Decisions in life are rarely black and white but usually involve shades of gray. At dinner time, the decision you face is not between fasting and eating like a pig, but whether to take that extra spoonful of food. When exams are around the corner, your decision is not between quitting them and studying 24 hours a day, but whether to spend an extra hour reviewing your notes. Economists use the term “marginal changes” to describe minor adjustments to an existing plan of action.
In many situations, people make the best decisions by thinking at the margin. Margin means “edge”. so marginal changes are adjustments around the edges of what you are doing. Suppose, for instance, that you ask a friend for advice about how many years to stay in school. If he compares the lifestyle of a person with a Ph. D. to that of a grade school dropout, you might complain that this comparison is not helpful for your decision. You have some education already and most likely are deciding whether to spend an extra year or two in school. To make this decision, you need to know the additional benefits that an extra year in school would offer (higher salaries throughout life and the pure joy of learning) and the additional costs that you would pay (tuition and the forgone salaries while you are in school) By comparing these marginal benefits and marginal costs, you can evaluate whether the extra year is worthwhile.
Individuals and firms can make better decisions by thinking at the margin. A sensible decision-maker takes action if and only if the marginal benefit of the action exceeds the marginal cost.
24.What does “fasting” underlined in Paragraph 1 mean
A.Eating or drinking a lot. B.Eating little or no food.
C.Eating on a regular basis. D.Eating without appetite.
25.Why does the author give an example in Paragraph 2
A.To explain marginal thinking. B.To encourage adjustments.
C.To evaluate marginal thinking. D.To solve real-life problems.
26.What can we infer from the text
A.Comparison makes little sense in decision-making.
B.It is unnecessary to make minor adjustments to plans.
C.People often weigh up benefits and costs of decisions.
D.Marginal changes are quite debatable among individuals.
27.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Marginal Thinking Leads to Better Decisions
B.Marginal Benefit Goes beyond Marginal Cost
C.Rational Thinkers Exist in All Aspects of Life
D.Pleasure Often Results from Effective Comparison

Standing in my office 25 years ago was a young astronomer. She had an incredible request that my team revise our software to do something beyond our design, and risk breaking it. All to carry out a seemingly impossible experiment — to prove that a massive black hole existed in our Milky Way. My initial “no way” gradually gave way in the face of her cheerful but unshakable determination. It was my first meeting with Andrea Ghez, one of the winners of Nobel Prize in Physics 2020.
For 25 years Andrea has been searching for evidence of a black hole at the heart of our galaxy(银河系). But the work has been defined by technology. Scientific equipment was never designed to meet Andrea’s need—analyzing the image data at super speed. But she was not to give in and our team just made the changes. And it worked! It was extremely hard and time-consuming, but Andrea insisted. Out of that effort came the first evidence of stars orbiting a black hole.
Andrea is fond of owing her success to the interaction between astronomers and engineers responding to the challenge. Science questions generate new technology and new technology generates new science. Andrea has always pioneered in this virtuous cycle(良性循环). She created UCLA Galactic Centre to promote research and technical developments.
Today, Andrea received the highest scientific recognition. But as she would be the very first to knowledge, this success represents the combined efforts of so many. From the theoretical prediction of Albert Einstein, through the amazing telescopes and observatory locations, to the technical workers it is the product of thousands.
But in my eyes, it was just one person that had the insistence and focus to make the idea happen. That person is my friend and permanent workmate, the one who refused to take “no” for an answer—Andrea Ghez.
28.Why did Andrea Ghez pay the first visit to the author
A.To appreciate a software design. B.To promote a high-tech product.
C.To conduct an astronomy research. D.To demand a change of software.
29.What has Andrea Ghez been insisting on
A.Developing super speed equipment. B.Looking for evidence of a black hole.
C.Carrying out outer space experiment. D.Searching for new stars in the galaxy.
30.Which of the following best describes Andrea Ghezi
A.Artistic and reserved. B.Innovative and controlling.
C.Pioneering and determined. D.Conventional and disciplined.
31.What does the author think of Andrea Ghez
A.Admirable. B.Fashionable. C.Troublesome. D.Average.

Is there a link between social media and depression Do Facebook and Instagram have a negative impact on your mental health It’s complicated(复杂的).
Sometimes, looking through Instagram just makes you feel bad. You try not to envy your friends, but they always seem to be traveling somewhere cool, eating something fancy, or looking cute in perfect just-rolled-out-of-bed hair. On the other hand, there are times when you laugh at funny emoji, catch up with old friends, and feel happy to belong to fun social media communities. Clearly, social media isn’t all bad.
People are increasingly suspecting (怀疑) that there’re potential problems of social media. Things like cyberbullying, screen addiction, and being exposed to endless beautiful images that make it impossible not to make comparisons between yourself and others often make the news. In July, a big study came out in the journal JAMA titled “Association of Screen Time and Depression in Adolescence.” This big headline seems to confirm what a lot of people have been saying —screen time is horrible for young people.
The study followed over 3,800 adolescents over four years as part of a drug and alcohol prevention program. Part of what the investigators measured was the teens’ amount of screen time, including time spent on social media, as well as their levels of depression. One of their main findings was that higher amounts of social media use were associated with higher levels of depression. That was true both when the researches compared between people and compared each person against their own mental health over time.
Case closed Not so fast. Before we end the debate once and for all, let’s take a closer look at this and other studies. Let’s ask ourselves: what exactly is the relationship between social media use and depression It turns out there are several warnings.
32.Why do people sometimes feel bad when looking through Instagram
A.They feel unbalanced. B.They can travel nowhere.
C.They don’t look perfect. D.They lack contact with old friends.
33.Why is the article in journal JAMA mentioned
A.To comment. B.To suggest. C.To prove. D.To explore.
34.Which may agree with the findings of the study
A.Teens’ amount of screen time is limited. B.Depression is related to social media use.
C.It is not easy to tell reasons for depression. D.Social media contributes to physical health.
35.What’s the best title of the text
A.Shall people reduce screen time B.How to reduce depression
C.Why is it time to give up social media D.Does social media cause depression

Why A Dose Of Fear Is Good For You
Eleanor Roosevelt once said: “Do one thing every day that scares you.” She was onto something. Science has shown that feeling fear —in the right doses(量)—has several benefits.
·Feeling fear is fun and exciting. Many people scare themselves on purpose. 36 When you step outside your comfort zone, it is fear that makes you feel alive, which is fun and exciting. The excitement generated can also help reduce depression by increasing adrenaline (肾上腺素), which in turn increases excitement and glucose(changed into energy). 37 Therefore, A dose of fear is an “eraser” for the mind.
· 38 Being afraid of something can remind you of an area of your life that is limiting you. For instance, if you’re afraid of flying but face the fear and gather up the courage to step on an airplane, you can travel the world. Adding to your experiences means that you’ll create a varied life. You’ll also have fewer regrets.
·Fear makes you aware of what’s really important in life. How often have you said to yourself: “When I have more time, I’ll spend it with my family, pursue my passion, eat healthier or exercise more” Fear makes you realize that “now” is the only time you have to achieve and follow through what is most important. 39
Some say where fear meets courage is the sweet spot in which mountains get climbed and rivers are run. 40 We should all embrace our fear. Not the big fears that are life-threatening but the helpful fears that come in small doses.
A.Fear helps you succeed.
B.“Later” is never ensured.
C.Fear allows you to live life to the fullest.
D.They watch scary movies, ride roller coasters or go skydiving.
E.And every time you come through a challenge, you feel empowered.
F.Most of all, fear can be the birth place of change, creativity and innovation.
G.Actually, it’s nearly impossible to be thinking of your worries when you are experiencing fear.

“I want a friend!” my five-year-old’s clear blue eyes showed the pain of refusal. Noah is deaf, and the past couple of years have begun to show what the future holds for my little guy.
The first few years of his life, Noah had many friends in our neighborhood. Small children don’t talk a lot and are content to simply play. As time passed and Noah got to the age where speech and hearing were a noticeable part of “hanging out,” his friends started realizing he was different. Soon, no one came to play with my tiny son, and he too began to understand he was different. My heart ached, and I had spent endless hours in tears, begging God to send him a friend. But the children at school came from everywhere, and none lived near enough to “hang out.”
Noah recently began the heartbreaking hobby of writing and leaving mail on the porch(门廊) for his “friends.” He stuck his own toys to the notes, thinking that he could somehow make friends this way. I often had to retrieve(取回) his notes so that he thought someone had got his messages of friendship. His excited trips to the front porch the next morning would sometimes offer him a feeling of having an unseen pen friend. It really broke my heart.
One day, my phone rang, and I was distracted by a long-distance friend, sharing each other’s lives without noticing Noah slipping out of the front door. It wasn’t until Nick, my sixteen-year-old so n came home for lunch that Noah’s absence was known. Panic-stricken, Nick and I searched the house, yard, and garage ... no Noah!
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

第二部分(满分 25 分)
Trembling, I searched the house again, my heart pounding with a million frightened thoughts coming through my brain. The thought of a deaf child on his own threw me into a panic. “I found him!” Nick yelled from outside of the house. “Come here, Mom.” I could feel awe in his voice, and I hurried around to see. Down the street, four children were playing excitedly. Noah was right in the middle of it. Like brothers and sisters, they were jumping, laughing and chasing each other around the trees. Tears slid down my cheeks.
I let them play until lunchtime, at last walking down the street to retrieve my child. I watched from a distance, and joy filled my heart. Three little kids, not knowing what a gift they were giving a little boy who was deaf, looked like angels to me. “Noah can’t hear, though. His ears don’t work very well.” I told Noah’s new friends. “But he can climb and we like playing with him”, answered a girl excitedly. Finally they waved good-bye and Noah arrived home. He looked up at me with a priceless smile signed “friends” to me. My heart just filled with gratitude.
