3,000 visitors, national broadcaster NHK reported.
Ritual details of each of the three major Hadaka Matsuri vary across the country, but they share similar spirits: it’s a celebration of a bountiful harvest, prosperity, good health and fertility.
The event became known as the naked festival because male participants only wear a Japanese loincloth called a “fundoshi” and a pair of white socks called “tabi.”
This year’s Somin-sai saw hundreds of participants carrying kakuto, square-shaped lanterns inscribed with blessings and chanting “Jasso joyasa!” (evil, go away), as they streamed into the cold waters of the Yamauchigawa river to cleanse their body for preparation.

Put away your spring florals and step into your Jimmy Choos because there’s a new Miranda Priestly in town.
The intrepid Vanessa Williams has been cast as Miranda Priestly in the upcoming “Devil Wears Prada” musical, according to a statement posted Monday on the stage play’s official website.
The slightly terrifying character, originated by Meryl Streep in the iconic 2006 film about a monstrously mean editor-in-chief of a fashion magazine, might tell you that “there’s no one who can do what I do.” But a teaser video showcasing Williams as Priestly that was posted to her Instagram page on Monday makes a solid case that she can certainly do it, too.

She also appeared in TV shows such as “Desperate Housewives” and “Ugly Betty” and has earned 11 Grammy nominations.
“The Devil Wears Prada” first premiered in theaters in 2006 and is based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel of the same name.
Starring Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci, the film follows recent journalism grad Andy Sachs (Hathaway), who scores a coveted position as the assistant to Streep’s Priestly, the fashion industry’s most powerful magazine editor.
Weisberger’s story is being adapted into a musical for the stage on London’s West End featuring an original score by rock legend Elton John.
The musical will open at the Dominion Theater in October.

70 coins removed from stomach of alligator at Nebraska zoo
An alligator at a zoo in Omaha, Nebraska, needed an emergency procedure late last week to remove dozens of coins from its stomach, zoo officials said.
A total of 70 metal coins were found inside Thibodaux, a 36-year-old alligator, according to the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium.
“A plastic pipe was placed to protect his mouth and safely pass the tools used to access the coins, such as a camera that helped us guide the retrieval of these objects,” veterinarian Christina Ploog said in a statement from the zoo.
The coins were found during a routine examination on the animal. All were successfully removed.
Ploog believes the coins were likely thrown into the animal’s habitat by visitors.
“Guests should not throw coins into any bodies of water at the Zoo,” the facility said in a statement.

US urged to stop harassing, interrogating Chinese students entering country
China's State Councilor and Minister of Public Security Wang Xiaohong and US Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas met in Vienna, Austria on Sunday local time, discussing bilateral cooperation in drug control and law enforcement.
