It was a sunny day this April, and I was flying with my boy off to Carnavon in my light aircraft to see a solar eclipse (日食). Looking out of the window, I was deeply absorbed in the picturesque scenery below. My son Jacob, 15, who was enthusiastic about flying, was in high spirits.
After 25 years in the mining industry, I’d quit my job to pursue a career in flying. Getting my commercial pilot license in September 2022, I believed this was my calling.
Jacob was a passionate flyer, who always enjoyed the flights with me. “What does this button do ” “How does it work ” “What is the function ” There were so many questions he’d ask curiously. I wonder if he’ll be a pilot some day.
Watching the eclipse through our solar goggles (护目镜), we both were in amazement. After a bite of lunch, I did all my checks and refuelled the plane before flying us back.
Flying back into the air, I headed towards Jandakot Airport, which was right near our house.
More than half way, I spotted some smoke in the air. Realizing we were flying over Lancelin where there’d been some nearby bushfires, I didn’t think there was anything to panic about. Travelling south, we took in the lovely coastline. “This is beautiful!” Jacob exclaimed.
At around 5 p.m., just about five minutes to our destination, the engine suddenly decreased rapidly. Glancing over at my boy, I thought, “this is bad.” As I tried to bring the engine back to life, it worked only for a millisecond (毫秒), and then died again. “Okay mate, we’ve had an engine failure, I said calmly to Jacob. The plane was dropping and we went from 1800 feet to 1500 in just 20 seconds.
Looking forward, I could see Jandakot Airport about 15 kilometres ahead. “We aren’t going to make it,” I told myself. We only had another 60 seconds before making the decision. Looking down at Leighton Beach north of Fremantle below, I saw crowds of people on the beach.

My dad was always building and repairing things. When he was six, he sawed ( 锯 ) the legs of the dining-room table in half so he could sit at it more comfortably. By the time he was ten, he'd formed a bicycle from useless parts. He did the same in his 20s with a used car.
Building taught him the value of solving a problem with his own hands.
I was almost seven when one day Dad and I walked by a toy store window. There in the corner was the most unusual doll house I'd ever seen. Little egg-shaped windows were cut into it, with tiny balconies
“Oh, Daddy, ”I said, "isn't it beautiful Can you buy it for me as a birthday gift "
My father looked at the price —$100 —too much in those days. “I think we can't afford this house, "he joked. I was quite disappointed at the reply and angry. "But I will build one for you, ”Dad then added.
Though I had known about Dad's building skills, I cast a doubtful eye on him and fell into complete silence
Days later, after the doll house was almost forgotten, Dad, despite all the unfinished projects at home, started making one for me. Night after night, Dad would come home from work very tired, yet he'd always find time to work on the doll house. He cut, sawed, painted, and did all that was necessary. In those days, the small yard was occupied by various instruments that Dad needed and things that Dad produced for later use. Our ears had got used to all the noise. Every morning, I was greeted by something new that Dad had made the previous night. I was so excited. Dad even added a tiny path to the front door.
The doll house was the greatest gift a child could ask for and it kept me company for over ten years.

As The Jungle Book song Bear Necessities goes, "forget about your worries and your conflict” can be a little bit difficult when you find yourself face to face with a real bear.
Bears are common in the Northern Hemisphere. As human habitats stretch toward the wilderness, more and more animals cross their paths with those of humans. This can lead to dangerous encounters especially when precautions are not in place. In these situations, keeping your distance is still the best advice.
According to the National Park Service, one should also remain calm as bears, more often than not, are not really willing to attack you. Once in a standoff(对峙) , avoid making sudden moves or loud noises as these can trigger aggression. 7-year-old Huxley did exactly what he was told when he encountered a massive bear.
It was a Sunny morning. Huxley was wandering on his way home when a big hulking(笨 重的)figure emerges from behind him. A hurried glance backward, he knew it was a black bear. The bear approached cautiously at first, probably sizing up the figure in front of him. A second later, perhaps judging that Huxley was no match for it, the bear burst into a full sprint (冲刺)and ran its way toward the boy.
At first, Huxley was really frightened. However, he knew it was impossible to run or fight with the big beast. In the moment of crisis, he remembered his mother reminds him regularly about these possible encounters. She tells him that if Huxley finds himself face to face with a bear and there are no adults around, he should remain calm.
Huxley calmed down at thinking of this. He stared at the bear down without any movement. This might have been the reason why the young bear stopped dead in its tracks. They faced each other motionless, and there was only a foot distance between them.

As Amy walked home from school one afternoon, she saw images of symmetry (对称) all around her: in the faces of people, in the buildings she passed, and in the cars that went by. Even the autumn leaves that covered the sidewalk. A butterfly landed on a branch above her, and Amy suddenly stopped. She held her breath and smiled, watching as it opened and closed its perfectly symmetrical wings.
All that month, Amy’s class had been studying different forms of symmetry, and Amy was deeply attracted. They’d observed the mirror symmetry of violins and the rotational symmetry of starfish. They’d even studied symmetry using a microscope and recorded the beauty with a phone camera. Now Mr. Garcia, their science teacher, had given them their final assignment: to find the most beautiful example of symmetry and give a report to the class on it.
“The most beautiful example of symmetry. What on earth could that be ” Amy asked herself. She finally decided to use her microscope to find one. Amy spent hours in the garden on the examination of cells, pieces of rock, and drops of pond water. Although she was amazed by what she saw, none was truly beautiful.
“What are you bringing to class ” Amy asked her friend Cathy on the bus ride to school. “A model airplane,” replied Cathy proudly. “And my brother Mathew is bringing his guitar.” Those things are nice, thought Amy, but there must be something more beautiful.
That evening, she stayed with her microscope until her father called out, “Get inside, Amy. It’s freezing outside. The weather forecast says it’s going to snow.”
Amy’s heart sank. There would be fewer things to study under the microscope. Snow would cover the area like a blanket, hiding everything from sight. Her assignment was due in just a few days. Amy began to feel panic as she was packing up her microscope. Then she caught sight of something white blown onto the stage of her microscope. Yes! The snowflake (雪花)! She looked through the microscope and was amazed by its beauty.

I was working as a supervisor in a small, rural hospital on a bitter cold Midwestern winter in 1992. I wasn’t even supposed to be working the evening shift, but had agreed to swap with a colleague who needed the night off. Among my many duties was to assist in the emergency room (ER) if our ER nurse needed help. Suddenly, my pager (寻呼机) echoed down the hallway that quiet evening.
“I need your help now,” a nurse in ER said urgently. “We have an ambulance out on a little boy. Not many details, but it doesn’t sound good. He was found outside in a snow bank, and the first responders have started CPR.” My heart sank. It was thirty degrees below zero with windchill. The child didn’t have a chance.
I entered the emergency room. The ambulance was just pulling up, and when the gurney (轮床) rolled into the ER it was met with dead silence. CPR was in progress. The blond boy lay lifeless and pale with little hands frozen so solid. Because of the circumstances, we were obligated to continue CPR until his core body temperature was raised. No one in the room seemed to hold any hope of bringing back this little boy.
The next hour passed quickly as many ways were conducted to warm him up. I stood silently over him, tears running down my cheeks, as I prayed silently for him and his family. I couldn’t even help understanding the pain his parents were experiencing.
He was the same age as my little boy, with the same beautiful blue eyes and blond hair. I thought of how much I loved my son and tried to remember the last time I told him I loved him so. What if he died tonight Would he die knowing how much I loved him I realized, watching a group of doctors and nurses desperately trying to do the impossible, that I hadn’t even hugged him before leaving for work. And I deeply regretted that now.

【答案】
But thankfully there were not many in the water behind the waves. With the wind behind me, I turned the plane 180 degrees, with the nose as high as I could, so we wouldn’t be turned over when we hit the water. “Mum, should I unlock the door ” Jacob asked, as the aircraft quickly neared the ocean. “Yes!” I said, “It would be hard to open while under water.” Then the plane violently hit the water and came to a sudden stop. I couldn’t believe that, in just two minutes from the engine failing, we’d landed into the sea! We unfastened our safety belts, jumped into the sea and swam towards the shore.
On the beach, I hugged my boy, thrilled. I couldn’t have done it without him — my cool, calm boy who helped me land the plane safely. Kind strangers wrapped us both in towels and blankets before medical workers checked us over when they arrived soon after. Returning home, I was very upset about saying goodbye to my beloved plane, which had fully sunk to the bottom of the sea. Just three days after the incident, I had a training flight again. Up in the air, I didn’t feel feared at all, but so calm in my happy place above the clouds. The plane going down was a low, but I’ll always reach for the sky.

Then a miracle occurred. The little boy’s heart began to beat. Slowly at first and then more steadily. In ten minutes, his color turned a beautiful shade of pink and his pupils became reactive. All doctors and nurses present were wild with delight. And relief swept over my body and tears streamed down my face. I was in awe knowing I had received a very special invitation to witness a miracle. When I told the good news to his parents, they were choked with tears and couldn’t wait to see their son.
Watching the scene, I made a promise to myself that night. A promise to never again let a day go by when I didn’t hug my son and tell him that I loved him. He would never leave this Earth without knowing how much I loved him. It no longer mattered if he returned my love or if he pushed me away. I just wanted him to be healthy and grow up in an environment surrounded by love. In the months and years that followed, I kept my promise. He has done very well and is today a very happy, loving little boy.
