Text 1
M: Mom, help me. Ruby took my favorite hat and hid it in a shelf somewhere in the house.
W: Hey Ruby. Play nicely with Owen or I’ll have to split you two up.
Text 2
W: I’m looking for a place to rent a suit. My husband and I have some weddings to attend in the area, so I’m looking to rent for one or two months.
M: There’s a shop beside the car rental agency. There’s also one opposite the book shop.
Text 3
W: Somebody help! That individual took my bag and is running away! Can anyone run after him
M: Are you hurt, Madam Do not worry. I’ll catch him.
Text 4
W: Oh, I like your house. This is the latest style of decoration, isn’t it Very up-to-date.
M: Yes, I appreciate traditional homes, but that style wouldn’t work in a place like this.
W: Yes, you’re right. It’s more suited to historic places.
Text 5
W: We mainly prepare take-away burgers and sandwiches, but we’re getting requests to make larger and more diverse meals.
M: Great, I’ll help expand your menu. I am good at it. I used to work at a fancy restaurant.
W: Thanks. Then we can buy some fresh ingredients in the nearby supermarket.
Text 6
M: That cake was delicious. How come you never made one like that before
W: You didn’t eat the last piece, did you
M: Yes. Did I do something wrong
W: You certainly did. I was saving that piece for Grandma. It was her favourite type of cake and I made it especially for her.
M: Oh no, I’m so sorry. I had no idea.
W: I’ll just have to make another one for her. Luckily, it is not hard to do.
M: I feel terrible. I wouldn’t have touched it if I’d known.
W: It’s always best to ask before going ahead and eating something.
Text 7
W: All right, Jim. Since your phone is dead, you won’t have access to your maps. So, I’ll give you directions to help you get back to the hotel.
M: I’ve only been here a couple of times — I don’t know my way around! Plus, I still need to go to the post office now. Can I please borrow your phone
W: Sorry, Jim. I’ll need it for work. But don’t worry, the directions are simple. Walk out of my building and turn left. The post office is three streets down — it’s opposite the city library.
M: That’s easy enough. Where’s the metro station
W: You’ll see it on the corner of the street. Get on the D-Line train and take it four stops to Times Square Station.
M: And then
W: Change to line E there and go four more stops further.
Text 8
M: Shop owners have to find new ways to work in the modern world.
W: What do you mean
M: Well, a lot of people are working from home, so there are less people coming into their stores.
W: So shops need to create an online website and store.
M: Exactly. Do you know what else can be done
W: I have no idea.
M: Well, some people are changing their stores to other purposes.
W: What do you mean
M: Like the bookshop near the bank. It now has a cafe inside. And at weekends, they have live music.
W: So it has a number of different purposes.
M: Exactly.
W: What happens if a shop can’t serve more than one purpose Like a store that sells clothes
M: They just need to think outside the box. The sports store near the school has now opened a gym on the second floor.
W: That’s smart, so people buy sportswear and equipment and then use it.
Text 9
W: Have you ever had dreams that you can remember
M: Yes. It’s funny you should mention that. Most nights I dream about football. That’s what I dreamed about this Monday and Tuesday—but on Wednesday it was something completely different.
W: What was that
M: I dreamed I was an astronaut, landing on Mars.
W: That must have been fun.
M: It was, but it was also scary. I had to depend on all the technology created by scientists and computer people. I had to trust them, because my life depended on it.
W: And did you
M: Yes, that’s why I was there on Mars —but it was something I had never thought of before. I had to be sure they had done their jobs properly.
W: We have a science lesson this morning. You can tell the teacher about your dream.
M: Maybe. Now I can’t stop thinking what an important job scientists do.
W: That’s what I want to do for a living. I suppose you want to be an astronaut, do you
M: I did before I had that dream. Now I’m not so sure. It was certainly exciting, and it felt very real.
Text 10
W: We all know that seeing someone perform an act of kindness can warm your heart. It is a feeling most people have. But now scientists have proved that kindness really is infectious.
Here is what was done. Scientists first found 104 college students. They were then asked to watch videos. These videos showed either heroic acts of kindness or humorous situations. Their brain activity and heart rates were measured during the experiment.
The researchers got the results. When the students were viewing the heroic acts, activity in the nervous system reached to the highest level. When they were watching the amusing videos, there were no changes in their brain. “This is a really uncommon pattern,” said Dr. Sarina Saturn, a psychologist at Oregon State University. This may be because viewing a good action requires us to witness suffering, which brings a stress response and makes the sympathetic nervous system become active. Then, once we see the suffering reduced through an act of kindness, our heart feels calmed and the parasympathetic(副交感的)nervous system becomes active.2023年下学期期末考试试卷

Most parents are worried the first time they catch their kids out in a lie. According to child and teen psychiatrist Gayani DeSilva, lying can actually be a sign of healthy development in young children. “Kids lie for many reasons, and much of it is normal,” DeSilva says. “People are not born with the knowledge of communicating with others and getting their needs met. They’ll experiment with different communication styles and techniques until they find the ones that work best for them. Lying is one of those techniques.”
As kids get older, they become more aware of how their actions affect others, and many will lie less frequently. In spite of this, parents still need to lead their kids to form a habit of not lying. According to DeSilva, when children lie, look at them directly and ask what they need. After they tell you, gently remind them that telling you directly will be more effective than lying.
It’s also a good idea to model the behavior you want to see in your kids. In other words, don’t lie to your children. This will set you and your children on a course of open communication and trust.
In some cases, lying is a sign of a deeper issue. A child who is neglected will lie more than a child who has attentive and responsive parents. He’s not sure whether he’s loved. He may lie to please others. The same goes for a child who has experienced something unpleasant. He may lie to try to hide his shame, avoid admitting his needs, or to control his surroundings to ensure his safety.
By paying attention to the reasons behind a lie, parents can figure out what need to be done. For example, while Jack might lie about completing his homework in order to play video games, he also might be trying to avoid negative feelings connected with school work, and this is just where parents should start, says therapist Gideon Javna.
24.What can be inferred about lying from DeSilva’s words
A.It has certain benefits for the healthy growth of kids.
B.It shows the understanding between kids and parents.
C.It can be an effective means of communication for kids.
D.It is so common for kids that parents can completely ignore it.
25.How can parents get their children to tell the truth
A.By pretending to trust them at first.
B.By encouraging them to admit their needs.
C.By telling them directly the harm of lying.
D.By punishing them for their lying in a safe way.
26.The author mentioned the two kids in Paragraph 4 to show _____________.
A.It’s common for children to lie
B.It’s important to be a generous parent
C.lying can damage family relationships
D.lying is a reflection of one’s mental trouble
27.What should Jack’s parents do according to Javna
A.Ask him to avoid playing video games.
B.Turn his attention to other positive things.
C.Give him a second chance to finish homework.
D.Listen to and help solve his problem related to school work.

Historically, France as a nation has been predominantly Roman Catholic. These days, however,France is largely secular(世俗的)in terms of its culture, with many of its citizens having long turned their backs on traditional forms of religion. With this reality in mind,we may wonder why a church-specifically Notre-Dame de Paris(巴黎圣母院)sitting on the small island in the middle of the river Seine-remains so deeply rooted in the hearts of Parisians.
When a fire caused great damage to Notre-Dame on April 15th, 2019,Parisians were horrified and shocked to see the destruction of their beloved “lady” (Notre dame being the French word for “our lady”). Sure enough, from the moment the fire was eventually put out, the French government began making plans for its reconstruction. So, given France’s secularism, what is it that makes Notre-Dame, a religious building, so beloved
Notre-Dame’s popularity partially arises from the publication of The Hunch back of Notre-Dame by Victor Hugo(雨果)in the 19th century. However, construction on the Notre-Dame de Paris began back in 1163 and took more than 100 years to complete. Since its completion, the Gothic cathedral(哥特式大教堂)has been forced to move with the times on several occasions including two World Wars. Despite being attacked during times of political and religious upheaval(动乱), it has continued to stand tall throughout the centuries. The fact that it was effectively turned into a food storage space for a few years during the French Revolution shows the incredible ability of the cathedral to adapt to any situation in order to ensure its survival.
It is clear that for the people of Paris, it is part of the architecture of the French capital and, therefore, an important background in a city they believe to be the cultural center of the world. Though consumed by flames just a few years ago, Notre-Dame will undoubtedly recover and live on.
28.What message do the first two paragraphs convey
A.Notre-Dame’s unique status in France. B.France’s key role in world culture.
C.Severe damage done to Notre-Dame. D.Highlight of French architecture.
29.What do we know about Notre-Dame from the passage
A.Its name was taken from Victor Hugo’s work.
B.Its construction was finished in the 1200s.
C.It was destroyed in the two World Wars.
D.It once served as a shelter for the homeless.
30.What is the author’s attitude towards the recovery of Notre-Dame
A.Doubtful. B.Uncertain. C.Confident. D.Indifferent.
31.What can be a suitable title of the text
A.Notre-Dame- So Much More Than Just a Church.
B.Notre-Dame-The Passing Glory Never Coming Back.
C.Notre-Dame-World-Class Cathedral in Ruins.
D.Notre-Dame-Making its Way Back to the Top.
D
People consistently underestimate how much others in their social circle might appreciate an unexpected phone call, text or email just to say hello, and the more surprising the connection, the greater the appreciation, according to a new study.
In the study, researchers from the University of Pittsburgh conducted some experiments involving more than 5, 900 participants. In one experiment, half of the participants were asked to recall the last time they reached out to someone in their social circle after a prolonged (长期的) period of not interacting with them. The rest were asked to recall a similar situation where someone reached out to them. Participants were then asked to indicate on a 7-point scale how much either they or the person they reached out to appreciated. People who recalled reaching out thought the gesture was significantly less appreciated than those who recalled receiving a communication.
In other experiments, participants sent a short note, or a small gift, to someone in their social circle with whom they had not interacted in a while. Similar to the previous experiment, participants who initiated (发起) contact were asked to rate on a 7-point scale the extent to which they thought the recipient would appreciate or feel grateful for the contact. After the notes or gifts were sent, researchers also asked the recipients to rate their appreciation.
Across all experiments, those who initiated the communication significantly underestimated the extent to which recipients would appreciate the act of reaching out. Besides, the researchers found that people receiving the communication placed greater focus than those initiating the communication on the surprise element, and this heightened focus on surprise was associated with higher appreciation. “We also found that people underestimated others’ appreciation to a greater extent when the communication was more surprising, as opposed to part of a regular communication pattern, or the social ties between the two participants were weak,” added lead author Peggy Liu.
Initiating social contact after a prolonged period of disconnection can be daunting because people worry about how such a gesture might be received. But these findings suggest that their hesitations may be unnecessary, as others are likely to appreciate being reached out to more than people think.
32.How did the researchers conduct the experiments
A.By listing arguments. B.By giving examples.
C.By making assumptions. D.By making comparisons.
33.According to paragraph 3, what were the participants asked to do
A.To rank their appreciation. B.To make an unexpected call.
C.To express their thoughts. D.To do the same experiments.
34.Based on the research, who would show higher appreciation
A.One receiving a gift of great value. B.One often contacted by a close friend.
C.One connected quite unexpectedly. D.One making regular contacts with others.
35.What does the underlined word “daunting” in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Unbearable. B.Discouraging. C.Illogical. D.Immoral.

It was a pleasant New Year’s morning. Edward rose, washed and dressed himself in a hurry, because he wanted to be the first to wish everybody a happy New Year.
He looked in every room and shouted out the words of welcome. He ran into the street to repeat them to those he might meet. The festive atmosphere swept up the neighborhood.
When he came back, his father gave him two bright new silver dollars. His face lit up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore.
It was freezing and dry outside and the wind blew strongly. However, Edward left the house with a light heart, intending to buy the books.
As he ran down the street, he saw a poor German family, the father, mother and three children trembling with cold. “I wish you a happy New Year,” said Edward, as he was cheerfully passing by. The man shook his head, saying nothing. “I wish you a happy New Year,” repeated Edward, feeling a little puzzled. The man shook his head again, for he couldn’t understand or speak the language. “You do not belong to this country, do you ” asked Edward. Still the man said nothing, but this time he pointed to his mouth and to his children, as if to say, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.” Edward quickly understood that these people were in trouble. The family were in great need of help. At that moment, he took out his dollars, looked at them over and over, thinking for a short while and finally gave one to the man and the other to his wife.
How their eyes sparkled with gratitude! They said something in their language, which meant, “We thank you a thousand times and will remember you in our prayers.”
Without a word, Edward made his way home, delighted.
Paragraph 1:
When Edward came home, his father asked him what books he had bought.

66.One possible version:
Recently our class had a discussion about whether we should help strangers. Different students have different opinions.
Some think we should try to help strangers. Helping others is a virtue, and helping others is helping ourselves. We may come across some trouble and need others’ help some day. If nobody is willing to help us just because we are strangers to them, it’s hard to imagine what our world will be like. However, some are afraid that helping others can sometimes bring us trouble. Sometimes we are just misunderstood.
In my opinion, we should try our best to help others when they are in need of help, but we should also protect ourselves from getting into trouble. If everyone tries a little kindness, our world will be full of love.
67. One possible version:
When Edward came home, his father asked him what books he had bought. He lowered his head but quickly looked up. “I have bought no books,” said he, “because I gave the new silver dollars to some people, who seemed to be very hungry. I think they were in great need of help and I can wait for my books till next New Year. Oh, if only you had seen how glad they were to receive the money!”
“My dear boy, I saw you give the money to the poor German family,” said the father. “Actually, it was a large sum for a little boy to give cheerfully. I am so proud of you, my boy! Here is a whole bundle of books. I give them to you, more as a reward for your goodness of heart than as a New Year’s gift. Be thus ever ready to help the poor and anybody who is in trouble and every year of your life will be to you a happy New Year.”

根据第一段中DeSilva说的话““Kids lie for many reasons, and much of it is normal,” DeSilva says. “People are not born with the knowledge of communicating with others and getting their needs met. They’ll experiment with different communication styles and techniques until they find the ones that work best for them. Lying is one of those techniques.”(“孩子撒谎有很多原因,其中大部分是正常的,”DeSilva说:“人们并非生来就具有与他人沟通和满足自己需求的知识。他们会尝试不同的交流方式和技巧直到他们找到最适合自己的。撒谎就是其中的一项技能”)”可知,孩子们不是一出生就懂得交流的技巧,撒谎只不过是他们在经过尝试后,认为比较有效的一种沟通方法。故选C。
25.推理判断题。根据第二段“According to DeSilva, when children lie, look at them directly and ask what they need. After they tell you, gently remind them that telling you directly will be more effective than lying.(根据DeSilva的话,当孩子撒谎时,直接看着他们并问他们需要什么。在他们告诉你后,温柔地告诉他们,直接讲实话比撒谎更有效)”可知,家长要鼓励孩子承认自己的需求。故选B。
26.推理判断题。根据第四段第一句“In some cases, lying is a sign of a deeper issue.(某些情况里,撒谎是更深层次问题的标志)”,接着举了两个小孩的例子,可知,举这两个小孩的例子是为了说明撒谎反映了更深层次的问题——人们在精神上的问题。故选D。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段“By paying attention to the reasons behind a lie, parents can figure out what need to be done. For example, while Jack might lie about completing his homework in order to play video games, he also might be trying to avoid negative feelings connected with school work, and this is just where parents should start, says therapist Gideon Javna.(通过关注撒谎背后的原因,父母可以弄明白需要做些什么。例如,当杰克撒谎说完成了作业是为了玩游戏时,其实他也可能试图避免与学业有关的负面情绪,这正是家长应该介入的地方,治疗师Gideon Javna说)”可知,根据Gideon Javna的说法,杰克的父母应该先倾听孩子的问题,并帮助解决作业方面的问题。故选D。

【导语】本文是说明文。介绍了巴黎圣母院之所以受欢迎的原因。
28.推理判断题。根据第一段“With this reality in mind,we may wonder why a church-specifically Notre-Dame de Paris(巴黎圣母院)sitting on the small island in the middle of the river Seine-remains so deeply rooted in the hearts of Parisians.(考虑到这一现实,我们可能会想知道,为什么一座教堂——特别是巴黎圣母院——坐落在塞纳河中央的小岛上——仍然深深扎根于巴黎人的心中)”以及第二段“When a fire caused great damage to Notre-Dame on April 15th, 2019,Parisians were horrified and shocked to see the destruction of their beloved “lady” (Notre dame being the French word for “our lady”). Sure enough, from the moment the fire was eventually put out, the French government began making plans for its reconstruction. So, given France’s secularism, what is it that makes Notre-Dame, a religious building, so beloved (2019年4月15日,巴黎圣母院发生火灾,造成巨大损失,巴黎人震惊地看到他们心爱的“夫人”(Notre dame是法语“我们的夫人”的意思)被毁。果然,从大火最终被扑灭的那一刻起,法国政府就开始制定重建计划。那么,考虑到法国的世俗主义,是什么让圣母院这座宗教建筑如此受人喜爱呢?)”可知,前两段传达了巴黎圣母院在法国的独特地位。故选A项。
根据第三段“However, construction on the Notre-Dame de Paris began back in 1163 and took more than 100 years to complete.(然而,巴黎圣母院的建设早在1163年就开始了,花了100多年才完成)”可知,它的建造完成于12世纪。故选B项。
根据最后一段“It is clear that for the people of Paris, it is part of the architecture of the French capital and, therefore, an important background in a city they believe to be the cultural center of the world. Though consumed by flames just a few years ago, Notre-Dame will undoubtedly recover and live on.(很明显,对于巴黎人来说,它是法国首都建筑的一部分,因此,它是他们认为是世界文化中心的城市的重要背景。尽管几年前还被大火烧毁,但毫无疑问,圣母院将恢复元气,并继续存在下去)”可知,作者认为圣母院将恢复元气,并继续存在下去,所以他对巴黎圣母院的修复是有自信心的。故选C项。
31.主旨大意题。根据第二段“So, given France’s secularism, what is it that makes Notre-Dame, a religious building, so beloved (那么,考虑到法国的世俗主义,是什么让圣母院这座宗教建筑如此受人喜爱呢?)”以及第三段“Since its completion, the Gothic cathedral(哥特式大教堂)has been forced to move with the times on several occasions including two World Wars. Despite being attacked during times of political and religious upheaval(动乱),it has continued to stand tall throughout the centuries. The fact that it was effectively turned into a food storage space for a few years during the French Revolution shows the incredible ability of the cathedral to adapt to any situation in order to ensure its survival.(自建成以来,这座哥特式大教堂在包括两次世界大战在内的几个场合被迫与时俱进。

The rest were asked to recall a similar situation where someone reached out to them. Participants were then asked to indicate on a 7-point scale how much either they or the person they reached out to appreciated.( 在一项实验中,一半的参与者被要求回忆他们在长时间没有互动后最后一次联系社交圈里的人。

After the notes or gifts were sent, researchers also asked the recipients to rate their appreciation. 故选A。
根据第四段中的“Besides, the researchers found that people receiving the communication placed greater focus than those initiating the communication on the surprise element, and this heightened focus on surprise was associated with higher appreciation. (此外,研究人员发现,接受交流的人比发起交流的人更关注惊喜元素,而这种对惊喜的高度关注与更高的赞赏有关)”可推知,根据研究,一个被联系的人会出乎意料地表现出更高的赞赏。故选C。
35.词句猜测题。根据划线词下文“because people worry about how such a gesture might be received. (因为人们担心这样的姿态会如何被接受)”可知,在长时间断开联系后,开始社交接触可能会令人生畏。由此推知,划线词daunting与discouraging(令人气馁的)意思接近。故选B。
