For some days I just found the mail delivery in our street a little different. I opened my mailbox as usual. Nothing, but my neighbors’ mail. The man who delivered the mails must have made a mistake. What else could it have been
I was reaching out for my neighbor’s mailbox when a tall man ran out of my neighbor’s house, shouting about messing with his friend’s mail. He snatched (夺过) the mail from my hand, opened the mailbox and pointed to the mail inside. “What are you going to do with it ”
Feeling my face burning, I shook my head, “No, believe me. I got this mail by mistake in my box today. I was just bringing it to them.” He gave me a funny look and went back into his house.
I got the knock on the door the next morning by two very polite officers. The annoyed tall man had phoned the police and told them I was a crazy old woman going around mixing up everyone’s mail. Before I could finish telling them about what was going on, everyone, including the officers, the tall man and me, was surprised by what was happening outside. A dog approached my mailbox with mail in his mouth. He took out the mail that was in my box and put some letters in. Then, he pushed the door closed with his nose, picked up the new pile of mail he had gotten from my box, and repeated this all the way down the next street. We all started laughing.
The dog had kept company with the postman, who had died last month. The dog had been trained to put mail in and take mail out of the boxes. After he was left alone, he was settled in a local animal shelter. When he got loose for some reason, he assumed his duties.
I shared the whole story with the tall man. He said sorry to me and got touched by the dog story. He did, moreover, adopt the little guy.

Parents everywhere praise their kids. Jenn Berman, author of The A to Z Guide to Raising Happy and Confident Kids, says, “We’ve gone to the opposite extreme of a few decades ago when parents tended to be more strict.” By giving kids a lot of praise, parents think they’re building their children’s confidence, when, in fact, it may be just the opposite. Too much praise can backfire and, when given in a way that’s insincere, make kids afraid to try new things or take a risk for fear of not being able to stay on top where their parents’ praise has put them.
Still, don’t go too far in the other direction. Not giving enough praise can be just as damaging as giving too much. Kids will feel like they’re not good enough or that you don’t care and, as a result, may see no point in trying hard for their accomplishments.
So what is the right amount of praise Experts say that the quality of praise is more important than the quantity. If praise is sincere and focused on the effort not the outcome, you can give it as often as your child does something that deserves a verbal reward. “We should especially recognize our children’s efforts to put themselves and work hard to achieve a goal,” says Donahue, author of Parenting Without Fear: Letting Go of Worry and Focusing on What Really Matters. “One thing to remember is that it’s the process not the end product that matters.”
Your son may not be the best basketball player on his team. But if he’s out there every day and playing hard, you should praise his effort regardless of whether his team wins or loses. Praising the effort and not the outcome can also mean recognizing your child when she has worked hard to clean the yard, cook dinner, or finish a book report. But whatever it is, praise should be given on a case-by-case basis and be proportionate (相称的) to the amount of effort your child has put into it.
8. What can be implied from Jenn Berman’s remarks
A. Parents praise their kids too much.
B. Going to the extremes is common for parents.
C. Parents should understand their kids better.
D. Confidence is significant for kids’ well being.
9. What does the underlined word “backfire” mean
A. Give support. B. Get undesired effect.
C. Put a fire under control. D. Become powerful.
10. As to giving children praise, which aspect will Donahue agree to
A. Praise your children as often as possible.
B. Never expect much of your children.
C. All children deserves a verbal reward.
D. Children’s effort outweighs the result.
11. How does the author develop the last paragraph
A. By answering a question. B. By giving examples.
B. By quoting. D. By making comparison.

How would you like it if you are able to go to your local park and pick some tomatoes, potatoes or even bananas for dinner. Sounds too good to be true, right For residents of Andernach, a German city, it’s not just a Utopian dream — it’s the reality. In 2010, Andernach began its “edible city” project, planting 101 varieties of tomatoes in public green spaces around the city centre. Its 30,000 residents are free to help themselves to whatever grows, as are any other visitors. Every year a new type of plant is introduced. In 2021, 100 types of beans were planted, while 2022 saw the introduction of 20 onion varieties. The town’s motto (座右铭) is, “Picking is encouraged — help yourself!”
It’s a community effort, as local citizens are encouraged to help plant and maintain the gardens. This offers an opportunity to socialize as well as to learn about planting, cultivating and harvesting food. “I often drop by to pick some herbs that I’m missing at home. Everything is easily accessible. There aren’t any fences. You just take what you need. The only thing is you have to be quick once the fruits are ripe or they’ll all be gone!” said a local historian.
Andernach may be the first, but it isn’t the only edible city. It’s part of the Edible Cities Network, an EU-funded project connecting green urban food initiatives around the world. Other edible cities include Carthage in Tunisia, Havana in Cuba and empeter-Vrtojba in Slovenia. In February 2022, the first Edible Cities Network Conference took place. Dr. Ina S umel, director of the Edible Cities Network, called it, “a unique opportunity to invite researchers and people involved of Edible City Solutions to the same table and unite theory with practice”.
Ultimately, the Edible Cities Network aims to create “greener, more edible and, above all, more livable cities”. It is a response to the pressures of climate change, and a cause for hope.
12. What is paragraph I mainly about
A. The development of a German city.
B. The popularity of Andernach’s city design.
C. Approaches of planting vegetables.
D. The green food project in Andernach.
13. How did the local historian feel about the project
A. Satisfied. B. Ignorant. C. Doubtful. D. Discouraged.
14. What can be inferred from paragraph 3
A. Edible cities hold meetings on a regular basis.
B. German rural areas will also follow the steps.
C. Asia will join the Edible Cities Network soon.
D. Green urban food is in the upward trend.
15. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. Start a green food campaign now B. Gain easy access to German food

第二节:读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
After leaving high school, I moved out of my family. With little work experience, I served as a waitress. But during the five years’ work, I found myself burning calories running about only for a tip.
I had had enough so I moved to a smaller town hoping to pursue a college degree. I promised I would show people I have brains as well and I could take more interesting jobs, like being a teacher. Luckily, I received a position as an after-school program tutor at a local middle school, with the added benefit of completing English education degree. I had the opportunity to go big! The kid would need me-a role model and a trustworthy friend, I believed.
But my first day was not as welcomed as thought. The desks were messy and the whole room as noisy as a local market. My excitement began to die down. The playground activity was deafening while homework time was not much better. I doubted whether the new job was a mistake. I tried to be patient until I noticed two kids quarreling in the corner.
I supposed it was another little incident among the teenagers. I went up, stood between the two. I gestured them to calm down but failed. Jeremy, the taller boy, still waved his fists (拳头).
My anger exploded. “Stop and get out!” I shouted at Jeremy.
Jeremy turned around, stared at me. “I don’t like you, homework and this after-school program! All you guys do is yell at me. I’m never coming back,” he shouted at the top of his voice. Everyone in the classroom froze. After a few seconds, he slammed and rushed out.
Naturally, I was so defeated. I wondered why I was here. What did being a teacher mean I paused to take a deep breath. Then suddenly I came to realize that I had never thought what it would take to be a good teacher or do jobs with my brains. Nor did I understand what these kids really need. Even worse, I lost my patience, shouted at the kids and I did the same as the students.
