英语阅读推理判断题练习
Passage 1
Mary had struggled to find the right words to convey her thoughts and feelings ever since she was a child. She was often told that she was “too quiet” or “too shy”, and as she grew older, she became increasingly self conscious about her inability to articulate herself. It wasn’t that she didn’t have anything to say—far from it. Mary’s mind was constantly racing with ideas and observations, but no matter how hard she tried, she just couldn’t seem to get the words out.
“Mary, I need to talk to you,” Mr. Thompson, the boss of Mary’s new company, said one day, with his voice serious. Mary’s heart sank. “Don’t worry,” Mr. Thompson said, noticing Mary’s panic. “It’s not that kind of conversation. I just wanted to talk to you about something that’s been on my mind lately.”
He paused for a moment, collecting his thoughts. “I’ve noticed that you’ve been struggling a bit lately. It seems like you’re having a tough time communicating with customers. I hear that you’re proficient at writing. So why not join our Advertising Department Besides, I have another suggestion…”
Mary kept nodding, unable to find the words to express her gratitude.
Following Mr. Thompson’s suggestion, Mary joined a writing competition. She had always been a talented writer, and she knew that she had the potential to create something truly special. So she set to work, pouring her heart and soul into her essay. The words started flowing, and Mary found herself writing with a new found sense of clarity and purpose.
The judges of the competition were amazed by Mary’s essay, and they selected her as the winner. Mary was thrilled, and she was grateful to have finally found the right way to do a good job.

Passage 2
At an age where many of his contemporaries are winding down, Jo Schoonbroodt is somehow speeding up. On Sunday, the 71 year old from the Netherlands, ran a marathon in 2hr 54min 19sec to become the fastest septuagenarian (70至79岁的人) in history.
A few days later, when the Times catches up with him, his achievement is still sinking in. “I only started jogging at 36 because my doctor told me I had high cholesterol(胆固醇),” he says. “But last year I ran 7,242 kilometres, which is more than double what I did in my car.”
But the secrets of his success might surprise you.“Most runners train too hard. I do a lot of my training with groups who run very slowly. And then I build on these basics with some faster interval training.”
Schoonbroodt often runs at 9 or 10 minute mile pace, far slower than the 6:38min miles he ran for 26.2 miles to set his world record, but he says the crucial thing is that he listens to his body. “A lot of people follow a training plan or coach and push on even when their body is saying: ‘No, this is not a good day to do it.’ But if you go out the door and just do what you feel, it’s easier to keep running and stay injury free.”
Being a late bloomer(大器晚成), he believes, has actually helped him because his ego(自我意识) never had to worry about chasing faster times of his youth. “Because I started so late, I missed my best years. But that’s no problem. Everything is still new to me.”
Schoonbroodt, meanwhile, has no plans to put his feet up. “My next marathon is in two and a half weeks, on an old Roman road built 2,000 years ago,” he says with excitement. It will be his fifth in 2024. And with that he is off. After all, the quest(追求) for another sub three hour marathon waits for no man. Not even one who is 71.

Passage 3
“How beautiful the jasmine(茉莉花) is! A sweet smell covers the budding twigs. So fragrant, so white, admired by all lips.” The famed Chinese folk song Jasmine Flower has reached a global audience with its beautiful melody and lyrics. Equally popular is the traditionally made jasmine tea, whose elegant fragrance and mellow taste fascinate countless tea drinkers.
Chen Chengzhong has a big say in the production of jasmine tea as he is a practitioner of Fuzhou jasmine tea scenting techniques. The 72 year old tea maker started his career early in his teenage years, when he became an apprentice in a state owned tea factory.
Jasmine tea is a kind of tea scented(带有某种香味) with the fragrance of jasmine blossoms and typically has green tea as its base. The natural scenting process consumes fresh jasmine blossoms, picked during the daytime when the buds are closed, Chen said. And the green tea leaves from the spring harvest are stored until the most fragrant jasmine blossoms in late summer.
The hot and humid climate and the red soil in East China’s Fujian province provide favourable conditions for jasmine and tea plants to thrive, becoming the high quality ingredients that are needed for jasmine tea. “Our jasmine flowers and tea leaves are all sourced from Fujian in large quantities, despite the fact that they are pricier than those from other origins,” Chen said.
When the fresh jasmine flowers are harvested, they are mixed with layers of tea leaves. Workers stir(搅拌) the tea leaves and flowers overnight, allowing the leaves to absorb the fragrant scent of the jasmine blossoms.
In the morning, the flowers are sorted, the leaves are dried, and the process is repeated. More repetition makes for a more robust jasmine flavour, and it takes at least nine scenting processes to produce jasmine tea of a superb grade.
Having been appointed as the representative practitioner of Fuzhou jasmine tea scenting techniques, Chen now focuses more on passing on the scenting techniques, giving lectures to students and apprentices. Chen’s son Chen Zheng is motivated to follow in his father’s footsteps and move forward with the scenting techniques. “Like my father, I also hope to practice this traditional skill that has profound cultural deposits, and pass it on,” Chen Zheng said.

Passage 4
Researcher Ruijia Hu said wildlife habitat in crowded places like southwest Ohio is becoming increasingly fragmented(分散) as forests give way to new construction. Eventually, this could make trouble to an animal with specific habitat needs like Ohio’s pileated(红冠) woodpecker.
Pileated woodpeckers have the nickname carpenter birds for their never ending natural woodworking. They peck out holes in trees for their nests every year, creating lots of valuable homes for animals like fox squirrels and owls. “They make new nests every year. They won’t reuse old ones,” Hu said. “Other animals depend on them.”
Pileated woodpeckers are private birds that are more often heard than seen. Studying them can be especially difficult. So Hu turned to citizen science for help. To identify where woodpeckers have been seen, she used eight years of sightings collected by birders and logged in to the website eBird, a free online tool and app that anyone can use to record their observations and locations. She overlaid these sightings with remote sensing data and found that corridors along rivers and creeks with abundant mature trees and deadwood helped the birds adjust to their increasingly fragmented urban landscape.
“With fragmented forests, many habitats that were once suitable for wildlife are broken up,” Hu said. “Wildlife is unable to find habitat big enough to meet their survival needs. And even if there are suitable habitats, the distance between them can be too great. Wildlife corridors link up these habitat patches. Since wildlife can travel and migrate from one patch to another, the probability of finding food and shelter is higher.”
“There are so many species in urban areas that we don’t pay attention to, especially those who are not considered vulnerable,” Hu said. “With development chipping away at more forest in this crowded county, the tipping point(临界点) could come quickly and unexpectedly. You can’t fix it overnight. It’s not just about planting more trees. The birds need mature forest, so it could take 30 to 50 years to replace their habitat. At least we can protect these riverside forest corridors and see that existing trees reach maturity.”
