Steve, 21, was leading a small team into an abandoned(废弃的)mine near Paradise Pines, California. With him were his 19-year-old brother Allen, and a fishing friend, 32-year-old Bobby Erler.
After a couple of hours of exploring, Steve suddenly felt the earth give way under him. The drainage shaft(排水井)! His fingers clawed helplessly at the wet soil as he fell. He was falling into darkness, his body struggling against the walls of the shaft.
20 feet away, Allen heard a loud cry. “I’m climbing down,” he told Bobby.
With his torch(手电筒)under his arm, Allen slid rapidly down the pipe. “I’m coming, Steve!” he yelled several times. No answer.
As Allen slid towards the bottom of the mine shaft, he saw Steve floating face down in the water. He slipped his arms round Steve and patted him on the back. Water came out of Steve’s mouth continuously.
“I’m going to die, right ” Steve said in a weak voice.
“No way,” Allen said. “Bobby’s going for help.”
At 3: 20 pm, Bobby stepped through the door of the local fire station, a mile and a half from the top of the canyon(峡谷).“My friends. Trapped,” he said, out of breath. “Last Chance Mine. You have to hurry!”
One hundred miles away, Bob Trussell’s phone rang at 5 pm. Leader of the Lassen County Search and Rescue Team, Trussell, 44, had the only team in northern California trained to lead mine rescues. “I’ll pull together my team,” he said, “but it’ll take some time to get there.” An hour later, he was leading a line of six trucks towards Paradise Pines.

As the final exam drew near, I was trying to do some revision for an important oral exam in the local library. However, people kept disturbing me, and I was getting more and more annoyed. Of course, the more upset I got, the less I was able to concentrate. The last straw was when I heard someone behind me. The singing was so loud that I could even recognize the song! I turned around and glared at the person who was singing. It was a tall girl about the same age as me and she had a big smile on her face. She was standing with a book in her hands near the “English Literature” section. She looked like a literary type and seemed very interested in what she was reading. I glanced at the book’s cover. It was a book of Tennyson’s poems.
The fact that she looked like a sensitive, friendly girl didn’t matter. If anything, it made me even angrily. In fact, I’m surprised there wasn’t steam coming out of my ears!
I picked up my books, glared at her and whispered angrily, “Thanks to your noise. I’ve been unable to study. You’re so selfish!” Then I stormed out of the library with anger. Because I left the library in such a hurry, I left my most important textbook behind. It was only when I got home two hours later that I realized I’d forgotten it and there was nothing I could do as the library was closed. I was so upset that I almost cried.

That started affecting her academic performance and overall happiness. She said to herself, “I’m a loser. I can’t get anything done.” She felt worried and tried to find solutions. However, unfortunately, all she had done was in vain.
One day, Emily’s teacher, Ms. Johnson, noticed her attitude and decided to help her regain her confidence. She said to Emily, “No one is born confident and strong. You have to make a change, so take the first step forward.” She encouraged Emily to participate in classroom activities and group projects. Mr. Smith, my 10-grade English teacher, was one of the teachers who I would never forget and the story between Mr. Smith and me was the most amazing one I wanted to share.
When I was young at school, I loved talking, which was not always appreciated by Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith was a teacher whom no one liked because he was too strict. He stood about 5.5 feet, was very thin and wore his hair pulled back in a way that gave him a horsey (像马的) look. Whenever he got upset, he would lower his head and look at you over the top of his glasses.
One day in his class I was busy talking. I didn’t realize he had stopped teaching, staring straight at me. “Tom, I would like to see you after school.”
Later, Mr. Smith explained in a low, but very firm voice that showed he expected me to listen when he was talking. For punishment he told me to write a1000-word essay (文章) on education and its effect on the society. He wanted it in by the following Wednesday.
Well, I met my deadline (最后期限). I was confident. It was a good paper. And I expected a sign of praise from him. The next day in class, however, he was looking at me over his glasses. He called me forward and returned my paper. “Go back and rewrite,” he said. “Remember, each paragraph is supported to begin with a topic sentence.” When he gave my paper back a second time, he corrected the grammar. The third time, the spelling. The fourth time, it was punctuation. The fifth, it wasn’t neat (整洁的) enough. I was sick!
The sixth time, I rewrote the whole paper slowly in ink, leaving enough space. When he saw the paper, he removed his glasses, and accepted it with a smile. After that, I put the whole thing out of my mind.

“Walk faster!” Brandon shouted annoyingly to his camping partner, Tim. Tim struggled to keep pace with Brandon, who was metres in front of him. The scout (童子军) teacher, Mr. Tan, had paired both of them up together for that week’s camp adventure. Tim was excited to have an experienced camper while his partner, Brandon, on the other hand, felt that Tim was just a newbie who knew nothing.
Brandon was indeed an excellent scout who took to the various skills taught like a duck to water. However, in class, his attitude was beyond terrible. He was rude to his teachers and seldom handed in his homework on time. During his co-curricular (辅助课程) activity, the Scouts, his work was much better. However, his attitude remained the same. Brandon always treated his fellow scouts as if they were good-for-nothings. Thinking that he was better than the others, he always acted rudely in front of them. Tim, who just joined the Scouts, received the same treatment.
“Hey, Brandon! Please wait for me!” Tim begged. Rolling his eyes, Brandon stood on the rock with his arms folded, laughing at the attempts of his partner to cross the rock below him. Brandon soon realized that Tim wasn’t going to make it alone. With all his might, Brandon pulled Tim up and continued on his tracks. Tim felt a sense of gratitude towards Brandon’s action. Quickening his footsteps, he caught up with Brandon and both of them headed for the campsite that Mr. Tan had assigned to each group.
The sky grew darker and nighttime came closer. The path ahead of them grew unclear. Suddenly, Brandon slipped on a rock and fell down into some deep undergrowth (灌木丛) of the forest after managing a loud cry. Hearing that, Tim turned around only to realize that Brandon was deep in the undergrowth. Brandon landed with a huge impact that led to an intense pain in his kneecap. He realized that he had broken his knee.

Suddenly Allen saw something shining above them. It was the light from a headlamp! The rescue team had arrived. Allen quickly signaled with his own torch, trying to pinpoint their exact location. A few minutes later, the team found them. Trussell and his team placed Steve on a backboard and stretcher and slowly lifted him up the shaft. Allen followed closely behind. It was a difficult ascent, but they eventually made it to the top.
Steve was rushed to the hospital at once. The doctors discovered that he had a fractured arm and poor physical condition. They also found that he had contracted a severe illness after being submerged in the cold water for so long. It was a close call, but Steve was going to be okay. Though shaken up by the experience, Steve and Allen were grateful for the quick response of the rescue team. Just then, the phone rang, and I answered it. And a gentle voice introduced the speaker as Jenny and asked if I was Jane. After confirming that I was, Jenny said that she had noticed I’d left my book in the library and as my name was in it, she’d asked a librarian to get my phone number from their files. She said that she didn’t live far away and could bring it around for me if I needed it.
I sighed with relief and agreed to meet her at the convenience store down the road. The moment I saw Jenny, I was shocked as if rooted to the spot/my jaw dropped to the ground. Just as you could guess, she was the girl I had shouted at for singing. I was filled with shame and apologized several times for my rude behavior. I felt so guilty, but Jenny just laughed and forgave me, relieving my embarrassment in a gentle voice. Hearing her considerate words, I nodded firmly, knowing kindness and friendship bloom in both of our hearts. Till now, she has been my best friend I can trust and count on.

I am glad to tell you that Tom has won first prize with the title ‘Education and Its Effect on the Society’.” Then cheers of praise rocked the whole classroom. Years later, I told many people that story, and my comments, including my unfriendly description of Mr. Smith’s appearance. Unexpectedly, Mr. Smith wrote to me, and said his look wasn’t important. “Are you alright ” Tim asked in concern, looking carefully over the edge of the hillside. Brandon only managed to reply with a painful cry. Reassured that Brandon was conscious, Tim started screaming for help. Thankfully, both of them were near the campsite. The consistent screaming and shouting from Tim attracted the attention of Mr. Tan and the fellow scouts. When all of them arrived, they took out the ropes used for securing the tents and started tying them together, forming a rope long enough to reach Brandon.
Pulling together, it was not long before an injured and relieved Brandon appeared at the top of the hillside. The scouts cheered and gave one another congratulatory high-fives. Brandon thanked everyone for their rescue gratefully. He even smiled weakly at Tim before being taken to the hospital. After that incident, Brandon was a totally changed boy. He understood the importance of teamwork and no longer rejected the idea of working and helping his friends. He changed his attitude dramatically and was even asked to become the leader of the scouts.
