My mother believed in using things up. Last year, our cornfield had a bad harvest because birds feasted on the crops. It was probably then that Mom’s frugality(节俭) became even more extraordinary. She began keeping everything that seemed useless in the attic(阁楼)—worn-out clothes, old sheets, broken umbrellas, and some other old items. Mom’s favorite saying was “waste not, want not”. My brother Josh and I weren’t sure what that meant until the “Affair of the Scarecrow(稻草人)”, which, as it later became known, left a lasting impression on us.
The story began with a pretty hat that Mom received as a gift to protect her from the sun. However, Josh and I could see that Mom’s frugal nature and fashion sense were in battle. Mom really didn’t want to get rid of the hat—it was new and had a lot of use left in it—but neither could she stand wearing it. She tried to take off the fancy decorations, but they were stuck on tight. She’d have to find some other solution.
Josh and I watched as Mom headed upstairs to the attic with the hat. “Waste not, want not,” she called back down. We heard boxes being moved around. Moments later, Mom leaned out, holding a flour bag full of straw, and with a mysterious smile, she placed the hat on it.
“What is that for ” I asked, confused. “A scarecrow!” Mom exclaimed. “But not a good one yet. It needs a strong body to stand firm in the field,” she said with a frown. “And it doesn’t look scary enough,” Josh remarked. I had to admit that Josh, though younger than I was, could sometimes be more imaginative. Josh and I turned to each other, searching for a good idea. Soon enough, Josh’s eyes lit up with inspiration.

In my community there is a little boy who suffered from congenital muscle disease. He always considered himself the most unfortunate person in the world. Although he looked no different from ordinary people, it’s difficult for him to do some delicate movements. He often lost control of his hands and dropped things on the ground. Even after a short run, he would easily get out of breath. Depression and inferiority made him almost always alone. All of these make his mother very worried.
Then one spring, the boy’s mother bought some saplings (树苗) from a nearby market. She intended to plant them in the forecourt. She told her children to plant a sapling each person. The mother said to her three children, “Whose seedling grows best, I will buy him or her a favorite gift.” The boy also wanted to get his mother’s gift. But seeing his brothers and sisters carrying water to water the trees happily, anyhow, an idea hit him: he hoped the tree he planted would die soon. So watering it once or twice, he never attended to it.
Several days later, when the little boy went to see his tree again, he was surprised to find it grew some fresh leaves instead of withering (枯萎), and compared with the trees of his brother and sister, his appeared greener and more vital. He wondered what on earth had happened. As expected, his mother kept her promise, bought the little boy his favorite gift and said to him, “From the tree you plant, you will become an outstanding botanist (植物学家) when you grow up.”
Since then, the little boy slowly became optimistic. One day, the little boy lay on the bed but couldn’t sleep. Looking at the bright moonlight outside the window, he suddenly recalled what the bi ology teacher once said, plants generally grow at night.

Growing up, I rarely heard people in my family say, “I love you.” We’re the kind of people made uncomfortable by expressions of love.
Recently, I took my ten-year-old daughter and fourteen-year-old son to visit the great grandma in the nursing home and on the drive there I shared stories about her with the kids. I told them how Great Grandma was bright but grew up in a time and place where women, especially women from rural Tennessee, had few opportunities.
Great Grandma was kind and generous, but I told my kids she could be competitive, too. For instance, when I was a kid, she never let me win at cards.
The Great Grandma I described, the one from my memories, is a stranger to my kids. To them, she’s a small, white-haired woman with dementia (痴呆) who eats only chicken noodle soup and can still kick their butts (屁股) at Scrabble but needs to be reminded of their names and to turn on her hearing aids. We’re all fond of the current version of Great Grandma, but visiting her in a nursing home feels foreign to me. She’s weak and dependent, and I’m surprised at the situation because she’s no longer like the version of her that I know.
On the day of our visit, Great Grandma expected company, so she opened her door as soon as we knocked, greeting us with a big smile, telling us to come in even if she wasn’t certain who we were.
She began our visit by showing us pictures of blankets she gifted to others, and proudly showed us a blanket she was working on now. After that, we took Great Grandma out for a lunch of chicken noodle soup.
At the car my son helped her into the front seat, asking gently, “Are you in ” Then he shut the door and carried her wheelchair to the trunk of the car. When we returned from lunch, perhaps inspired by her brother’s concern, my daughter offered to get Great Grandma’s walker when my son volunteered to help Great Grandma out.
Back in Great Grandma’s room, the kids began to chat with her.

Facing the heavy snowfall and thick layers of ice on the road, David was rushing to get to another city. He had little choice. He was heading there for a job interview as he needed a second job to be able to afford a good lawyer for himself, for he had recently been stuck in a legal battle about his house. Afraid of losing the chance, David risked his life and decided to drive miles away in a snowstorm to another city where the interview was.
However, as he approached the crossing, David suddenly came to a stop. He saw a little girl appear terrified with fear. David knew he’d most likely miss the interview, but he couldn’t leave the young girl alone in the heavy snowstorm, so he got off his van and asked what was the matter. “My mommy is in danger! Can you please help us ” she cried, “Mommy is just so hurt, and I am so scared and so cold!”
David took off his coat and placed it on the girl’s shoulders. “Can you take me to your mommy ” he asked. “I can call the ambulance and help her.” The little girl nodded, pointing her finger away. So, after rescuing the 5 years old girl named Mia from the snowstorm, David took her to his van, and through her directions, a mile later, he noticed a car crashed into a pole. Before getting out, David called 911. Then he dashed to the car, where he discovered Mia’s mother, unconscious and severely injured in the driver’s seat.
David helped her out of the car and onto the van. When 911 arrived, he locked his van and accompanied Mia and her mother to the hospital. Thankfully, a couple of hours later, he received word from the doctors that Mia’s mother, Laura, had regained consciousness and was out of danger.

I’d just returned from a beautiful fall early-morning walk with my dog. At the front door, I dug around in my pockets for the keys. When I discovered I didn’t have them, I decided to return to the paths we’d taken. I would surely spot them in plain sight.
My little dog ran in excitement that we would do a repeat of our just-finished outing. I spent an hour looking but the keys remained lost. I was beginning to get upset as I thought of the consequences of losing them, so I continued to retrace our steps, but in vain.
At home again, I pulled the backup key from its hiding place, let myself in the house, and fell on the couch in exhaustion. At my age, one trip is usually plenty! I began to take key inventory(库存). The house key wasn’t that important as I had an extra. I had a spare car key, but it was temperamental(不可靠的), and the key ring would be expensive to replace. The iron heart decoration made by my grandson was precious beyond measure. For some reason, thinking of it being gone forever made tears come to my eyes. But life is too short to agonize(折磨)over these things, I reminded myself.
That night, it turned colder and we had a snow shower. I enjoyed a comfort-food dinner, played soft music, and settled into a peaceful evening.
It was peaceful until I heard the horrible screech of my car alarm bursting from the garage. I rushed to the car, inserted(插入)the temperamental key in the door and finally opened it, and then started it until the alarm stopped.
Back in the house, I waited uneasily, but the next sound was the front doorbell. Assuming it was a neighbor ready to be angry with me, I opened the door slowly and turned on the light with apologies ready.

【答案】 “Come with me!” Josh called out. The next instant, he raced upstairs with lightning speed. I hurried to follow him into the attic, where we began a thorough search. Mom was amused by our excitement when we found the broken umbrellas and used them as the backbone of the Scarecrow. After that, we sorted out some old sheets and tied them on. The scarecrow now looked even scarier. We dragged our creation to the cornfield and planted it firmly in the mud, our hearts full of hope.
In the days that followed, the scarecrow stood tall. Serving as a silent guardian, it successfully scared the birds away. Under its watchful eyes, our cornfield flourished this year. To our amazement, Mom’s useless things from the attic had come together to create something extraordinary. As we enjoyed a good harvest, her favorite saying, “waste not, want not”, echoed in our hearts. The “Affair of the Scarecrow” has taught us the value of creatively transforming seemingly useless items into treasure, making us aware that frugality is a good quality after all.

【答案】
When we said goodbye to Great Grandma, both of my kids hugged her. They told her, “Love you.” To be honest, these two words caught me off-guard. We don’t say “I love you” at home often—before bed, at school drop-off, even after apologizing for a sudden quarrel. But, in Great Grandma’s room the words floated in the air, fairly brand-new. She didn’t say or hear those words quite as often as we did. I wasn’t sure how they would be received.
To my surprise, Great Grandma was excited to receive love. Dementia removed her of what once made such expressions something to be embarrassed by. She squeezed each kid. She told them she loved them. Then it was my turn. I hesitated. But then, because of the examples set by my son and my daughter, I hugged Great Grandma. And when Great Grandma hugged me, I finally told her, “I love you, too.” I felt very happy to speak my mind at last.

【答案】As David and Mia visited Laura, the little girl ran to her mother and hugged her. “It’s David that saved us, Mommy!” Mia said excitedly. Laura extended her heartfelt gratitude to David, “You brought me here! I just can’t thank you enough for it!” Then Laura inquired about David’s plan for the evening. David explained that he was on his way to a job interview in another city so that he could afford a lawyer. On hearing this, Laura expressed her dismay at David missing the job interview. David reassured Laura, stating that he is merely concerned about securing a lawyer’s assistance. At that very moment, an idea came into Laura’s mind.
It turned out that Laura was a professional lawyer. “Take it easy, David! Actually, I’m a lawyer.” said Laura, with a smile playing around her mouth. She generously offered to defend David for free and asked David to tell her his case in detail. Feeling a wave of surprise and joy sweeping over him, David advised Laura to have a good rest first. Two months later, with the help of Laura, David won the lawsuit and successfully saved his house. As the old saying goes, “one good turn deserves another”. After that, David continued to help those in need.

In the snow stood a smiling neighbor, with my keys hanging from her finger. One of them held out her hand with my keys in it and a big smile on her face! I wanted to hug her to express my deepest gratitude, but because of COVID-19, all I could do was say, “Oh, my goodness! Thank you!” She told me that my car key had an alarm button, and they kept pressing it until they found my home. I took the keys in my hands and thanked them again and again.
I was amazed by her cleverness and couldn’t wait to thank her. Before she and the other neighbors waved goodbye and disappeared into the evening snow, she said, “It’s not a big deal. We are so happy to help. You would have done the same thing!” I don’t think I would have done the same thing! Pressing the alarm until I heard a car alarm would not have occurred to me. I was astonished by her clever kindness and wished I could have hugged her. Instead, I hugged the keys.
