About six months ago, I joined a gym. Every morning, there was one personal trainer who worked out. He did his routine with such a quiet determination that he made it all look very easy. When I wanted to quit, I watched him push himself to his own limits, and I found myself motivated to work hard.
Several weeks ago, I was watching him do chin-ups (引体向上) effortlessly. I asked him if I could try a chin-up. I had never tried before. He eagerly stepped aside and encouraged me to step up to the bar. I pulled myself up without thinking... Once...then twice. I had no strength left. I told him that was all I had, so he stepped up behind me and pushed me up for a third and a fourth pull. It felt so good and I smiled from ear to ear.
The next day when I was done with my workout, I asked him to spot me again. Again, I did two. Again on day three and so on. I thought it was pitiful that I could only do two, but he said he was impressed with my chin-ups, explaining that most people couldn’t do them at all. He further told me that if I practiced every day, I would be doing five or six in no time.
I just jumped in and gave it a try. A few months had passed since that memorable day at the gym. I continued to work on my chin-ups, slowly but steadily. With each passing week, I could feel my strength increasing and my determination growing.
One day, as I approached the chin-up bar, my trainer noticed the determination in my eyes. He smiled and said, “You know, you’ve come a long way in such a short time. I believe it’s time to set a new goal for yourself.” I asked, “What do you have in mind ” He replied, “How about aiming for ten consecutive (连续不断的) chin-ups I have no doubt that you can achieve it with your insistence.”

I spent almost three years in food service doing everything from washing dishes to working as a service director at a country club, Firstly, I waited tables, and it was actually one of my favorite jobs, mostly because of the people, One thing I learned is doing your job right . and focusing on ensuring that your customers have the best dining experience.
During college, I worked at a place called O’Malleys. It’s not open anymore so I don’t have to worry about getting anybody in trouble, and besides, this isn’t that kind of story. Every Sunday, these two ladies and a little girl would come in, and nobody wanted to wait on them because they were super cheap and never tipped, so I volunteered, and they became my regulars, I quickly learned that it was a mom, her young daughter, and her mother. They always ordered the same thing. They’d each get water, The two women would split an entree (主菜), and the young girl would get something off the child’s menu. And they’d leave no tip. I didn’t really care because Sunday lunch was always busy with the crowd, and their check was so small that even a 20% tip would have been just a few dollars. Besides, they were super nice, and I understood that this was their special time out. Going out just wasn’t something they could do. I did my best to treat them just like everybody else, which they appreciated.
This went on for over a year, Every Sunday, they would come in their pretty dresses, sit in my section, order the same thing they always did, and not leave me a tip. . . until one day, they did.
That day, they came in and ordered iced tea and a soda for the girl, I knew something was up. The two ladies each got their own entree nothing share, The little girl got a full order of chicken strips. I’m not sure why I remember exactly what she ordered.

Next to our house lived an old couple, who, accustomed to country life, were unwilling to move to the city to live with their son and stuck in a lonely existence for many years. It seemed that they didn’t feel like making any new connections with others, including their next-door neighbours.
The neighborhood kids nicknamed the strange old couple Crazy Jack and Ruby Rednose. Rumor (流言,传言) was that they sat inside and drank tea all day. The only words we ever heard from them were “Keep out of our rosebushes!” The rosebushes crawled along the fence. Or rather, they served as a fence between our house and theirs, overgrowing the support.
I was eleven at the time and the oldest of our family girls. A suitable playing court was a headache problem for us when we felt like playing softball games, which was our favourite sport then. We should have played our softball games elsewhere to avoid hurting the roses, but we secretly enjoyed annoying Crazy Jack and Ruby Rednose.
One day, we had a softball game in our yard. Mary was trying to catch a fly ball. She stumbled (绊倒) over one of Ruby Rednose’s rosebushes and fell on top of several more. Just at that moment, Ruby Rednose sprang out and ran toward Mary. She screamed angrily, “Look at what you’ve doneto our family’s roses! You’ve always been a trouble. You have no idea what this rosebush means to me!”
Hearing this, my sisters and I ran into our house. Breathlessly, we told Mom what had happened. “Girls, I have told you not to play softball near those e outside right now and help me fix them.” “Mom, we thought you didn’t like the couple,” we protested. “They’re mean to us.” Mom just glared at us. We followed her outside to help repair the rose fence. While Mom was examining the damaged roses, Ruby slowly walked out. She looked sad. And it wasn’t her nose that was red, but her eyes.

Those walks were more than just physical exercise. They were a journey into my grandfather’s wisdom. He’d wove tales of his colorful youth, painting vivid pictures of adventures and lessons learned. His advice was like a compass guiding me through life’s maze (迷宫), highlighting the importance of being kind and understanding in a world that often appeared uncaring. I often looked forward to those walks with eager anticipation.
Our bond grew stronger within the simple embrace of routine. The weathered bench beneath the oak tree became our safe place, a harbor of shared moments. Grandpa, with his worn yet cherished lunchbox, would unpack a simple feast comprising a sandwich, a piece of fruit, and a bottle of tea.
In those instances, it felt like time stopped, allowing laughter to dance in the air and silent understanding to say so much. Our connection didn’t rely on fancy things; it grew strong in the simple way we were friends.
The unavoidable leaving came, making me feel a huge sense of loss. Grandpa’s passing away left a big emptiness, a silence that couldn’t be filled. In the sadness, I felt upset that the family focused more on getting things from him rather than remembering the values and memories he gave us. It was like they forgot how he held us together, beyond just what he owned.
Looking for comfort, I went back to the park that held the pieces of our shared happiness. Away from the mourning crowd, the bench beneath the oak tree stood as a silent witness to our past moments. As I approached, my heart ached with the realization that those cherished moments were now memories. But something caught my eye-a small box and a letter, both addressed to me.

When I look back on my childhood, the first image that springs to my mind is the daisy (雏菊) kept in my dictionary, which always reminds me of my lunchtimes with my mother.
When I was in the third grade, I was picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had practised my lines (台词) so hard with me. But no matter how easily I delivered them at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator’s (旁白) part to the play, and asked me to switch roles.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my pain, and instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine (藤蔓) was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow daisies popping through the grass in bunches, as if a painter had touched our landscape with a little bit of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one of the daisies. “I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, suddenly pulling a flower up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”
“But I like daisies,” I protested (抗议). “All flowers are beautiful——even daisies.” My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower has its own beauty, doesn’t it ” she asked thoughtfully. I nodded, feeling pleased that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added, “Not everyone can be a princess. Hence, there is no shame in that.”
Relieved that she had sensed my pain, I started to cry when I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled.

【答案】I was both excited and nervous about this new challenge. Ten chin-ups seemed like a significant leap from where I had started, but the belief my trainer had in me fueled my determination, I accepted the challenge and got to work. Every morning, I pushed myself harder than before. The numbers slowly climbed: three, four, five and then seven chin-ups, It was challenging, but I remembered the lesson that I had learned. The most difficult tasks can be achieved through consistent effort and belief in oneself.
Finally, one morning, it happened. I pulled myself up to the bar and completed ten consecutive chin-ups. I couldn’t contain my excitement and joy. I felt a profound sense of accomplishment. I achieved my goal through persistence. I had made it a reality. As I continue my fitness journey, I carry this lesson with me: No matter how daunting the obstacle may seem, the belief and persistence can help me overcome it. It’s not just about physical strength but also about mental fortitude and the power of setting and achieving goals.

【答案】范文
Of course , I asked what the celebration was. I mean, it was obvious this was a special occasion. The mother of the small girl smiled at me and said, “I just graduated from nursing school. We wanted to come see you one last time and say thank you for making our Sundays so special. It meant so much to us to come in here and be treated like everybody else, even though we could never order very much or leave you a tip.
The mother said they were moving to Dallas the next week. She said, “We won’t becoming back. I got a job at Major Hospital, and we won’t see you anymore. ” I smiled and wished them the best of luck, letting them know I’d miss them. They enjoyed the delicious food happily. When I picked up their check, they had left me a fifty-dollar tip, which was about 150% of their bill. From the story, I see: Don’t worry about tips because you never know the customer’s true story. Sometimes the memory is worth more than the money.

【答案】Ruby walked over to my mother, we girls holding our breath. We waited to see who would shout first and what terrible things would be said. “We are sorry about the flowers. The girls will fix them and help weed the roses.” said Mom. My sisters and I looked at each other in horror, but Ruby smiled through her tears. “I know we’re particular about these roses, but they’re very special because they remind me of my mother.” Soon both women were down on their knees examining the damaged bushes together.
A few weeks later, the plants all came back to life. My mother and Ruby worked together on the roses all summer and many summers to follow. So did my sisters and I. A friendship was formed between the families. Ruby became part of our family, spending many happy hours at our house, especially during countless birthdays, graduations and weddings. And the rose fence wasn’t a fence any longer. My mother had turned it into a bridge.

【答案】Para 1:
With a mixture of curiosity, I picked up the letter and read it. The familiar handwriting stroked my heartstrings, transporting me back to the moments shared with Grandpa. In his words, he expressed his pride in the person I had become and his hope that I would continue to grow with kindness and courage. He acknowledged that while things in life were temporary, the impact we had on each other was eternal. The letter was his final gift to me, a testament to our bond that transcended the physical world.
Para 2:
Overcome with emotions, I opened the box. Inside, I found a small, carved wooden compass. It was a replica of the one he always carried, a symbol of the guidance he had given me. This compass, unlike any other, pointed not to physical directions but to the path of my heart, leading me towards the kindness and understanding he had instilled in me.
