From the jagged (锯齿状的) peaks of the Himalayas to the powerful Yangtze River that flows into the Pacific, China's vast terrain (地带) and varied climate make it the sixth most biologically diverse nation on the planet.
Since 1998, The Nature Conservancy has been working in China's northwest Yunnan Province to protect some of the amazing natural and cultural diversity unique to this country for its future generations. In cooperation with Chinese local and state government agencies, the Conservancy established the Yunnan Great Rivers Project, which protects an area about the size of West Virginia.

Edmund Halley was an English scientist who lived over 200years ago. He studied the observations of comets which other scientists had made. The orbit of one particular comet was a very difficult mathematical problem. He could not figure it out. Neither could other scientists who dealt with such problems.
However, Halley had a friend named Isaac Newton. Who was a brilliant mathematician. Newton thought he had already which he had done it. He told Halley that the orbit of a comet had the shape of an ellipse.
Now Halley set to work. He figured out the orbits of some of the comets that had been observed by scientist. He made a surprising discovery. The comets that had appeared in the years 1531, 1607 and 1682 all had the same orbit. Yet their appearances had been 75 to 76 years apart.
This seemed very strange to Halley. Three different comets followed the same orbit. The more Halley thought about it, the more he thought that there had not been three different comets, as people thought. He decided that they had simply seen the same comet three times. The comet had gone away and had come back again.
It was an astonishing idea! Halley felt certain enough to make a prediction of what would happen in the future. He decided that this comet would appear in the year 1758. There were 53 years to go before Halley's prediction could be tested.
In 1758 the comet appeared in the sky. Halley did not see it, for he had died some years before. Ever since then that comet been called Halley's comet, in his honor.

Millions of years ago dinosaurs lived on the earth. In the days of dinosaurs, the whole earth was warm and wet. There were green forests and they could find enough to eat. Later, parts of the earth became cold and dry, and the forests there died. Then dinosaurs could not find enough to eat. This must be one reason why dinosaurs died out.
We can guess another reason. New kinds of animals came on the earth. Some had big brains and strong .They could kill dinosaurs.
There may be other reasons that we don't know about yet. Scientists are are trying to make more discoveries about dinosaurs.
Dinosaurs were of many sizes and shapes. Some were as small as chickens, while some were about 90 feet long.
There were also terrible rights between dinosaurs. They night have happened more than 100 million years ago. Though there was no man to see any of the fights, we can be told by the animal's footprints(足迹)that fights did take place .

The blue tits(山雀) have been inspecting the nest-box again this year. The male is the house-hunter but the female will make the final choice. He lands at the hole and turns his head to expose his white cheeks as a signal to attract the female from where she has been feeding.
Among many birds that nest in holes, the male has a light-coloured patch on its plumage(鸟羽) which acts as signal for drawing the female's attention to a suitable nesting-place. Unlike the blue tit, the redstart(红尾鸲) may be only the male that strikingly coloured and the female is not beautiful.
A few years ago I was lucky enough to spot a pair of redstarts in action in a Walsh wood. The male was leading an interested female to holes that he had previously(先前) checked out. He sat at the entrance of each hole and put his head on to show off his white forehead, or his head in to reveal(显露) his tail.
If the female failed to react to his visual signals, the male sometimes sang for extra effect, while gliding towards her on spread wings and tail. Once the female accepts by following the male through the hole the displays stop, you must be at the right place at the right time to watch them.

A. They choose their nest together.
B. The male chooses their nest.
C. The house-hunter chooses their nest.
D. The female chooses their nest.

71. The writer is probably ________.
A. a bird expert B. a bird-hunter
C. a bird raiser D. a scientist

With only about 1, 000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone(克隆) the animal and save the endangered species(物种). That's a move similar to what a Texas A & M University researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah's Ark”.
Noah's Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos(胚胎), semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professor in Texas A & M's College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.
It is estimated that as many as 2, 000 species of mammals, birds reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.
This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal.
The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.
“The nuclear transfer(核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available(capable of being used) panda eggs could be a major problem,” Kraemer believes. “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (having a baby). It takes a long time and it's difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort,” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A& M, the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog.
“They are trying to do something that's never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah's Ark. We're both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and there's a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It's a research that is very much needed.”
72. The aim of “Noah's Ark” project is to _______.
A. make efforts to clone the endangered pandas
B. save endangered animals from dying out
C. collect DNA of endangered animals to study
D. transfer the nuclear of one animal to another
73. According to Professor Kraemer, the major problem in cloning pandas would be the lack of _______.
A. available panda eggs B. host animals
C. qualified researchers D. enough money
74. The best title for the passage may be _______.
A. China's Success in Pandas Cloning ????????????????????????????????
?????? B. The First Cloned Panda in the World

Do you want to live another 100 years or more? Some exports say that scientific advances will one day enable humans to last tens of years beyond what is now seen as the natural limit of the human life span.
“I think we are knowing at the door of immortality(永生).”said Michael Zey, a Montclair State University business professor and author of two books on the future. “I think by 2075____________________________ and that's a conservative estimate(保守估计的).”
At the conference in San Francisco, Donald Louria, a professor and author at New Jersey Medical School in Newwark said advances in using genes as well as nanotechnology(纳米技术)make it likely that humans will live in the future beyond what has been possible in the past. “There is a great push so that people can live from 120 to 180 years.” He said.“Some have suggested that there is no limit and that people could live to 200 or 300 or 500 years.”
However, many scientists who specialize in aging are doubted about it and say the human body is just not designed to last past about 120 years. Even with healthier lifestyles and less disease, they say failure of the brain and organs will finally lead all humans to death.
Scientists also differ on what kind of life the super aged might live. “It remains to be seen if you pass 120, you know; could you be healthy enough to have good quality of life? ” said Leonard Poon, director of the University of George Gerontology Centre. “At present people who could get to that point are not in good health at all.”

64.?B (文章第一句话“Millions of years ago dinosaurs lived on the earth.”
65. D(文章第一段介绍恐龙灭绝的一个原因是缺乏食物,而B项是导致食物缺乏的一个原因。)
66. B(第二段介绍恐龙灭绝的另一个原因是出现了更大、更强、更聪明的生物,它们有可能把恐龙杀灭。)
67. C(从文章第三段第二句话“Scientists are trying to make more discoveries about dinosaurs.”
The male is the house-hunter but the female will make the final choice
I was lucky enough to spot a pair of redstarts in action in a Walsh wood
A few years ago I was lucky enough to…和…you must be at the right place at the right time to see them 可知答案为D。
71. A 推断题。
73. A 细节题。从第6段第1句话 The nuclear transfer(核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available (capable of being used ) panda eggs could be a major problem 可以做出正确判断。

Dear Sir,
I'm writing to tell you something about our discussion on the topic“Whether Middle School Students Can Carry Mobile phones (Cell-phones)" at the class meeting.
Forty percent students agreed, for they thought it was convenient for them to communicate with their relatives and friends. They also thought they could surf the Internet to search for some information and store some useful information in the m. Besides, they could play games for rest if they feel tired after a long time's study.
However, sixty percent of us were against it. They said the radiation of cell-phones was harmful to health, and the ringing sound did somewhat affect the cell-phone holders and others. Also, cell-phones were luxurious things for middle school students and it was easy to lead them to compare with each other.
As far as I am concerned, I agree with the majority. It is not suitable for middle school students to have cell-phones. We can get in touch with others by other means and we can read more books to enrich ourselves.
Best wishes.

I was in a rush as always, but this time it was for an important date I just couldn' t be late for! I found myself at a checkout counter behind an elderly woman seemingly in no hurry as she paid for her groceries. A PhD student with not a lot of money, I had hurried into the store to pick up some flowers. I was in a huge rush, thinking of my upcoming evening. I did not want to be late for this date.
We were in Boston, a place not always known for small conversation between strangers. The woman stopped unloading her basket and looked up at me. She smiled. It was a nice smile —warm and reassuring — and I returned her_gift_by smiling back.
“Must be a special lady, whoever it is that will be getting those beautiful flowers,” she said.
“Yes, she' s special,” I said, and then to my embarrassment, the words kept coming out. “It' s only our second date, but somehow I am just having the feeling she's‘the one' ,”Jokingly, I added, “The only problem is that I can' t figure out why she' d want to date a guy like me.”
“Well, I think she's very lucky to have a boyfriend who brings her such lovely flowers and who is obviously in love with her,” the woman said. “My husband used to bring me flowers every week — even when times were tough and we didn' t have much money. Those were incredible days; he was very romantic and — of course — I miss him since he' s passed away.”
I paid for my flowers as she was gathering up her groceries. There was no doubt in my mind as I walked up to her. I touched her on the shoulder and said, “You were right, you know. These flowers are indeed for a very special lady.” I handed her the flowers and thanked her for such a nice conversation.
It took her a moment to realize that I was giving her the flowers I had just purchased.“You have a wonderful evening,”I said. I left her with a big smile and my heart warmed as I saw her smelling the beautiful flowers.
I remember being slightly late for my date that night and telling my girlfriend the above story. A couple of years later, when I finally worked up the courage to ask her to marry me,she told me that this story had helped to seal it for her — that was the night that I won her heart.

We already know the fastest, least expensive way to slow climate change: Use less energy. With a little effort, and not much money, most of us could reduce our energy diets by 25 percent or more — doing the Earth a favor while also helping our wallets.
Not long ago, my wife, PJ, and I tried a new diet — not to lose a little weight but to answer an annoying question about climate change. Scientists have reported recently that the world is heating up even faster than predicted only a few years ago,and that the consequences could be severe if we don' t keep reducing emissions (排放) of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases that are trapping heat in our atmosphere.
We decided to try an experiment. For one month we recorded our personal emissions of CO2. We wanted to see how much we could cut back, so we went on a strict diet. The average US household(家庭) produces about 150 pounds of CO2 a day by doing common place things like turning on air?conditioning or driving cars. That' s more than twice the European average and almost five times the global average, mostly because Americans drive more and have bigger houses. But how much should we try to reduce?
For an answer, I checked with Tim Flannery, author of The Weather Makers: How Man Is Changing the Climate and What It Means for Life on Earth.in his book, he had challenged readers to make deep cuts in personal emissions to keep the world from reaching extremely important tipping_points,such as the melting (融化) of the ice sheets in Greenland or West Antarctica. “To stay below that point, we need to reduce CO2 emissions by 80 percent,” he said.
Good advice, I thought.I' d opened our bedroom windows to let in the wind. We' d gotten so used to keeping our air?conditioning going around the clock.I' d almost forgotten the windows even opened. We should not let this happen again. It' s time for us to change our habits if necessary.
