Movie stars might think their lives are private after leaving the acting location, but they ought to know that they have much power over their audience. The power gives them an ability to change people, events, even history, making them to have the responsibility of being good role models.
With time going on, movie stars become celebrities (名人) and in the process get a large number of fans. Some of them follow their deeds, dress, and act like them. In reality, they want to be like their favorite movie stars. If a movie star engages in acts that the society does not approve, those who look up to them, especially the teens, will do the same. Movie stars should be responsible for what they do and say as following the actions is now simpler because of social media. It is important to behave like a role model even when they think no one is watching.
Nobody is perfect, and movie stars also have had their down moments. They may not have been good role models at the time, but they can change the narrative by doing the right things. They can also turn the past shortcomings into positives by opening up about problems and how they overcame the challenges. And their audience can learn to discuss their problems and seek help.
People starring in movies are the target of companies to promote their products or services for a fee. Their celebrity status is a reason enough to think beyond the payment. A movie star should not recommend something that will influence the way teens live negatively. It would be wrong to promote something like sweetened drinks or foods without health benefits. Movie stars face problems like other people, but because of their influence, they have a responsibility to be role models in the public eye.
24. What is the second paragraph mainly about
A Fans often follow their stars’ dress and hobbies.
B Celebrities’ actions spread fast on social media.
C. Movie stars should be responsible for their fans.
D. Movie stars’ acts have a great impact on their fans.
25. How should movie stars deal with their down moments
A. Lie to fans by making up a story.
B. Do the right things to overcome the problems.
C. Cover their problems with good movies.
D. Post their problems online to seek help.
26. Which is the author’s advice to celebrities
A. Don’t tell problems to the public.
B. Don’t play roles that have a negative impact on teens.
C. Don’t ask for payment when promoting products.
D. Don’t recommend unhealthy drinks or foods.
27. What is the author’s purpose of writing this article
A. To tell movie stars how to help people in need.
B. To stress movie stars’ impact on teens.
C. To call on movie stars to be good role models.
D. To advise movie stars to open up about their problems.

Humans aren’t the only animals that move to music. Parrots have been known to do it. And now rats have been observed bopping their heads in time with the tunes of Mozart, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson and others, according to a new study from the University of Tokyo. What’s more, the rats seems to respond to the same beats that get humans’ feet tapping (轻跺).
The researchers played a sonata by Mozart for lab rats at different variations (变更) of the original speed: 75%, 100%, 200% and 400%. Wireless sensors on the rats’ bodies tracked their movements. Meanwhile, 20 human participants were involved and listened to the same music through motion sensor-equipped headphones.
It was observed that the rats’ head movements were the most obvious when the music played at its normal speed, which was around 132 bpm (beats per minute). The same was true for human participants. The researchers then changed to some pop songs such as Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” and Michael Jackson’s “Beat It”. As with Mozart’s, rats moved their heads along the rhythm of pop songs, similar to how people do, at about 120 to 140 bpm.
The study showed that both rats and humans moved their heads along to the beat in a similar rhythm. The level of head bopping from both humans and rats decreased as the music sped up. The study suggests that there is something similar about the way human and rat brains respond to rhythm, but rats do not match their motions to the beat like humans do. Humans can predict the timing of a beat and move predictably to it.
Aniruddh Patel, a psychologist who studies brain response to music, says humans and parrots respond to beats with big, voluntary movements such as head shaking, dancing or foot tapping. Patel also stresses that this study does not show that rats have the same emotional associations with music as humans do. Yet he believes it could help reveal how humans and some other animals evolved a sense of rhythm.
28. What does the underlined word “bopping” in the first paragraph mean
A. Moving. B. Responding to. C. Nodding. D. Reacting.
29. How do rats differ from humans in response to music
A. They seem more interested in pop music. B. They make similar movements to different rhythms.
C They prefer moving their heads with the beat. D. They are unable to predict the beat of music.
30. What is Patel’s attitude towards the study
A. Uncaring. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Disapproving.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. Music affects rats’ brains. B. Humans are the only animals that move to music.
C. Music is attractive to rats. D. Rats may respond to music like human do.

When someone tells me that they’re going to spend just 3 days in Paris, I feel like they’re most likely not going to love it. I mean, it’s possible to have a great time if you do it right and put what you want to see at the first place. During such a short visit most tourists head to see the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Louvre and some other tourist attractions, and therefore experience crowds, long lines and not the real local Paris.
Take your pick and spend some time actually enjoying these things instead of rushing through everything. I’m not telling you not to see these famous landmarks, but in order to fully feel the Paris atmosphere, you need to stay in the city longer. A stay in Paris just for a weekend seems far from seeing all the great things.
Almost everyone is dreaming of getting to the top of the Eiffel Tower. But the moment you start approaching the tower you might realize that it’s not very romantic, as it’s surrounded by a ton of visitors and annoying vendors (小贩). The place is crowded, and lines take forever no matter when you visit it.
It’s hard to find a romantic spot unless you book a dinner on top of the Eiffel Tower. It’s something you will only do once, as it’s not the best fine dining you’ve ever had — you’re doing it just for the experience. However, if you climb the stairs behind the Croatian Embassy you may be able to find a quiet spot overlooking the tower. The view is wonderful and definitely worth it, especially at night when the tower starts blinking!
I recommend you to see the city from up high from the top of the Tour Montparnasse, Arc de Triomphe, or even a carousel (旋转木马) in Tuileries, and actually have the Eiffel Tower in your view.
32. What can be inferred from the first paragraph
A. You can only see crowds at tourist attractions.
B. He who has a short visit doesn’t love Paris.
C. Visitor can have a good time traveling in Paris in three days.
D. It takes more time to experience the real Paris.
33. What is TRUE about visiting Paris according to the author
A. Fully feeling the atmosphere of the city.
B. Only visiting the famous landmarks of the city.
C. Seeing the whole city at the weekend.
D. Rushing through all attractions in the city.
34. How does a tourist usually feel after visiting the Eiffel Tower
A. Delighted. B. Sad. C. Exhausted. D. Romantic.
35. Which can be the best title for the passage
A. The atmosphere of Paris.
B. The tips of visiting Paris better.
C. The view of the Eiffel Tower.
D. The tourist attractions in Paris.

I wanted to take a closer look so I asked Keegan if I could hold it in my hands. He graciously agreed. Knowing how easily broken the aeroplane was, I carefully removed it from the display cabinet. Just as I was putting it back, I sneezed. "Snap!"One of the wings of the model aeroplane broke in my hands.
When Keegan saw this, tears welled up in his eyes. Soon, tears started to roll down his cheeks uncontrollably. With my head hung low, I rushed out of his house as I did not know how to comfort him.

When the day is dawning, the Center of Naxi Dongba Pictographs and Paintings of the old town Liliang welcomes his owner, He Runyuan, who is dressed in a traditional Naxi clothing. Every day, He explains Dongba culture to tourists and teaches them to write Dongba characters. “Dongba characters are not only the soul of Dongba culture, but also a treasure for the whole world, ”said He. Enjoying a history of over 1, 000 years, Dongba characters are an ancient system of pictographic glyphs (象形字形). They are praised to be the "living fossil(活化石)"in writing.
As a member of the Naxi group, He first learned Dongba characters at the age of 13. He loved them immediately when he first looked at the symbols. “These characters have pictographic drawings that look like humans, animals, plants etc, ”He said. “They are usually colorful and recognizable. ”
Though the characters are interesting, learning them is never easy. Dongba culture is always mastered by Dongbas, the Naxi priests(祭司). Without Dongbas in his village, He has to travel far to the Old Town, where many Dongbas are gathered. “In most cases, I need to walk for more than one day to the destination. To get more learning time, I always set off very early when the city is still in darkness, ”said He.
But the love for Dongba culture keeps him going. For the past 30 years, He has been studying these characters every day. In 2016, He set up the Center of Naxi Dongba Pictographs and Paintings Where He beautified fans, glasses and even T-shirts with Dongba characters, hoping to pass down Dongba culture and let more people know about it.

In 1986, when he was only a prince. King Charles told a television interviewer that it was important to talk to plants. He was widely laughed at. But his wisdom seems to have been ahead of its time, for there is now plenty of evidence that plants can detect(察觉)sound, react to it, and even perhaps produce it.
Scientists have been experimenting with playing sounds to plants since at least the 1960s, during which time they have been exposed to everything from Beethoven to Michael Jackson. Over the years, evidence that this sort of thing can have an effect has been growing. One paper, published in 2018, announced that an Asian plant grew much larger leaves when exposed to 56 days of Buddhist chants—but not if it was exposed to Western pop music, or silence. Another, published last year, found that plants exposed to the noise of traffic from a busy motorway suffered slow growth, and produced a range of stress compounds(成分).
Another research reports that certain frequencies(频率), played in some environments like greenhouses, can affect seed growth and even improve crop production. And plants can make noises, too. Earlier this year a group of researchers at Tel Aviv University published an article in Cell Press, reporting that several plants gave out different noises in response to different stresses—although not at the sorts of frequencies that humans can hear. Humans can only hear frequencies of up to 16 kilohertz. Scientists discovered sounds given out by plants were up to 250 kilohertz.
If all that sounds strange, perhaps it should not. After all, sound carries useful information.
From an evolutionary point of view, there is no reason to expect that information to be applied only by animals.
12. What was most people's attitude to Charles' opinion
A. Unclear. B. Positive. C. Cautious. D. Negative.
13. What can we learn from paragraph 2
A. Different sounds have different effects on plants.
B. Buddhist chants don't make a difference to plants.
C. Western pop music does good to plants' growth.
D. The noise of traffic produces stress compounds.
14. Why can't humans hear sounds given out by plants
A. The sounds are strange. B. The plants grow in greenhouses.
C. The plants are under great stress. D. The sounds are at high frequencies.
15. What's the main idea of the text
A. It's the important to talk to plants.
B. Sounds make a difference to plants.

If you can’t trust an expert to make a good prediction, who can you trust
Try a crowd. Under the right conditions, crowds can make better predictions than the individuals in them-a crowd can even beat a single expert.
More than a hundred years ago, the scientist Francis Galton visited an English country Faithere, he came across a contest to guess the weight of an ox. Interested in mathematics, Galton gathered 800 guesses and dealt with the numbers. To his surprise, Galton found that the crowd’s guess (the average) was just 1 pound different from the ox’s real weight. Did Galton happen to collect a lot lucky guesses
David Kestenbaumand Jacob Goldstein, a pair of reporters, wanted to find out. One steamy summer day in 2015, they visited the “Burlington County Farm Fair” in New Jersey. There, Penelope, a black and white cow, shining with good health, greeted them. She was as tall as Goldstein’s shoulder. The reporters led the cow onto a large, flat truck scale (秤). A curious crowd had gathered, but Kestenbaum and Goldstein carefully guarded the scale’s digital display (数字显示), It flashed 1, 355 pounds.
Later, far from the sweet smell of warm hay, the reporters uploaded a photo of Penelope to the Planet Money website. They invited people to guess her weight, and more than 17, 000 people did. The crowd’s guess was 1, 287 pounds. That was just 5 percent less than Penelope’s true weight. Impressive!
Among the crowd, some called themselves cow experts, while others probably couldn’t tell a cot from an ox. When Goldstein and Kestenbaum calculated the guesses only from the experts, the result wasn’t any better. In fact, it was even worse:83 pounds off for the experts compared to 68 pounds for the whole crowd.
Crowds aren’t just lucky. Lots of people with different bits of information and ideas can make crowds collectively smart. A crowd will always make a prediction at least as good as the typical person in it. Often a crowd will do better. If people in a crowd have reasonably good information, they can make excellent predictions. Some businesses, financial markets, and Internet searches rely on this phenomenon (现象).
If you want to predict who’s going to win the big game on Saturday or when school buses will fly, ask a crowd of reasonably knowledgeable people instead of a single expert. Just make sure the crowd has people who know different things and have different ways of thinking. Without a diverse crowd, predictions can go badly.
8.Why is the example of Francis Galton mentioned in the passage
A.To explain why crowds can’t make an accurate prediction.
B.To state Francis Galton happened to collect many lucky guesses.
C.To show how to predict an ox’s weight.
D.To prove crowds can make a better prediction.
9.How did the reporters prove the advantage of prediction made by crowds over experts
A.By conducting a series of research. B.By explaining the theories involved.
C.By making comparisons. D.By doing experiments.
10.Who may give a better prediction according to the passage
A.An expert who has a different way of thinking from others.
B.A crowd of people with different backgrounds and knowledge.
C.A single expert who is knowledgeable.
D.A crowd of experts who have the same way of thinking.
11.What can we learn from this passage
A.Two heads are better than one.
B.You never know what you can do till you try.
C.Practice is the sole criterion for testing truth.
D.Seek the truth from facts.

Although-London’s red telephone boxes may not get as much use these days, they are one of the city’s most recognizable features-but some could soon have a new purpose.
Recently, a developer wants to turn two run-down telephone boxes on Coventry Street in London’s West End into vending machines(自动售货机) that will operate 24/7. These telephone boxes will be filled with snacks for sale.
Application for this interesting redevelopment has been submitted by Nuriyeh Popalzi as part of the Young Entrepreneur Support Scheme (VESS), with plans currently in the consulting stage. If successful, this would mean the boxes on Coventry Street, which have sadly been subject to disrepair, get a fresh red lick(一点) of paint and have their doors removed to create the machines.
In her application, Nuriyeh Popalzi said, “Both telephone boxes are out of service and kept in poor condition of maintenance, creating an unpleasant site in one of the most historic and touristic parts of London, “she added. “These red telephone boxes are considered a key part of London not only for the Londoners but also for the tourists from all over the world. For decades, these red telephone boxes have been a symbol of London and in fact a symbol for the whole of Great Britain. ”
Popalzi believes the transformed boxes will have a positive effect on the community, much like other telephone boxes that have been turned into libraries. All profits made by the machines will go to charity, meaning happiness can be spread in multiple ways.
Before long some Londoners’ next afternoon pick-me-up could come from one of London’s iconic red boxes. However, there should be a speed dial(快速拨号) option-we know Londoners are always in a rush, after all.
12.What may be the future use of the two red telephone boxes
A.To sell snacks. B.To raise money.
C.To store snacks. D.To serve as libraries.

I ask every student I interview for admission to my institution, Pitzer College, the same question, “What do you look forward to the most in college ” I was stunned and delighted recently when a student sat across from me and replied, “I look forward to the possibility of failure.” Of course, this is not how most students respond to the question when sitting before the person who can make decisions about their academic futures, but this young man took a risk. “You see, my parents have never let me fail,” he said. “When I want to take a chance at something, they remind me it’s not a safe route to take. Taking a more rigorous course or trying an activity I may not succeed in, they tell me, will ruin my chances at college admission. Even the sacrifice of staying up late to do something unrelated to school, they see it as a risk to my academic work and college success.”
Kids all over the world admit they are under tremendous pressure to be perfect. So students are usually in shock when I chuckle and tell them I never expect perfection. How could a dean of admission at one of America’s most selective institutions not want the best and the brightest The reality is (that) perfection doesn’t exist.
I’ve spent enough time in high schools to know teenagers will never be perfect. They do silly things, mess up, fall down, and lack confidence. The ability to bounce back is a fundamental life skill students have to learn on their own. The lessons of failure can’t be taught in a classroom; they are experienced and reflected upon. During my weekend of interviews, another student told me, “I’m ashamed to admit I failed precalculus, but I decided to take it again and got a B-plus. I’m now taking calculus, and even though I don’t love it, I’m glad I pushed through!” I asked him what he learned from the experience. “I learned to let go of shame,” he said. “I realized that I can’t let a grade define my success. I also learned that if you want anything bad enough, you can achieve it.”
I smiled as I wrote his words down on the application-review form. This kid will thrive on my campus. Not only will the faculty love him, but he has the coping skills he needs to adjust to the rigors of life in a residential college setting. Failure is about growth, learning, overcoming, and moving on. Let’s allow young people to fail. Not only will they learn something, it might even get them into college.

A. fun B. lively C. strict D. special

B. Parents define their children’s success by grades.
C. Teenagers get lessons of failure through experiences.
D. Young people spend enough time letting go of shame.
6. Why did the author smile as he wrote the student’s words down on the application-review form
A. Because the college teachers would love the student for his perfection.
B. Because he succeeded in persuading the student into the college.
C. Because the student realized his dream of being a perfect person.
D. Because he thought the student would have a promising future.
7. What would be the best title for the passage
A. Learn to Fail B. Live to Learn
C. Try to Succeed D. Decide to Experience

The English language arrived in South Asia as a result of colonization (殖民).
The British first arrived in India in the early 1600s and soon established trading posts in a number of cities under the control of The East India Company. By 1765 the company’s influence had grown to such a degree that the British were effectively controlling most parts of the country. This date is often taken as the start of what is referred to as The Raj — a period of British rule in India that lasted until Independence in 1947.
At first, there were no official attempts to force the language on the masses. But by the 1700s, English had firmly established itself as the language of administration (行政) and many educated Indians were demanding instruction in English as a means of social advancement. By 1857 universities had opened in Bombay, Calcutta and Madras. English was increasingly accepted as the language of government, of the social elite (精英), and of the national press.
After Independence, India became a nation state, and it was intended that English would be phased out as the language of administration. But there was no simple solution as to which language should replace it. At first Hindi, the most widely spoken language, seemed to be the obvious choice, but since protests in 1963 in the state of Tamil Nadu against Hindi as a national language, opinion has remained divided. In a country with over 1. 3 billion people and more than a thousand languages, it is difficult to choose a single national language, as mother tongue speakers of that language would benefit more from it.
Despite continued pressure from nationalists, English remains at the heart of Indian society. It is widely used in the media, in higher education and government and therefore remains a common means of communication, both among the ruling classes, and between speakers who do not understand each other’s languages.

C. Unsupportive. D. Friendly.

When I was 10, I was always joked by my fellow Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) mates, including John. Words were like, “Dick is the best player in the CCA! He only knows how to play 'Mary had a Little Lamb' on the trumpet (小号) !”
Once, the moment I left the school, I took out my earpiece, listening to recordings like a broken recorder. I got so concentrated that I didn't see the wall in front and fell on the ground. Luckily for me, a passer-by saw what had happened and immediately called the ambulance. When I woke up in the hospital, however, the nurse told me that I suffered severe leg injuries. I could have stopped practicing but that was not what I wanted. I wanted to practice even in the hospital. “One leg injury would not stop me; it would only make me feel more motivated,” I replied to the nurse.
That was a hard period of my life. If I had not been careless, I would not have this problem. Yet if I haven't gotten myself into this problem, I would not be as motivated and would not have that experience teaching me a life lesson. My parents and my best friend had come to give me emotional support, telling me what had happened during CCA today and advising me on how to become a better player. After day-and-night hard practice, I finally perfected and went back to my CCA.
On the selection day, the conductor praised me and asked how I had improved so much. I explained that it was because of my determination, my family and my friends. The conductor then said that I was a role model and that the whole band should follow my motivation and practice instead of being like John.
This experience made me what I am today. Currently, I am the best player and the head of the secondary school military band.

Human and their inventions, such as cars or plastic, have caused most environmental pollution on Earth. Today car emissions (排放物) are a major source of air pollution leading to climate change. In the meanwhile, plastics fill our ocean, creating a significant health issue to marine (海洋的) animals.
And what about the electric light, which is thought to be one of the greatest human inventions of all time Electric light can be a beautiful thing, guiding us home when the sun goes down, keeping us safe and making our homes bright. However, like CO2 emissions and plastic, too much of a good thing has started to influence the environment. Light pollution, the wrong use of outdoor light, is affecting human health, wildlife behavior and our ability to observe stars.
Light pollution is a global issue. This became obvious when the World Atlas of Artificial Night Sky Brightness, a computer-created map based on thousands of satellite photos, was published in 2016, which can be viewed online. The map shows how and where our globe is lit up at night. Vast areas of North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia are glowing (发光) with light, while only the most distant regions on Earth (Greenland, Central African Republic and Niue) are in total darkness. Some of the most light-polluted countries in the world are Singapore, Qatar, and Kuwait.
Sky glow is the brightening of the night sky, mostly over cities, due to the electric lights of cars, streetlamps, offices, factories, outdoor advertising, and buildings, turning night into day for people who work and play long after sunset.
People living in cities with high levels of sky glow have a hard time seeing more than a handful of stars at night. Astronomers (宇航员) are particularly concerned with sky glow pollution as it reduces their ability to view stars.
Mostly over 80 percent of the world's population, and 99 percent of Americans and Europeans live under sky glow.
8.What can we learn from paragraph 2
A.Electric light should be not be used outdoors. B.Electric light is the main factor to keep us safe.
C.Electric light has both advantages and disadvantages. D.Electric light is the greatest human invention.
9.Which of the following places is least affected by sky glow
A.Niue. B.Singapore. C.Kuwait. D.Qatar.
10.What activity in real life may cause light pollution
A.Keeping the streetlamps on. B.Littering plastics about.
C.Driving cars around. D.Overfishing marine animals.
11.What's the attitude of astronomers towards light pollution
A.Uncaring. B.Unclear. C.Worried. D.Satisfied.

The unusual whistle language used as a means of communication by villagers in the remote and mountainous northern Turkey has been added to the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The language is a highly developed high-pitch system of whistling to communicate in rugged areas where people mostly cannot see each other. It can allow people to communicate across great distances, up to 5 pared with other similar whistle languages in Spain's Canary Islands, in Mexico, or in Greek villages, it has a higher tone and larger vocabulary.

But 50 years ago, the bird language suffered greatly due to the impact of the progression of technology and nowadays the rapid growth of cellular mobile systems has put this cultural heritage under serious threat.
For centuries, the language has been passed on from grandparent to parent, from parent to child. Now, though, many of its most skilful speakers who use their tongue, teeth and fingers are aging and becoming physically weak. Young people are no longer interested in learning the language or in finding ways to update its vocabulary with new words, and in a few generations it may be gone for good.
“Our bird language is very convenient and efficient to communicate across the valleys. It has many benefits over yelling, which is bad for our throats.” said Avni Kocek, head of the bird village adding that despite setbacks because of technology, “Bird language is still used by many of us. Whistle language is transmitted from our elders to us and we have the duty to transmit it to our children. We are making efforts to keep our culture alive through the yearly Bird Language Festival.”
Besides, the bird language has been required to be taught at primary schools since 2014 by district authorities in order to put the practice in younger generations.
12.What is probably the meaning of the underlined word in Paragraph 2
A.crowded B.suitable C.unsmooth D.impressive

A.It has become a subject at primary schools.
