一、阅读理解
Medical artificial intelligence (AI) can perform with expert-level accuracy and deliver cost- effective care. IBM's Watson diagnoses (诊断) heart disease better than cardiologists (心脏病专家) do. Chatbots give better medical advice to patients in place of nurses. Some forecast that medical AI will enter 90% of hospitals and replace as much as 80% of what doctors currently do. Yet, as our recent research suggests, patients show a strong resistance to medical AI.
The reason, we found, is not the belief that AI provides lower care. Nor is it that patients think that AI is more costly or less informative. Rather, resistance to medical AI seems to come from a belief that AI does not take into account one's specific circumstances. People view themselves as unique. By contrast, they think medical care delivered by AI providers is suited to treat an average patient but unsuitable to account for the unique circumstances that apply to an individual. No wonder that medical AI providers are given a cold welcome.
There are a number of steps that care providers can take to overcome patients' resistance to medical AI. For example, if an AI provider is capable of tailoring its recommendation for whether to have a surgery to each patient's unique characteristics and medical history, patients would be likely to follow the treatment recommendations of the AI provider. In addition, health care providers could also deliver individualized health care by explaining how the algorithms (算法) work and sharing patients' reviews with the media. Having a physician confirm the recommendation of an AI provider should make people more willing to accept AI-based care. People are comfortable using medical AI if a physician remains in charge of the ultimate decision.
AI-based health care technologies are being developed and employed at an impressive rate, providing better medical services for the patients. But harnessing the full potential of them will require that we first overcome patients' doubt of having an algorithm, rather than a person making decisions about their care.

With nearly a quarter of global greenhouse gas coming from all types of transportation, can we keep ourselves off gas-powered vehicles to avoid the worst effects As more governments push for urgent action on climate change, quite a few companies are betting their future—that millions of consumers are finally ready for electric-powered vehicles. Modern battery-powered cars are selling fast and zero-emission(排放) planes are coming. These changes, both leading to a more sustainable future, are reinventing how we get from here to there.
Cars and trucks have undergone their greatest improvement since the automobile's existence more than a century ago. Almost overnight, the era of the electric car has arrived. Electricity has the advantage that it works without smell and with less noise. Global annual sales of electric vehicles are expected to soar from just over 3 million today to 14 million by2025. Just a month after Ford unveiled an electric version of the popular F-150, customers had reserved more than 100,000 of them. The price is about $10,000 above the gas-powered one, but Ford says the electric model will cost much less to maintain. Everything creating a green revolution on the ground is of limited help in the sky for the time being.
High-storage batteries are useless at present when it comes to the technological challenge of launching a few hundred people into the sky and carrying them thousands of miles. No battery yet invented can power, say, a Boeing 747 from New York to London. Promising improvements, however, do add up. Developments with zero-emission, battery-powered electric engines are already happening in commercial flights, involving trips of limited duration and distance. Airlines specializing in short journeys with small planes will lead the way to electric flights.
Our planet's health depends on zeroing out carbon dioxide emissions by 2050, and yet, by the timetable needed to address the climate challenge, the shift away from gas-powered vehicles remains far too slow. Nevertheless, the train has left the station. Someday, electric-powered transportation will be as common

B.Green transportation is on its way.
C.The electric train is running regularly.
D.The gas-powered train has become the past.
Technology has revolutionized (使革命化) the way we work in many ways. One of the most significant changes has been the shift towards remote and flexible work. With the rise of internet and cloud-based software, workers are no longer tied to a physical office and can work from anywhere with an internet connection. This has allowed for greater flexibility and work-life balance, as well as reduced commuting (通勤) time and costs.
Another major change is the increasing use of automation and artificial intelligence in the workplace. This has the potential to increase efficiency and productivity, as well as reduce the need for certain types of work. However, it also raises concerns about job displacement and the need for workers to adapt to new technologies.
Finally, technology has greatly expanded the types of jobs available. With the rise of the gig (临时工) economy and freelance (自由职业者) work, workers can now find opportunities in areas such as graphic design (平面设计), copywriting (文案撰写), and social media management. This has created opportunities for individuals to work in areas that were previously inaccessible or did not exist.
9.What is the shift in the way we work brought about by technology
A. Flexible and remote work. B. Tying people to a physical office.
C. Increased commuting and travel. D. Higher costs and lower productivity.
10.What is the impact of internet and cloud-based software on the way we work

D. Technology has increased commuting time and costs.
Penguins are survivors. Modern species of the adorable birds resist freezing temperatures or dive deep in swift currents. In fact, penguins have been doing their adorable thing for millions of years. Prehistoric penguin species date back to the days of the dinosaurs. A team of researchers in New Zealand have discovered one more member of the ancient family, a tiny and distinctly precious species newly known as Eudyptula wilsonae. Its name, which comes from a New Zealand respected seabird researcher Kerry-Jayne Wilson MNZM, means Wilson's little penguin. Explaining in their recent paper, the researchers detail how the examination of small fossilized skulls(颅骨) led to the classification of this cute creature who lived 50 million years ago.
Two fossils were discovered on New Zealand's North Island. Only the skulls are still in existence, and they are slightly narrower than those of modern little penguins which currently frolic(嬉戏) along the island's coasts. From the one young and one adult skull, the researchers determined it was a new species. They likely stood just about a foot tall and weighed2 pounds, much like the modern penguins. In fact, the new species may bea late Pliocene ancestor of the modern birds.
"This is important when thinking about the origins of these penguins, the evolution of the seabird diversity of New Zealand and the dynamic environment in which they live," co-author Daniel Thomas said in a statement. "For one thing, the climate has changed a lot over this time, and this lineage has been robust(强健的) to those changes." In fact, recent warming has resulted in new challenges for modern little penguins-many starved to death in 2022 as fish moved to cooler waters beyond the diving abilities of the penguins.
Ancient penguins' ability to survive when temperatures were warmer in their own time might have modern applications. As cute as these fossilized small penguins are, the modern variety needs humans to look beyond their sweet nature to recognize the complexity of their survival.
13.What is Eudyptula wilsonae's name related to
A. A site. B. A shape.
C. A person. D. Penguin's appearance.
14.What is the feature of the new species

15.What can be inferred from the third paragraph
A. Thomas attached insufficient importance to the finding.
B. The living environment of penguins is worsening.
C. The changing climate has little effect on penguins.
D. Many fish died due to changes in water temperature.
16.Where is the text most likely from
A. An essay from a scientific magazine. B. An introduction to a book.
C.A guidebook to biology research. D. A review of penguins' evolution.
“Pale Moon rains. Red Moon blows. White Moon neither rains nor snows.” For generations, people have watched the Moon for signs of changes in the weather. The Moon does, in fact, affect the Earth’s climate and weather patterns in different ways.
The most obvious effect the Moon has on the Earth can be seen in the ocean tides. A world without tides would have very different weather systems. Tides are one factor that influences the movement of ocean currents, which move warm or cool water around the Earth. Thus, the water temperature changes. Warm ocean currents bring warmer and wetter weather, while cold ocean currents bring colder and drier weather.
The Moon is also thought to affect polar temperatures and contribute to fluctuations in the amount of Arctic ice. Tidal forces (潮汐力) act to break up ice sheets and change ocean heat flows, changing the amount of ice in the Arctic Ocean. Satellite measurements have shown that the poles are 0.55℃ warmer during a full Moon.
The Moon’s influence, sometimes slight and sometimes strong, has had an important impact on life on Earth. Some scientists argue that it is the Moon that made life possible in the first place. The Moon makes the Earth move steadily as it is spinning (自转), helping to give us a steady climate. Without it, the Earth would lose balance. The Moon is our closest friend, without which the Earth would be a very lonely place.
17.Why do people watch the Moon according to Paragraph 1
A. To appreciate the moon. B. To record weather patterns.
C. To prepare for extreme weather. D. To observe signs of weather changes
18.What impact does the Moon have on the Earth
A. It influences water temperature B. It makes weather hard to predict
C. It turns the earth colder and drier. D. It changes the size of ocean currents.
19.What does the underlined word “fluctuations” mean
A. Change. B. Increase. C. Flow. D. Measurement.
20.What is the best title for the passage
A. Changes of Ocean Heat Flows. B. Patterns of the Earth’s Climate.
C. Causes of Changes in Polar Weather. D. Effects of the Moon on Global Weather
Osa is an athletic yet stubborn 62-pound German shepherd. The six-year-old dog has mastered the art of sniffing(嗅,闻) out cancer and is key to a research project that has the potential to change oncology(肿瘤学).
Osa is part of an ambitious effort launched five years ago at the University of Pennsylvania that aims to develop one of the most powerful scent-detection(气味探测) machines in the world: the canine nose. She is able to distinguish between blood samples (样本) taken from cancer patients and healthy people simply by sniffing them.
In fact, Osa is one of five cancer-detection dogs trained by Annemarie DeAngelo and her workmates at the university’s Penn Vet Working Dog Centre. The most important goal is to develop an “electronic sniffer” that can have similar cancer-sniffing superpowers of Osa and her pals. Osa arrived at the Penn Vet Working Dog Centre from a breeder at two months of age. Ever since, she has taken training. The process is demanding, challenging and repeated until the dog has mastered the most basic task of all. Finally, she has succeeded in sniffing out cancer. To change Osa’s outstanding abilities into an electronic nose, researchers use a similar way to train the machine.
An electronic nose prototype(原型,模型) has been built, and it’s successful in sniffing out cancer 90 to 95 percent of the time. That team has also correctly detected different types of cancer, and is building a cancer-detecting device for the National Institutes of Health. One aim is to be able to distinguish between early-stage and late-stage cancer. “It would be amazing to identify people at an early stage and really have an effect on saving lives,” says a researcher. “The dogs have been able to detect that. With that ability, a blood test could be sent to a central lab, or ideally performed in a doctor’s office, making some hidden cancers a thing of the past. We expect that the cancer-sniffer device will be completed soon.
21.What can we learn about Osa from the first two paragraphs
A. She uses nose to detect the presence of cancer.
B. She can change the course of the oncology.
C. She was too stubborn to join the research.
D. She used to be an athletic German shepherd.
22.Which of the following best describes the training according to Paragraph 3
A. Purposeful. B. Boring. C. Strict. D. Endless.
23.What can we infer from the researcher’s words
A. Distinguishing cancers is important in early experiments.
B. Blood tests will be more difficult in the future.
C. There will be more dogs tested for detecting cancer.
D. The hidden cancers may be detected by an electronic nose soon.
24.What is the text mainly about
A. The result of a study on dogs’ life. B. The role of dogs in detecting cancers.
C. The importance of having a blood test. D. The ways to distinguish cancers.

一、阅读理解
2012 was one of the hardest years I have ever known because I lost my husband. For several months, I found it hard to write, think, eat or take pleasure in anything; I could not imagine what it would be like to feel happy again; I could not find any hope or purpose.
I cannot remember the reason why one Monday morning I decided to go to a hot yoga(瑜伽) studio in east London, where I signed up for a 30-day trial. I do not remember the class or how much I sweated. What I do know is that I started going to hot yoga every day. Sometimes, when my head felt as if it might break me down, I went twice a day. I skipped parties, left social events and got up early to attend. There was something about the hot room that held me together, stopping all the dark thoughts inside my mind.
I chose the Bikram method of hot yoga: It has a set of 26 postures and two breathing exercises performed in heat over a period of 90 minutes. This form of yoga was founded by Bikram Choudhury. In 2015, he failed in an attempt to copyright his method. Many practitioners (从业人员) believe that Bikram is not real yoga. Some question the limitations of just 26 postures (姿势). Others wonder why the class has to be performed before a wall of mirrors. However, something in those 26 postures freed my mind, dragged me out of my thoughts and back into the present. I was able to focus on how my body behaved differently each day.

Life has been hard for Chinese villager Zu Wenbao, who is in his early 20s. But thanks to Beijing-based Chen's Studio, music has become his saving grace. Zu has autism (自闭症) , which has meant Zu was unable to fit in at school or among other young people. All that changed when he started learning music at Chen's Studio.
Zu, joined the five-studio school in 2020.He has since learned to play the keyboard, and sings along with the other members of the "Star Kids "band that their teacher, Chen Shensi, set up in 2021 for people with autism. "Without music and band, he wouldn't have any peers to socialise with, "said Zu's mother, who travels with her son every Sunday for two hours on three different buses from their current home in the suburb of Beijing so that he can attend classes. "Even though some kids taking music classes are younger than him and half his size, they all take care of him like he's their brother."
Eager to help more people with autism, Chen started free-of-charge lessons. "Life for them has been hard, and I wanted to do as much as I could to give them joy through music, "he said. Chen admits he was very frustrated at first with his students because he had to repeat himself many times. Disciplining the class was also tough, but eventually, the students started communicating better with him and each other.
People with autism tend to find it difficult to get jobs, but Chen hopes he can change that by giving his students a way to earn a living: the "Star Kids" band has already performed in several concerts at events held at campsites on the suburbs of Beijing. "It's just difficult for them to communicate normally with other people, let alone work in a typical job, but they might be able to make a living as artists. To some degree, I think music might be their language, "Chen said.

B.To help his students master a way to earn a living through music.
C.To teach some communication skills to his students with autism.
D.To make money through performing concerts at the edge of Beijing.
It was early winter several years ago. I had pulled out my old winter coat for another year’s use. It was still in pretty good shape although it was looking dirty from so many winters’ wear. I didn’t really need a new one but I wanted one and casually mentioned it to my daughter one day. She was such a sweet, loving girl that I should have guessed what would happen next. A few weeks later she gave me a new winter coat as a gift.
I put the old one in my closet and started to wear the new coat every day. Each day, though, when I opened my closet, something troubled me. It seemed a shame that my old but still good coat should just sit there keeping no one warm during the cold winter days. After a few weeks, I took it out and drove to a local charity shop. I knew that there was someone who couldn’t afford a coat but could get my old one.
My new coat is my old coat now. It is getting a little dirty and worn, too. It has black marks on the sleeves. It is in too bad shape to even donate to charity. I wonder if I should buy a new one soon, but I think I will wait for a while. I don’t really need a new one and maybe I can find something else to give to the charity shop instead.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Want is a growing giant whom the coat of Have was never large enough to cover.” Perhaps the best way to deal with our wants then is to give instead. Love, after all, brings us the most joy. And the more of it you give away, the more of it you have.

The Price of a Dream
I grew up poor. We had little money, but plenty of love and attention. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, they could still afford a dream. My dream was athletics.
By the time I was sixteen, I was good at baseball and football. My high school coach was Ollie Jarvis. He not only believed in me, but taught me the difference between having a dream and showing conviction (信念).
One summer a friend recommended me for a summer job. This meant a chance for money in my pocket — cash for dates with girls, certainly, money for a new bike and new clothes, and the start of savings for a house for my mother.
Then I realized I would have to give up summer baseball to handle the work schedule, and that meant I would have to tell Coach Jarvis I wouldn’t be playing. I was afraid of this, but my mother said, “If you make your bed, you have to lie in it.”
When I told Coach Jarvis, he was as mad as I expected him to be. “Your playing days are limited. You can’t afford to waste them,” he said.
I stood before him with my head hanging, trying to think of the words that would explain to him why I dream of buying my mom a house.
“How much are you going to make at this job, son ” he demanded.
“Three point twenty-five an hour,” I replied.
“Well,” he asked, “is $3. 25 an hour the price of a dream ”
That question exposed the difference between wanting something right now and having a goal. I devoted myself to sports that summer, and within the year I was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates to play rookie-league ball, and offered a $20, 000 contract. I signed with the Denver Broncos in 1984 for $1.7 million, and bought my mother my dream house.

Culture shock is a broad term for a series of personal difficulties that people go through in new places ant is usually most extreme for those who can not speak the language of the place they have moved to or for those who aren’t familiar with the social rules. Both of these things applied to me in China when I moved there in 2011. So, naturally I went through the full well-known stages of culture shock: the honeymoon, frustration, adjustment and acceptance.
When I arrived I was excited and optimistic but I quickly became annoyed by cultural differences, missing how things worked back home.
By the end of my first year I had totally lost my self confidence and I became a bit clumsy and sensitive person and I thought it was China that made me that way.
Then in my second year I started to pick up some language skills and I found fun activities to do in my spare time. I made great foreign and Chinese friends and later I developed an interest in Chinese history and culture. Based on the above I learned to consider myself a confident and happy foreigner.
Today I’m back in the US where I’m pursuing a PhD at university in my hometown. It’s been a little tough to readjust to the life in my home country. I suffered at first from reverse culture shock, experiencing the four stages in the opposite order.
I’d complain loudly about the little things like I could no longer shout “ fu wu yuan” to get a waiter’s attention in a restaurant. But eventually I came to realize that my home had become an entirely new place when I was away. That, by itself ,was exciting.

20.What can we learn about the author according to the last paragraph
A. He began to feel that life in the US was boring.
B. He wished to call “fu wu yuan” in a restaurant.
C. He was unable to accept American life.
D. He needed to adjust himself to his native life.
Super Typhoon Rai (known as “Odette” in the Philippines) made landfall on Siargao Island in southeastern Philippines at 1:30 pm local time on Thursday, December 16. The typhoon was the 15th storm to hit the country in 2021 and was the strongest storm of 2021. Almost 16 million Filipinos were facing threats including strong winds, heavy rains, flooding, landslides, displacement and risking loss of life, home, livelihood and agriculture. Around 700,000 of them were children.
UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund) expressed deep concern for children and families at risk and announced its commitment to providing support to the Philippine government. Reyn Ambag was one of the children who were rescued during the typhoon.
12-year-old Reyn Ambag is a grade 7 student living on the island of Siargao. He goes to school in San Isidro National High School which is located in the Municipality of San Isidro. With Values Education as his favorite subject in school, Reyn is always ready to help others.
Reyn is raised by his mother who is a single parent and runs a retail store alone. Aside from his mother, his cousin has also been living with them to help out in the absence of Reyn’s father. Reyn’s mother provides for all three of them. She is able to support their daily needs and Reyn’s schooling by the income she gets from the small retail store.
During Typhoon Odette, Reyn’s family stayed inside the comfort room of the school where they were evacuated(疏散)to. There, he witnessed through the window how the strong winds of the typhoon destroyed the area. They stayed there until the storm subsided and it was safe for them to go out. Upon returning to their home, they were astonished to find that their house was damaged due to the fallen trees.
After observing the delays in restoring the electricity in their community, Reyn wanted to pursue a related job in the future. “I want to be an electrician someday so that if a power cut would happen because of a typhoon, I would be able to help in restoring it for free,” said Reyn.

一、阅读理解
Underwater travel is difficult and dangerous, but many people have to stay deep under the ocean. Thus, humans have come up with a few designs of vehicles to move around under the ocean. But what if there was a better way to travel
Hilary Bart-Smith, an engineer at the University of Virginia, thinks a vehicle that travels like a manta ray (魔鬼鱼) would be able to operate for long periods at sea. Manta rays which can grow up to 29 feet long are among the most efficient swimmers in the ocean. Different from animals and people pushing against water, manta rays swim by moving through the water with wing-like movements of their fins (鳍) . Efficiency means using less energy to move farther.
Bart-Smith and other engineers at the University of Virginia had to find out what manta rays looked like on the inside to better understand how they move. They took X-rays to find out how a manta ray's fins are built. They found that a web of cartilage (软骨) stretches across each fin.
Once the engineers knew how a manta ray's fin was constructed, they could build one of their own. They made a long row of metal struts with many hinges to imitate the manta ray's web of cartilage. The engineers put their design inside a flexible cover, shaped like a manta ray's fin. Then they tested it in the university swimming pool. They were happy to see that it swam just like a manta ray in the ocean.
Engineers and scientists are still learning and experimenting with how to imitate these amazing animals. For now, engineers study their movements and learn from the most efficient swimmers in the ocean. Perhaps someday engineers will be able to build manta ray robots that are big enough to transport people.

People tend to pay less attention to tasks when working alongside a robot, according to research that found evidence of "social loafing", where team members work less hard if they think others will cover for them.
Researchers at the Technical University of Berlin said people come to see robots as part of their team. Where they think a colleague or the technology performs particularly well, or where they think their own contribution would not be appreciated, people tend to take a more laid-back approach.
"Teamwork is a mixed blessing, "said Dietlind Helene Cymek (DHC) , the first author of the study. "Working together can motivate people to perform well but it can also lead to a loss of motivation because the individual contribution is not as visible. We were interested in whether we could also find such motivational effects when the team partner is a robot."
The team tested their hypothesis by asking a group of workers to check the quality of a series of tasks. The workers were all asked to carry out checks for errors on circuit boards (电路板) . Half of them were told the tasks were also performed by a robot. While they did not work directly with the robot, named Panda, those people had seen it and were able to hear it operating.
Their activity was monitored by the researchers, who blurred out the images of the boards the workers received, only showing them an image they could check once they actively opened it.
Initially, they said they found no statistical difference in the time the two groups-those who were told they were working with a robot and those who were not-spent inspecting the circuit boards, or in the area they searched for errors.
However, when the researchers investigated the participants' error rates, they found those knowing Panda's presence were catching fewer defects after they had seen the robot had successfully flagged many errors. They said this could reflect a "looking but not seeing" effect, where people engage less once they feel a colleague or resource is reliable.
While participants who were asked to rate their own performance thought they were paying an equivalent amount of attention, the researchers felt that subconsciously they had begun to assume Panda had picked up defects well.
5.Why do people pay less attention to tasks when working with a robot
A.They see the robot as their colleague.
B.They think the robot can cover all tasks.
C.They believe their performance will be appreciated.
D.They feel unvalued about their personal contribution.
6.What does DHC mean by saying "Teamwork is a mixed blessing"
A.Teamwork is of great help for workers.
B.Teamwork can improve work efficiency.
C.Teamwork involves different kinds of weaknesses.
D.Teamwork has both advantages and disadvantages.
7.What did the workers need to do during the researchers' test
A.They need to blur out the images of the circuit boards.
B.They need to check errors on circuit boards with robots
C.They need to see and hear how the robots were operating.
D.They need to monitor the robots to check the quality of circuit boards.
8.Which of the following can best describe the procedure of the study
A.Group→Instruct→Monitor→Rate
B.Question→Detect→Demonstrate→Collect

Interspecies was once a technical term used in science to describe how one species got along with another. Now it is a word of more consequence: it arouses the new connections between humans and non-humans that are being made possible by technology. In Ways of Being, James Bridle, a British artist and technology writer, explores what this means for understanding the non-human intelligence on Earth.
Mr Bridle makes it clear that three kinds of minds are now interacting: humans, non-humans and machines. Using artificial intelligence (AI), machines in the future will have the capability to interpose(使介入) themselves as translators between humans and other biological life forms.
It is true that profit is the main motive for advances in AI; as yet nature does not get much of a look-in, and non-human intelligence goes unexplored outside zoology puting is as focused on humans as ever, even as climate change and biodiversity-loss suggest it should devote much greater attention to other species.
The first step towards an interspecies future, Mr Bridle argues, is showing more appreciation for other forms of intelligence. To some extent, this is already happening. For example, through films and other initiatives many people now know that octopuses(章鱼) have advanced and strange intelligence. The next step, Mr Bridle declares, is recognizing that people live in a "more-than-human" world. Other forms of intelligence have developed from a common evolutionary base, and they overlap(重叠) in ways that science is just beginning to discover.
Ways of Being would have benefited from sharper editing. Yet, in making clear the patience, imagination and humility required to better know and protect other forms of intelligence on Earth, he has made an admirable contribution to the dawning of the interspecies age.
9.Which of the following best illustrates the term "interspecies"
A.A wolf hunts a rabbit. B.A robot does housework.
C.A lady walks her dog. D.A boy records a video for squirrels.
10.What does AI lay emphasis on nowadays
A.Biodiversity. B.Other species. C.Humans. D.Climate change.
11.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A.The characteristics of species evolution.
B.Expectations for the future development of AI.
C.Suggestions on future exploration of interspecies.
D. The importance of appreciation for other forms of intelligence.
12.Which word best describes the author's attitude to Ways of Being
A.Skeptical. B.Favorable. C.Tolerant. D.Conservative.
Steam trains paved the way for modern-day transportation, but just how much do you know about them
The roots of steam trains can be traced back to the 18th century when the Scottish engineer James Watt improved steam engine technology. Watt’s improvements significantly enhanced the efficiency of steam engines. This breakthrough paved the way for the application of steam power in various industries, marking the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. As the 19th century started, George Stephenson used the power of steam to power locomotives (火车头), telling the age of steam-powered transportation.
Steam trains played a vital role in transforming the world into a connected network of nations. The completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in the United States in 1869 marked a historic moment, as steam locomotives linked the East and West coasts, reducing travel time and expanding economic, opportunities.
Similarly, the Orient Express in Europe became a symbol of luxury and international travel, carrying passengers from Paris to Istanbul in a quick way. The rhythmic sound of wheels on rails echoed (回响) through diverse landscapes, from the dry deserts of Australia to the snowy expanses of Siberia, as steam trains formed paths of connectivity across continents. During times of war, the role of steam trains extended to soldier transportation.
While steam trains led the railway landscape for over a century, the mid-20th century witnessed the arrival of electric and diesel locomotives, claiming greater efficiency and lower operational costs, and signaling a transformative shift.
As steam trains were not mainstream transportation, enthusiasts worldwide have preserved and restored steam locomotives, ensuring that these classic engine s continue to attract new generations with their nostalgic (怀旧的) charm, and that their stories continue to be told for ages to come.
For Heritage railways, they dedicate to the restoration and operation of classic steam locomotives. From the Bluebell Railway in England to the Strasburg Rail Road in the United States, these living museums allow modern-day travelers to experience the magic of steam travel. Riding the polished carriages and hearing the distinctive whistle, visitors experience a sensory voyage, connecting with a time when steam trains were the heartbeat of progress and adventure.
13.What marks the beginning of the Industrial Revolution
A. Rapid expansion of railways.
B. Advance of steam locomotives.
C. Great efficiency of transportation.
D. The use of steam power in industries.
14.What does the author intend to do in paragraph 4
A. Summarize the previous paragraphs.
B. Add more facts to the role of steam trains.
C. Share a historic moment.
D. Introduce the Orient Express.
15.How do Heritage railways react to the decline of steam trains
A. They welcome the arrival of electric engines.
B. They insist on using steam trains.
C. They offer a journey back in time.
D. They prefer to improve steam engines.
16.Where is the text probably taken from
A. A travel guide. B. A book review.
C. A history paper. D. A newspaper report.
Ancient builders across the world created structures that are still standing today, thousands of years later. Roman builders built thick concrete sea barriers against waves. Mayan builders created great sculptures, and Chinese builders constructed walls against foreign enemies.
A growing number of scientists have been studying materials since a long time ago. They are breaking apart pieces of buildings and reading historical texts hoping to learn how they have stood for thousands of years. The research has turned up a surprising list of materials that were mixed into old buildings. They include tree bark, volcanic ash, rice and beer. These unexpected materials can have the ability to get stronger over time. Figuring out how to copy these features can have real impacts today. While some of our modern concrete has the strength to hold up very tall buildings and heavy structures, it cannot compete with the durability of these ancient materials.
Many scientists have turned to the Romans. Starting around 200 BC, the Roman Empire was building concrete structures that have stood the test of time. Even in places where seawater has been hitting structures for ages, you will find concrete basically the way it was when it was poured 2,000 years ago. They think they have found an important reason why some Roman concrete has held up structures for thousands of years. That the ancient materials have an unusual power to restore themselves and “cure” cracks (裂缝) when they form is the most shocking for them. Exactly how is not yet clear, but scientists are starting to find the reasons.
Today’s builders cannot just copy the ancient processes. Even though Roman concrete lasted a long time, it couldn’t hold up heavy buildings. Instead, researchers are trying to take some of the ancient materials and add them into modern mixes. People don’t need to make things last quite as long as the Romans did. If we add 50 or 100 years to concrete’s lifespan, we’ll surely require less pulling down, less maintenance and less material in the long run.
17.What were the mentioned Roman and Chinese buildings both used for
A. Travel. B. Defence.
C. Soldier training. D. Seawater control.
18.Which word can best describe the ancient buildings
A. Long-lasting. B. Energy-efficient. C. Delicate. D. Flexible.
19.What surprises the scientists most about the ancient building materials
A. Their large cracks. B. Their clear concrete.
C. Their internal structures. D. Their self-repairing ability.
20.What is the author’s attitude to the future concrete
A. Tolerant. B. Expectant. C. Suspicious. D. Indifferent.
O'Brien and Samantha Kassirer from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University conducted two experiments to determine the levels of people's happiness when they gave away money or when they spent it on themselves.
The first experiment involved 96 college students receiving $5 every day for five days. They had to spend the money on the same thing each day. Researchers randomly asked the participants to either spend the money on themselves or give it to someone else, like through a tip or an online donation to a charity. The participants ended each day by reflecting on their spending experience and their overall level of happiness. Regardless of how they spent the money, everyone started off with roughly the same level of self-reported happiness. Those who spent the money on themselves, however, experienced a decline in happiness over the five-day period. The people who gave the money to someone else maintained their happiness levels.
The second experiment conducted online, involved 502 people playing 10 rounds of a word puzzle game. When the players won in a round, they received 5 cents. The participants could either keep the 5 cents or donate it to a charity. After each round, people rated the level of happiness they felt after winning a round. As with the first study, those who gave away the money reported a longer stretch of happiness than those who kept the money for themselves.
As for why people who used the money for themselves aren't happy for so long, the researchers explain that focusing on an outcome—like getting paid—can diminish the experience. When people focus on an action—like giving to charity—they concentrate more on the act itself as a joyful event, explaining why happiness stays more consistent among those who spend the money on others. "If you want to sustain happiness over time, our new research shows that repeated giving, even in the same way to the same people, may make you continue to feel much fresher and more enjoyable," O'Brien said.
So the next time you think about spending money on yourself, maybe give it to someone in need instead. Your happiness will thank you.
21.What is the finding of the experiments
A.People get more happiness when giving money to others.
B.Those who give money to others like to do it online.
C.Your level of happiness can be influenced by many factors.
D.Those who win rewards are willing to give money to a charity.
22.According to O'Brien, what is the secret of maintaining happiness
A.Saving enough money. B.Trying something new.
C.Keeping on giving. D.Balancing rest and work.
23.Which of the following shows the correct structure of the whole text
A. B. C. D.
24.What is the best title for the text
A.Money isn't the key to happiness B.It is better to give than to receive

一、阅读理解
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers trails (路线) for all skill levels and we’ve pulled together a list of some of the easier hiking trails that are perfect for kids.
Gatlinburg Trail

And if you happen to visit during the spring season, be on the lookout for all the beautiful spring wildflowers beginning to bloom. The roundtrip length is 4 miles.
Laurel Falls
The Laurel Falls trail is 2.3 miles round trip and considered to be one of the best waterfall hikes in the Great Smoky Mountains! Laurel Falls Trail is paved but rocky and uneven, and there are a few steep drop-offs as you get closer to the falls, so wear appropriate shoes and keep small children close.
Andrew’s Bald Hiking Trail

Maybe you only think about bread in terms of what holds your sandwich together. But bread has played such an important role in our lives for thousands of years that words and phrases relating to it have crept into our everyday vocabularies.
Breadwinner
Have you ever heard your mom or dad referred to as the breadwinner of the household No, they aren't running a race to win a loaf of bread for dinner or entering some weird lottery at the bakery. Since "bread" is a term for the basic food and drink that everyone needs, "breadwinner" refers to the person who is the main provider for a family, the one who earns the money to bring home the "bread" that their family needs. Today, usually both mom and dad are breadwinners.
Breadbasket
It may sound like something they bring the breadsticks in at a restaurant, but a breadbasket actually has other meanings besides bread holder. A region of a country that grows a lot of grain, like the Midwest region of the United States, is often called that country's breadbasket, since it provides the raw materials for much of its bread. Oddly enough, breadbasket is also a slang term for a person's stomach—where they "keep" their bread after eating it!
Best thing since sliced bread
This probably sounds weird, since most of us buy our bread at the grocery store, perfectly pre-sliced. But once people could only buy unsliced bread, they had to carefully cut each piece with a knife. In 1928, Otto Rohwedder invented a bread-slicing machine. Today the term is usually used in referring to a brilliant idea or the perfect device like those mysterious kitchen wares.
Bread and Butter
When the man at the auto repair shop says that flat tires are his "bread and butter", he's not on some strange new diet. This phrase refers to a task or job that's a basic means of making a living-in this case, fixing flat tires-which provides the most money for the essentials of everyday life.

A.Breadwinner. B.Breadbasket.

Leafy greens are a great way to improve your health as they possess many vital nutrients, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They are also low in calories, making them a good choice for those who want to manage their weight. The following salad leaves in your diet are highly recommended by nutritionists.
Spinach
Spinach is easy to get all year round. It is a good source of antioxidants, which can reduce the risk of many diseases, including heart disease and certain cancers. It's best eaten uncooked, as part of a salad, as cooking tends to destroy the naturally occurring nutrients in the leaves.
Collard greens
Collard greens are a good source of lutein, which is important for eye health. They are full of vitamins A and C and minerals such as calcium, iron, zinc, copper and selenium, and are a good source of fibre. As with spinach, you can get them all year round.
Rocket
If you're in the mood for a leafy green with a fresh, slightly bitter and peppery taste, consider adding rocket to your plate. Rocket is packed with nitrates-which studies have shown can boost performance in sports. Rocket is also rich in vitamins K and C, and calcium and polyphenols.
Romaine lettuce
Romaine lettuce is a good source of vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, K, C and folate. These nutrients are essential for maintaining overall health and supporting a healthy immune system. Romaine is a source of fibre too, which is known to reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and bowel cancer.
