Nine years ago around Christmas, I was on a Captiva Island beach at sunrise. I crouched (蹲) low there and immersed (沉浸于) myself in the false hope of finding a treasure (宝物) larger than the small 16 on the shore.
A man jogged along the waves 17 my direction. When he came near me, he slowed to a walk. I didn't 18 him until he was almost standing over me. Too young to be 19 of strangers, I got on my feet and looked at him. It was then that I saw what was in his 20 , a beautiful bright cream-colored shell, the kind of thing that I was looking for. He smiled as I stared in 21 , and then, to my shock, he handed it to me. I held it 22 before me like a diamond, not 23 my eyes.
“I think you will like it,” he said, and then continued his 24 down the beach.
I do not 25 his voice, his clothes or even his face, 26 I do still have the shell, and the greatest lesson I've ever 27 . Now the shell sits on my bedside table, not as 28 and big as it was, but it is still there, a 29 reminder that there is 30 in the world.

The shell is 33 to me, as important as another man who returned to the plane to 34 me my lost jacket.
I know that 35 a difference in someone's life, no matter how big or small, is what truly matters, and that it is worth all the treasure in the world.

Every night Johnny entered “Thought for the Day” in the computer and then printed fifty pages. Johnny cut out each quote and signed his name on every one of them. Then he put them in a paper bag he kept beside him at work. When he finished bagging someone's food, he put his “Thought for the Day” in the customer's bag.
It touched me to think that this young man had made his job important by making good memories for all his customers.
A month later the store manager called me. He said, “Barbara, you won't believe what happened today. When I was making my rounds, I found Johnny's line was three times longer than anyone else's! So I got more cashiers (收银员) out here and got more lanes (通道) open, trying to get people to change lanes. But no one would move. They want Johnny's ‘Thought for the Day'.”
He continued, “I got a lump in the throat when one woman came up to me and said, ‘I used to shop at your store only once a week, but now I come in every time I go by for Johnny's ‘Thought for the Day'.”
A few months later, the store manager called me again. “Barbara,” he said, “Johnny has changed our store. Now when there's a broken flower, there'll be an elderly woman or a little girl to repair it. It was in 1865 that two Frenchmen were looking into the future. Edouard de Laboulaye, who studied history, admired the United States greatly. Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was a famous artist. De Laboulaye was thinking about 1876, when the country he respected so much would celebrate its 100th birthday. What gift would be good enough for the people of France to give? Right away, Bartholdi thought of a giant statue.
Bartholdi kept thinking about a statue for several years. Then, in 1871, he visited the United States and saw the perfect place for a huge statue. It was Bedloe's Island in New York.
The project — the Statue of Liberty — got started almost immediately, and Bartholdi went home to France to begin work. However, the statue was not finished in time for the 100th birthday. The United States Congress approved (批准) the use of Bedloe's Island on February 22, 1877. During the 100th celebration in 1876, the arm of the statue that would hold the torch was shown in Philadelphia. In 1879 the huge head was put on display in France. For the face of the statue, Bartholdi used his mother as a model.
The statue was finally completed in 1884. The work had been difficult enough, but then some really hard work began. The statue had to be taken apart and packed into boxes. It was not until May 1885 that the statue — in pieces — left France for its new home.
The statue arrived in June. However, the Americans fell behind on their part of the project. They hadn't raised enough money for building the base of the statue. People wondered if the country really needed or wanted such a gift. Finally, though, the money was raised and the base was completed. The last piece of the statue was put in place on October 28, 1886.

Last July, we asked what you dream of doing as an adult. Thanks for your great responses! We wish we had room to print them all. Here are just a few.
Work and Play
My dream job is being a construction worker, but only on an amusement park.
James Martian, Age 9
Alaska
Royal Fashion Designer
My dream job is to sew dresses for a queen. I could make whatever design I wanted. Her breakfast dress would be blue and long. Her lunch dress is purple and medium. Her dinner dress is red and short. They would all have sparkles (闪烁的光). I think they would be pretty. I like my dream job.
Jenna Suchyta, Age 6

A “PoliceLawFireman”
When I grow up, I want to be a policeman or a fireman or a lawyer because they help people. Maybe I will combine all three and become a “PoliceLawFireman”. I can work as a policeman in the morning. I can do law things in the afternoon. I can do fireman things in the evening. But for now, I want to be a boxer to build up my muscles. I will need my strength!
Avi Samuels, Age 7
Illinois
Playing in the Band
My dream job is to become a professional guitarist and vocalist (歌手) for my future five-member rock band. I practice the acoustic (原声的) guitar, and I have written hundreds of songs! In the far, far future, bicycles and perhaps skates may be run by jet power, and a new thing to ride may be a small flying saucer (飞碟). Imagine a race between them!
There may be telepathy helmets (心灵感应帽) that send thought waves from your brain to that of your friend miles away. You just think a thought and your friend knows it! You can have secrets with each other that nobody else can turn in on!
What about the food of the future? Scientists think that much of it will be artificial — made in factories from such surprising things as coal, limestone, air, and water. The artificial food will be healthful because all the things that you need to live a long and healthy life will be put into it.
The future hospitals will probably have “body banks” that can give you almost any new part you need to keep on living. People of the future may live to be a lot older than 100 years.
What about highways of the future? Well, a very small child probably will be able to drive a car. Nobody will need to steer (驾驶). Electric signals will hold each car on the right road to get wherever the “driver” wants to go. And it probably will be impossible for cars to smash together. Controls that won't even have to be touched will make all speeding cars miss each other or will put on the brakes. Driving cars will be as safe as being at home.
But maybe the most wonderful surprise in the future will be weather control. Cities may have giant plastic domes (圆顶罩) over them to keep out snow, rain, or storms. When you plan a picnic in a park, you won't have to worry about rain. It will rain only when the “weatherman” thinks it is necessary to fresh the air inside the city. All other days will be fair and warm.
The future should be a wonderful time in which to live and the time we are living in now is also a wonderful future to the people who lived 100 years ago.
47. The underlined word “that” (in Paragraph 2) refers to ______.
A. telepathy helmet B. the brain
C. thought wave D. the secret
48. What can we learn from the passage?
A. With telepathy helmets, we can share our thoughts without any word.
B. The artificial food made from coal and limestone tastes the most delicious in the future.
C. There will be “body banks” instead of hospitals in the future.
D. Plastic domes themselves can automatically control the weather.
49. With the future highways, ______.
A. small children have to learn to drive
B. car accidents still couldn't be avoided
C. we can be taken to the destination without steering
D. cars will be no longer equipped with brakes
50. The author's attitude towards the future life is ______.
A. optimistic B. pessimistic
C. satisfied D. doubtful

Like cats, geckos (壁虎) always land on their feet. If they happen to fall from a wall or leaf they've been climbing, a quick move of the tail makes sure that they land feet first.
Geckos are truly built for climbing: their special feet have hairy toes fixed to a wall or other vertical (垂直的) surface in just a few thousandths of a second. This lets geckos run 15 body lengths up a vertical surface in just one second.
Researchers had thought this was all the equipment geckos needed to keep their feet firmly on the wall. But it turns out that's not the case. A gecko's long tail becomes necessary to stay wall-bound when its feet move on a slippery surface, and also if its feet can't keep hold.
The researchers noticed that when geckos fell or jumped off a wall, they always landed stomach-side down regardless of whether they began falling upside-down (颠倒地).
To find out how they righted themselves during their falling, the researchers conducted an experiment by placing the geckos upside-down on what looks like the underside of a leaf. When they lost their foothold and fell, the geckos moved their tails so that they were at a right angle with their bodies. They then rotated (使旋转) their tails to make their bodies rotate. As soon as they were right-side up, they stopped rotating. On average, it only took the geckos about 100 milliseconds to right themselves so that they would land on their feet.
Cats use a different way to land on their feet after a fall. Because their tails don't have the force as a gecko does, cats can't use them to right themselves. Instead they twist (扭曲) their bodies in mid-air.
Some engineers are trying to build a robot that copies the geckos' climbing and have a tail fixed on the robot for balance.
51. The underlined word “this” (in Paragraph 3) refers to “______”.
A. gecko's hair B. gecko's tail C. gecko's body D. gecko's toe
52. According to the experiment conducted by the researchers, what's the real use of the geckos' tails during their falling?
A. Making the geckos rotating.
B. Stopping the geckos falling.
C. Stopping their falling upside-down.
D. Keeping them falling slowly.
53. How do cats avoid their injury during a fall?
A. By keeping their balance.
B. By landing their bodies upside-down.
C. By using tails to right themselves. D. By twisting their bodies.
54. Geckos' special skill gives engineers some new idea to ______.
A. produce more robots
B. invent robots twisted on the ground
C. invent robots that can keep balance with a tail

Future pens
Future pens will be highly intelligent with a microcomputer in the penholder, on which stands a small screen.
When you come across an unfamiliar word, just read the word to the screen instead of referring to a dictionary, and the word will appear on the screen. On the other hand, they will sound the alarm when you make a spelling mistake, and correct the mistake by spelling the right word on the screen automatically.
Surprisingly, they are also your supervisors. When your sitting position is not correct, their red lights will be on. What's more, they can repair themselves and they are durable, which is quite environmentally friendly.

III 阅读理解
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
The year is 2094. It has been announced that a comet (彗星) is heading towards the Earth. Most of it will miss our planet, but two pieces will probably hit the southern half of the Earth.
On 17 July , a piece four kilometers wide enters the Earth's atmosphere with a massive explosion. About half of the piece is destroyed, but the remaining part hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and a huge hole is made in the sea bed. Huge waves are created and spread outwards from the hole. The wall of water, a kilometer high, rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometers an hour. Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned.
Before the waves reach South America, the second piece of the comet lands in Argentina. Earthquakes and volcanoes are set off in the Andes Mountains. The shock waves move north into California and all around the Pacific Ocean. The cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Tokyo are completely destroyed by earthquakes. Millions of people in the southern half of the earth are already dead, but the north won't escape for long. Because of the explosions, the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, temperatures around the world fall to almost zero . Crops are ruined. The sun won't
be seen again for many years. Wars break out as countries fight for food. A year later, no more than 10 million people remain alive.
Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the Earth. The dinosaurs were on the Earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the Earth was hit by a piece of object in space. The dinosaurs couldn't live through the cold climate that followed and they died out. Will we meet the same end?
56.What is mainly described in the passage?
A.A historic discovery. B.An event of imagination.
C.A research on space. D.A scientific adventure.
57.When the first piece hits the South Atlantic, it causes .
A.an earthquake B.damages to cities
C.an Earth explosion D.huge waves
58.Why can't the northern half of the earth escape for long?
A.Because the land is covered with water
B.Because the light and heat from the sun can not reach the earth.
C.Because people there can not live at the temperature of zero.
D.Because wars break out among countries .
59.By giving the example of dinosaurs, the author tries to prove .
A.animals could not live in the cold climate
B.what happened 65 million years ago was an invented story
C.the human beings will die out in 2094
D.the Earth could be hit by other objects in space
B
We often think of future. We often wonder what the world would be like in a hundred years' time.
Think of space, perhaps a permanent(永久的) station on the moon will have been set up. Perhaps people will be able to visit the moon as tourists. Cheap rockets for space travel will have been developed, permitting long journeys throughout the solar system(太阳系). When that time comes, people will be taking holidays in space and visiting other planets. Great progress will have been made in medicine, too. Perhaps a cure will have been discovered for the most terrible
of all diseases—cancer. Pollution is a problem we must solve. In hundred's years' time it will have been controlled.
All the world will have been developed — even Antarctica. There will be large cities in Antarctica. We already have supersonic(超音速的) flight, but in a hundred years' time we will have supersonic land travel as well.
We will have used up most of earth's land to build our cities, so floating cities will have been built. The Japanese already have plans for cities of this kind. And there will be cities under the sea. The first of these will have been completed.
60. We will have developed ______ in a hundred years' time, permitting long journeys all over the solar system.
A. cheap rockets for space travel B. a plane
C. a spaceship D. a satellite
61. Man will also have supersonic land travel ______ .
A. in a year B. about half a century later
C. in the year 2050 D. about a century later
62. The last paragraph mainly talks about ______ .

B. cities under the sea
C. Japan will first build floating cities
D. earth's land is in danger
63. The best title for the passage is ______ .

C
Some people are pessimistic(悲观的) when they think about the future. They say that,a hundred years from now, we will have used most of the earth's resources. We will have polluted our seas badly, and be unable to eat fish from them. We will have made the air so dirty that we will need to wear masks. The world's population will have doubled, and we will have used all the countryside for housing; there will be no farmland left.
Other people believe that Man adapts very easily. They have a different idea of the future. How, in their views, will people be living in a hundred years' time?
One architect believes that Man will move off the land. He suggests that the city of the future will be a huge, pyramid-shaped building, which will be floating on the surface of the sea. About 5,000 families will be living there, and the building will contain shops and schools as well as homes. By living on the sea,we will give the farmers more land to grow crops.
As for oil, people will no longer need it: we will be heating our homes with power from the sun. And we will not be short of minerals, because there are plenty under our oceans. At the moment, we do not have the technology to get them out. But, in a hundred years' time, the optimists say, the new sea cities will be using these resources.
What will be in the shops in the year 3000? What will people be wearing? How will people be traveling?
Scientists who make predictions about the future suggest that, by the year 3000, shops will no longer exist. Computers will have replaced them; and people will order goods from home.
People will be wearing very light, thin clothes. By this time, scientists will have invented a fabric that keeps us cool in hot weather and warm in cold weather.
As for travel, the experts say that most people will be using public transport. Electric cars will be traveling through the streets day and night. Anybody will be able to stop one and use it.
An interesting picture. Unfortunately, we will not be there to see if these predictions come true.
64. Pessimists believe that in the future ______ .
A. the seas and oceans will be full of houses
B. we'll have used up all the resources
C. we will not have enough fish to eat from the seas
D. we will have polluted the air so badly that it will be impossible for us to breath
65. Optimists suggest that ______ .
A. all the land will be too polluted to be cropped on
B. pyramids will be the most commonly-used houses
C. people will be using the power from the sun instead of oil
D. we will be short of materials even though we get them from under the oceans
66. Scientists have made the predictions EXCEPT ______ .
A. electric cars will be going along the streets continuously
B. the resources under the oceans will never be used up
C. people will order from home
D. people won't suffer from cold any longer
D
The new model is the highly interactive(互动的)learning model. We could also call it the conversational model, or the tutorial model. It is computer based, with the interaction between the student, or a small group of students, and learning programs are like the conversation between a student and a skilled tutor. Distance learning will be the main delivery method.
Student interaction with the learning material on the computer will use the student's natural language; it will seem like a conversation between a student and a human tutor. This is the key point of highly interactive, or conversational, learning units. Programs will ask questions in the student's native language, and respond reasonably to free-form student input. Multiple choice and pointing will seldom be used; they often do not allow individualization (个体化) of education.
An important aspect of this model is that the computer will frequently store information about the student, about problems and about how far individual students have progressed. These records will be used often within the programs. Thus when a student returns to the learning activity, the computer knows about that student and knows where to begin the new part.
Global education is critical for the future, to get rid of poverty, corruption (腐败), violence and war, to solve major problems such as the lack of drinkable water, and to insure a happy life for all. Education should no longer be limited to the wealthy of the world, but should be available to everyone.
In the new distance learning environment learning can take place in markets, libraries, public buildings, learning centers, and the home. Gradually schools and universities will play a smaller role in learning, both because better learning can be delivered through such highly interactive material, and because such learning will be less costly for the individual student. Motivation (动机)is particularly important in a mastery-based distance learning, as the usual threats of traditional classrooms such as that of low grades are no longer possible,
Voice input will probably be the mode for this interaction. The new voice input systems from several companies are useful, cheap, and speaker independent in highly interactive learning. Keyboards may not be needed. Speech is a natural way for humans to communicate.
Students will work in small peer groups, about four. Other contacts with people, learning circles, will be possible, directly or electronically.
67. What is not the new model also called?
A. interactive model B. conversational model
C. tutorial model D. linguistic model
68. What does the model often use?
A. individualization of education
B. multiple choice and pointing
C. questions in students' native language
D. fixed-form student input
69. What do computers detect students about?
A. Their future achievements B. Their intelligences
C. Their problems D. Their families
70. According to the passage, distance learning is ______ .
A. still expensive for ordinary students
B. will take place mainly in classrooms.
C. will play more role in students' learning.
D. will still affect badly on the low-graded students
71. What is the Chinese for the underlined word “tutorial” in the firsr paragraph?
A. 辅导 B. 教具 C. 学费 D. 奖学金

Olaf Stapledon wrote a book called First and Last Men, in which he looked millions of years ahead. He told of different men and of strange civilizations, broken up by long 'dark ages' in between. In his view, what is called the present time is no more than a moment in human history and we are just the First Men . In 2, 000 million years from now there will be the Eighteenth or Last Men.
However, most of our ideas about the future are really very short-sighted. Perhaps we can see some possibilities for the next fifty years. But the next hundred? The next thousand? The next million? That's much more difficult.
When men and women lived by hunting 50, 000 years ago, how could they even begin to picture modern life? Yet to men of 50, 000 years from now, we may seem as primitive in our ideas as the Stone-Age hunters do to us. Perhaps through the spundels and ballalators, these words, which I have just made up, have to stand for things and ideas that we simply can't think of.
So why bother even to try imagining life far in the future? Here are two reasons. First unless we remember how short our own lives are compared with the whole human history, we are likely to think our own interests are much more important than they really are. If we make the earth a poor place to live, because we are careless or greedy or quarrelsome, our grand-children will not bother to think of excuses for us. Second, by trying to escape from present interests and imagine life far in the future, we may arrive at quite fresh ideas that we can use ourselves. For example, if we imagine that in the future men may give up farming, we can think of trying it now. So set you imagination free when you think about the future.
72. A particular mention made of Stapledon's book in the opening paragraph ______ ______
A. serves as a description of human history
B. serves an introduction to the discussion
C. shows a disagreement of views
D. Shows the popularity of the book
73. The text discusses men and women 50, 000 years ago and 50, 000 years from now in
order to show that ______ ___.
A. human history is extremely long
B. life has changed a great deal
C. it is useless to plan for the next 50 years
D. it is difficult to tell what will happen in the future
74. Spundels and ballalators are used in the text to refer to ______ ___.
A. tools used in farming
B. ideas about modern life
C. unknown things in the future
D. hunting skills in the Stone Age
75. According to the writer of the text , imagining the future will ______ ___.
A. serve the interests of the present and future generations
B. enable us to better understand human history
C. help us to improve farming
D. make life worth living

I'm a middle school student. I hear that a power station will be built near Mt. Yunxia, a place of interest. We know the power station will provide us with plenty of power and as a result, the local economy will develop rapidly, but many citizens and I are against the plan. To build the power station, many people will have to move away and a great number of trees will have to be cut
down. What's worse, once the scenery of Mt. Yunxia is destroyed, it can never be restored. Therefore, this plan is not good for protecting the environment. We suggest the city government should think over this plan.
Yours faithfully,
Li Ping
