Every year, some middle schools host work experience program for
students. They try to provide each student with an opportunity to learn in a
real work environment. Here is the experience program at Skip Garden.
In the morning, the teacher told them knowledge about plants and
flowers. Also, the teacher showed them how to renew the soil and sow
seeds. They learned it in biology books before, but they didn’t know it was
so interesting. The gardening experience gave them an idea of how science is
quite closely linked(联系) to gardening.
In the afternoon, students went to the kitchen and learnt how to build a
pizza oven. The teacher taught the students something about building and
how to use different kinds of tools.
In the evening, there was a daily meeting. Everyone was there to share
their ideas. In this way students can learn from peers and it’s also a good
chance to express themselves.
Students learned many different things at Skip Garden. Some of them
even seriously considered getting a job at Skip Garden.

Turning soil(翻土), pulling weeds, and harvesting cabbage sound
like hard work for middle and high school kids. But it is a school program at
four low-income schools. The program-Urban Sprouts was started by Abby Jaramillo and another teacher. It aims to help students develop science skills, environmental awareness, and healthy lifestyles.
Jaramillo’s students live in neighborhoods where fresh food and green
space are not easy to find and fast-food restaurants outnumber(超过)
grocery stores. “The kids usually come to school with bags of snacks and
large bottles of soft drinks,” she says.
“Many think vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects are
awful.”
Urban Sprouts classes, at two middle schools and two high schools,
include hands-on experiments such as soil testing, flower-and-seed
dissection, tastings of fresh or dried produce and work in the garden.
Several times a year, students cook the vegetables they grow. And they
occasionally make salads for the whole schools, maybe four or five times a
year.
Program evaluations show that kids eat more vegetables as a result of the
classes. “We have students who say they went home and talked to their
parents and now they’re eating differently,”Jaramillo says.
She adds that the program’s benefits go beyond nutrition(营养).
Some students get so interested in gardening that they bring home seeds to
start their own vegetable gardens. Besides, working in the garden seems to
have a calming effect on Jaramillo’s special education students, many of
whom have emotional control issues. “They get outside,” she says,
“and they feel successful.”

Labor(劳动) education has received more and more attention in
recent years. It is very close to our lives.
As students, doing housework is the best form of labor. But some
people think that students only need to study hard and should not waste time
doing housework. I think this idea is wrong. Here are my reasons.
● First, teachers often ask students to clean the classroom at school.
This is because school teaches not only knowledge, but also how to adapt
to(适应) society. The same is true for the family. Doing housework
shows duty to the family.
● Second, doing housework can help us develop a hard-working
spirit and help you learn some labor skills. In the future, these will be
helpful to us.
● Finally, the purpose of getting knowledge is to learn the skills we
will need in the future. The more skills students have, the better they are.
No one wants to be useless in the society.
President Xi Jinping once said, “The people’s life lies in hard
work, and hard work leads to prosperity(繁荣).” The same is true for
students. Labor education is also the first test for us to enter society.
1.What is very close to our lives?
2.Does the writer agree with the idea that students shouldn’t waste time doing
housework?
Labor education./Labor education is very close to our lives.
No, the writer disagrees with it.
3.Why do teachers often ask students to clean the classroom at school?
4.What’s the purpose of getting knowledge?
5.How many reasons does the writer show in this passage?
Because the school teaches not only knowledge, but also how to
adapt to society.
The purpose of getting knowledge is to learn the skills we will need in
the future.
Three./The writer shows three reasons in this passage.
