As many people did, Shannon, when told the approach of a heavy snow by the weather forecast, also was confident that she had time to finish her job. As a professor in fiancé, she had to drive 25 kilometers from her home to a neighboring city to give an important lecture to the public.
As she was leaving, the winter snow began to fall. Maybe, the main road would be too icy for a trip, Shannon said to herself. Without hesitation, she turned to a dirt road, where she quickly became lost, with no ability to see the edge of the road from a rolled-down window. After a while she stopped and called 911.
“The operator took my information and told me to be patient and keep the car warm until the snow ended as my tank was full and I was warm. I waited almost 14 hours and nobody has called me yet to check in," she wrote in a Facebook post.
Would the gas tank last until morning What if I was hit by another vehicle What if I didn’t make it home at all Shannon wondered.
Determined to ensure the safest end, she went out in the storm and discovered her location on a road sign, and then found a neighborhood Facebook group for the area, which she was passing through, and informed others of her plight through a Google Maps pin.
That was when 80-year-old Andre, a retired rescuer, got a call about Shannon’s situation. He went out to find her, on foot, since he couldn’t manage to start his tractor.
On the way he found three other trapped vehicles. He walked the quarter mile there and back, and led the helpless cars one by one to his home. Bouvier let the survivors sleep at his house, where they ate and laughed, and departed the next morning after he had cleaned the driveway.

Do you think the secret to a good night’s sleep could be a pencil and paper Researchers at Baylor University published a study that showed writing a to-do list helps people get to sleep faster.
“There are two different ideas about this,” The lead researcher, Scullin said. “One is that writing about the future would lead to increased worry about unfinished tasks and delay sleep, while writing about completed activities would not trigger worry. The alternative hypothesis (假设) is that writing a to-do list will offload those thoughts and reduce worry.”
To test the hypotheses, researchers invited 57 men and women between ages 18 and 30 to spend one weeknight in a controlled sleep lab and they were divided into two groups, the experimental group and the control group. Five minutes before bedtime, each participant was instructed to complete a short writing exercise. The first group wrote about anything they needed to remember to do in the upcoming days, while the other wrote about tasks they had completed during the previous days. When the exercise was done, participants went to bed.
Researchers measured each participant’s brain activity overnight using a technique called polysomnography (睡眠多项生理检查) , which records eye movement, muscle activity and other biological changes.
The researchers found that the participants who wrote to-do lists fell asleep an average of 9 minutes faster than those who wrote about already-accomplished tasks. While 9 minutes may not seem to be a long time, it’s the same improvement seen in some tests for sleep medications, Scullin said.
Scullin noted that while the sample size was suitable for a laboratory-based study, a larger future study would be of value. “Measures of personality, anxiety, and depression might moderate the effects of writing on falling asleep, and that could be explored in an investigation with a larger sample,” he said. “The study involved health y young adults, and so we don’t know whether our findings would be true to patients with sleeplessness, though some writing activities have previously been suggested to benefit such patients.”
28.What does the word “trigger” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Reduce. B.Cause. C.Control. D.Rid.
29.What’s the difference between the experimental group and the control group
A.The sleeping hours of the participants. B.The age and gender of the participants.
C.The content of their writing exercises. D.The measuring method of brain activity.
30.What can we know about the effect brought by writing a to-do list before bed
A.It is similar to taking sleep medications. B.It makes falling asleep harder.
C.It shows no improvement. D.It helps to lengthen the sleeping hours.
31.What is the writing purpose of the last paragraph
A.To analyze the cause of the experiment. B.To criticize the drawback of the experiment.
C.To show the significance of the experiment. D.To state the limitation of the experiment.

The area around Taal Lake on Luzon Island in the Philippines is known for its natural beauty. Tourism is popular there as travelers go there to see the scenery that surrounds Taal Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the country. It was quiet for years until January 12,2020 when the volcano erupted. Since then, the cities surrounding the volcano have been covered with ash and many people are forced to leave home.
But the ash didn’t stop the residents of Binan, a city that is 35 km south of Manilla, from finding a way to help their neighbors in the towns that suffered the most from Taal. Binan Mayor Walfredo Dimaguila ordered the city residents to collect the ash and to put it in sacks(麻袋) to be sent to the state-owned factory that can produce 5,000 bricks(砖) a day to turn it into bricks to use for rebuilding damaged communities.
“What we plan is to turn them into hollow blocks and bricks and sell them to interested companies,” Dimaguila said. But he noted, the money would be donated to the people directly affected by the volcano. “When Batangas(the region where Taal is located) is in recovery, the bricks can not only be used to build schools, community halls and livelihood centers but also help deal with ash pollution for the earth,” Dimaguila said. “The misfortune of our neighbors in Batangas is there. Let’s transform this into opportunity.”
The Philippines, located in the Pacific “Ring of Fire: zone of fire” and part of the typhoon belt, is a country that is known for natural disasters like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and major storms. But the Filipino people show their strong will and community spirit.
32.What can be learned about Taal Volcano
A.It attracts more and more settlers. B.It becomes inactive.
C.It is covered with ash completely. D.It causes damage to the locals.
33.What are people advised to do according to Walfredo Dimaguila
A.To collect volcanic ash for recycling. B.To save sacks for factories to use.
C.To set up a factory for making bricks. D.To build communities for people from disasters.
34.Which can best describe Dimaguila’s plan

Susan wasn’t doing well enough at school before, or at least she wasn’t confident about herself. She wished she could do better here in her new school.
“Who would like to present your understanding of the poem ” Mr. Lee, the literature teacher, looked around the classroom. Susan lowered her head to avoid the teacher’s eyes. She was afraid to be laughed at if she made a mistake.
“Kara ” the teacher asked instead. Oh, perfect, Susan raised her head a bit. Of course Kara got the answer right again. Everyone clapped their hands, and Susan gave a quick look at Kara with admiration. Kara noticed her and gave back her a smile. Susan felt warm.
Soon, sadness filled Susan’s heart again. She hadn’t made any friends of her own so far. She felt so lonely that she really hoped someone like Kara would come up and call her a friend. Also, how she wished she were Kara, who was the most popular girl in school-always surrounded by several boyfriends, best friends and others. Kara was like shining sunshine.
Then, still in the class, some old memories crossed Susan’s mind. Growing up on a farm near a big forest, Susan lived every day to the fullest on the farm with Grandpa, fishing in the river, setting a camp fire, climbing the tallest trees and making friends with the lovely creatures in the forest. Grandpa would hug her and call her “my sunshine”. The old man was always proud of his little girl and Susan was sure she was the queen of the forest. She smiled at all her thoughts.
Literature class finally ended, and all the students headed for the gym. The class had been playing basketball. Kara, of course, was the best player. Beside her, Susan felt like very small and awkward. Today, however, the gym teacher led the students to a big tree in the yard and said, “Everyone! You’re going to climb this tree today. Just try your best.” Hearing the teacher’s words, Susan lit up.
Many of the classmates tried but failed, including Kara. Then came her turn.
