I was appreciating my family photos on my computer, admiring my two beautiful babies when I found a disturbing scene:my laptop was in almost all the pictures. There was my daughter,8 months old, playing at my feet while I was typing on the couch. There was my son, with a big transformer,on my left arms.
I’d heard about the Internet addiction before, but I always thought it was something only limited to playing too much World of Warcraft(a computer game) day and night. Now,it seemed my Internet-habit is slowly but surely crossing the line. Sometimes I find myself up at midnight, surfing the Web while my family are sleeping. I read news, keep up with friends and write my blog…just for something to do.
It turns out that I’m not the only mama who is addicted to the computer. These mums are contributing to a growing global addiction. There’s a movement among psychiatrists(doctors who specialise in mental diseases) to recognise the Internet addiction as an official mental disorder. And a recent Stanford University national survey found that 14 percent of Internet users find it hard to stay away from it for several days at a time;9 percent try to hide their unnecessary Internet use from their loved ones;8 percent admit they use the Web as a way to escape problems.
You’re not likely the kind of addict who doesn’t bathe and abuses drugs to help her stay up for more online time. You may have noticed, though, that going online has become a necessary part of your life, which,at least, means a box of clothes go unwashed. It may also mean you’re missing much time with your baby — something you probably do care about.
( )1.From Paragraph 1,we can conclude that ________.
A.the author was busy taking care of her babies
B.the author’s job had something to do with computers
C.the author was not good at taking photos of her babies
D.the author looked after her babies while using the computer
( )2.The author used to think that the Internet addiction is ________.
A.using the web at midnight
B.keeping up with friends online
C.spending too much time online
D.being addicted to computer games
( )3.In medical terms,the Internet addiction is ________.
A.a personal life habit
B.a way to escape problems
C.an official mental disorder
D.the unnecessary use of the Internet
( )4.What does the author want to express in the last but one paragraph
A.Many women still can control their online time.
B.The Internet addiction influences housewives’ lives a lot.
C.Going online has become a necessary part of women’s lives.
D.Many people don’t realise that they are addicted to the Internet.

(2023云南高一统考期末)From the time I was seven, I had a dream of becoming a member of the Students’ Union. I always admired my school leaders for taking responsibility for all of us. So I dreamed of being a leader.
Years flew by, and soon I was able to take part in the elections, hoping I would win. But the reality struck me that I hadn’t had a chance. I wasn’t pretty. Girls across the school hardly knew me. I just did not have what it took to win a school election. I was upset.
As I cried in my room that evening, I suddenly took a deep breath and decided I wouldn’t stop dreaming. I decided that I would enter for elections again in my final year at school — and I would win.
I recognised that my competitors had a lot of things in their favour. What were the points that would work in my favour I had good grades, and I was friendly and helpful. And my biggest strength was the faith I had. I would not allow my plain appearance to hold me back from putting my best foot forward. That evening, I began my election plans a whole year in advance.
I realised that girls would have to get to know me and recognise that I had the ability to represent them. I loved making friends and I liked being helpful, so I decided that perhaps I could use these qualities to work to my advantage. In order to learn how to give a great election speech, I also attended a course on public speaking. When the election came, I had a good speech and I delivered it with more confidence than I had the year before.

I stood in the lecture hall with my friends, all of us anxiously waiting for the announcement. “Would my efforts pay off Would I accomplish my goal of being one of the leaders?” When the headmaster finally walked onto the stage, my heart beat fast. “The winner of this year’s Students’ Union Leader is …” The headmaster paused, building suspense. I held my breath, hoping that my name would be called. And then, to my amazement, I heard it. I had won!
Suddenly, I realised that I had achieved more than I had dreamed of. __________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Suddenly, I realised that I had achieved more than I had dreamed of. Winning the election wasn’t just about the title or the recognition. Actually, I had made many new friends and had helped people along the way. I had also won the acceptance and love of my schoolmates and they knew me as somebody who would stand by them. I was able to put a smile on their faces and brighten up their day. I realised that just by being me and going by my dream, I had already made a difference.UNIT 9 LEARNING

A Device That Easily Opens Bottles
To find a solution for her grandmother who had difficulty in opening bottles, Alana looked at existing bottle openers and then she created her own.
She used a piece of wood shaped like a cellphone. Next, she made three holes of different sizes in the wood so that they could match common bottle cap sizes. Each hole also had a layer of dried, sticky hot glue, which provided a firm grip for the bottle caps. With a simple twist of the device, her grandmother could open bottles without help.

There is a popular belief among parents that schools are no longer interested in spelling. No school I have ever taught in has ever ignored spelling or considered it unimportant. There are, however, different ideas about how to teach it, or how much priority(优先) it must be given over general language development and writing ability. The problem is how to encourage a child to express himself freely and confidently in writing without holding him back with the complexities of spelling. That’s why teachers often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than spelling.
If spelling becomes the only focus of his teacher’s interest, clearly a bright child will be likely to “play safe”. He will tend to write only words within his spelling range, choosing to avoid adventurous language.
I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a piece of writing about a personal experience. “This work is terrible! There are far too many spelling mistakes and your writing is terrible. ” It may have been a sharp comment on the pupil’s spelling in writing, but it was also a sad sign that the teacher had failed to read the composition, which contained some beautiful expressions of the child’s deep feelings. The teacher was not wrong to draw attention to the mistakes, but if his priorities had centred on the child’s ideas, an expression of his disappointment with the spelling would have given the pupil more encouragement to seek improvement.
( )14.Teachers are different in their opinions about ________.
A.the difficulties in teaching spelling
B.the complexities of the basic writing skills
C.the role of spelling in general language development and writing ability
D.the necessity of teaching spelling

A.fair B.unreasonable
C.amusing D.careless
( )16.What’s the major point discussed in the passage
A.The importance of developing writing skills.
B.The complexities of spelling.
C.The relationship between spelling and the content of a composition.
D.The correct way of marking compositions.

(2023甘肃兰州高一校考期末)Many people in the UK have poor mathematical skills. Dr Richard Pike, a member of Royal Society of Chemistry, said that mathematical questions in entrance tests to British universities were much too simple.
About two thirds of British universities now offer special courses in mathematics to new students. The courses are necessary because new students do not know enough mathematics when they leave high school. A university said that there was a serious risk that there would not be enough scientists and engineers coming out of British universities in the future.
New university students are bad at mathematics. So are a lot of other people in Britain. A survey found that 7 million people in England were bad at mathematics. It is necessary to help people improve their math skills, which are important in lots of ways.
One problem is that many students do not want to study math because they think it is a difficult subject. They want to have high grades in their A levels. High A level grades are necessary in order to go to university. This is one reason why students do not choose to study mathematics at A level. Sometimes schools also prefer students to study easier subjects instead of mathematics. A school will have a better reputation if more students pass A level exams.
Another problem is that some educated people think mathematics is not important. They think it is not a creative subject. The way of thinking is very dangerous. When people do not understand mathematics, they are not able to make proper judgments about important questions. Nowadays, people use the Internet to find scientific questions. But they don’t understand science. They cannot judge the value of the information which they find. People will become very ignorant if they don’t study mathematics and science.
( )17.What is the text mainly about
A.Mathematics problems in the UK.
B.Simple exams for British students.
C.Unscientific course structure in the UK.
D.Problems of British high school students.
( )18.Many universities in Britain offer math courses because ________.
A.students hope to learn more about mathematics skills
B.students’ parents want them to continue math study
C.students do not learn enough mathematics in high school
D.students are expected to be scientists or engineers
( )19.We can learn from Paragraph 4 that ________.
A.students think mathematics is not important
B.schools ask all students to pass A level exams
C.schools encourage students to study mathematics
D.students are afraid to study mathematics at A level
( )20.What can we infer about people who are bad at mathematics
A.They can’t make any achievement in some creative work.
B.They can’t make correct decisions on some important issues.
C.They can properly use the Internet to look for information.
D.They can gain the respect of students who are bad at mathematics.

While I was growing up, I often heard my teachers say, “Oh, Tina is gifted in algebra. ” While watching the Olympics, my parents would say, “These gymnasts are born with such ability. ” Statements like these made me believe people were born with certain talents and if they didn’t have a particular one at birth, then they never would. Therefore, I rarely focused on algebra. Nobody told me that if you keep trying and trying, one day a difficult task will seem easy.
Actually, I learnt this from my young daughter, Samaya. One day, I was finishing some paperwork and I said, “Oh no, how could I have made that mistake!” Samaya instantly said, “Mum, don’t worry. Mistakes make your brain grow bigger. ”
Actually, we all need to be reminded that mistakes or failures are just fine and that they are a huge part of growth and success. However, the regular belief is the opposite. We must correct this with our children. We must encourage them to make mistakes because that means they are trying out new ideas.
Billionaire Sara Blakely, founder of the shapewear business Spanx, has seen many failures. She made a living by selling fax machines for seven years. Knocking on many doors and making a lot of mistakes was a journey she calls educational. Sara Blakely owes her risk-taking skills to the weekend talk she had with her father.
As a child, her father would ask her the same question every weekend. “What did you fail at this week, Sara?” He did not care how high her scores were. He wanted to know what she had tried but failed at. When she told him about her failures and mistakes, he would give her a high five. He was reprogramming her mind to believe that mistakes and failures are fine.
So go ahead and ask yourself and your children, “What did we fail at this week?”
( )1.What discouraged the author from efforts in algebra
A.She wasn’t interested in it.
B.She thought she was not gifted.
C.She thought it was useless.

B.Failure is a path to success.
C.Mistakes are not acceptable.
D.Encouragement is significant.
( )3.Why did Sara’s father keep asking her the same question
A.To rebuild her mindset.
B.To keep her from failures.
C.To know what she hadn’t tried.

Here’s my own list of positive reasons to homeschool.
__1__
Most of the homeschooled kids I know have their own particular passions and areas that they can discuss like an expert. Very few of these areas — modern art,Legos and analysing horror films — are the kind of things students learn about in school. I know from my own school experience that having an offbeat(不寻常的) interest doesn’t win you points from teachers and other students. __2__
It teaches kids how to interact with adults.
__3__ It didn’t help that the only adults I saw all day were always looking down on me and telling me what to do. When homeschoolers interact with adults in the community, they learn how civil people treat each other in public. It’s a kind of socialisation most school kids don’t experience until they’re ready to go out into the world.
It also brings parents and kids closer together.
When I was looking into homeschooling for the first time, one of the greatest selling points was heard from parents of the homeschooled students that their teens never felt the need to push them away. __4__ In fact, homeschooled teens are often more ready for adult life than their traditionally schooled peers.
It adapts to the family’s schedule.
No getting up before dawn to take the school bus. No worrying about whether to take a family trip because it means missing classes. __5__ And it gives them the freedom to do the important things in their lives,on their own schedule.
A.Sure,they develop independence.
B.It lets kids show their enthusiasm.
C.Kids can do what they want to do at home.
D.As a kid,I was really shy around grown-ups.
E.It is wrong for them to be late for school every day.

(2023广西玉林高一校考期末)Tourists visiting La Gomera and EI Hierro in the Canary-Islands can often hear locals communicating over long distances by whistling — not a tune, but the Spanish language. The locals are communicating in Silbo, a whistled Spanish language.
Whistled languages are almost developed in rough, mountainous regions or in thick forest. That’s because whistled speech carries much farther than ordinary speech or shouting. As a result, whistled speech can be understood up to 10 times as far away as ordinary shouting. That lets people communicate even when they cannot easily approach close enough to shout. On La Gomera, for example, a few traditional shepherds(牧羊人) still whistle to one another across mountain valleys that could take hours to cross.
Whistled languages work because many of the key elements of speech can be produced in a whistle, says Meyer. We distinguish one speech sound from another by small differences in their sound frequency patterns. A long “e”, for example, is formed higher in the mouth than a long “o”, giving it a higher sound.
To language scientists, such languages are more than just a curiosity. By studying whistled languages, they hope to learn more about how our brains get meaning from the complex sound patterns of speech. Whistling may even provide a chance to know one of the most dramatic jump forward in human evolution(进化): the origin of language itself.
Despite their interest to both language experts and casual observers, whistled languages are disappearing rapidly all over the world, and some, such as the whistled form of the Tepehua language in Mexico, have already disappeared. “…now you still find whistled speech only in places that are very, very remote, that have had less contact with modernity and less access to roads,” Meyer says.
Fortunately, there is still hope. UNESCO, the UN cultural organisation, has listed two whistled languages, Silbo, and a whistled Turkish, as the world’s cultural heritage. Such attention can lead to conservation efforts.
( )1.What led to the development of whistled languages
A.Geographic inaccessibility.
B.Rapid increase in tourism.
C.Greater information capacity.
D.Interest of language experts.
( )2.Why are a long “e” and a long “o” mentioned in Paragraph 3
A.To show what key elements speech has.
B.To explain the differences between speech sound frequency patterns.
C.To prove the popularity of whistled language in the world.
D.To compare whistled languages with ordinary languages.
( )3.What might be a reason for the disappearance of whistled languages according to Meyer
A.Construction of cities. B.Lack of attention.
C.Expansion of other cultures. D.Modernisation.
( )4.What is the best title for the passage
A.How to Use Whistled Languages
B.Why Whistled Languages Disappeared

D.Why Whistled Languages Matter

根据第二段中的 “Whistled languages are almost developed …speech or shouting. ”以及第五段中的“’… find whistled languages only in places … Meyer says.

故填from。
根据空前的“can provide”和空后的“greater understanding of other cultures and perspectives”可知,此处缺少冠词,表示泛指,且“greater”以辅音音素开头,应用a。故填a。
故填to communicate。
9.that/which 考查定语从句。 故填that/which。
UNIT 9 Period Four

(2023河北邯郸高一下学期期末)Lately, there has been a lot of discussion among parents, educators, and within the community that reading is a lost art. We hear people crying that books are dead or that technology is changing how we get our information. Thankfully, however, book sales are rebounding(回升) and literature is far from dead. That’s great news, because science has proven that there are many ways that reading is beneficial to our lives and brain development.
The benefits of reading range anywhere from reducing stress, to developing our brains, to improving memory, and helping increase emotional intelligence. For parents, this is especially important to note, because empathy(共情) is among the five most important skills for success for people living in a digital and global economy. Our kids, who are digital natives, are going to be required to explore a world that requires them to have emotional intelligence to succeed.
In addition to helping children develop critical thinking and writing skills, research has long been telling us that reading fiction can develop empathy and emotional intelligence. Surprisingly, the actual art of reading isn’t capable of producing this surprising reaction. Children don’t develop emotional understanding by focusing on mechanics. Instead, there is hard evidence that reading literary fiction improves emotional intelligence.
Stories allow readers to bury themselves in the life of another person and see the world through their eyes. This has always been a good way to broaden a child’s outlook, but now we actually have the research and science to say it makes us more empathetic. For example, studies published before uncovered that participants who read literature with strong characters showed higher levels of empathy and emotional intelligence by being able to “feel” the characters. The subjects of these studies were better able to understand others by empathising with characters and viewing the world in their different ways.
( )1.What does the author mainly want to tell us in Paragraph 1
A.Reading is a lost art.
B.Reading has a great influence on us.
C.Book sales are going up again.
D.Technology leads to the death of books.
( )2.What benefit do children get from reading
A.Succeeding in their career.
B.Bringing back their memories.
C.Gaining popularity in the digital world.
D.Enabling them to be emotionally intelligent.
( )3.What evidence shows reading literary fiction improves emotional intelligence
A.The change of the readers’ values.
B.The readers’ devotion to reading stories.
C.The development of the readers’ critical thinking skills.
D.The readers’ ability to understand the characters in stories.
( )4.What is a suitable title for the text
A.Why Reading Will Never Die
B.How Children Develop Good Reading Habits

D.What Parents Can Do to Improve Kids’ Emotional Intelligence

Several studies have shown that engaging students’ arts strength increases their motivation when it comes to STEM activities. __4__ Furthermore, for kids who might be turned off from STEM subjects due to a dislike of numbers, highlighting the artistic component of lessons can reach out and draw them in.
While they seem to be opposed, both sides of this argument may have the right idea. __5__ Consider the growing field of computer animation, where you must have both artistic abilities and strong technology fields. Ⅰ.
More and more English-educated Chinese Singaporean parents are realising the importance for their children to be not only good at the all-important English language, but also at Chinese. China has become a great political and economic superpower and they want their children to become bilingual.
It is common knowledge that,to master any language, especially one’s mother tongue, one must begin from childhood. But there are challenges and barriers for children of English-speaking homes to succeed in their journey towards bilingualism.
Take my family as an example. While my wife and I are products of English education,we had some foundation in Chinese which we kept up in our working life. But the language of communication in our home is mainly English.
We are glad that our three children had between 8 and 11 years’ Chinese schooling before switching over to English schools. Their foundation in Chinese has become an advantage in their adult life. They can hold their own in the spoken language, but would find it hard to write a business letter in Chinese for lack of usage.
We have a grandson who will be two years old shortly. His parents have given us the unenviable(艰难的) task of making him bilingual. It is a very tough assignment,as we are with him only a couple of hours on most days. For the rest of the time,he is being surrounded by English sounds by his busy parents.
Fortunately, our perseverance is paying off. After eight months,he has been used to hearing Chinese sounds, and even he can now quite comfortably identify common everyday objects in Chinese.

A.a person who knows English
