1.书评会涉及到书目中提到的人名、地名、机构等专有名词,学会去识别定位;
2.书评会涉及书目内容、故事情节、人物性格、人物评价等,多用一般现在时;
Reading Art: Art for Book Lovers is a celebration of an everyday object — the book, represented here in almost three hundred artworks from museums around the world. The image of the reader appears throughout history, in art made long before books as we now know them came into being. In artists’ representations of books and reading, we see moments of shared humanity that go beyond culture and time.
In this “book of books,” artworks are selected and arranged in a way that emphasizes these connections between different eras and cultures. We see scenes of children learning to read at home or at school, with the book as a focus for relations between the generations. Adults are portrayed (描绘) alone in many settings and poses —absorbed in a volume, deep in thought or lost in a moment of leisure. These scenes may have been painted hundreds of years ago, but they record moments we can all relate to.
Books themselves may be used symbolically in paintings to demonstrate the intellect (才智), wealth or faith of the subject. Before the wide use of the printing press, books were treasured objects and could be works of art in their own right. More recently, as books have become inexpensive or even throwaway, artists have used them as the raw material for artworks — transforming covers, pages or even complete volumes into paintings and sculptures.
Continued developments in communication technologies were once believed to make the printed page outdated. From a 21st-century point of view, the printed book is certainly ancient, but it remains as interactive as any battery-powered e-reader. To serve its function, a book must be activated by a user: the cover opened, the pages parted, the contents reviewed, perhaps notes written down or words underlined. And in contrast to our increasingly networked lives where the information we consume is monitored and tracked, a printed book still offers the chance of a wholly private, “off-line” activity.
28. Where is the text most probably taken from
A. An introduction to a book. B. An essay on the art of writing.
C. A guidebook to a museum. D. A review of modern paintings.
29. What are the selected artworks about
A. Wealth and intellect. B. Home and school.
C. Books and reading. D. Work and leisure.
30. What do the underlined words “relate to” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Understand. B. Paint.
C. Seize. D. Transform.
31. What does the author want to say by mentioning the e-reader
A. The printed book is not totally out of date.
B. Technology has changed the way we read.
C. Our lives in the 21st century are networked.
D. People now rarely have the patience to read.
B 29. C 30. A 31. A
通读全文,再根据文章第一段“Reading Art: Art for Book Lovers is a celebration of an everyday object — the book, represented here in almost three hundred artworks from museums around the world. (Reading Art: Art for Book Lovers这一活动是为书籍这一日常物品办的典礼,这里有来自世界各地博物馆的近三百件艺术品)”以及倒数第二段“Before the wide use of the printing press, books were treasured objects and could be works of art in their own right. (在印刷机广泛使用之前,书籍是珍贵的物品,它们本身就可以成为艺术品)”可推知,本文最有可能出自一篇关于著作艺术的文章。故选B。
29.细节理解题。通过文章第二段“artworks are selected and arranged in a way that emphasizes these connections between different eras and cultures. We see scenes of children learning to read at home or at school, with the book as a focus for relations between the generations. (艺术品的选择和排列方式强调了不同时代和文化之间的联系。我们看到孩子们在家里或学校学习阅读的场景,这本书是几代人之间关系的焦点)”可知,选定的艺术品是关于书籍和阅读的。故选C。
30.词句猜测题。根据画线词上文“artworks are selected and arranged in a way that emphasizes these connections between different eras and cultures. We see scenes of children learning to read at home or at school, with the book as a focus for relations between the generations. (艺术品的选择和排列方式强调了不同时代和文化之间的联系。我们看到孩子们在家里或学校学习阅读的场景,这本书是几代人之间关系的焦点)”以及“These scenes may have been painted hundreds of years ago, but they record moments (这些场景可能是数百年前绘制的,但它们记录了一些时刻)”可推知,此处指书籍是人类之间相互联系和理解的纽带,故与画线短语“relate to”意思最相近的为A项“理解、认识到”。故选A。
通过文章最后一段“it remains as interactive as any battery-powered e-reader (它仍然像任何电池供电的电子阅读器一样具有互动性)”以及“printed book still offers the chance of a wholly private, “off-line” activity (印刷书籍仍然提供了完全私人的“离线”活动的机会)”可推知,本文作者提到电子阅读器想表达的是印刷书籍并没有完全过时。故选A。
I was about 13 when an uncle gave me a copy of Jostein Gaarder’s Sophie’s World. It was full of ideas that were new to me, so I spent the summer with my head in and out of that book. It spoke to me and brought me into a world of philosophy (哲学).
That love for philosophy lasted until I got to college. Nothing kills the love for philosophy faster than people who think they understand Foucault, Baudrillard, or Confucius better than you — and then try to explain them.
Eric Weiner’s The Socrates Express: In Search of Life Lessons from Dead Philosophers reawakened my love for philosophy. It is not an explanation, but an invitation to think and experience philosophy.
Weiner starts each chapter with a scene on a train ride between cities and then frames each philosopher’s work in the context (背景) of one thing they can help us do better. The end result is a read in which we learn to wonder like Socrates, see like Thoreau, listen like Schopenhauer, and have no regrets like Nietzsche. This, more than a book about understanding philosophy, is a book about learning to use philosophy to improve a life.
He makes philosophical thought an appealing exercise that improves the quality of our experiences, and he does so with plenty of humor. Weiner enters into conversation with some of the most important philosophers in history, and he becomes part of that crowd in the process by decoding (解读) their messages and adding his own interpretation.
The Socrates Express is a fun, sharp book that draws readers in with its apparent simplicity and gradually pulls them in deeper thoughts on desire, loneliness, and aging. The invitation is clear: Weiner wants you to pick up a coffee or tea and sit down with this book. I encourage you to take his offer. It’s worth your time, even if time is something we don’t have a lot of.
28. Who opened the door to philosophy for the author
A. Foucault. B. Eric Weiner.
C. Jostein Gaarder. D. A college teacher.
29. Why does the author list great philosophers in paragraph 4
A. To compare Weiner with them.
B. To give examples of great works.
C. To praise their writing skills.
D. To help readers understand Weiners book.
30. What does the author like about The Socrates Express
A. Its views on history are well-presented.
B. Its ideas can be applied to daily life.
C. It includes comments from readers.
D. It leaves an open ending.
31. What does the author think of Weiners book
A. Objective and plain.
B. Daring and ambitious.
C. Serious and hard to follow.
D. Humorous and straightforward.
C 29. D 30. B 31. D

In 1916, two girls of wealthy families, best friends from Auburn, N. Y.—Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood—traveled to a settlement in the Rocky Mountains to teach in a one-room schoolhouse. The girls had gone to Smith College. They wore expensive clothes. So for them to move to Elkhead, Colo. to instruct the children whose shoes were held together with string was a surprise. Their stay in Elkhead is the subject of Nothing Daunted: The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West by Dorothy Wickenden, who is a magazine editor and Dorothy Woodruff’s granddaughter.
Why did they go then Well, they wanted to do something useful. Soon, however, they realized what they had undertaken.
They moved in with a local family, the Harrisons, and, like them, had little privacy, rare baths, and a blanket of snow on their quilt when they woke up in the morning. Some mornings, Rosamond and Dorothy would arrive at the schoolhouse to find the children weeping from the cold. In spring, the snow was replaced by mud over ice.
In Wickenden’s book, she expanded on the history of the West and also on feminism, which of course influenced the girls’ decision to go to Elkhead. A hair-raising section concerns the building of the railroads, which entailed (牵涉) drilling through the Rockies, often in blinding snowstorms. The book ends with Rosamond and Dorothy’s return to Auburn.
Wickenden is a very good storyteller. The sweep of the land and the stoicism (坚忍) of the people move her to some beautiful writing. Here is a picture of Dorothy Woodruff, on her horse, looking down from a hill top: “When the sun slipped behind the mountains, it shed a rosy glow all around them. Then a full moon rose. The snow was marked only by small animals: foxes, coyotes, mice, and varying hares, which turned white in the winter.”
24. Why did Dorothy and Rosamond go to the Rocky Mountains
A. To teach in a school. B. To study American history.
C. To write a book. D. To do sightseeing.
25. What can we learn about the girls from paragraph 3
A. They enjoyed much respect. B. They had a room with a bathtub.
C. They lived with the local kids. D. They suffered severe hardships.
26. Which part of Wickenden’s writing is hair-raising
A. The extreme climate of Auburn. B. The living conditions in Elkhead.
C. The railroad building in the Rockies. D. The natural beauty of the West.
27. What is the text
A. A news report. B. A book review. C. A children’s story. D. A diary entry.

In the mid-1990s, Tom Bissell taught English as a volunteer in Uzbekistan. He left after seven months, physically broken and having lost his mind. A few years later, still attracted to the country, he returned to Uzbekistan to write an article about the disappearance of the Aral Sea.
His visit, however, ended up involving a lot more than that. Hence this book, Chasing the Sea: Lost Among the Ghosts of Empire in Central Asia, which talks about a road trip from Tashkent to Karakalpakstan, where millions of lives have been destroyed by the slow drying up of the sea. It is the story of an American travelling to a strange land, and of the people he meets on his way: Rustam, his translator, a lovely 24-year-old who picked up his colorful English in California, Oleg and Natasha, his hosts in Tashkent, and a string of foreign aid workers.
This is a quick look at life in Uzbekistan, made of friendliness and warmth, but also its darker side of society. In Samarkand, Mr Bissell admires the architectural wonders, while on his way to Bukhara he gets a taste of police methods when suspected of drug dealing. In Ferghana, he attends a mountain funeral(葬礼)followed by a strange drinking party. And in Karakalpakstan, he is saddened by the dust storms, diseases and fishing boats stuck miles from the sea.
Mr Bissell skillfully organizes historical insights and cultural references, making his tale a well-rounded picture of Uzbekistan, seen from Western eyes. His judgment and references are decidedly American, as well as his delicate stomach. As the author explains, this is neither a travel nor a history book, or even a piece of reportage. Whatever it is, the result is a fine and vivid description of the purest of Central Asian traditions.
28. What made Mr Bissell return to Uzbekistan
A. His friends' invitation. B. His interest in the country.
C. His love for teaching. D. His desire to regain health.
29. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Developing a serious mental disease.
B. Taking a guided tour in Central Asia.
C. Working as a volunteer in Uzbekistan.
D. Writing an article about the Aral Sea.
30. Which of the following best describes Mr Bissell's road trip in Uzbekistan
A. Romantic. B. Eventful. C. Pleasant. D. Dangerous.
31. What is the purpose of this text
A. To introduce a book. B. To explain a cultural phenomenon.
C. To remember a writer. D. To recommend a travel destination.
B 29. D 30. B 31. A
A few years later, still attracted to the country. he returned to Uzbekistan to write an article about the disappearance of the Ara Sea”可知,几年后,Bissell仍然被这个国家所吸引。
A few years later, still attracted to the country, he returned to Uzbekistan to write an article about the disappearance of the Aral Sea(几年后,仍然被这个国家所吸引。
And in Karakalpakstan, he is saddened by the dust storms, diseases and fishing boats stuck miles from the sea.”
故选A。
I am an active playgoer and play-reader, and perhaps my best reason for editing this book is a hope of sharing my enthusiasm for the theater with others. To do this I have searched through dozens of plays to find the ones that I think best show the power and purpose of the short play.
Each play has a theme or central idea which the playwright(剧作家) hopes to get across through dialogue and action. A few characters are used to create a single impression growing out of the theme. It is not my intention to point out the central theme of each of the plays in this collection, for that would, indeed, ruin the pleasure of reading, discussing, and thinking about the plays and the effectiveness of the playwright. However, a variety of types is represented here. These include comedy, satire, poignant drama, historical and regional drama. To show the versatility(多面性) of the short play, I have included a guidance play, a radio play and a television play.

4.0 out of 5 stars
Odd, fun and cute story. Great read
This was a cute, lighthearted book that explores the life of a Craigslist addict, and how Craiglist, a large free classifieds (分类广告) website, got her through her life so far. The story was well thought out and pretty realistic when it comes to life struggles. It gets a little unbelievable towards the end, and I don’t like it when authors conform to the ‘the world is perfect’ viewpoint most books have, but, that my pessimist breaking through.

The Starry Night was painted in June 1889 when Vincent van Gogh was staying at a home for the mentally ill. Van Gogh painted what he saw from his window - the night sky with clouds, stars and a moon. However, he didn’t just paint the clouds He also painted the massive circles of white and yellow racing across the sky. The stars and the moon hang bright in the night sky. Beneath this amazing sky, we see a sleeping village and a dark lonely tree.
Unfortunately, Van Gogh's unique paintings weren’t very popular and he only sold one painting in his lifetime. He also thought The Starry Night was a failure. However, the fact remains that The Starry Night is now one of the world's most famous paintings.
The Scream was painted by Edvard Munch in 1893. What makes it striking is that it shows a thin figure with an expression of fear - the figure's mouth is wide open and letting out a powerful scream. The figure covers his or her ears and looks directly at the viewer. This figure is set on a bridge above a dark, stormy sea, and against a burning orange-red sky.
Many experts say that The Scream is connected to Munch's mental health problems, which caused him a lot of pain.
The Empire of Light is a series of paintings by Belgian artist Rene Magritte. Between1953 and 1954, he painted the same scene 27 times. It shows a beautiful house lit by lights from inside, surrounded by the darkness of night. What is strange is that above the house and the tree, we see a daytime sky full of brightness and soft white clouds. It seems like quite a mysterious scene.
The Empire of Light has produced different reactions in viewers. Some feel that the paintings look dark and troubling Others, however, find them calming. As for Magritte himself, he thought that the change between day and night in the paintings was surprising."I call this power poetry."he said.
4. How did Van Gogh's think of his work The Starry Night
A. achieved. B. skilled. C. failed. D. unfinished.
5. What do these three paintings have in common
A. They are paintings of night.
B. They were painted in the 19th century.
C. They were drawn by mentally-ill artists.
D. They picture the artists’ understanding of nature.
6. What is the writing style of the text
A. A narration. B. An exposition. C. A diary entry. D. A book review.
4. C 5. D 6. B
根据第二段“He also thought The Starry Night was a failure.(他也认为《星空》是个失败的作品)”可知,梵高认为《星空》是个失败的作品。故选C。
根据第一幅画作“The Starry Night”中的描述“Van Gogh painted what he saw from his window - the night sky with clouds, stars and a moon. However, he didn’t just paint the clouds He also painted the massive circles of white and yellow racing across the sky. The stars and the moon hang bright in the night sky. Beneath this amazing sky, we see a sleeping village and a dark lonely tree.(梵高描绘了他从自己窗户看到的景象——有云彩,星星和月亮的夜空。然而,除了云之外,他还在天空中画了相互追逐的巨大白色和黄色光圈。星星和月亮在夜空中熠熠生辉。在这片神奇的夜空下,我们看到了一个沉睡的村庄和一棵黑暗孤独的树)”;第二幅画“The Scream”中的描述“This figure is set on a bridge above a dark, stormy sea, and against a burning orange-red sky.(人物被设置在一座桥上,桥下是漆黑的、翻滚的海面,背景是燃烧的橙红色天空)”;以及第三幅画“The Empire of Light”中的描述“It shows a beautiful house lit by lights from inside, surrounded by the darkness of night. What is strange is that above the house and the tree, we see a daytime sky full of brightness and soft white clouds.(画中有一座美丽的房子,房子里充满了灯光,外面被夜晚的黑暗包围。奇怪的是,在房子和树木之上,我们看到明亮的天空和柔软的白云。这个场景看起来非常奇异)”可知,这三幅画作的共同之处是他们都展现出了艺术家们对自然的理解。故选D。
6. 推理判断题。根据第一段“The Starry Night was painted in June 1889 when Vincent van Gogh was staying at a home for the mentally ill. Van Gogh painted what he saw from his window - the night sky with clouds, stars and a moon.(《星空》是文森特·梵高(Vincent van Gogh)于1889年6月在一家精神病院里创作的。梵高描绘了他从自己窗户看到的景象——有云彩,星星和月亮的夜空)”第二段“The Scream was painted by Edvard Munch in 1893. This figure is set on a bridge above a dark, stormy sea, and against a burning orange-red sky.(《尖叫》是爱德华·蒙克(Edvard Munch)于1893年创作的。这幅画富有冲击力,画中有一个表情恐惧的瘦弱身影——嘴巴大张,正发出强烈的尖叫声。这个人捂住了自己的耳朵,直直地看向观众。人物被设置在一座桥上,桥下是漆黑的、翻滚的海面,背景是燃烧的橙红色天空)”以及第三段“The Empire of Light is a series of paintings by Belgian artist Rene Magritte. Between1953 and 1954, he painted the same scene 27 times. It shows a beautiful house lit by lights from inside, surrounded by the darkness of night.(《灯之王国》是比利时画家勒内·马格利特(Rene Magritte)的一系列绘画作品。1953年至1954年间,同样的场景他画了27次。画中有一座美丽的房子,房子里充满了灯光,外面被夜晚的黑暗包围)”可知,这是对三幅画作的介绍,所以是一篇说明文。A. A narration.记叙文;B. An exposition.说明文;C. A diary entry.随笔;D. A book review.书评。故选B。

Do you have one of those books The one you can’t remember the author of but the story never quite leaves your mind The Island Keeper is one of those books for me. It is now one of just a few that I’ve been able to identify again, and luckily my library still had an old 1981 copy.
When I read the book as a young teenager, I still remember being unable to understand it well and thinking that this book was very much about fat shaming.
Now, rereading it again after all these years, what also still comes through is the way that 16-year-old Cleo slowly becomes strong and independent. And that, I think, is why this story was stuck somewhere in the back of my mind for the past thirty or so years.
Initially (起初) planning to spend three days on the island her father owns in Canada, Cleo runs away from her distant father and controlling grandmother. Deep in sadness over the loss of her younger sister and her mother’s death, she feels a need to escape and has a step by step plan.
What starts as three days slowly becomes a summer, as she finds a cave and figures out how to survive. A storm, however, traps her on the island and she is forced to go to extreme measures to survive into winter.
Then she saves herself. And I rather like her grandmother’s reaction to Cleo’s weight loss. And she is rather at a loss for the words over the changes in her granddaughter’s physical appearance.
Finding a book I might never identify has been a joy. Each time I am able to identify a book like this, it brings back memories, but my reading of it brings new, and I hope deeper, insight.
19. What impresses “me” most in the story
A. Beauty of the island. B. Cleo’s growth in personality.
C. Grandmother’s reaction to her return. D. Cleo’s sadness for the loss of her family.
20. Which words can best describe Cleo’s life on the island
A. Tough and long. B. Boring and short.
C. Dangerous but exciting. D. Challenging but colorful.
21. What is the text
A. A news report. B. A travel journal. C. A book review. D. A research article.
19. B 20. A 21. C
根据第三段“Now, rereading it again after all these years, what also still comes through is the way that 16-year-old Cleo slowly becomes strong and independent. (这么多年过去了,现在再读一遍这本书,同样让人印象深刻的是16岁的Cleo慢慢变得坚强和独立。)”可知故事中的Cleo慢慢变得坚强和独立这一点让作者印象深刻,这是一种性格上的成长。故选B。
20. 推理判断题。根据第五段“What starts as three days slowly becomes a summer, as she finds a cave and figures out how to survive. Many people quote the phrase from Jane Jacobs that “there must be eyes on the street” to emphasize the relationship between urban safety and design. Jacobs’ views on urban safety were, in truth, far more complex than this phrase suggests. Her book The Death and Life of Great American Cities has become the basis of a worldwide movement to foster safer cities.
Jacobs made an important contribution to our understanding of cities by linking the fear of crime and urban design. In a successful city district a person must feel personally safe on the street among all these strangers. It doesn’t take many incidents of violence on a city street to make people fear the street. And as they fear them, they use them less, which makes the streets still more unsafe.
For Jacobs, eyes on the street came from stores and public places, including bars and restaurants along the sidewalks, street vendors and pedestrians. She recommended the installation of bright street lights to “sharpen every pair of eyes”.
Jacobs widened her attention to urban safety in general, including parks and public housing projects. While most planners focus on the green benefits of parks, she argued against underused or dangerous parks. She observed that parks are successful when they encourage a range of activities and users.
She emphasized design and management policies to encourage interaction at public housing sites. She suggest ed integrating public housing communities into existing street patterns and cultivating street activity by including businesses in the buildings. She opposed fencing and security guards, creating a sense of territory and isolating public housing residents from the wider community.
Jacobs wrote about her experience of daily life in the city and urged planners to pay attention to how ordinary people actually use urban space. From her experience as a wife, mother, and resident in New York, she arrived at a more human vision of the city than the experts of the day did. Her concern about urban safety was visionary (有远见的), and her manner of looking at the city still offers a critical viewpoint for evaluating crime prevention and community safety strategies today.
22. Why does the writer mention the phrase quoted from Jane Jacobs in the first paragraph
A. To call readers’ attention to the phrase.
B. To introduce Jane Jacobs’ book.
C. To prove the popularity of Jane Jacobs’ book.
D. To make the phrase better known.
23. According to Jacobs, what is a proper way to foster a successful city
A. Warning people of violence in streets.
B. Encouraging different activities in parks.
C. Employing security guards in the buildings.
D. Introducing safety policies at public housing sites.
24. Where is the text probably from
A. A book review. B. A guidebook. C. An advertisement. D. A biography.

Black Beauty by Anna Sewell is a great book that has attracted young and old readers for over a century. Its long-lasting popularity shows Sewell’s skillful storytelling and the great message at the novel’s heart.
Through the eyes of Black Beauty, readers are sent to a world filled with trouble, pity, and hope. Sewell’s choice to tell the story from the horse’s viewpoint (角度) was a new method which made it easier for future writers to explore the thoughts of animals. The main ideas in the novel are just as important today as they were in the Victorian times.

Among the writers of the plays in this collection, Paul Green, Susan Glaspell, Maxwell Anderson, Thornton Wilder, William Saroyan, and Tennessee Williams have all received Pulitzer Prizes for their contributions to the theater. More information about the playwrights will be found at the end of this book.
To get the most out of reading these plays, try to picture the play on stage, with you, the reader, in the audience. The houselights dim(变暗). The curtains are about to open, and in a few minutes the action and dialogue will tell you the story.
21.What do we know about the author from the first paragraph
A. He has written dozens of plays. B. He has a deep love for the theater.
C. He is a professional stage actor. D. He likes reading short plays to others.
22. What does the author avoid doing in his work
A. Stating the plays’ central ideas. B. Selecting works by famous playwrights.
C. Including various types of plays. D. Offering information on the playwrights.
23. What does the author suggest readers do while reading the plays
A. Control their feelings. B. Apply their acting skills.
C. Use their imagination. D. Keep their audience in mind.
24. What is this text
A. A short story. B. An introduction to a book.
C. A play review. D. An advertisement for a theater.

A. achieved. B. skilled. C. failed. D. unfinished.
5. What do these three paintings have in common

Black Beauty is a lovely black horse that begins as a carriage (马车) horse, but when he is hurt, his rich owner decides that he is no longer good enough to be a carriage horse. From that moment, he is passed from owner to owner and goes through lots of hard work. Even though many unpleasant things happen to Black Beauty at the hands of unkind humans, he lives up to his name both outside and inside.
This story of his life from birth to old age is beautifully descriptive. Everything from his active days as a baby horse on a farm to a hard life pulling carriages on stone roads in London can be readily pictured in the readers’mind. Each part carries an important message about animal well-being, kindness, and respect, and is filled with plenty of page-turning suspense (悬念).
This Collector’s Edition of Black Beauty shows respect for this beloved book. Each part of the book has been carefully considered. From the drawings on the cover to the colored blocking, this is truly one-of-a-kind. The matching colored endpapers add an extra touch of luxury (奢侈), making it the perfect addition to any collector’s library and a great chance to experience the story that will reach your heart and stay with you forever.

You can get a clear picture about Deep Work by Cal Newport in 5 minutes. Deep Work tells us professional activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive(认知的) capabilities to their limit. These efforts create new value and improve your skill. The ability to perform deep work is becoming increasingly rare at exactly the same time it is becoming increasingly valuable in our economy. As a consequence, the few who develop the skill, and then make it the core of their working life, will thrive(蓬勃发展).
The book tells us the core abilities for thriving in the new economy, which are the ability to quickly master hard things, the ability to produce a high level, in terms of both quality and speed. If you can’t learn, you can’t thrive. If you don’t produce, you won’t thrive—no matter how skilled or talented you are. If you haven’t mastered deep work, you’ll struggle to learn hard things. To learn hard things quickly, you must focus intensely without distraction.
The key to developing a deep work habit is to move beyond good intentions and add routines and habits to your working life designed to minimize a state of unbroken concentration. To master the art of deep work, therefore, you must take back control of your time and attention from the many entertainments on the Internet that attempt to steal them. Adopt a tool only if its positive impacts on these factors substantially outweigh its negative impacts. It’s crucial that you figure out in advance what you’re going to do with your evenings and weekends before they begin.
In the end of Deep Work, we can know that the ability to concentrate is a skill that gets valuable things done. If you’re struggling to use your mind to its fullest capacity to create things that matter, then you’ll discover, as others have before you, that depth generates a life rich with productivity and meaning.
32. What is presented in the first paragraph
A. Accurate analyses. B. Practical examples.
C. Theoretical introduction. D. Daring anticipation.
33. Who will have a particular advantage in this new economy
A. Those easy to get along well with. B. Those willing to give others a hand.
C. Those who’re very skilled or talented. D. Those who’re the best at what they do.
34. Which of the following can help develop a deep work habit
A. Quitting social media. B. Making a flexible schedule.
C. Forming a simple habit. D. Using on-demand distraction.
35. What is the text
A. A news report. B. An exam paper.
C. A book review. D. An economic article.

Elon Musk has offered a prize of $100m for the best carbon capture proposal. I can save his committee a lot of time. The money should go to Peter Wohlleben, whose book The Hidden Life of Trees was the most encouraging blockbuster (一鸣惊人) of 2015.Wohlleben’s idea is this: do nothing about trees. Stop fiddling (乱作为) with them, thinking that we can deal with climate change better than nature. If we fiddle, our Romes will burn.
The Hidden Life of Trees argued that trees are social. It shows that they can be our saviours. But it’s terribly hard to let ourselves be saved. We think we can be the authors of our salvation (拯救). Of course, there are things we could and should be doing, but in terms of forestry practice, often what’s billed as part of the solution is part of the problem.
Anyone who has planted a tree in their garden knows that it has a far-reaching effect — it makes your garden cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Forests cool by transpiring (蒸发). If there’s no water, there’s no cooling. Drought can kill trees fast, but trees have many ways of dealing with it, and Wohlleben sets them out. As a species, we have survived many climatic changes by changing our behaviour — and that’s how trees survive, too. Trees learn from their past harms and produce younger ones programmed with those lessons. They regulate their growth by changing the rate at which they drip (点滴)-feed them with sugar solution through root networks.
Deciduous (落叶的) forests in particular remove greenhouse gases effectively as long as they live. Cut them down and burn them and you’re releasing carbon dioxide not just from the wood, but also from the forest floor. Deciduous trees are not “harvest-ready” at 200 years: they are teenagers. We must interrogate comforting expressions such as “renewable energy”, and learn the real cost of our toilet paper.
If we don’t learn to do nothing about trees, they will eventually be alone anyway — but without us. Wohlleben brilliantly and readably shows us how urgent and how hard it is to do nothing.
36. What does Wohlleben suggest for carbon capture
A. Fight climate change. B. Leave trees alone.
C. Save the earth. D. Change forestry species.
37. How do trees survive the drought
A. They slow their growth. B. They lose all their leaves.
C. They stop absorbing water. D. They get help from humans.
38. What does the underlined word “interrogate” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Understand. B. Question.
C. Translate. D. Accept.
39. What is the text
A. A book review. B. A science report.
C. An introduction to a writer. D. A proposal for a reward

A Book Review — The Snake-Stone by Berlie Doherty
The setting: Urban England (the cities), but also rural England (the countryside) including remote English villages.
The theme: The main theme is a teenage search of self-discovery, in this case the search for a mother from whom the hero was separated at an early age. Its other concerns are love, getting on with others, being persistent and courageous and trying to deal with doubts, troubles and worries. As the book moves to a close, James’ swimming coach says to him: “You are not like a kid obeying instructions any more. You are diving like a young man who knows where he is going.”
The characters: James is the hero of the story. He is a championship diver, and has a comfortable life with his foster parents. Yet he also has the qualities to take him on a long journey to find his birth mother. The other characters in The Snake-Stone, James’ parents, his diving instructor, best friend, the villagers, people he meets on his journey, are pictured realistically.
The turning point: The turning point in the story comes while James’ foster parents are away in London, and he wonders about the identity of his birth mother. The only clue he has is a fossil, “the snake stone” which she left behind along with a note on which she had written: “Take good care of Sammie.” It was written on a torn envelope with parts of an address still there.
The journey: Instead of going to London, James decides to find his birth mother. With help from his geography teacher, James sets out for the remote country village where his mother might be found. James has painful, challenging, but also humorous and happy travels. The mother he finally meets, Anne, has a minor yet powerful voice in the novel. He comes to understand why she left him at a stranger’s door fifteen years before. Although the meeting is not long, it leaves him with a feeling of completeness. As a journey of self-discovery, The Snake-Stone also provides its readers with a happy ending. Its hero says, on returning to his foster parents, “I was home.”
40. What is the main theme of the novel
A. Life with foster parents.
B. Life in the world of diving.
C. A journey of self-discovery.
D. A travel around the country.
41. What do the coach’s words in Paragraph 2 suggest
A. James is a successful diver.
B. James is a hopeful swimmer.

Dr. David Hetherington has spent over a decade looking at the feasibility (可行性) of reintroducing the Eurasian lynx (欧洲猞猁) to Scotland. In his new book, The Lynx and Us, Hetherington takes an in-depth look at the many issues surrounding this topic.
Hetherington begins there introduction discussion by establishing the history and ecology of the lynx, in relation to both human-lynx coexistence and geographical variations in distribution. Habitat and range requirements, prey (猎物) preferences and hunting methods are also detailed.
Armed with this background information, the reader is then taken through the nitty-gritty of lynx reintroduction by addressing the potential issues, many of which are based on human-wildlife conflict, such as safety and the impact of wild lynx, with much of the information backed up by conservation and research findings associated with the reintroductions of lynx in Europe. Hetherington addresses the significant problem of man-made barriers such as roads and rails. There are also considerations regarding prey species that are unused to having natural predators (捕食者) in their midst and the impact on prey populations.
The book looks at the feasibility of lynx reintroduction in the UK. While the reintroduction of lynx to Scotland is shown to be ecologically feasible, how desirable is it Hetherington addresses each of the issues in-turn, using the significant knowledgebase that now exists regarding lynx ecology and the findings of research into lynx and their reintroductions elsewhere.
For anyone with an interest in lynx re wilding, The Lynx and Us is the “go-to” book.

Many people are taking to the skies this summer, planning fantastic vacations after two-plus years of being largely grounded (停飞) by the COVID-19 pandemic. Even if you’re not yet ready to brave crowded airports and long lines, you can still visit some of the world’s great cities from your armchair, with Mark Vanhoenacker as your tour guide.
Vanhoenacker, an airline pilot, wrote in his book, Skyfaring, about the joys of rising above the earth at the controls of a plane. His new book, Imagine a City, moves from the journey to the destination—the far-distant places Vanhoenacker once dreamed about and now gets to see up close when the plane lands. The book also records the author’s own journey from a lonely kid in western Massachusetts to a confident global traveler based in London.
Along the way, he takes us bicycling through Brasilia and birdwatching in Kuwait. Like traveling by air itself, the tour is sometimes confusing. You go to bed reading about Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and wake up to find yourself in Delhi, India. But Vanhoenacker is a sure-handed navigator (领航员), filling in the gaps with history, poems and lots of local color.
While he might be short of the kind of a local’s knowledge that comes from spending a lifetime in a city, Vanhoenacker has the benefit of making short but frequent visits to lots of places, with a pocketful of foreign money and a backpack filled with curiosity.
“When I was young and struggling with my speech disorder, and with whatever else seemed large then, it felt almost lifesaving to be able to travel to my imaginary city, or to imagine myself in a real one that was far enough to feel safe,” he writes.
The new book was written in part during the pandemic, when so much air travel was grounded for the moment.

Writing a book is a long and challenging process, but new technology is increasingly making it easier for authors to finish their books.
Michael Green, a US data scientist-turned-novelist, felt that technology could help him simplify the writing process when he was in the middle of writing his debut (首部) book.
He said that the process had become difficult to manage: “In the midst of editing, I got to the point where I started feeling like I had a lot of plots and characters,” he told the BBC. “I had all these documents on the deeper aspects of the world I was creating. I was worried about being able to keep track of it all. That’s when I switched into my more data science-minded approach to solving a complex problem with a lot of different pieces.”
Green went on to create Lynit, a digital platform to help authors plan and weave together the many elements that form a story, such as themes, characters, and major events.
“As the author gets a new idea that they want to bring into the story, they are able to input it into a natural framework,” he told the BBC. “Piece by piece, they’re adding to the story. As new ideas come in, they change, maybe by creating new nodes (节点), new relationships.”
Once the book has been published, technology is also playing an ever-increasing role in publicity and connecting with readers. Websites and apps from specialist firms allow authors to participate in live question-and-answer sessions with their audience.
Another tech firm, Crazy Maple Studios in California, US, offers authors four apps that can add music, animation, sound effects and in some cases, gameplay.
Michael Green believes technology will become even more important as a new generation of tech-savvy (精通技术的) writers becomes more well-known.
“What I’m finding with the Generation Z and even younger writers is that they’re looking for technology to give them guidance,” he told the BBC. “They see it as a tool to learn and grow with, rather than extra work.”
52. What difficulty did Green face in writing his debut book
A. He would leave out important plots.
B. He had trouble organizing his thoughts.
C. He often felt he was not creative enough.
D. He felt the characters would not attract readers.
53. What is an advantage of technology according to the text
A. It brings authors closer to their readers.
B. It can generate images based on words.
C. It can translate thoughts into sentences.
D. It creates new relationships for authors.
54. Which of the following would Green most probably agree with
A. New technology matters to rising authors.
B. Technology adds to the burden of authors.
C. New technology gets in the way of creativity.
D. Young writers rely too heavily on technology.
55. Where is the passage most likely from

Whether we are young or old, we all have a dream we would love to come true. The issue is that most of us have no idea where to begin to turn a great idea into fact, or that we choose to abandon our dreams when the going gets tough. If this is you, then self-help guide Dream and Achieve: Discover and Express Your Passion in Your Lifetime by Kola Olutimehin should be at the top of your reading list.
Kola, who fittingly describes himself as a “Dream Driver”, has helped thousands of people achieve through his coaching and public speaking, and he has distilled (浓缩) all his wisdom and tried-and-tested methods into this book.
At the beginning of the book, Kola defines what we mean by a “dream”, stating that a dream is a long-cherished vision of what you want to make your inheritance and your contribution to the world. That doesn’t mean that this dream, whatever it may be, is already fully formed in your mind. It may be fuzzy (模糊的); it may just be a feeling that you were born to attain something you don’t currently possess.
What I love in this section of the book is how Kola, who has built his own business empire with blood, sweat and tears, debunks (驳斥) the common myths people associate with becoming a success, such as the need to make decisions with fully detailed plans.
He therefore urges readers, when faced with a decision, to consider the four “Ds”. These are Desire—questioning what you truly want and why you want it; acting on your Decision, which is an active step; Determination, chiefly having the staying power not to backtrack; and Discipline, which means you must continue to act upon your decision to help make your dreams a reality.
In conclusion, author Kola Olutimehin has captured the essence of success and set it down in print, and Dream and Achieve is the one book you need to find your life’s purpose, and achieve it.

Stories of immigrants attract me a lot, especially the life stories of Italians who have come to America since the 1700s. In each of these stories I see elements of my own story, that of leaving my birthplace and family and creating a new life in a different culture and in a different language.
The child of Italian immigrants and an award-winning scholar of Italian literature, in the book My Two Italies Joseph Luzzi struggled to create or find his own identity from an early age. Even more problematic for him was “which” Italy to “choose,” the one he inherited(继承) from his family, poor and linked to old traditions and customs he finds rude and somewhat cruel, or the one he finds in literature and art books that show him a country with a modern literary culture.
The choice becomes even sadder as in his professional life he becomes a scholar of Italian literature and culture. He describes episodes of his youth that show the clash between the first and the second generation immigrants that are both funny and tragicomic(悲喜剧式的). These episodes highlight the daily customs his parents brought from their hometown that are in conflict with Joseph’s desire to “fit in” the American culture. Joseph’s visits to It
