回答问题(节选自英格兰银行官网)
How Much Gold Is Kept in the Bank of England?
Our gold vaults(金库) hold around 400,000 bars of gold, worth
over £200 billion. That makes the Bank of England the second largest
keeper of gold in the world (the New York Federal Reserve is the largest).
In the past, you could exchange banknotes(钞票) for the same value in
gold at the Bank of England, but this has not been possible since the early
1930s. You can, however, hold a real gold bar in the Bank of England
Museum. The gold bar is kept in a glass box with a hole, through which you
can put your hand inside. You can touch and hold the gold.
No gold has ever been stolen from our vaults. However, there is a
story that suggests that we had a “lucky escape”(侥幸脱险) in
Victorian times. In 1836, the Directors of the Bank of England received an
anonymous letter. The writer didn’t tell who he was, but said he could get
into the gold vaults, and offered to meet them in the gold vault at an hour of
their choosing.
The Directors finally decided to meet him one night in the vault. That
night the man popped up(出现) through some of the floor boards. He was
a sewerman(通渠工). He discovered an old drain(下水道) and the
drain just ran under the gold vault. The Directors found that he hadn’t taken
any gold. For his honesty, the Bank of England rewarded(奖励) him
with a gift of £800. This would be worth about £90,000 in today’s
money.

Dear Sir / Madam,
I am writing to tell you about a bad experience I just had in your store.
Yesterday morning (July 15) I bought a shirt from your store. It was a red
shirt, size 12 and it cost $150. When I got home and took it out of the bag,
the sleeve (袖子) was almost off. I had traveled home by subway with the
bag and treated it carefully.
I went back to the store in the afternoon on the same day to return the
shirt and exchange it for another one. The shop assistant refused to exchange
it or return my money. She told me that I must have worn it and caused the
damage. I told her that was impossible. She still refused to give back my
money.
I have bought things from your store many times. I am really
disappointed with your shop assistant. I look forward to hearing from you and
working out this problem as soon as possible.
Yours sincerely,
Hillary

Online shopping is now ingrained(根深蒂固的) in our day-to-day
lives. Whatever you want, you can order most of them online and get them
right to your door. A report from the US Census Bureau found that in the first
three months of 2022, about $250 billion was spent in retail e-commerce
(零售电商) sales. However, buying what you want from the Internet
wasn’t so common years ago. So how did we come to the point where online
shopping became a way of life?
In 1984, in Gateshead, England, a 72-year-old grandmother named
Jane Snowball sat down in her armchair and used her TV remote control(遥
控器) to place an order of cornflakes(玉米片) and eggs. Then her
shopping list was on her TV screen. Later her goods were sent to her door,
like magic. In 1994, Amazon (similar to Taobao) was born, but it sold
mostly books at that time. And eBay followed in 1995.Rakuten, Japan’s
biggest e-commerce site launched two years later. There came China’s
Alibaba in 1999.
Nowadays online shopping is becoming surprisingly popular because it
makes life so easy. Take China for example, you can download different
kinds of APPs like Taobao or JD in your phone and start your online shopping
journey.

Online shopping has been popular in our daily lives. I like to shop
online, too. Last week, I helped my grandpa buy an iPhone online.
The next day, the iPhone was sent to our house.
I think online shopping is really good for us. First, online
shopping makes our life easier. We can buy almost everything without
going out, especially in hot summer. Second, sometimes, we can
spend less money when we buy online.
However, we should protect our personal information. In this
way, we can shop online safely and happily.
