The annual Halloween arrived, during which kids dressed in traditional clothes went to neighbors’ houses to ask for candy.
Allison lived in a small town. That day after dinner, Allison put on her dress her father had just bought for her. The dress was cheap and second-hand because her family was poor. But Allison still thanked her dad and said, “Everyone will love my dress!” Then, she left for neighbors’ houses to ask for candy.
On the way, she came across Anna and her friends and wanted to join them. “No! Look at your dress! It’s ugly!” Anna said. Her friends also laughed. “Look at our dresses, especially mine! It’s new and beautiful,” Anna added. Her friends nodded, and in some way they were right. Anna’s dress was shiny and looked expensive. She always had the best clothes because her parents were rich.
Allison was shocked and sad. The kids not only disliked her dress but made fun of it. “You can’t come with us!” Anna stressed. “We would never hang out with you!” The other kids agreed and laughed. They all left to start collecting candy for the night while Allison was left alone, embarrassed in the middle of the street.
Anyway, she knew all the neighbors. She often helped around carrying their groceries and helping them with their gardens. People around there knew her. She didn’t need to hangout with Anna or her friends. “I’ll go just alone,” the little girl said to herself and started walking.
She as well as Anna and her friends walked in the same direction: towards their first neighbor Mrs. Vaughan’s house. But Allison walked behind and kept her distance from them. And she stopped when Anna and her friends were near Mrs. Vaughan’s house.
Just then, Mrs. Vaughan looked out of her window. She noticed that Allison was being excluded by Anna and her friends. She knew it was probably because of Allison’s poor dress. She immediately felt pity for Allison, who often helped her and other neighbors. She decided to give Allison much more candy as a reward and teach Anna and her friends a lesson.

On the first day of school, I stared in awe at the huge buildings. This high school was definitely bigger than the one I had previously attended.
This was my second year of high school, but my first year of school in St. Louis. I had decided the night before that I would be much happier in a new school if I made friends that were so-called “popular”. Getting in with the right group of people would make my life a whole lot better. I even bought a new outfit and had my hair styled just so the first day would be perfect.
Scared, yet anxious to begin my new life, I walked up the stairs to the front door. The halls were packed with kids yelling and laughing and telling stories of their summer adventures. My first class was geometry, but where was that
I was standing in the hall looking confused, when a short, blond girl wearing glasses came up and asked, “Are you new You look lost. Do you need help My name is Diane. What’s yours ” Even though she seemed a bit strange, definitely not the kind of person I wanted to be associated with, I decided to answer her anyway. I was, after all, lost.
After exchanging names. I followed her up the stairs and down a hallway on the right, making polite conversation the whole way. When we reached my room she said, “Well, here you are. Welcome to JFK, and I hope your day goes all right.”
I said thanks and waved good-bye. Once inside the classroom, I saw one big group of people huddled around someone who seemed to be telling some sort of story. I walked over and got close enough to overhear. All eyes were glued to the guy in the middle of the circle who was wearing a letter jacket covered with patches. I decided that this guy was popular, so I managed to get a seat right next to him. I said, “Hi, my name is Lisa and I’m new here.” He said, “Johnny.”

I knew I would have a beyond-busy summer. I would be a junior teacher for the Little Dragons Karate(空手道) Camp. And I had to do summer swim team. And Ollie and I already had two customers for our dog-walking business.
“You might be biting off more than you can chew,” my mom said with a warning glimpse when I talked to her about it and announced, "I want to do everything!"
“Don’t worry.” I grinned. “I have strong teeth!”
My mom smiled back. “In this case, its your organizational skills, not your teeth, that need to be strong.” I didn't take it to my heart.
And the first week really was no problem. My friend Ollie was out of town and karate camp hadn’t started, so my swim stuff was all I needed to worry about. The next week was great too. I swam, and a Little Dragon at karate camp told me I was his favorite teacher ever!
I did learn, though, that staying organized with two activities was harder. My backpack was already stuffed with a towel and swim things, so I needed another for my karate clothing. Riding my bike from karate camp to the pool with two backpacks was a challenge. But I still had it under control until Ollie got back.
“We’re late getting our business together!” he said. “We’ll have to spend every spare minute preparing.”
“But I don't have any spare minutes!” I said.
“Did you forget we agreed to walk Alfie every Saturday And Muffin on Tuesdays at 4:00 ” Ollie asked. I couldn’t let Ollie down, so I took out a third backpack and filled it with dog toys, treats, and plastic bags. I thought I was all set.
But I was wrong! It didn't take long for my dog-walking stuff and karate stuff and swim stuff to get all mixed up, forgotten, or lost. One day, I forgot my karate backpack and had to borrow Emma's extra outfit, which was too tight. The next day, I remembered my karate stuff but forgot my swimsuit, so I had to help out in the snack shop and stay out of the pool all afternoon. And another time, when I reached into my dog-walking pack for plastic bags, all I could find were swim goggles(护目镜) and sunscreen.

Jordy sat on the steps of his old row house, eating a cucumber(黄瓜) and watching the rush hour traffic. “I’m gonna tell Mama you took a whole cucumber and ate it all up^ said his sister, Katie. “I did not take a whole one,” answered Jordy. “I had to cut off a rotten (腐坏的) part,” He spit some of the seeds across the little plot of dirt that was their yard. “This cucumber sure is a seedy one,” he complained.
A woman in a red dress got off the bus at the comer. Katie ran to meet her. By the time Mama got to the steps, she had heard all about Jordy eating the cucumber. “You know you’re not supposed to just go help yourself” Mama scolded. “You know how much food is these days.” Jordy nodded. “But high prices won’t get us this summer,’’ Mama went on. “We’re going to have a garden.” “Is Papa gonna dig up our front yard ” asked Jordy. “You’re gonna dig it up,” corrected Mama. “Papa’s got enough to do fixing people’s cars and trucks.” Unwillingly, Jordy did the work, and after the vegetables started coming up. Papa sent him out to weed the garden.
One day Jordy noticed a strange plant next to the fence. It didn’t look like a vegetable, but then it didn’t look like a weed either. Jordy thought maybe it was a flower so he left it. Every day Jordy went out to see how much it had grown. Having a favorite plant made the work in the garden seem easier.
One Saturday when Katie was looking at the plant, she suddenly jumped back. “Jordy^ plant is climbing up the fence and it’s got fuzz (绒毛),” she shouted. Papa heard the screaming and came to look. Rick, a ten-year-old boy, was constantly angry at everything around him. He always fought in school with the other kids. Once he had an outburst in school. Upset by something a classmate said to him, he pushed the other boy, and a fight happened. When the teacher stepped in to break it up, Rick went crazy, throwing papers and books around the classroom and rushing out of the classroom. His teachers couldn't say anything that would comfort the kid. And the parents of his schoolmates were getting concerned. The boy was earning quite the reputation. After talking with school officials, Rick's mom tried everything she could to calm Rick down.
She tried different methods until one day she came home with a canvas(画布)and paint. "What's this ” Rick asked. Rick's mom handed over the painting equipment and said," Whenever you feel angry, paint whatever it is you're angry about instead of bursting out." Rick wasn't that happy about it but he gave it a shot anyway. Over the next few weeks, the young boy created several artworks. They mostly showed disturbing images though. So his mom took all of the paintings and called Rick over so that they could talk about them. "Tell me, Rick. What are these paintings about "
"Well, the first painting is about how some of the kids show off their new clothes and pencil cases. The next painting is about my teacher who keeps on telling me about how I'm doing things wrong. And the last painting is about how one of my schoolmate's father suggested that I change my attitude. All of them make me so angry." Rick's mom, in a calm voice, took Rick by her side and told him: "Don't you see it, Rick " "See what " Rick asked. "You're so angry at all of these things but not once did you try to understand why you're getting so angry. What have all these people done to you, really " Mum explained.

Lungs nearly bursting, I struggled to lift my head out of the water. Inch by inch, my tired body reached for the end of the pool.
Earlier that week, I had turned in my first job application at a local pool. Overqualified, I was hired on the spot. However, the tasks were boring: helping confused visitors and measuring the height of children before they went down the slide, those sorts of things. I was competent for more.
So a swim test was required, establishing the mere fact that I was not completely helpless in a pool. Midway through, the manager administering the test remarked. "This looks really easy for you. Why aren't you applying to become a guard "
"The thought hadn't crossed my mind."
"Well, lifeguarding demands more responsibility, strength and respect. Thus the position pays $2 more per hour. Your swimming skills are strong enough. All you need to do is complete a certification class. "Inside I was unsure of myself, but his words inspired me — You never know what you are competent to do until you force yourself to do it. Soon I passed the swim test. All left was to practice and learn first aid, CPR(心肺复苏), and procedures for different land and water-based emergencies.
Work started soon. Days, weeks, and months went by without incident; emergencies were rare. The skills and training I had so carefully studied and attained seemed unnecessary.
Today appeared to be another uneventful(平静无事) day. However, shortly after the other guards signaled to the children to exit the pool, I noticed one boy was still in the middle while the others had climbed up.

I love parties. I love planning for them, making the invitations, planning the games and decorating my own cake. The only thing that I don't like is deciding on the guest list. When I was in grade school my mom would tell me the maximum number of friends that I could invite and it was always a number too small for my list.
I also liked all different kinds of people. I never quite fit into one of the many little groups at my school, so I just kind of floated around, accumulating friends from various backgrounds. There was an "in" crowd made up of the cool kids who had the power to rule the school-if a cool kid wore two different colored socks to school one day, everyone thought it was great. But if an uncool kid did the same thing, the other kids would turn away in disgust(厌恶). It made getting dressed in the morning a very scary thing.
Shannon was one of my friends who seemed to unknowingly break the rules of "uncoolness" all the time. I don't know why she was targeted, but people found it acceptable to make fun of her. Shannon was a nice girl and wore pretty clothes, but was somewhat overweight and didn't talk much. She was picked on a lot. Whenever there was an strange noise or smell in the classroom the kids would giggle(咯咯笑) and point at her. Shannon never said anything, but it made me feel sick inside. Shannon was innocent, I thought.
One year, to celebrate my birthday, my mom told me I could have a party at our house. I struggled for days deciding on which girls to invite. Once I had chosen all the names, I made the invitations and handed them out to my friends at school.
"Why did you invite her " asked one of my cool friends when it was discovered that I had invited Shannon. She pressured me to tell her not to come. There were other people I could add in her place who would be more acceptable.

Now most of her days were spent baking bread and cookies or with friends and neighbors.
When Eloise returned from a get-together with her friends one evening, Josh pointed to a black-and-white picture lying on the table, and said, “Hi, Grandma. 1 found this in my closet (壁橱),Is that you and Granddad ” Eloise looked at the picture and laughed quietly. “Oh, that was a long time ago. I must have overlooked it when I was cleaning to make room for your things.”
“That’s your granddad and me before we were married. We met at a party. I loved to dance, and he was a good dancer,” Eloise smiled, enjoying the memories that came flooding back.
“After we got married, we rarely had time to go dancing. But every once in a while, after the children went to bed, we’d pull out the record player and dance in the backyard under the stars.”
Leaning back in his chair, Josh appeared to be enjoying the story. “Wow, Granddad was quite a romantic guy!”
“Yeah. He was very romantic. I still miss him dearly.” Eloise shook her head, attempting to get rid of the lonely feeling that was beginning to form. “Well, it’s getting late now. Let’s get some sleep.” “I’ve really enjoyed hearing the story about you and Granddad,” Josh hugged his grandma. Then he went back to his room.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
The park bench was deserted as I sat down to read beneath the long branches of an old willow tree. I was abandoned. Endless quarrels with my family had left me nowhere to go but this desolate corner of the park. As I sat on the bench, recent events began to flash through my mind. Days seemed like months to me recently. No cozy home to stay. No happy memories with family. No considerate family members to talk to. Even the book I was reading was no fun. Not content with life, I had a good reason to frown, for the world was intended to drag me down.
And if that weren't enough to ruin my day, a young boy out of breath approached me, all tired from play. He stood right in front of me with his head tilted down and said with great excitement, “Look what I found!” In his hand was a flower. What a pitiful sight, its petals were all worn-not enough rain, or too little light. He must have picked the flower from somewhere shady and sunless, just like where I was staying these days. I couldn't help being self-pitying. Wanting him to take his dead flower away and go off to play, I faked a small smile and then looked away. “Why couldn't everyone just leave me be!” I thought to myself, upset and gloomy.
But instead of leaving, he sat next to my side and placed the flower to his nose and declared loudly with certainty, “It sure smells pretty and it must be beautiful, too. That's why I picked it; here, it's for you.” The weed before me was dying or dead, not vibrant of colors, orange, yellow or red. But I knew I must take it, or he might never leave. So I reached for the flower, and replied, “Just what I need." Again, instead of placing the flower in my hand, he held it mid-air without reason or plan. Curiosity drove me to look into his eyes. Blue as the sea, there is no color or light in his beautiful eyes.

答案以及解析
一、
答案:
When Anna and her friends knocked on her door, Mrs. Vaughan opened it. The girls greeted her, showed off their beautiful clothes and asked for candy. Mrs. Vaughan, who held a bag of sweets, asked them to wait for a moment. Then, she waved to Allison, calling out, “Dear, come here!” When Allison came, Mrs. Vaughan said, “Oh, how beautiful you are today!” Then, she gave Allison most of her candy although the girl declined. When Allison walked away, Mrs. Vaughan divided the rest of the candy among Anna and her friends, who were a little angry and confused.
Anna looked up and said, “Our clothes are more beautiful! But you gave Allison more candy! Why ” Mrs. Vaughan looked down calmly and explained that Allison was always friendly to neighbors. “She has great inner beauty. Inner beauty is more important. Why not be friends with her ” Mrs. Vaughan added. Hearing that, Anna and her friends’ faces turned red and they realized they had done something wrong. They said goodbye to Mrs. Vaughan, caught up with Allison, and sincerely invited Allison to join them. Allison nodded gladly and had new friends, who would no longer judge her by her clothes.

答案:
At the end of the class, I turned to him and asked, “I’m not sure where my next class is, could you help me ” With a frown, he looked at me and then said a quick no, turned back to his friends, and walked out of the classroom. As they were walking out I heard him say, “Did you guys see that new girl trying to get into our group That outfit was too strange.” They all laughed and some of them turned around and stared at me. My face hot with shame, I stood stock-still, not believing what had just happened.
Just at that time, someone came up and tapped me on the shoulder. It was Diane. Like a ray of sunshine, the big smile on her face swept away my gloom. I struggled to hold my feelings back and told her what I had encountered. A gleam of concern in her eyes, she said she was sorry and offered to find my next class. At that moment I realized how wrong I was in wanting to only be friends with popular people. Maybe I shouldn’t decide whether a person is worth being my friend or not by their reputation, but by who they are.

四、
答案:
Version 1:
Worse still, I had to keep track of all the special times. I had to arrive early for the karate test on Monday. I had to stay later to help with swimming pool cleanup on Friday. I had to pick up Alfie 15 minutes early on Saturday. I had to walk Muffin on Tuesday afternoons. I ran around like a chicken with its head off, on the verge of breaking down. It was then that I recalled my mother’s warning. Although embarrassed beyond words, I worked up the nerve and walked to my parents, making a clean breast of my trouble and calling for backup.
Luckily, I, with my parents, came up with a solution to get organized. We started with a calendar, on which I marked all my tasks with a red marker. Then we found three bags respectively used for my dog-walking stuff, karate stuff and swim stuff. We also put a whiteboard in the kitchen to make sure that I took the right bag on the appropriate day. From then on, my beyond-busy summer was smooth sailing, during which I learned a valuable lesson: If you tried to use the dog’s rope as your karate belt, it’s time to improve your organizational skill.
Version 2:
Worse still, I had to keep track of all the special times. I had to arrive early for the karate test on Monday. I had to stay later to help with swimming pool cleanup on Friday. I had to pick up Alfie 15 minutes early on Saturday. My life was a catastrophe. Admitting I was wrong was never my favorite thing, but I knew I had to make a change. "Help!" I flopped onto the couch at the end of a particularly discombobulated day and cried, "Everything’s everywhere and nothing’s anywhere and I keep being late and messing up."In this way I succeeded in catching my parents’ eyes.
Luckily, I, with my parents, came up with a solution to get organized. We started with a daily pocket calendar that had room to write all my tasks. Then we found three drawstring bags that fitted into one big backpack, so I could keep my stuff separated but still in one place. We also put a whiteboard in the kitchen with brightly colored reminders and a checklist to make sure I had everything I needed. From then on, my beyond-busy summer was smooth sailing. I learned an important lesson: If you tried to use the dog's rope as your karate belt, it’s time to improve your organizational skill.

“But it’s not hurting anything,” protested Jordy. “Can’t it stay, please ” Papa sighed but agreed. He knew how much the boy liked the vine and how he’d been taking such good care of the garden. The next week it rained a lot. When the sun came out, Jordy held his breath and went to see if the vegetables had caught the disease or if it had spread some more. More green fuzz, all over the vine now. He went to see the beginning of the vine where Katie had first noticed the fuzz. It couldn’t be. But it was! Cucumbers!
“Mama, Papa! A miracle!” Jordy screamed. Mama ran out of the door, followed by Katie. Papa scooted out from under the car he was fixing. The three wondered what had happened. “Cucumbers!” Jordy pointed at the vine and the family all looked closely. They sure were cucumbers. Papa reached out and patted Jordy’s head. “All growing on the fence and not taking up any room. Jordy, you’re the smartest gardener I know.” Jordy felt proud of himself and realized that caring for a plant does need a lot of patience!

Rick thought about it. It slowly dawned on him that people he was angry at didn't do anything wrong. His classmates were showing off their good fortune but never laughed at him. It wasn't their fault that they were richer than he was. His teacher might have blamed him but he was, admittedly, being a problem because of his attitude. And his schoolmate's father was only trying to help him correct his mistakes.
Rick knew that his mom came to the point. “I see it now, mom. I was controlled by bad temper.” Rick said. “That’s right, son. You should do a better job of controlling anger before it consumes you. You’re not a little boy anymore. You should know better by now.” Mum responded happily. It took a while but eventually, Rick became less excited over the simplest things. He even started to feel happiness when around other children.

答案:
"Something must have gone wrong with him," I thought to myself. As it turned out, with a closer look, I found the boy waving his hands and struggling in the water desperately. Without a second thought, I dived into the water, swimming towards the boy at full speed. By the time I reached him, he had nearly sunk to the bottom of the pool, his face pale and his head hanging down, which threw me into great concern and huge panic. I picked the boy up and headed to the poolside with all my strength, keeping his head above the water.
Having the boy on the floor, I put my ear to his mouth and my fingers at his neck. It came as a shock to me that he wasn't breathing. To make matters worse, I could hardly feel his heartbeat. Every second counted! Without the slightest hesitation I did first aid to him, giving him mouth-to-mouth breathing and doing CPR as I had been trained before. After what seemed a century, I suddenly felt his body moved, a stream of water bursting out of his mouth, and then came the sound of the boy coughing intensely. Seeing the boy come back to life, those surrounding us burst into cheers. Realizing that all my efforts eventually paid off, I breathed a sigh of relief, a smile lighting up my face.

With everything ready, all he had to do was wait for the starry night to come.

十、
答案:
It was then that I noticed for the very first time that the boy could not see: he was blind. I heard my voice trembling. Tears shone like the sun as I thanked him for picking the very best flower "You're welcome," he smiled, and then ran off to play, not realizing the impact he'd had on my day. I sat there and wondered how he managed to see a self-pitying woman beneath an old willow tree. How did he know my self-indulged plight (困境) Perhaps he’d been blessed with true sight from his heart by God.
For all of those times I myself had been blind towards the world around me. Through the eyes of a blind boy, at last I could see, the problem was not with the world; the problem was me. I decided and promised to see the beauty, and appreciate every second of my life. Then I held that withered flower up to my nose and breathed in the fragrance of a beautiful rose, smiling like that young boy. Another flower in his hand was about to change the life of an unsuspecting old man.
