Ⅱ.七选五
Do you believe in aliens?During the 1980s,hundreds of mysterious circles appeared in fields all over England. Many people thought they were created by aliens from outer space. What were these circles?__1__
Scaring Circles
Hundreds of geometrical patterns appeared in the middle of English wheat fields like magic. The most common theory was that they were made by spaceships. Two scientists,Pete Delgado and Colin Andrews, became crazy about the subject.__2__ By the end of the 1980s,crop circles had become a mystery;and there were regular reports in the press and on television.
Conflict
__3__ Some believed the circles had been caused by animals such as deer, while others claimed the circles were caused by helicopters.Specialists thought the symbols were from ancient writings. However,no one could really offer a convincing explanation.Eventually, the Koestler Foundation offered 5,000 pounds for a definitive solution.
The Peak
1990 was the golden year for the crop circles.Delgado and Andrews released their bestseller Circular Evidence. And a team of scientists arrived to record circle-making in action. That year, the crop circles were even more complex than the ones before. The hit of the year came on 12 July when a huge circle appeared in a field at Alton Barnes.__4__ But the mystery was about to be settled.
An Explanation
One day that same year,a group of famous circle exports set up monitoring equipment on a hill in Wiltshire.__5__ Amazingly, the next day six circles appeared in a field just below them, without the team recording anything.Worse still, when the researchers entered the circles, they found man-made tools in the centre of each circle, which seemed to prove that the circles had been made by humans.
A.And who had made them
B.The answers puzzled many people.
C.Crop specialists were as confused as ever.
D.Since then,a great many more crop circles have appeared.
E.They were hoping to record the formation of a crop circle.
F.Apart from the alien theories, there were other suggestions too.
G.They were convinced the circles were the work of an “unknown intelligence”.
1.A 根据上文“Many people thought they were created by aliens from outer space. What were these circles?” 故选A项。
2.G 根据上文“Two scientists,Pete Delgado and Colin Andrews,became crazy about the subject.”
3.F 根据下文“Some believed the circles had been caused by animals such as deer, while others claimed the circles were caused by helicopters.”
4.C 根据上文“That year, the crop circles were even more complex than the ones before. The hit of the year came on 12th July when a huge circle appeared in a field at Alton Barnes.”

(2022年浙江高考)For nearly a decade now,Merebeth has been a self-employed pet transport specialist. Her pet transport job was born of the financial crisis(危机) in the late 2000s.The downturn hit the real estate(房地产) firm where she had worked for ten years as an office manager. The firm went broke and left her looking for a new job.One day, while driving near her home, she saw a dog wandering on the road, clearly lost. She took it home, and her sister in Denver agreed to take it.This was a loving home for sure, but 1,600 miles away.It didn’t take long for Merebeth to decide to drive the dog there herself. It was her first road trip to her new job.
Merebeth’s pet delivery service also satisfies her wanderlust. It has taken her to every state in the US except Montana,Washington and Oregon, she says proudly. If she wants to visit a new place, she will simply find a pet with transport needs there. She travels in all weathers. She has driven through 55 mph winds in Wyoming, heavy flooding and storms in Alabama and total whiteout conditions in Kansas.
This wanderlust is inherited from her father, she says. She moved their family from Canada to California when she was one year old, because he wanted them to explore a new place together. As soon as she graduated from high school she left home to live on Catalina Island off the Californian coast, away from her parents, where she enjoyed a life of sailing and off-road biking.
It turns out that pet transporting pays quite well at about $30,000 per year before tax.She doesn’t work in summer,as it would be unpleasantly hot for the animals in the car, even with air conditioning. As autumn comes, she gets restless — the same old wanderlust returning. It’s a call she must handle alone, though.Merebeth says,“When I am on the road,I’m just in my own world.I’ve always been independent-spirited and I just feel strongly that I must help animals.”
1.Why did Merebeth change her job

As they have with so many other industries, apps are shaking up the weight loss business, including big-name companies like Nutrisystem and Weight Watchers(WW).And it’s basically because more consumers feel the way Jessica Holloway-Haytcher does.
A couple of years ago,she tried diet shakes. She hated them. She also hired a personal trainer — but his schedule never matched hers. She spent $600 a month on programmes that didn’t last long. She says she couldn’t keep up with the “astronomical” costs.
Now Holloway-Haytcher uses an app called Noom. She has lost over 30 pounds so far by changing her habits. She now prepares healthy meals in the morning,so she’s not starving at night;she focuses on conversations to slow her eating. The app also helps her track meals, exercise and keep in touch with an online coach. It is always with her,and works with her busy schedule as the owner of a staffing firm in Kennewick,Washington.
When it comes to weight loss,80 percent of people try to do it on their own.Says John LaRosa, president of Marketdata, which tracks the $4 billion commercial U.S.weight loss industry. He says apps like MyFitnessPal,Fitbit and Fooducate appeal to those consumers.LaRosa says apps are also cheaper than most commercial programmes and they appeal to the younger population that traditional chains have struggled to attract.
“The average age of a customer of Jenny Craig,or Nutrisystem or WW is about 48 and it’s probably going up.” LaRosa says.“It’s going to be a shrinking market if they just cater to the baby boomers.”
That explains why WW improved its digital tactic.“It used to be that we hesitated to even show the app in our commercials, and that has so shifted.” says Debra Benovitz,a senior vice president of WW.“I think the future is being a really strong science-based technology partner in the health and wellness space. However, having physical stores is still our biggest difference from upstarts that are completely digital.”
1.What do we know about Jessica Holloway-Hayicher’s past weight loss experiences
A.They made her very busy.
B.They were within her budget.
C.They were efforts made in vain.
D.They lasted altogether for a month.
2.What is the benefit Noom brings to Jessica Holloway-Haytcher
A.It prepares her meals.
B.It records her eating speed.
C.It assists her with her office work.
D.It enables her to consult a coach at any time.
3.How is WW different from MyFitnessPal
A.It offers offline service.
B.It is a newly founded company.
C.Its consumers are completely young.
D.Its market share is shrinking fast.
4.What might be a suitable title for the text
A.Weight Loss Goes Digital
B.Lose Weight on Your Own

A good way to look at failure straight in the face is by writing a failure resume or CV.Like social media, there,we usually only see our friends’ “highlight parts”.When we look at others’ resumes,we get scared and think how ours doesn’t measure up.But even the most accomplished people have plenty of failure behind them — we just don’t see it.
Stefan felt this deeply as a scientist,so she wrote a different CV which of course boasted(夸耀)about her good grades,PhD,and published papers. But the way she deals with her failure CV is a model of what we could all do.
“My CV does not reflect my great academic efforts — it does not mention the exams I failed,my unsuccessful PhD or scholarship applications,or the papers never accepted for publication.During the interviews,I talk about the one project that worked, not about the many that failed,”writes Stefan in a column for .
Stefan suggests keeping a draft on which you log, casually but regularly, every unsuccessful application, refused grant proposal and rejected paper.
And that’s the point: not to consider what we got wrong, but to use that information to both look at failure and realise it’s really okay, and also to use our failures for another purpose: as learning tools.
The point is to be real — with ourselves and about how the world works.Being real means taking an honest, critical, but also kind look at what we didn’t get right, and then doing our best to change what we can.Instead of focusing on how that failure makes you feel, take the time to step back and analyse the practical, operational reasons that you failed.
So,practice being okay with failure, and turning your failures into lessons learned. And yes, sometimes we have to learn those lessons more than once, letting go of what you can’t change. And keep moving forward to success.
1.What does the underlined word “it” in the first paragraph refer to
A.Plenty of failure. B.A failure resume.
C.Highlight part. D.Social media.
2.What did Stefan intend to tell us in Paragraph 3
A.All her failures in her career.
B.Benefits she got from her failures.
C.The content of her own resume.
D.The difference between her resume and others’.
3.What does Stefan advise us to do in our careers
A.Regard failures as part of our life.
B.Keep a record of our failures.
C.Value our achievements.
D.Long for failures.
4.Which of the following best describes the author’s opinion
A.No pains,no gains.
B.All roads lead to Rome.
C.Where there is a will,there is a way.
D.Failure is the mother of success.
故选A项。
根据第四段中的“Stefan suggests keeping a draft on which you log, casually but regularly, every unsuccessful application, refused grant proposal and rejected paper.”

Alma Deutscher,a eighteen-year-old girl from England who created her first musical work at age six, first short opera at age seven, and first full-length opera based on Cinderella at age ten,is anything but average.Though her parents downplayed(淡化) her extraordinary talent, young Alma is being described as “little Mozart” by the music world.
Alma’s opera based on the classic fairy tale, which she began writing at age eight, has a slight twist. Her Cinderella is a musician who meets her Prince Charming,a poet through a song.“In my Cinderella, she sings the beginning of a ballad(情歌) - but at midnight she runs away.Eventually, the prince finds her after asking all the girls of the country to sing the end of the ballad.”
The opera was first performed in Vienna,Austria on December 29,2016,where the then eleven-year-old skillfully changed between the piano and the violin and received enthusiastic reviews. The young genius has since performed two new piano works, one in Australia and the other in China.
Alma’s musical talent first came to light before she could even talk. However,Alma’s abilities only gained international attention in 2012,after a family friend posted a video online comparing her to Mozart. The family was suddenly filled with media and Alma became an overnight star. The nickname “Little Mozart” makes her parents unhappy because they believe it puts added pressure on the young girl. They would instead prefer her to be called “a composer and musician”.
Alma does not want to be compared to the famous artist either, saying “There was only one Mozart, and I prefer to be little Alma.” Regardless of what she calls herself, the eighteen-year old is changing the world of music forever!
4.Which of the following statement about Alma is NOT true

根据第一段中的“Though her parents downplayed(淡化) her extraordinary talent, young Alma is being described as ‘little Mozart’ by the music world.”
根据第二段中的“In my Cinderella, she sings the beginning of a ballad(情歌) — but at midnight she runs away.Eventually, the prince finds her after asking all the girls of the country to sing the end of the ballad.”可知,画线词所在句子“Alma’s opera based on the classic fairy tale, which she began writing at age eight, has a slight twist.”

My brother,Michael and I are crazy about houses. On Aug 1,2016,I was driving through the Northern Neck of Virginia with him.We had found an abandoned Italianate farmhouse with weeds up to our waist. When admiring the property my brother rolled up the unlocked garage door.“Holy smokes!” There sat this Mercedes.Seeing the number 6.9 on its back,I immediately recognised this to be a rare and unique finding.
The car’s door was unlocked and in the glovebox,I found insurance papers. It turned out that the owner was a dead country doctor. It took me a year to find his widow’s(寡妇的) address,in Richmond.Twice I made the two-hour drive just to knock on her door, striking out both times. On the third try her neighbour was outside and I was able to get the widow’s phone number.
I logged approximately 25 voice mails, and still nothing. It was,I thought, just bad luck.I called one last time and heard a voice: “Hello?” From that point on,we struck up a friendship.
In July 2018,two years after finding the car,I was ready to buy it from her.We met in the middle — somewhere around what a new Toyota might cost.Still, the night before,I called my brother and said,“I_am_getting_cold_feet. What was I doing buying an old Mercedes?” He said,“You are buying that great car.And I promise you,the friendship you will make as a result will make this car worth every penny.” And he was right.
8.Why did the author go to the Northern Neck

11.What did Michael think of buying the car
A.It was a waste of money.

C.Buying the car brought good friendship.
D.His brother made a good bargain buying it.

根据第二段中的“It took me a year to find his widow’s(寡妇的) address,in Richmond.”及第三段中的“I logged approximately 25 voice mails,and still nothing.” 故选A项。
从画线句上文的“I was ready to buy it from her.We met in the middle — somewhere around what a new Toyota might cost.Still, the night before,I called my brother...”可知,作者虽然决定购买这辆车,并且谈妥了价格,但作者还是非常犹豫,以及句后的“What was I doing buying an old Mercedes?”

The benefits of regular exercise are well documented, but there’s a new bonus to add to the ever-growing list.New researchers found that middle-aged women who were physically fit could be nearly 90 percent less likely to develop dementia(失智症) in later life, and as they did,it came a decade later than less sporty women.
Lead researcher Dr Helena Horder,of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, said: “These findings are exciting because it’s possible that improving people’s cardiovascular(心血管的) fitness in middle age could delay or even prevent them from developing dementia.”
For the study,191 women with an average age of 50 took a bicycle exercise test until they were exhausted to measure their peak(最大值的) cardiovascular capacity. The average peak workload was measured at 103 watts.
A total of 40 women met the criteria for a high fitness level,or 120 watts or higher.A total of 92 women were in the medium fitness category;and 59 women were in the low fitness category, defined as a peak workload of 80 watts or less,or having their exercise tests stopped because of high blood pressure, chest pain or other cardiovascular problems.
These women were then tested for dementia six times over the following four decades.During that time,44 of the women developed dementia.Five percent of the highly fit women developed dementia, compared to 25 percent of the women with medium fitness and 32 percent of the women with low fitness.
“However, this study does not show cause and effect between cardiovascular fitness and dementia,it only shows an association.More research is needed to see if improved fitness could have a positive effect on the risk of dementia and also to look at when during a lifetime a high fitness level is most important.” She also admitted that a relatively small number of women were studied, all of whom were from Sweden,so the results might not be applicable to other groups.
12.What is on the ever-growing list mentioned in the first paragraph
A.Positive effects of doing exercises.
B.Exercises suitable for the middle-aged.
C.Experimental studies on diseases.
D.Advantages of sporty women over men.
13.Why did the researchers ask the women to do bicycle exercise
A.To predict their maximum heart rate.
B.To assess their cardiovascular capacity.
C.To change their habits of working out.
D.To detect their potential health problems.
14.What do we know about Dr Horder’s study
A.It aimed to find a cure for dementia.
B.Data collection was a lengthy process.
C.Some participants withdrew from it.
D.The results were far from satisfactory.
15.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.More Women Are Exercising to Prevent Dementia
B.Middle-Aged Women Need to Do More Exercise
C.Fit Women Are Less Likely to Develop Dementia
D.Biking Improves Women’s Cardiovascular Fitness
根据第一段中的“New researchers found that middle-aged women who were physically fit could be nearly 90 percent less likely to develop dementia(失智症) in later life...” 故选A项。
根据第三段第一句“For the study,191 women with an average age of 50 took a bicycle exercise test until they were exhausted to measure their peak(最大值的) cardiovascular capacity.”

They arrived at the airport hours in advance. To pass the time,Wang Peng’s parents went to the shops while the boy sat nearby quietly waiting, until he realised the girl next to him was crying.“Hi,Sister, are you okay?” the boy asked. At first, the girl did not answer.“Where are you about to fly?” he asked. Finally, the girl spoke up.“I’m supposed to fly back home to Hainan.I promised my mother that I would come home for her 60th birthday, but I lost my plane ticket,” the girl said.“I’d been saving up for this ticket for such a long time.I can’t afford another ticket now.” she said.
Wang Peng felt really sorry for the girl.Soon he saw his parents returning from the shops.Quickly,he stood up and, before his parents could come closer,he leaned toward the girl and said,“Check under your seat.Isn’t that a ticket?Maybe you can ask the ground staff to change it to your name.”
The girl,Li Mei,was at first confused. But when Wang Peng left, she checked under her seat and saw a ticket lying there. It wasn’t hers, but she was hopeless,so she childishly thought she could do as Wang Peng told her.
She handed the ticket to the woman at the counter(柜台) and as she waited, she saw Wang Peng’s father shouting at Wang Peng,“How could you be so careless and lose your ticket?”
At that moment,Li Mei realised whose ticket it was under her seat. But just as she did,the woman at the counter spoke to her.“Excuse me,girl.I believe this is that boy’s missing ticket.” She pointed to Wang Peng.

(2023·海南海口期末)Joseph was my best friend. He was the only son of Adam Tan,a well-known former athlete and a member of the first Malaysia team to reach the South Pole in an exploration.Hence, many assumed Joseph to be as sporting as his father. However, since he was young,he has been a sickly boy.He suffered from a severe breathing problem and preferred to read books indoors.
A year ago,his father was stuck by a wild bull on the last mile of his exploration in the Mautu wilderness in Africa and later died.On the anniversary(周年纪念日) of his father’s death,he was hurt by the unkind remarks from Bala and Azhar, his classmates. They had called him “a sickly boy”,remarking that he was a disgrace(丢脸的人) to his father. From that day on,Joseph devoted himself to building up his body and turned his attention and efforts enthusiastically to sports.“No one will compare me unfavourably to my father,” he thought.
Joseph joined our school exploration team and then became its leader. We were all excited when we learned that the school had planned an exploration in Kalimantan,Indonesia. It was also meant to be memory of Joseph’s father, who was its former adviser.
The exploration really tested our courage and skills.Though we had the help of our two teacher advisers,we were determined to succeed in the exploration which was to cross a mountain, river and forest. The last stage was the forest and we were within sight of our target. We had only one more kilometre to cover before we would emerge from the forest and successfully complete our exploration in the required time.If we succeeded,we would be the first school team to have done that in record time.

People cheered but stopped when they saw us carrying Joseph.__________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
People cheered but stopped when they saw us carrying Joseph.Carrying Joseph was a very heavy load but we did not mind the physical part of the burden. What worried us was not finishing the hiking in record time but that Joseph would die before he received medical help.We did not know how we made it and walked through the jungle into the finishing line. Our teachers who timed us told we had taken half an hour.Joseph was then sent to hospital. In my heart, his father should be proud of him.UNIT 2 Period Three

1.C 根据空后“but one”及下文“In the back of a closet,looking depressed and thin,one lonely kite preferred to __2__.”
2.B 根据下文“But he didn’t like flying.”
3.A 根据上文“His outline was so classic”可知,风筝的轮廓很经典,从外表看这是能够稳定飞行的标志(sign)。
4.C 根据下文“...it was the belief that the higher the flight, the further the fall that scared the kite most of all.”
5.D 根据上文“His outline was so classic, which you may think was a __3__ to steady his flight.”
6.B 根据上文“But he didn’t like flying.__4__, it was the belief that the higher the flight, the further the fall that scared the kite most of all.”
7.D 根据上文“‘Come on,’ said the boy excitedly”可知,男孩很兴奋。
8.C 根据空后“give the kite a lift”可知,只有跑(running)起来,风筝才会向上飞。
9.D 根据下文“strong and swift”及“carrying him up high into the air”可知,此处描述的是强劲而迅猛的风(wind)将风筝带到空中。
10.A 根据上文“__4__,it was the belief that the higher the flight, the further the fall that scared the kite most of all.”
11.A 根据下文“‘The kite must either be __12__ or broken,’ other kids were joking.”
12.C 根据上文“The boy ran all through the park while other kids __11__ at his kite rolling over and falling.”
13.B 根据上文“Facing fears bravely,we can scare them away.” 短语get up one’s nerve意为“鼓起勇气;变得勇敢”。
14.B 根据上文“With these words, the kite got up his __13__ and decided to give flying another try.”
15.D 根据下文“Don’t be afraid of fear.Instead, embrace it bravely and optimistically.”
