Hi, I’m Rick Steves. If you’ve been with us from the beginning, you’ll know that we began our tour in Amsterdam, walked our way through Germany and Austria, down into Italy, back up through Switzerland and this week we are in Paris. We won’t spend much time at the big attractions. In a tourist destination like Paris, even a new traveler knows to see the famous art museums of Paris and no one misses the Eiffel Tower. But we’re going to some of the places the average tourist misses. For instance, the best view in town may not be from the top of the Eiffel Tower, but from the top of the Montparnasse Tower. The view includes the Eiffel Tower as well as everything else. It’s cheaper and easier to get up here. We can join a ride on a public bus. I like the views from Line 63. Or we can cruise through Paris in one of their river tour boats. To cover more territory, traffic and streets for you, I ride the subway. Many European cities have subway systems, the one in Paris is really amazing. You can go anywhere in town for a reasonable price. And don’t worry, getting lost is cheap. In fact, you could stay underground all day long on one ticket about the cost of a cup of coffee.

A couple of years ago I graduated from art school. After graduation I was unsure of what to do with my degree. I had majored in illustration (插画专业) and loved it, but didn’t really feel interested in doing illustrations for any companies. This left me with few options other than freelance (自由职业的) jobs and taking care of kids for others.
I spent two years working as a baby-sitter, doing freelance illustrations on the side. It just wasn’t quite enough to pay rent, but I loved it, so I worked well over 50 hours a week, trying to keep up with both.
Just under a year ago I went to a friend’s wedding. I couldn’t think of a gift for them and really didn’t have a lot of money to spare, so I used my talents to create a portrait (肖像) for them. It wasn’t much, but I hoped it would be a good gift. When I handed the portrait to them and they unwrapped it, the looks on their faces were something I did not expect. There were joyful tears in their eyes as they cried, “That’s us! This is so beautiful!”
It’s funny because when I was in art school portraits were always my least favourite assignment. I hated drawing people and was always so much more interested in drawing little furry creatures. Once I saw the looks on my friends’ faces after giving them their portrait, it was all over. I suddenly loved portraits and wanted to do more.
I now take portraits to every wedding I go to and have given them as gifts to the families I baby-sit for. Every time the reaction makes all of the hard work and time I put into them so worth it. I’ve just started offering couple, family and pet portraits as an item on my Etsy shop.

The heavy use of fossil fuels over the last 150 years has released massive amounts of greenhouse gases, which has caused the Earth to warm up. Scientists say large amounts of CO2 must be removed from the atmosphere and stored. Plants and trees do this naturally. But there’s so much CO2 in the atmosphere that just planting trees and protecting forests won’t solve the problem. And, when these plants and trees die, the carbon they’ve stored gets released again. That means humans need to come up with ways of removing carbon from the air and storing it. This is called Direct Air Capture(DAC).
A company called Heirloom has just opened the first DAC plant in the United States. Heirloom’s process uses limestone to capture CO2. The company heats up the limestone to separate out the CO2, which is then locked away in concrete. Heirloom uses renewable electricity to produce the heat, so the process doesn’t produce more CO2. The process is extremely expensive though. The new plant can remove 1,000 tons of CO2 a year. That’s a tiny amount compared to how much carbon needs to be removed from the atmosphere.
Graphyte is another US company working on DAC The company collects unwanted plants. It dries this “biomass” completely so that it can’t break down. Graphyte then strikes the dried plants into small bricks which are trapped in a special wrapper and buried deep underground. Graphyte says its process doesn’t use much energy and can work anywhere. The company claims the cost is merely less than $100 to capture a ton of CO2.
Not everyone is excited about carbon removal. Some people worry that it will take too long to make a difference. Others worry that focusing on removing carbon could take attention away from more important climate actions, like switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy. But experts say the decision isn’t to do one or the other. The world needs to end fossil fuel use and pull carbon out of the air.
28. What can be the impact of the death of plants according to Paragraph 1
A. Their leaves take in more carbon.
B. There is an increase of carbon in the air.
C. It leads to the death of animals dependent on them.
D. The carbon they absorb disappears with their death.
29. What is Direct Air Capture
A. A course studying the atmosphere.
B. An association dealing with climate change.
C. A new method beneficial for the environment.
D. A newly developed material for a greener world.
30. In which way does Graphyte outweigh Heirloom
A. Its operation procedures are simpler. B. It achieves its goal at a lower expense.
C. Its products are intended for construction. D. It works with the aid of renewable energy.
31. What do experts mean in the last paragraph
A. It’s necessary to work along both lines. B. Carbon removal is a win-win solution.
C. Environmental issues are about to be resolved. D. Advantages always coexist with disadvantages.
B 29. C 30. B 31. A
根据第一段“And, when these plants and trees die, the carbon they’ve stored gets released again.(当这些植物和树木死亡时,它们储存的碳会再次释放出来)”可知,植物死后,它们释放出碳,这使得空气里的碳含量增加。
根据第一段“That means humans need to come up with ways of removing carbon from the air and storing it. This is called Direct Air Capture(DAC).(这意味着人类需要想出从空气中去除碳并将其储存的方法,这被称为直接空气捕获(DAC))”可推知,Direct Air Capture是一种对环境有益的新方法。故选C。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Graphyte says its process doesn’t use much energy and can work anywhere. The company claims the cost is merely less than $100 to capture a ton of CO2.(Graphyte表示,该工艺不消耗太多能量,可以在任何地方工作。该公司声称,捕获一吨二氧化碳的成本不到100美元)”可知,Graphyte的优势是它以较低的成本实现了目标。故选B。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“But experts say the decision isn’t to do one or the other. The world needs to end fossil fuel use and pull carbon out of the air.(但专家表示,这个决定并不是选择其中之一。世界需要停止使用化石燃料,减少空气中的碳)”可知,有必要双管齐下。故选A。
D
If you’re ever lost in the woods or wilderness, learning some expert skills could keep you alive until rescue comes. Here is what you need to know to start a fire.
So much depends on a good fire, and not just for warmth. The flames keep dangerous animals away and make the meat safe to eat. The smoke from burning lots of green leaves and pine branches can also help you get rescued.
You often need fire most when conditions are the worst. If you haven’t tried rubbing sticks together in a non-survival situation—the friction fire method using a bow drill—chances are good that you’re going to burn precious calories to try but still end up cold.
If you have to pick one way to make fire, you need several critical stuff. “Ferro rods (铈铁棒)”are small metal rods that produce a shower of sparks as hot as 3,000 °F/1,650℃ when struck with a striker or the back of a knife. The rods are perdurable, which can stand thousands of strikes and can get wet and still work. You’ll also need “dry tinder (火绒)”, such as a bunch of dead grasses, or enough very fine wood shavings from branches. Place the tinder on a flat rock. Cotton balls mixed with petrol are ideal since they’ll catch quickly and burn for several minutes. Then gather up wood in a range of sizes for your fire.
To direct the sparks into your tinder, instead of holding the rod still and striking it with a striker or your knife, put the rod against the rock and into your tinder and hold the striker still as you pull the rod away. When you need a lot of sparks, hold the rod firmly against the rock in your tinder and rub the striker back and forth to generate sparks. Once you have a flame, add your larger tree branches in a tent shape, gradually adding bigger pieces of wood until you have an established fire.
32. What is true when it comes to being unable to try the friction fire method beforehand
A. You will miss the chance to get enough heat.
B. You are sure to encounter the most deadly condition.
C. You are pretty likely to fail to start a fire finally despite efforts.
D. You will easily lose your physical strength due to the cold weather.
33. What does the underlined word “perdurable” mean in Paragraph 4
A. Time-consuming. B. Hard-wearing. C. Eye-catching. D. Easy-changing.
34. What needs to be done to get abundant sparks
A. Holding the rod still in the air and striking it.
B. Rubbing against the rod again and again with tinder.
C. Placing the rod on the tinder and striking the tinder nonstop.
D. Pushing and pulling a striker repeatedly on the rod placed in the tinder.
35. What is the suitable title for the text
A. Build a Fire in the Wild
B. Survive in Tough Conditions
C. Defend Yourself Against Fire
D. Strike the Iron While It is Hot
C 33. B 34. D 35. A
根据第三段中的“If you haven’t tried rubbing sticks together in a non-survival situation-the friction fire method using a bow drill-chances are good that you’re going to burn precious calories to try but still end up cold. (如果你没有尝试过在无法生存的情况下将木棍摩擦在一起——用弓钻摩擦火法——很有可能你会燃烧宝贵的卡路里来尝试,但最终还是会感到寒冷。)”可知,如果事先没有尝试过摩擦取火方法,你有可能费很大力气反而结果不成功。故选C。
【33题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词后边的定语从句“which can stand thousands of strikes and can get wet and still work. (可以承受成千上万次的撞击,即使被弄湿了也能工作。)”可知,它可以承受数千次击打,而且即使湿了也能用。由此可知,划线词的意思是“耐用的”。A.
根据第五段“When you need a lot of sparks, hold the rod firmly against the rock in your tinder and rub the striker back and forth to generate sparks. (当你需要大量的火花时,把金属棒紧紧地靠在火绒中的岩石上,来回摩擦撞锤以产生火花。)”可知,在放入火绒里的金属棒上反复推拉撞锤可以获得丰富的火花。故选D。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据文章第一段“If you’re ever lost in the woods or wilderness, learning some expert skills could keep you alive until rescue comes. Here is what you need to know to start a fire. (如果你在森林或荒野中迷路了,学习一些专业技能可以让你活到救援到来。以下是你需要知道的生火技巧。)”可知,文章讲述了在野外怎样生火。所以A项“Build a Fire in the Wi1ld (在野外生火)”适合做标题。故选A。

上文“People-pleasing behavior can lead to mental and physical health problems such as fear of rejection, anger, headaches or high blood pressure. It can result in weak boundaries, problems with decision-making, low self-worth, dependency, and low competence.(取悦他人的行为会导致精神和身体健康问题,比如害怕被拒绝、愤怒、头痛或高血压。它会导致边界薄弱、决策困难、自我价值感低、依赖性和能力低下。)”讲述取悦他人的弊端,因此推断空处应该涉及纠正取悦他人这种做法,下一句“You can achieve it by consistently integrating the following strategies in life.( 你可以通过在生活中不断地整合以下策略来实现它。)”
下文“That means that people will still be there for you even if you have not searched for ways to do something to please them.(这意味着,即使你没有寻找方法来做些事去取悦他们,人们仍然会在你身边。)”
上文“Remind yourself that you don’t have to please everyone with your decisions, just yourself.(提醒自己,你不必用你的决定取悦所有人,只需要取悦你自己。)”说明你无需取悦别人,下文“If someone else has an opinion, it’s their responsibility to state it, not your responsibility to mind read.(如果其他人有想法,他们自己负责陈述,而不是你负责读他们的心思。)”
根据下文“If you’re a people-pleaser, you may find it hard to decline because you feel it comes across as cruel or uncaring. But it absolutely does not have to. Confident and mindful communication is more honest and can be done in a firm yet respectful way. (如果你是一个取悦他人的人,你可能会发现很难拒绝,因为你觉得这给人一种残忍或漠不关心的印象。但这绝对不是必须的。自信和有意识的沟通更诚实,可以以坚定而尊重的方式进行。)”和下文的例子“Try statements like: “I would really love to be able to help you, but unfortunately, I’m already committed to something else.”(试试这样的话:‘我真的很想帮助你,但不幸的是,我已经致力于其他事情了。’)” 故选A。

Honesty and integrity are Mandy’s habits, and she always follows the Golden Rule: “Do not do to others what you don’t want others to do to you.” But when she recalled her past conduct, her face burned with shame. When many selfish and unfriendly small things came back to her memory, a shy expression appeared on her face. She resolved to follow the Golden Rule.
On a Saturday evening, when Mandy went to Mr. Moore’s inn as usual to collect the money for her mother’s laundry for him, totaling one hundred pounds, she found that Mr. Moore was obviously very angry with some horse dealers who he had been bargaining with. He held an open money bag in his hand, filled with notes, and hardly noticed Mandy’s request for the money. He yelled at her because she disturbed him while he was busy. He casually handed some money to Mandy.
Mandy was glad to get rid of the chaos and quickly went out. She stopped and safely put the money in her wallet, only to find that he had given her two hundred pounds instead of one hundred pounds. She looked around. No one approached, and her first feeling was the joy of winning an unexpected award.
“This is all mine,” she said to herself. “I will use it to buy a new coat for my mother. I wonder if I can also buy a pair of shoes for my brother Tom.”
At that moment, she remembered that Mr. Moore must have given it to her by mistake. But the greedy voice whispered, “He gave it to you. How do you know he hasn’t intended to give it as a gift Keep it! He will never know because he has too many such notes in that big money bag.”

This conflict between doing good and bad things was going on in her mind. She repeatedly balanced the comforts the money would buy against the harm of wronging Mr. Moore. Suddenly the Golden Rule “Do not do to others what you do not want others to do to you” sounded in her ears like a trumpet. Turning around as if flying from some unseen danger, the child rushed along the road until she found herself once again in front of the inn. “What do you want now ” asked the rude old man, doubtfully. He stared at Mandy as he saw the tears rolling down her cheeks.
“Sir, you paid me two hundred pounds instead of one,” she handed him the extra money. “Two hundred Did I Let me see; well, so I did,” Mr. Moore said. Realizing he had made a mistake and that Mandy was doing a good deed, Mr. Moore felt grateful to Mandy. He told Mandy to keep the extra money as a reward of her honesty. “No, sir, thank you. I do not want to keep the money that doesn’t belong to me,” said Mandy. Mandy returned to her humble home with a light heart. She was determined that for the future, both in great things and small, she would always remember and follow the Golden Rule.

Graphyte is another US company working on DAC. The company collects unwanted plants.
