1.fire作名词,意为“火;火灾”。fireman/firefighter意为“消防员”, fire station意为“消防站”。另外,fire也可作动词,意为“点火;开火;解雇”。如:
The house is on fire.房子着火了。
I started a fire.我升起了一堆火。
You can't fire her.你不能解雇她。
Wet things will not fire.湿东西不会燃烧。
2.painting作名词,意为“油画;绘画”,它是动词paint的动名词形式。动名词是由动词加后缀-ing变成的名词,它既具有动词的性质,又具有名词的性质,因此叫动名词。这类词常见的还有meeting、building、swimming、saying等。
3.There were so many interesting things to see. 有很多有趣的东西可以看。
so作副词,意为“如此;这样;这么;那么”。如:
It was so much fun.太好玩了。
But the weather was so cold.但是天气太冷了。
另外,so也常作连词,意为“所以”。如:
It was raining here too, so we didn't go to the countryside.这里也在下雨,所以我们没有去乡下。
