In the heart of Daventry, five-year-old Oliver always cherishes tender moments with his mother, Codi Pow, who was a dedicated student nurse in the hospital in the town.
Codi has suffered from high blood pressure since a young age, and grapples with persistent health issues, which could easily trigger potential stroke or heart problems. She still remembers in the winter when her son was three years old, she got an unexpected tooth infection, which worsened dramatically, leaving her in hospital for a week. That tooth infection almost brought an end to her life.
As a student nurse, Codi navigates her daily routine with enormous care. She knows clearly that she should attend to herself well, taking pills on time, curbing her emotions, reducing the -sodium input, and so on. Her doctor’s repeated warnings echo in her mind, emphasizing the need to avoid infection that could lead to severe complications(并发症).
Oliver lives a life no different from other kids in the neighborhood, filled with playful activities, joyous singing, and the routine trips to kindergarten. What sets him apart is that he stands out for his unique passion: health and safety. During playtime, he eagerly absorbs himself in a toy first aid kit and asks his mum about medical things. Oliver has collected a surprising amount of knowledge on health and safety, despite being just five.
One quiet Sunday morning, while preparing breakfast for Oliver, Codi felt it a bit difficult to breathe. She went to the hospital with chest pain, swelling to her neck and a lump in the same area. She had a blood test, chest X-Ray and ECG before being sent home and advised to see her doctor later after she got the test reports.
By 1: 30 in the afternoon, Codi was doing washing in the kitchen while chatting with Oliver when her condition drastically worsened. She felt a high fever, the sign of a possible infection. All of a sudden, she had a blackout, and her legs gave out. She fell onto the kitchen floor like a sack of sand.

Charlie was very obedient to his parents and teachers, for which everyone loved him a lot. Due to his father’s job, his family moved to a new city, where he entered a new school. As Charlie was a good boy, soon most of his new classmates became his good friends. The teachers also praised this new boy, because of his intelligence and nice behavior to all.
But there was one boy in the class who did not like Charlie at all! His name was Bill and he was a very naughty boy, for which no one liked him at all. He found that Charlie was a quiet boy. So he started creating troubles for his new classmate. At the lunchtime, when Charlie was having lunch, Bill came up to him and asked, “Hey, what do you have for lunch ” “It’s cake and sweets,” Charlie replied with a smile.
“I love sweets and so I will eat this food today.” Bill said grudgingly. He snatched the lunch box from Charlie. The other boys sitting around were furious, but no one dared to protest due to fears of being bullied by Bill and his little gang.
From that day on, Bill regularly ate Charlie’s lunch and even threw away the water from his water bottle one day. But Charlie still kept quiet and did not complain to the teacher. Bill never did his homework and always forced the good boys of the class, including Charlie, to write it down on his copy for him! When Charlie’s parents learned about all these bullies of Bill, they wanted to come to the school and complain about this naughty boy. But Charlie stopped them and said, “Mom, Dad, please do not worry. Everything will be all right. After all, Bill is also a kid like me.”

“This is the very best part of carving pumpkins!” Jackson said. He was at the kitchen sink with Dad and they both had their hands in bowls of pumpkin seeds. Dad turned the water on to wash the seeds in his bowl, while Jackson squeezed a handful of seeds in his hand and watched the seeds squeeze through his closed fist.
“The very best part is eating the golden roasted seeds!” Dad said, asking Jackson to tip the wet clean seeds onto a dish towel stretched across the counter near the sink.
“I always love eating seeds! But how to roast them Did you look it up on YouTube ” Jackson asked. Dad laughed and shook his head. “No. Your Grandpa and I used to do this together. Right here at this same sink!”
Jackson was amazed. Dad continued as he washed the seeds. “We carved the pumpkins just the same way we do now. Maybe someday you will be standing here and washing pumpkin seeds with your son.”
The next day, Dad and Jackson were back in the kitchen and by the window the seeds were dry, bathed in the warm sunlight. Dad placed two large cookie sheets and a large mixing bowl on the table, the same bowl that he and Grandpa used to use.
“I bet you miss your parents a lot, huh ” Jackson said while watching Dad bringing a measuring cup with melted butter to the table. “Yes. I do. Whenever someone you love dies, you always miss them. But you also have lots of good memories to remember and those make you happy,” Dad said, pouring the butter into the mixing bowl. Jackson picked up some salt and dumped it in. Dad then poured some olive oil in.
“Grab a spoon and stir all of this,” Dad told Jackson as he turned the oven on. “Now, all we have to do is put all of the seeds in the bowl and mix them up until they are all covered with the oil, butter, and salt mixture. Then we can put the seeds on the cookie sheets and then put them in the oven.”

“Hey! Don’t tell me you’re scared!” Sasha smiled at Rosie, then leaned into her horse’s cheek and circled his head with her arms, as if he were nothing but a big stuffed animal.
“I’m not.” The lie didn’t sound as definite as Rosie wished it did. She turned away from Sasha. How could her roommate be so comfortable around these huge animals
Rosie shook as Nugget blew out a long snort(响鼻). After begging to come to two weeks of riding camp, Rosie’s cowgirl riding dreams had dried up like the red -brown dirt at her feet.
All winter Rosie had pictured herself galloping(骑马奔驰)on a horse down the country roads and fields in the camp brochure. Since she was little, whenever she and her parents headed out of town to where Chicago turned into country, Rosie would imagine she was outside the car, galloping on the back of a beautiful horse, hair long and windblown.
“You are so, scared,” Sasha said. “I can tell.” A strange smile grew on her face. “It’s in the eyes,” Sasha said in an odd, silly voice.
Rosie forced a smile and took a small step toward Nugget. “Hi,” she said softly, reaching out an arm.
Nugget gave start, and Rosie jumped back. Her throat closed up, and tears burned the corners of her eyes. “You’ll just scare her, doing that,” Sasha said. She walked over to Nugget and stroked her neck. “It’s OK, girl. Calm down, it’s OK.”
“Sasha, get back to your horse, please.” Callie, the riding instructor, came over, planting herself between Rosie and Sasha. “You afraid, Rosie ” she asked quietly.
“A little,” Rosie whispered to Callie.
“Watch out, Rosie!” Sasha said, and then laughed. “Don’t let Nugget get you!”
“Sasha! Mount up and quiet down,” Callie said.
Sasha reached up to her saddle(马鞍)with the reins(缰绳)in her left hand, and in one quick, smooth move, was up and settled.
“Ready to mount up ” Callie’s eyes questioned Rosie silently.
A cry escaped from Rosie’s throat. Her heart pounded wildly.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文, 根据所给情节进行续写, 使之构成一个完整的故事。
December strode(阔步走)into the mountains of Colorado, shooting snowflakes and blowing them into a thick blanket of white. As Christmas approached, the farmers there closed down most wooden houses for a holiday cheer. Not all were closed, however. There was still work to be done, and someone had to stay. That someone was Slim Carter.
Old Jake, another farmer there, had offered to keep him company, but Slim shook his head. “After all, a young man like me has got plenty of Christmases ahead, ”Slim joked. Before Jake offered to stay again, Slim hurried on. “I'll just have a private Christmas this year, and that's the way I want it. ”So he was left alone at the house. Alone, with his horse in the farm and the wolves roaring in the forest nearby.
Truth was, Slim had decided not to celebrate Christmas at all. It wasn't that he didn't like Christmas. In fact, his Christmas memories were good ones. His mother would fill their house with the light of candles and the smell of candy. His father would make their Christmas tree hunt an all-day, men-only affair. Slim smiled as he remembered sitting on the broad back of their horse with the freshly cut tree along behind. Back home, they would cover the tree with paper snowflakes and homemade decorations and sing all the Christmas songs they knew. And that's the way he liked it. Those were the memories he pulled out on nights when he was working alone. Such memories warmed him inside, even if his outsides were aching with cold.
This was Slim's first year away from home. “Christmas is nothing if not spent with family, "Slim declared to the empty house. That was the real reason he'd sent Jake away. He figured he would handle Christmas better if he just pretended it was an ordinary winter workday.
But on Christmas Eve, as Slim headed back with snow beneath his feet and stars overhead, his head hung low. It was Christmas, even without the tree and the gifts. Christmas, and he was all alone.

With his finger tips, Jackson helped Dad spread the seeds out on the cookie sheets and carefully placed them in the preheated oven. The moment the seeds were ready and pulled out, a nice golden color came into sight and a pleasant scent floated up. “That’s the smell in my memory!” Dad exclaimed, a sudden sense of accomplishment and connection filling the air. Jackson couldn’t wait to reach out for the seeds.
“I just realized something too, Dad,” Jackson said while enjoying the seeds. Dad responded with a puzzled look. Jackson smiled, “We are making happy memories right now!” “We sure are,” Dad laughed as he put his arm around Jackson and gave him a quick hug. Right in front of them were the golden roasted seeds with the warm and familiar taste. These seeds were more than just a snack but also a taste of family tradition and love.
