Step 1 Lead-in
Show a short video to the students and ask the students some questions:
Do you like animals?
What animals do you know?
What’s your favourite animal
Why do you like… Because…
Step 2 Presentation
Lead students to say something about animals.
Ants can smell things well. Its ears are like open fans. Birds can make beautiful sounds and even speak. There are only seven bones in its long neck.

Step 3 Learning and guessing
1. Ask the students to finish Part A.
(1) Show some pictures to learn some words.

(2) Talk about the pictures.
Example:
T: What is it
S: It is a rabbit.
T: Do you like it
S: Yes, I like it very much.
T: Why do you like it
S: Because it is lovely. It has two long ears. It often jumps and runs here and there. I can feed it carrots when it is hungry. That will be interesting.
(3)The students drew some pictures of their pets. Look at the parts of the pictures and write the names of the animals under them.
(4) Check the answers.

2. T: There are many other lovely animals in the world. We can raise them as pets. Let’s play a guessing game!
Guess what kind of animal it is!
(1) It lives in the holes (洞穴) and it loves rice (大米). It likes moving around at night. It’s also dangerous because it may cause disease (疾病). —mouse (pl. mice)
(2) It always sleeps in the daytime. Its duty is to catch mice. It miaows when it feels hungry. —cat
(3) It likes running after the ball. It’s favourite food is bones (骨头). When it sees somebody strange, it will bark. —dog
(4) It looks lovely and cute. It likes eating carrots. Its eyes are red. It has long ears. —rabbit
(5) It can’t live without water. It looks beautiful and colorful. People usually keep it in a tank made of glass. —goldfish (pl. goldfish)
(6) It’s a kind of bird with colorful feathers. People usually keep it in a cage (笼子). It can repeat simple words or sing songs. —parrot
(7) It’s so cute that most Chinese people like it. It likes eating bamboo shoots (竹笋). It’s also the symbol (象征) of China. —panda
(8) It is one of the cleverest animals in the world. It likes to eat bananas. It likes to live in the forests. —monkey
(9) It is a large animal. Sometimes it is very friendly. It has big ears and long noses. —elephant
Step 4 Practice
1. Ask the students to finish Part B on page 93.
The students are talking about why they like their pets. Match the two parts to make correct sentences. Write the correct letters in the blanks.
2. Check the answers.

3. Ask the students to read the sentences in groups.
4. Ask them to share their own sentences.
Examples:
I like my tortoise because it can live up to 150 years old.
I like my rabbit because I can feed it carrots.

I like my white mouse because I can hold it in my hand.

5. Ask the students to make a dialogue in pairs.

Step 5 Presentation
1. Lead in Eddie’s favourite pet to learn a short dialogue.
I have a pet. He has a tail (尾巴) and four paws (爪子). His fur (皮毛) is yellow. He likes to eat and sleep. He is fat and lazy, but very lovely. We can see him every day.
2. Listen to the conversation and answer the questions.
(1) What time is it
(2) What does Eddie want Hobo to do
(3) What does Eddie think in the end
Answers:
(1) It’s 12: 30. (2) Bring him something to eat. (3) He wants a new pet.
3. Ask the students to read the conversation and discuss the question.
What can we learn from the conversation
Possible answer:
We should be polite and kind to others. /We should be hard-working.
4. Ask the students to read the conversation loudly and try to act it out.
Step 6 Language points
1. Please bring me something to eat. 请给我带些吃的东西来。
bring sb. sth. / bring sth. to sb. 把某物给某人拿来
Please bring me a cup of water.
=Please bring a cup of water to me. 请给我拿杯水来。

2. That’s it. 这就对了。
“That’s it.”为口语中的常用表达, 意思是“就是这样, 正是如此; 行了, 够了; 就这样定了”。
