New technology marrying the Internet with mobile phones will be the next big wave in telecommunications and will have a great effect on the way of life-industry, experts in Singapore for an international conference side last week.
Consumers(消费者) will soon be showing of tiny “communication devices” that join mobile telephone ,Internet terminals(终端机) ,music systems, cameras and other uses, Nokia executive(总裁) Bo Lisoe said.
The devices will become smaller, and as common as watches ,Lisoe believed.“We have to liberate the internet from the desktop and we have to rethink what a mobile phone is , because it's no longer a mobile phone ,”said Lisoe, a marketing director for Nokia.
Tiny, wireless computers using satellites and video-on-demand services will soon have people “switching(转换) between your stock (股票)prices and television programs ”wherever they go ,said Sugra Venkat, a communications director at Oracle Corporation .Bothe executives were in Singapore for Communic Asia' 99,Asia's largest telecommunications conference. More than 27,000 industry insiders and 900 companies were connected with the Jane 22-25event, organizers said.
Though small ,portable (手提的) Internet computers with built-in mobile phones are already on the market ,they have had limited success. Internet-telephone technology(IT) must be made easier to use ,and must be used no matter what kind of phone one has ,Lisoe said .This will be aided largely by a planned mobile phone operating system called Symbian ,he added.

Every pet owner loves his pet .There is no argument here.
But when we asked our readers whether they would clone their beloved animals , the responses were split almost down the middle . Of the 228 readers who answered it ,108 would clone, 111 would not and nine weighed each side without offering an opinion .
Clearly, from readers' response, this is an issue that reaches deeply into both the joy and eventual (最终的)sadness of owning a pet. It speaks, as well, to people's widely differing expectations over the developing scientific procedure (步骤)ycy
Most of the readers who favored the idea strongly believed it would produce at least a close copy of the original; many felt the process would actually return an exact copy. Those on the other side, however, held little hope that clone could truly recreate a pet; many simply did not wish to go against the natural law of life and death.
Both sides expressed equal love for their animals. More of them owned “the best dog/cat in the world”. They thought of their pets as their “best friend” or “a member of the family”. They told moving stories of pets' heroism, intelligence and selfless devotion.
Little wonders the loss is so disturbing---and the cloning so attractive. “People become very close to their animals, and the loss can be just as hard to bear as when a friend or family member dies,” says Gary Kowalski, author of goodbye, Friend: Healing Wisdom for Anyone Who Has Ever Lost a Pet. “For me, cloning feels like an attempt to turn death away…It's understandable. Death is always painful. It's difficult to deal with. It's hard to accept.”
But would cloning reduce the blow? This question seems to be at the heart of this problem.
60.So far as the cloning of pets is concerned, a recent survey shows that, of all pet owners, .
A.a lot more of them are for it
B.a lot more of them are against it
C.very few of them are willing to tell their opinions

61.The expression “eventual sadness of owning a pet.” (in paragraph 3) refers to .
A.the death of one's pet ycy
B.the final ownership of a pet
C.the troubles one has to deal with in keeping a pet
D.the dangers involved in the cloning of a pet
62.In spite of their differences on the problem of cloning, it seems that .
A.all pet owners love their pets very much
B.all pet owners try to go against the natural law of life and death
C.people who support cloning love their pets more
D.people who dislike cloning love their pets more
63.From what Gary Kowalski says, we can know that he .
A.has never thought about the problem of cloning
B.thinks it hard to accept the idea of cloning pets
C.is in favor of the idea of cloning pets
D.is all against the cloning of pets

Winter's short days are more than cold. For many people, winter depression, the most common type of Seasonal Affective Disorder(SAD), is as much a part of the reason as hats and scarves(围巾).
Winter serious SAD sufferers may need medical treatment. Those feeling a little blue can help themselves by sticking to a healthy lifestyle. Here are some tips:
Pace yourself. Don't expect to do everything you normally can. Set a realistic schedule. Don't listen to negative thinking, like blaming yourself or expecting to fail.
Get involved in activities that make you feel good or feel like you've achieved something. For example, play table tennis or badminton.
If you are feeling depressed, you may feel like staying away from friends. Yet this is a time when friends support can be helpful. Call them regularly. Remember, the more we put off calling or visiting a friend, the harder it is to rebuild a friendship.
Think clearly about what's wrong or right. Instead of giving in to vague feelings of sadness, look at your problems objectively. Break down problems into specific issues that you can work on.
Regular exercise helps to prevent and ease depression.
Eat well. Studies show that a healthy diet can help to maintain(keep) a healthy body and mind. The vitamins, minerals and micro-nutrients found in a balanced diet may help our bodies to produce feel-good hormones(荷尔蒙). Foods containing chemicals to help produce feel-good hormones include bananas, turkey, nuts and seeds. Eat at least five pieces of fruit and vegetables every day.

Deep into the night, the bus pulled in to a Howard Johnson's restaurant and everybody got off the bus except Vingo. The young people began to wonder about him , trying to imagine his life. One of the girls sat beside him and introduced herself. After a long time, slowly and painfully, he began to tell his story. He had been in prison in New York for the last four years, and now he was going home.
“Well, when I was in prison I wrote to my wife. I said, ‘Martha, I understand if you can not stay married to me'. I said I was going to be away a long time, and that if she couldn't stand it , if the kids kept asking questions, if it hurt her too much, well, she could just forget me . Get a new young man—she's wonderful woman—and forget all about me. I told her she didn't have to write to me, and she didn't. Not for the three and a half years.”
“Last week, when I was sure freedom was coming through, I wrote to her. I told her that if she had a new young man, I would understand. But if she didn't, if she would take me back, she should let me know. We used to live in the town, Brunswick, and there's a great big oak tree just as you come into the town. I told her if she would take me back, she should put a yellow handkerchief on the tree, and if she didn't want me, forgot me, no handkerchief and I'd keep going on through.”
Soon all the others were in it. When they were 20 miles from Brunswick, the young man took over window seats on the right side, waiting for the approach of the great oak tree. Vingo stopped looking, tightening his face into the ex-con's mask. Then it was 10 miles, and then 5, and the bus became very quiet.
Then suddenly all of the young people were up out of their seats, screaming and shouting and crying, doing small dances. All except Vingo.

It's important that we should take care of our eyes , otherwise we may get short-sighted. Now take Xiao Ming for example .Xiao Ming is a top student in our class. He likes reading very much. But he has a bad habit of Reading. The way he reads is wrong. He pays no attention to the care of his eyes. For example ,he reads in sunshine or moonlight :he often reads as he is walking or on a bus. Sometimes he reads as he is having a meal . Sometimes he even reads in bed . Day by day ,he has got something wrong with his eyes. He has become short-sighted . What an unlucky boy he is !
So I suggest that we should have the right way to read books to keep our good eyesight.

LONDON (Reuters Life!) ---- Forget about talking your children into considering life as a doctor or a teacher and start training them for the talent show.
A survey of British parents showed the aspirations (志向) of their children are greatly different from what they dreamed about when considering who they wanted to be when they grew up.
Although astronaut (宇航员) still remains fairly high on the list of careers (事业) kids dream about these days, others like doctor and teacher have been taken the place of by the desire (欲望) to win good name and money as a sporting hero, pop star or actor.
?The parents of children aged 5 to 11 said the choice of lawyer had dropped by only one place on a top 10 list to sixth, while teacher had dropped to ninth from top in the last 25 or more years.
?The survey for British TV channel “Watch” found a great difference between the genders (性别) of today's young people when compared with their parents' dreams 25 years or more ago.
?Playing professional football, being an astronaut and joining the firefighting service topped the boys' choices, while girls are more likely to be dreaming of taking to the stage as a pop star or actress or joining the medical profession.
When asked what they would like their children to do for a living, today's parents still like the academic (学术的) professions (职业), with law and medicine scoring highly, while being a boss came third.
Parents also praised job happiness above wealth (财富) when it comes to their hopes for their children.
Nearly 70 percent of the parents surveyed thought that they failed to follow their dreams when it came to their career, with 37 percent thinking it was caused by a lack of aspiration and not having the necessary conditions.
46.????? From the passage we know that most parents still hope that in the future their children can take up ______.

About twenty years ago I had the pleasure of teaching a disabled young woman. Not only was she good at math and science, but she was also extremely talented in art. She could draw and paint beautifully. When Audrey graduated from university she got two degrees, one in fine arts and one in chemistry. Not too many people do well in two such different areas of study.
??? Just before her high school graduation, Audrey gave me a wonderful gift. It was a watercolor painting of a mother and her baby. A tear fell from the mother's eye as she looked lovingly at her child. Beneath the painting Audrey had written these words: “The deep love from Mother, through me, touches another.” What a beautiful gift! I had the piece of art framed(给…做框) and hung in my office.
Years passed with many moves from one office to another and I lost the painting. Last year, after about eight years of not knowing where it was, I received a phone from a former colleague who said she had something of mine. It was the picture Audrey had painted for me 18 years ealier. When cleaning out a storage room she had discovered my gift.
I was struck that the precious gift came back. I knew Audrey very well. When she was four years old Audrey had a serious disease. What's worse, her father left the house. It was her mother who brought her up with much trouble. She survived the disease but was disabled.
To any other it is just a painting, but to me it shows how a mother's love has helped develop a talent and how its power pushes me ahead.
51. What made Audrey different from others was that she_______.
?? A. could draw and paint beautifullly
?? B. was good at math and chemistry
?? C. got two degrees in two different fields

?? B. One of her former colleagues found it.

?? D. Audrey found it for her.

?? A.The author's feeling.
?? B. Audrey's family.
?? C. Audrey's experience.
?? D. The author's experience.
54. Why does the author value the painting so much?
?? A. It was painted by her most talented student.??
B. The painting can be worth a lot of money.
?? C. The art value of the painting is immeasurable(无法估计的).
?? D. The painting encourages her to advance(前进).?

We are all called upon to make a speech at some point in life, but most of us don't do a very good job. This article gives some suggestions on how to give an effective speech.
So, you have to give a speech-- and you're terrified. You get nervous, you forget what you want to say, you stumble over words, you talk too long, and you bore your audience. Later you think, “Thank goodness, it's over. I'm just no good at public speaking. I hope I never have to do that again. ”
Cheer up! It doesn't have to be that bad. Here are some simple steps to take the pain out of speech making. Ask yourself the purpose of your speech. What is the occasion? Why are you speaking? Then, gather as many facts as you can on your subject. Spend plenty of time doing your research. Then spend plenty of time organizing your material so that your speech is clear and easy to follow. Use as many examples as possible, and use pictures, charts, and graphs if they will help you make your points more clearly. Never forget your audience. Don't talk over their heads, and don't talk down to them. Treat your audience with respect. They will appreciate your thoughtfulness.
Just remember: be prepared. Know your subject, your audience, and the occasion. Be brief. Say what you have to say and then stop. And be yourself. Let your personality come through so that you make person-to -person contact with your audience.
If you follow these simple steps, you'll see that you don't have to be afraid of public speaking. In fact, you may find the experience so enjoyable that you volunteer to make more speeches! You're not convinced yet? Give it a try and see what happens.

Solar energy for your home is coming. It can help you as a single home owner. It can help the whole country as well. Whether or not solar energy can save your money depends on many things. Where you live is one factor and the type of home you have is another. Things like insulation (绝缘材料), present energy costs, and the type of system you buy are added factors.
??? Using solar energy can help save our precious fuel. As you know, our supplies of oil and gas are very limited. There is just not enough on hand to meet all our future energy needs. Sooner or later Mother Nature will say that's all. The only way we can delay hearing those words is by starting to save energy now and by using other sources, like the sun.
??? We won't have to worry about the sun's running out of energy for another several billion years or so. Besides, the sun doesn't offer as many problems as other energy sources. For example, fossil fuel(矿物燃料) adds to already high pollution levels. With solar energy, we will still need sources of energy, but we won't need as much. That means we can cut down on our pollution problems.
With all these good points, why don't we use more solar power? There are many reasons for this. The biggest reason is money. Until now, it was just not practical for a home owner to put in a solar unit. There were cheaper sources of energy.
??? All that is changing now. Solar costs are starting to equal the costs of oil and electricity. Experts say that gas, oil and electricity prices will continue to rise. The demand for electricity is increasing rapidly. But new power plants will use more gas, oil or coal. Already in some places the supply of electricity is being rationed (限量供应). Solar energy is now in its infancy (初期). It could soon grow to become a major part of our nation's energy supply.
60. What's this passage mainly about??

??? C. Energy and pollution.??? D. Energy and money.
61. Solar energy can help us _____.
? A. escape punishment from nature B. become home owners?
??? C. get rid of present energy D. save our precious fuel

??? A. several million years? B. several hundred years
??? C. several billion years D. several thousand years
63. Which of the following statements is TRUE??
??? A. Energy from coal would not pollute our living environment.
??? B. Energy from natural gas would not pollute our living environment.
C. Energy from the sun would not pollute our living environment.
??? D. Energy from oil would not pollute our living environment.
64. Solar energy is now in its infancy, _____.
??? A. but in the future it will become an important part of our nation's energy supply
??? B. so we will build more power plants?
??? C. and the supply of electricity will be rationed throughout the country
D. so we don't need it

Dear Sir or Madame,
I'm glad to recommend my favorite English newspaper or magazine.
As a senior high school student, I like English Weekly best. Because it provide us students with sufficient exercises to master English and the background knowledge at the front page helps us further understand the passages in our textbooks. Besides, I am also fond of 21 Century. It's easy for us students to read the newspaper and we can read some fresh articles about current affairs, campus trends and so on. What's the most important is that we can improve our reading skill and enrich our vocabulary by reading this kind of newspaper.
Thank you very much.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
Happiness is for everyone. You don't need to care about those people who have beautiful houses with large gardens and swimming pools or those who have nice cars and a lot of money and so on. Why? Because those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads in their free time.
In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, you friends will help you; when you work hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice a bit of them, you can see that happiness is always around you.
Happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say you are very happy, because you have something else that can't be bought with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances to challenge yourself. So you cannot always say you are poor and you have bad luck. As the saying goes, life is like a revolving(旋转的) door: when it closes, it also opens. If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy and lucky person.
56. What kind of people can enjoy happiness according the passage?
A. Only those who have cars. B. Only those who have their own happiness.
C. Only those who have big houses. D. Only those who have a lot of money.
57. When you fall down in a PE class, both your teacher and your classmates will _______.
A. laugh at you B. play jokes on you C. quarrel with you D. help you up
58. What will your friends say to you when you make great progress?
A. Oh, so do I. B. Congratulations! C. Good luck! D. It's just so-so.
59. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. People who have cars would never like to walk in the open air.
B. You can get help from others when you make mistakes.
C. You can still be a happy person even if you have little money.
D. Happiness is always around you though difficulties come towards you.
60. Which of the following is this passage about?
A. Bad luck. B. Good luck. C. Happiness. D. Life
B
How often one hears children wishing they were grown-ups, and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.
Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. What's more, life is always giving new things to the child--things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is repeatedly being told not to do something, or being punished for what he has done.
When a young man starts to make his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of troubles and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.
61. According to Paragraph 2,the writer thinks that _______.
A. life for a child is fairly easy
B. a child is always loved whatever he does
C. a child must do something in return for what he gets
D. only children are interested in life

A. life is not enjoyable since each age has some pains
B. young men can have the greatest happiness if they work hard
C. childhood is the most enjoyable time in one's life
D. one is the happiest if he can make good use of each age in his life
63. The paragraph following this passage will most probably discuss _________.
A. examples of successful young men B. how to build up one's position in society
C. what to do when one has problems in life D. joys and pains of old people
C
We first think of the traditional or nuclear family. This is a two-generation family, the father, the mother and their own children. Most couples wanted to have four children, two boys and two girls.
Some nuclear families, however, may add one or more grandparents to come to live with them, which is three generations. This kind of family with grandparents, parents, and grandchildren is called extended family. This family type was not very common during the later half of the twentieth century, but it's becoming more common now as an elderly grandparent moves in to live with a son or daughter. This is more possible now that American homes have become larger. What is interesting, however, is that after the grandchildren move out of the home and start their own families, this extended family shrinks(收缩) back to a nuclear family, with just two generations again living together, a grandparent and parents, with the grandchildren coming only for occasional visits.
Now, the fatherless or motherless family is one kind of what we call a single-parent family. In the fatherless family it's just the mother and her children. This can be the result of the husband's death, of an unmarried mother, or of a separation or divorce. There are also a growing number of motherless families--where the father raises the children, for any of the same reasons. A fatherless family may also be motherless, but still a family with one adult. This is becoming more common in the big cities where a grandmother will raise her daughter's children while the daughter goes elsewhere to work.
One other new kind of family is becoming increasingly more common. A single parent with one or more children will marry again. Perhaps the other parent is also a single parent. Together they will start what is called a blended family, which blends together or combines the children of two families.
64. An extended family usually has ___________.
A. four generations B. three generations C. two generations D. one generation
65. Who usually looks after the children in a motherless or fatherless family in America?
A. The children's aunt. B. The children's nursery or school.
C. The children's grandmother. D. The children's neighbor.
66. A blended family is formed by _________.
A. two single-parent families B. a nuclear family and a grandparent
C. two motherless families D. two fatherless families
67. What is true to the fact in America?
A. There are more and more members in a family.
B. There are fewer and fewer members in a family.
C. More and more grandparents refuse to look after their grandchildren.
D. More and more grandparents live separately from their children.

Smoking is a habit that's closely linked to certain times and places. If you break these links, you can break the habit. The best way of doing this is to avoid the situations where you want a cigarette. If you can't avoid them, then you will have to fight off the temptation(诱惑). Sit down and think about when and where you usually have a cigarette. For example, do you always have one after breakfast? After other meals? In breaks at work? When you are watching television? With friends in the pub? Once you stop smoking, these times and places are going to be the danger spots, so work out how you are going to deal with them.
It will also help if you can make new habits to break the old one of smoking. So plan some new activities to replace smoking--things to draw away your attention, things to do with your hands, and different ways to deal with tensions.
Some people find it helps if they cut down on cigarettes before they actually give up. It's one way of preparing for the day you stop for good. But don't look on cutting down as an alternative to giving up, and don't do it for more than a couple of weeks at the very most. The danger is that you go back to smoking more than you did before.
68. What is the best way to stop smoking?
A. Avoid situations where you feel like a cigarette.
B. Avoid working with smokers in the same place.
C. Sit down and think about the situations where you smoke.
D. Do not bring cigarettes with you when you take a rest.
69. "The danger spots" are _________.

A. Something you are able to do in your spare time.
B. Something that might improve your skills.

71. One of the ways to stop smoking is to _________.
A. increase the time that you spend on other hobbies

This is the age of technological change, the disappearance of class difference and equal educational opportunities for everyone. Many old-fashioned ideas about what our children ought to do in life are no longer preferable. Apart from the traditional academic careers in science, medicine, law, and the arts, we also need skilled technicians, technologists and businessmen. We need to modernize our industries and give an encouragement to trade. Young people should be encouraged to see the value of all trades, crafts, and professions and to look upon the career they have chosen with interest and pride.
In the old days sons followed their father's trade or profession and took up the occupation that best suited the interests of the family and possibly of society too. Total freedom in the choice of a career is often a burden to the individual and a danger to society.
Nowadays most young people are encouraged to choose their own careers according to their personal abilities and interests. This concern for the vocational aspect of a career is all very well received, but young people are often poor judges of their own abilities and need guidance in the choice of a career.
72. What's new in this age that isn't mentioned in this passage?
A. Technological development. B. No class difference.
C. Equality of all the people. D. Freedom of women.
73. Traditionally, people didn't respect __________.
A. scientists B. businessmen C. lawyers D. doctors
74. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. In the old days sons took the same job as their fathers did.
B. In the old days sons took the job that their family members liked.
C. In the old days young people had total freedom in the choice of a career.
D. In the old days young people usually took a career that was accepted by the society.
75. Which of the following may be the problem when young people choose their career?
A. They haven't the freedom to make their own decisions.
B. They are not good at judging their own abilities.
C. They have to follow some people's advice.
D. They don't know their real interests.

Another Scientific Achievement
On Oct. 12th, 2005, Shenzhou VI with two astronauts was sent up into space from Jiuquan, Ganshu Province. After circling the earth 80 times at the height of up to 347 kilometers, it landed on the grassland in Inner Mongolian on Oct. 17th.
During the flight, the astronauts did a lot of scientific experiments according to the plan. They tasted as many as 50 kinds of food and even called and talked with their families from space.
The successful launch and return of Shenzhou VI is another great scientific achievement in space science of our country. We are really proud of it.
