More and more English-educated Chinese Singaporean parents are realising the importance for their children to be not only good at the all-important English language, but also at Chinese. China has become a great political and economic superpower and they want their children to become bilingual.
It is common knowledge that,to master any language, especially one’s mother tongue, one must begin from childhood. But there are challenges and barriers for children of English-speaking homes to succeed in their journey towards bilingualism.
Take my family as an example. While my wife and I are products of English education,we had some foundation in Chinese which we kept up in our working life. But the language of communication in our home is mainly English.
We are glad that our three children had between 8 and 11 years’ Chinese schooling before switching over to English schools. Their foundation in Chinese has become an advantage in their adult life. They can hold their own in the spoken language, but would find it hard to write a business letter in Chinese for lack of usage.
We have a grandson who will be two years old shortly. His parents have given us the unenviable(艰难的) task of making him bilingual. It is a very tough assignment, as we are with him only a couple of hours on most days. For the rest of the time, he is being surrounded by English sounds by his busy parents.
Fortunately, our perseverance is paying off. After eight months, he has been used to hearing Chinese sounds, and even he can now quite comfortably identify common everyday objects in Chinese.
( )1.Why is it becoming necessary for some Chinese Singaporean children to learn Chinese
A.Because most of the Singaporeans come from China.
B.Because their parents are missing their motherland.
C.Because China has become a great political and economic superpower.
D.Because Chinese is the official language in the UN.
( )2.The underlined word “bilingual” in Paragraph 1 probably means “________”.
A.a person who knows English
B.a person who knows Chinese
C.a person who knows only one language
D.a person who knows two languages
( )3.The author uses the example of teaching his grandson mainly to prove that ________.
A.there are challenges for children of English-speaking homes to learn Chinese
B.his foundation in Chinese is a big advantage in teaching his grandson
C.he is quite good at teaching small children Chinese
D.learning Chinese is very popular in Singapore
( )4.We learn from the passage that ________.
A.all the children in Singapore need to learn Chinese
B.understanding Chinese is becoming an advantage in Singapore
C.the author’s children know nothing about Chinese
D.the author feels it easy to teach others Chinese

(2023四川成都高一下学期期末)As a child, I was proud of my southern origin. My own voice reflected my family’s past and present-part northern Mississippi, part Tennessee, all southern. There was no sound I loved more than my grandmother’s accent: thick, sweet, warm.
While growing up, I began to realise outside of our region, southerners were often dismissed as uncultured and ignorant. I was ready to leave behind my tiny town in West Tennessee, starting a new life and jumping at big chances in some far-off cities. In that embarrassing space between “teen” and “adult”, my accent was a symbol of everything I thought I hated about my life in the rural South. I feared it would disqualify me from being a noted magazine writer. I would have to talk less “country”.So I killed a piece of myself. I’m ashamed of it, but I’m more ashamed that I tried to kill that part of someone else — change Emily’s accent.
I met Emily in college. She was determined to work for the student newspaper, which was where I spent most of my waking hours, and we became friends. She, unlike me, accepted her roots. Early in our friendship, her mother asked where I was from, assuming it was somewhere up north. Then I felt my efforts paid off and even wanted to ignore the mistake.
Emily is two years younger and she cared about my opinion. I advised her to be more like me and hide her signature Manchester accent. I stressed that throughout our college years, often by making fun of her vowel(元音) sounds. I told myself I was helping her achieve her dream of working as a reporter. Now, I see that it was actually about justifying my hiding part of myself.
Grandma Carolyn used to tell me, “Girl, don’t forget where you come from. ” Now I truly understand that. Many things have faded from memory, but this sticks in my mind with uncomfortable clarity. Now that I am grown and have left the South, it’s important to me.
( )1.What made the author want to leave her hometown
A.Appeal of convenience in cities.
B.Her dream of becoming a writer.
C.Outside prejudice against southerners.
D.Her desire for the northern accent.
( )2.How did the author feel about the mistake of Emily’s mother
A.Upset. B.Pleased.
C.Ashamed. D.Surprised.
( )3.Why on earth did the author try to change Emily’s accent
A.To prove herself right. B.To help Emily be a reporter.
C.To make herself influential. D.To protect Emily’s self-dignity.
( )4.What message does the text want to convey
A.Stay true to your roots. B.Never do things by halves.
C.Hold on to your dreams. D.Never judge a person by his accent.
根据第二段中的“While growing up, I began to realise outside of our region, southerners were often dismissed as uncultured and ignorant. I was ready to leave behind my tiny town in West Tennessee, starting a new life and jumping at big chances in some far-off cities(在成长过程中,我开始意识到,在我们的地区之外,南方人经常被认为是没有文化和无知的。我准备离开我在西田纳西州的小镇,开始新的生活,并在一些遥远的城市抓住大好机会). ”可知,作者决定离开自己的家乡是因为其他人认为南方人没文化、无知,即外部对南方人的偏见。故选C项。
2.B 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Early in our friendship, her mother asked where I was from, assuming it was somewhere up north. Then I felt my efforts paid off and even wanted to ignore the mistake(在我们成为朋友之初,她妈妈问我来自哪里,以为是北方的某个地方。然后我觉得我的努力得到了回报,甚至想忽略这个错误). ”可推知,当被Emily的妈妈误会来自北方时,作者是非常开心的。故选B项。
3.A 推理判断题。根据第二段中的“I feared it would…myself(我担心这会使我失去成为著名杂志作家的资格。我就得少说些’乡村’了。所以我抹杀了自己身份的一部分). ”,第三段中的“She was determined to work for the student newspaper, which was where I spent most of my waking hours(她决心为校报工作,而我醒着的大部分时间都在那里度过的). ”以及倒数第二段中的“I advised her to…achieve her dream of working as a reporter(我建议她更像我,隐藏她标志性的曼彻斯特口音。在我们的大学生活中,我经常通过取笑她的元音来强调这一点。我告诉自己,我是在帮她实现当记者的梦想). ”可知,作者通过改变自己的口音获得了在校报工作的机会。由此推知,作者努力改变Emily的口音是为了证明自己是对的,即改变南方口音就有可能获得好工作。故选A项。
通读全文,并结合第二段中的“I’m ashamed of it, but I’m more ashamed that I tried to kill that part of someone else — change Emily’s accent(我很惭愧,但我更惭愧的是我试图抹杀别人的那部分——改变Emily的口音). ”和最后一段中的“Grandma Carolyn used to tell me, ’Girl, don’t forget where you come from’(罗琳奶奶过去常对我说:’女孩,别忘了你来自哪里’). ”可知,文章想要传达的信息是:坚守本根。故选A项。

We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.
Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mum. Kind and caring, she always seemed to make people comfortable in her presence. For years, she was a volunteer in our community. I loved going to the local nursing home to help with her until I hit my preteen years. Suddenly, I was too caught up in my adolescent world to worry about helping others.
One particular summer day when I was twelve, Mum came into my room and told me to get up and meet her at the car. I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything Eventually, I made my way outside. I imagined the lake water cooling my skin. Annoyed, I climbed into the car and slammed the door shut. I sat in silence, too upset to make a conversation.
“Tasha, would you like to know where we are going?” Mum asked calmly.
“I guess…” I murmured under my breath.
“Sweetheart, we are going to a children’s shelter. I have been there before and I think it would benefit you, ” she explained.
I felt a knot slowly form in my stomach. How was I supposed to help there
When we reached the shelter, I was rather surprised. It was a large white Victorian home. As we approached the large front porch, wind bells played a calming tune while trees and blossoms welcomed us. Maybe this wasn’t going to be so bad.
Mum rang the doorbell. The door flew open and we were led to the front room, where all of the children were playing. Toys were spread out across the floor. I noticed a baby whose body was scarred with wounds. The majority of the children had noticeable physical scars(伤疤) such as cuts, scratches and burns. What a terrible life they had had before they moved here! My heart sank.

Across India, summers can be extreme. Temperatures outdoors can soar to 124F°(51℃), high enough to melt the surface of the streets.
Millions of urban lower-income families live in tiny, one-room houses crammed together. Such shacks have tin and asbestos(石棉的) roofs. These materials absorb the sun’s heat, rather than reflect it back into the atmosphere. Additionally, only a few trees grow between the jam-packed houses. Making matters worse is the residents’ poverty. Most households cannot afford to run air conditioners and coolers. All these factors make the inside of these tiny houses extremely hot. Under such conditions, residents find it difficult to live, let alone work. Productivity declines.
Social workers and scientists have realised that the quickest way to cool such houses is to change their roofs. That’s because the roof receives the most direct sunlight. Climate researchers came up with many strategies to produce cool roofs. One easy way was with paint. Light-coloured surfaces reflect more heat than darker ones, so roofs painted white would be cooler than those painted in any other colour. This wasn’t a new idea. In fact, Indians have traditionally whitewashed homes with chuna. The annual monsoon rains, though, wash the chuna away. Climate experts hoped that the white paints would last longer. Research findings revealed that painting alone could bring down the heat by up to 9F°(5℃).
Problems persist, though. While the paint is fairly cheap, poor people cannot afford it without financial help. In addition, the sunlight bouncing off white-topped roofs makes them too bright to look at. Residents usually use the roofs for drying wet clothes and vegetables, like chilies. But the glare from the whitened surfaces makes it tough for them to do these tasks. A third problem is that white-roofed buildings reflect the sun’s rays throughout the year. Ironically, this makes roofs too cool in regions where winters get extremely cold. And keeping warm is costly, too.
Despite these drawbacks, many households are supporters of cool roof initiatives. For most, the benefits of the roofs outweigh their flaws. Indeed, the white paint has given their lives a new light.
( )19.What is a factor contributing to Indian houses’ extreme heat
A.The building materials of the roofs.
B.Residents’ lack of green awareness.
C.The influence of the global economy.
D.There being no trees in the community.
( )20.Why is white paint a good choice according to Paragraph 3
A.It is effective. B.It is innovative.
C.It is replaceable. D.It is long-lasting.
( )21.What problem comes with white paint roofs
A.Their brightness will lead to colour blindness
B.The paint will become too expensive to afford.
C.It will be inconvenient to dry stuff on the roofs.
D.Residents’ living cost will be higher in summer.
( )22.What is the text mainly about
A.Light-coloured paints. B.A house-cooling strategy.
C.White-roofed buildings. D.An energy-saving initiative.
根据第二段中的“Such shacks have tin and asbestos(石棉的)roofs…All these factors make the inside of these tiny houses extremely hot(这样的棚屋有锡和石棉屋顶。这些材料吸收太阳的热量,而不是将其反射回大气层。此外,只有几棵树生长在拥挤的房屋之间。更糟糕的是当地居民的贫困。大多数家庭买不起空调和冷却器。所有这些因素使这些小房子的内部非常热). ”并结合选项可知,屋顶的建筑材料是导致印度房屋过热的因素之一。故选A项。
根据第三段中的“One easy way was with paint. Light-coloured surfaces reflect more heat than darker ones, so roofs painted white would be cooler than those painted in any other colour(一种简单的降温方法是给屋顶涂白油漆。浅色表面比深色表面反射更多的热量,所以涂成白色的屋顶会比其他颜色的屋顶更凉爽). ”可知,白油漆是一个好的选择是因为能反射更多的热量,更有效。故选A项。
根据第四段中的“Problems persist, though…makes it tough for them to do these tasks(不过,问题依然存在。虽然油漆相当便宜,但如果没有经济援助,穷人买不起。此外,阳光从白色屋顶上反射回来,使它们太亮了,让人看不见。居民们通常用屋顶来晾晒湿衣服和蔬菜,比如辣椒。但白化表面的强光让它们很难完成这些任务). ”可知,从白色屋顶上反射的光太亮,使人睁不开眼,这使得在屋顶上晾干东西很不方便。故选C项。
22.B 主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合第三段中的“Climate researchers came up with many strategies to produce cool roofs. One easy way was with paint(气候研究人员想出了许多制造凉爽屋顶的策略。一个简单的方法是用颜料). ”和最后一段“Despite these drawbacks…has given their lives a new light(尽管有这些缺点,许多家庭都是冷屋顶倡议的支持者。对大多数人来说,屋顶的好处大于缺点。事实上,白色的油漆给他们的生活带来了新的曙光). ”可知,本文主要介绍了用白油漆涂屋顶来降温的策略。故选B项。

If it had not been for Fan Jinshi and her team, the world cultural heritage at Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes in a remote Chinese desert might have long been destroyed by sand, weather and humans.
Born in Beijing and raised in Shanghai, Fan has spent half a century fighting an uphill battle to preserve the ancient Buddhist wall paintings at Dunhuang, in Northwest China’s Gansu Province. The 1,651-year-old Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes are a huge collection of Buddhist art — more than 2,000 buddha figures and 45,000 square metres of paintings spread among 735 caves. It is China’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Archaeologist Fan was sent to Dunhuang after graduation from Peking University in 1963.While in Dunhuang, a remote village in the desert then, Fan lived in an abandoned temple. At first, she did not even dare to go out to the toilet at night. To protect the treasures from sand and dampness, Fan and other workers put doors on the caves, planted trees and started monitoring temperature and humidity in the caves. They also controlled the number of visitors.
In the late 1990s, with tourism booming nationwide since national holidays were extended, the local government planned to go public with(公之于世) Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, but found Fan firmly in their way. “The heritage would have been destroyed if it had been listed,” she said.
Dunhuang Academy has now photographed and cataloged online all the sculptures and paintings. “Despite our efforts to minimise damage, we can’t completely stop them from being eroded. But the digital database will last. ”
Fan was grateful when her husband joined her in Dunhuang in 1986 after 19 years of separation. Her two sons grew up in Shanghai with their aunt. “I have not been a good mother or wife. With regard to my family, I’m full of guilt,” she said. Fan, 79, retired two years ago as the director of Dunhuang Academy but continues her efforts as a national political adviser.
( )23.Which of the following measures didn’t Fan Jinshi take to protect Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes
A.Opening Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes to the public extensively.
B.Planting trees and stopping the Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes being eroded.
C.Picturing and classifying all the sculptures and paintings online.
D.Putting doors on the caves and monitoring temperature and humidity.
( )24.What does the underlined phrase “in their way” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Going to a place. B.Being in favour of something.
C.Rejecting something. D.Giving in to something.
( )25.What kind of person do you think Fan is
A.Considerate and easy-going. B.Kind and intelligent.
C.Humorous and sweet. D.Devoted and persistent.
根据第三段中的“To protect the treasures from sand and dampness, Fan and other workers put doors on the caves, planted trees and started monitoring temperature and humidity in the caves. They also controlled the number of visitors. ”及第五段中的“Dunhuang Academy has now photographed and cataloged online all the sculptures and paintings. ”可知,为了保护敦煌莫高窟,樊锦诗和她的伙伴给洞穴装上门、植树、监测洞内温度和湿度、控制游客数量、在网上对所有的雕塑和绘画进行了拍照和编目。四个选项中,只有A项未提及。
24.C 词义猜测题。根据后句 “’The heritage would have been destroyed if it had been listed,’she said. ”可知,樊锦诗说:“如果这份遗产被列入名录,它早就被毁了。”由此可知,樊锦诗坚决反对当地政府将敦煌莫高窟公之于众的计划,故画线词“in their way”的意思是“反对某事”。
25.D 推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Fan has spent half a century fighting an uphill battle to preserve the ancient Buddhist wall paintings at Dunhuang…”及最后一段中的“I have not been a good mother or wife. With regard to my family, I’m full of guilt…”
