It’s easy to spend hours here, settled on a comfortable seat and enjoying a pot of tea or coffee while looking through inspiring book titles.
BOOKSHOP BY THE BLACKDOWNS
Bookshop by the Blackdowns opened last December in Wellington and is a family run affair. Very much a community bookshop and space for people to share a love of reading, they sell new publications, classics and old favourites. As well as pre schoolers’ picture books and children’s books, the shop also has a good line in young adult fiction. Ever changing Reading Lists highlight their hand picked books. They also host author events, with visits by Emma Carroll and Hazel Prior in recent months.
BAILEY HILL BOOKSHOP
Located in Castle Cary, Bailey Hill Bookshop has been running for more than 50 years, with its current owners taking over in 2003, and its success lies in providing expert knowledge, selling books from national and international, but also independent publishers, and having an impressively fast delivery service for any books that need to be ordered. It has special events too, including a talk at the town’s Market House on October 21 by Rebecca Lowe.
ROTHWELL DUNWORTH
If you enjoy searching through old books and uncovering hard to get or long forgotten treasures, then pay a visit to Rothwell Dunworth in Dulverton. Founded in 1975, it specializes in antiquarians(收集古物者) and second hand books. It has sections covering all areas of interest including art, history, travel and literature. Tours come in many creative forms, such as guided walking tours, self guided walking tours, coastal walks and bush walks.
Guided Walking Tours
Guided walking tours are an informative and fun way to deeply understand the area about a city’s history and the people there. You can take this kind of tour anytime and anywhere. Guided walking tours come with a guide with the knowledge and history of the area and they can help you with a lot of the history that happened in the area. Guided walking tours are better at showing sites in depth.
Self Guided Walking Tours
Self guided walking tours are good if you wish to do things at your own pace. With self guided walking tours, you usually have a brochure on the area that you follow and it will tell you about local people’s favourite landmarks. Self guided walking tours are suitable for individuals or close friends. You can take them in any season you like.
Coastal Walking Tours
Coastal walks are ideal for those who enjoy breathtaking views. Coastal walks will often take you inland for part of your journey, only to rejoin the coastline at some other spectacular views mother nature has provided. Coastal walks are for all year round. I have done some great walks in winter and seen mother nature at her best, and the best part about doing tours during winter is that there are not very many people that will almost have the tour to themselves.
Bush Walking Tours
Bush walks, according to research, can help reduce depression and raise self esteem. Bush walks can be a family activity with your dog throughout the year. Some bush walks may take more than one day. Whenever you want to take a bush walk, you should keep in mind that all bush walks should be researched thoroughly as you may need special equipment like waterproof trousers. At the very least you should let your family or friends know where you are going. This is useful if you get lost.
Hope you can find the most suitable tour for yourself.

Passage 4
When travelling on the railway, I always arrive early to take photos or films of trains on my phone. I do it for my teenage boys. I’ll text these images to them, and they’ll text back saying “great pics”, and occasionally get very excited if I’ve captured a rare engine.
My older one, Solomon, now 17, had an early and strong interest in trains. By the age of two, he had identified his favourite train of all the Class 465, a four car electric multiple unit. One day, passing the railway station, he started laughing with pleasure. A train was waiting at the far platform. It looked like a Class 465 to me by its shape and size, but Solomon noticed it had five cars instead of four and most importantly, the first three digits of its number were 376. It excited him that he had discovered not only a new train but a new set of numbers, too. Classes 465 and 376 are common, but each train has its own unique number. That is part of the appeal, specifics and detail.
My younger boy, Valentine, 15, came to trains through a different route: new technology. I was walking past our local station when I saw something special. A new train I’d never seen before. If such a train could exist in my run down local station, anything was possible. Science fiction just became the science fact. I had just seen the Class 395, the Javelin, Britain’s fastest train. A few months later, there would be one leaving our station every half hour to London.
Valentine adored the Javelin. Trips became fraught because both boys wanted to travel on their favourite train—the Class 465 versus the Javelin. We negotiated with them—we’d take the Class 465 on the way there, the Javelin back home. Everyone was happy.
My husband is also a railfan. Having the boys has allowed him to pursue his passion. Trains are our shared passion, a timeless source of pleasure.
