Lesson 24: An E-mail to Grandpa

Ask the students to have a free talk. What would you like to do on the Internet Why How often do you use your computer for work, study or fun 2. The students talk about it. Ask some students to answer the questions. 3. List the things they do on the blackboard. Possible answers: E-mail with friends and family. Chat online with friends. Write blogs. E-mail with strangers. Send, receive or post photos with friends. Play online games. Download programs. Read books. Shop online. Step 2 Reading and answering 1. Give them some time to read the e-mail and then answer the following questions. (1) What is Wang Mei writing (2) What can she do with the Internet 2. Check the answers together. Answers: (1) She is writing an e-mail on her new laptop. (2) She can talk with others, do the research, read e-books and find her way around the city online. Step 3 Listening and writing 1. Let them skim the following sentences silently. (Let’s Do It! No. 1) (1) Wang Mei is writing an e-mail on her new computer. (2) Wang Mei wants to set up a time to go online together with Danny. (3)This week at school, Wang Mei wrote a report about Christmas. (4) Wang Mei will download some e-books for her grandpa. 2. Play the recording. Let them listen and write true (T) or false (F). 3. Step 7 Doing a survey T: What do your classmates often do on the Internet Do a survey of your class and write down the top two answers. (Let’s Do It! No. 4) Example: There are 64 students in my class. Of all the 64 students, 33 students like to write e-mails and search for information on the Internet.
Ask them to read their survey again and think if their classmates use the Internet properly. Then give the students some advice: “Use the Internet properly and carefully. Don’t spend too much time on the Internet.” Step 8 Summary Learn about the things that Wang Mei can do on a computer and with the Internet. Step 9 Language points 1.
