Like fine food, good writing is something we approach with pleasure and enjoy from the first taste to the last. And good writers, like good cooks, do not suddenly appear full-blown. Quite the opposite, just as the cook has to undergo a particular training, mastering the skills of his trade, the writer must sit at his desk and devote long hours to achieving a style in his writing, whatever its purpose is—schoolwork, matters of business, or purely social communication.
You may be sure that the more painstaking the effort, the more effective the writing, and the more rewarding.
There are still some faraway places in the world where you might find a public scribe to do your business or social writing for you, for money. There are a few managers who are lucky enough to have the service of that rare kind of secretary who can take care of all sorts of letter writing with no more than a quick note to work from. But for most of us, if there is any writing to be done, we have to do it ourselves.
We have to write school papers, business papers or home papers. We are constantly called on to put words to papers. It would be difficult to count the number of such words, messages, letters, and reports put into mails or delivered by hand, but the daily figures must be extremely large. What is more, everyone who writes expects, or at least hopes whatever he writes will be read, from first word to last, not just thrown into some “letters-to-be-read” files or into a wastepaper basket. This is the reason we bend our efforts toward learning and practicing the skills of interesting, effective writing.
46. In this passage, good writing is compared to fine food because _______.
A. both are enjoyable B. both are hard to learn
C. both are necessary to life D. both take a long time to prepare
47. according to the passage, which of the following statements is true?
A. Writing skills are less important than experience.
B. A good writer should have his own way of writing.
C. A good writer should learn to write all kinds of articles.
D. The more efforts one makes, the more money one can earn.
48. The author thinks that the most important reason for us to practice writing skills is _______.
A. to earn our living B. to attract others to read
C. to do daily reports easily D. to become good secretaries
49. The purpose of the author in writing this passage is to _______.
A. comment and blame B. introduce and describe
C. explain and persuade D. interest and inform

Not everyone who enjoys sports events likes to take part in them. Many people prefer to be onlookers, either watching them on television, or listening to them on the radio. When there is an important baseball game or boxing match it is almost impossible to get tickets; everyone wants to attend.
Chess, card-playing, and dancing are forms of indoor recreation enjoyed by many people. ??? Have you ever sat on a camel? Well, if you have, then you know how scary it is when the camel rises on its long wobbly(摆动的) legs. The rocking motion of a camel is a bit like a ship being tossed around in seas. It is no wonder that the camel is often called the ship of the desert. Actually, the name owes its origins to the fact that camels were brought from the desert, to serve as beasts of burden(役畜) in other countries.
???? We in India are only familiar with one species of camel, known as the Dromedary camel. This animal is single-humped(单驼峰), has long legs and is found in the deserts of Asia and Africa. Another species (the two-humped shorter-legged Bactrian camel) is found in parts of China and Central Asia.
???? Recently, scientists discovered what they think is a new species of wild camel that lives in a remote part of China. These mammals look very similar to the Bactrian camel but they have a unique feature —they survive by drinking salty water.
???? Strangely enough, scientists knew about the existence of the animal, but had no idea about their unique ability. As a result, researchers now admit that these animals are not Bactrian camels as they thought at first, but a new species. The only obvious physical difference is that the saltwater- drinking species has its humps further apart than the Bactrian camel.
???? Camels are most common in the African and Asian deserts, but fossil (化石) evidence shows that camels originated in North America about 45 million years ago. So how did they manage to come into Africa? Well, millions of years ago, North America and Asia were connected by a land mass —the present-day Bering Strait.
???? Scientists think that the camels migrated(迁徙) into South America and came to Asia, disappearing almost entirely from the land of its origin. However, many researchers say that the South American llama(无峰驼) is a direct descendant(后代) of the camels.

One possible version: Day Western holidays such as Christmas, Valentine's Day. are getting more and more popular in China. Some Chinese people even get crazy on them. But at the same time, people seem to have less enthusiasm for our traditional festivals such as the Spring Festival and the Mooncake Festival. However, most people celebrate western holidays without knowing the meaning behind them. They just go shopping, hold parties and have fun. In my opinion, the celebration of western holiday is a good way of learning the western cultures, which helps to promote understanding and communication between Chinese cultures and other cultures. Besides, the celebration can also make our life more interesting. However, we should make great efforts to preserve and enrich our own traditional culture.

Millions of people pass through the gates of Disney's entertainment parks in California, Florida and Japan each year. What makes these place an almost universal attraction? What makes foreign kings and queens and other important people want to visit these Disney parks? Well, one reason is the way they're treated once they get there. The people at Disney go out of their way to serve their “guests”, as they prefer to call them, and to see that they enjoy themselves.
All new employees, from vice presidents to part-time workers, begin their employment by attending Disney University and taking “Traditions(传统)I”. Here, they learn about the company's history, how it is managed, and why it is successful. They are shown how each department relates to the whole. All employees are shown how their part is important in making the park a success.
After passing “Traditions I”, the employees go on to do more specialized training for their specific(具体的)jobs. No detail(细节)is missed. A simple job like taking tickets requires four eight-hour days of training. When one ticket taker was asked why it took so much training for such a simple, ordinary job, he replied, “What happens if someone wants to know where the restrooms are, when the parade starts or what bus to take back to the campgrounds?…We need to know the answers or where to get them quickly. Our constant aim is to help our guests enjoy the party.”
Even Disney's managers get involved in the daily management of the park. Every year, the mangers leave their desks and business suits and put on special service clothes. For a full week, the bosses sell hot dogs or ice cream, take tickets or drive the monorail(单轨车), and take up any of the 100 jobs that make the entertainment park come alive. The managers agree that this week help them to see the company's goals more clearly.
All these efforts to serve the public well have made Walt Disney Productions famous. Disney is considered by many as the best mass service provider in America or the world. As one longtime business observer once said, “How Disney treats people, communicates with them, rewards them , is in my view the very reason for his fifty years of success… I have watched, very carefully and with great respect and admiration, the theory and practice of selling satisfaction and serving millions of people on a daily basis, successfully. It is what Disney does best.”

Habits, whether good or bad, are gradually formed. When a person does a certain thing again, he is driven by some unseen force to do the same thing repeatedly, then a habit is formed. Once a habit is formed, it is difficult, and sometimes impossible, to get rid of. It is therefore very important that we should pay great attention to the formation of habits. Children often form bad habits, some of which remain with them as long as they live. Older persons also form bad habits lasting as long as they live, and sometimes become ruined by them.
There are other habits which, when formed in early life, are of great help. Many successful men say that much of their success has something to do with certain habits in early life, such as early rising, honesty and so on.
Among the habits which children should not form are laziness, lying, stealing and so on. These are all easily formed habits. Unfortunately older persons often form habits which could have been avoided(避免).
We should keep away from(远离) all these bad habits, and try to form such habits as will be good for ourselves and others.
45. ________ are formed little by little.
A. Good habits
B. Bad habits
C. Both good habits and bad habits
D. Either good habits or bad habits

A. Because habits are of great help to every one of us.
B. Because a man can never get rid of a habit.
C. Because it's hard and sometimes even impossible to throw away bad habits.
D. Because we are forced to do them again and again.
49. According to the passage, early rising ________.
A. has something to do with success
B. is an easily formed habit
C. is such a habit as should have been avoided
D. is such a habit as will be kept

The child of today owes much of its pleasant school life to the work of Maria Montessori and others who felt as she did.
Maria Montessori was born in 1870 in northern Italy. Both her parents were well educated.

A German taxi-driver, Franz Bussman, recently found his brother who was thought to have been killed twenty years before.
While on a walking tour with his wife, he stopped to talk to a workman. Dear classmates,
I think it is very necessary for us to talk about friendship at the meeting today.
As a member of society, we need friends and friendship. Healthy friendship may help people get on well and benefit one another. On the contrary, unhealthy friendship may bring about bad things. For example, some so-called friends bully others in the school; they often smoke or drink together; they never point out each other' s mistakes. Such deeds are against school rules. In fact, they are doing harm to their friends.
In my opinion, friendship should be based on the love of our class. Friends should help each other with study or in making progress. What's more, we should encourage each other, never cover up each other's mistakes, so that we may learn well and achieve great success.
