Teddy’s Bear

Have you heard of dodos The dodo was a large bird. But you might not think it was a bird at all, for the dodo could not fly. It was a member of the chicken family. It lived happily and safely until humans arrived in 1505. European sailors(水手) discovered the bird in 1507 on the Island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean.
When the sailors talked about the strange bird that could not fly, people found it hard to believe it. The Europeans on the Island of Mauritius and the pigs they brought with them found the birds very good to eat. So large numbers of dodos were killed and by 1681 no living dodos were found on the island. A few dodos were brought to England in the 17th century but for 200 years none have been seen alive. The humans didn’t know how to protect the birds. They caused the dodo’s extinction(灭绝). This is how the phrase “as dead as a dodo” came. Because they died out completely, dodos became very well-known. It gave humans a big lesson.

The red kangaroo is famous, special Australian animal. It moves by jumping on its long hind(后部的) legs. Its heavy long tail helps it keep its balance(平衡). If it is running, a large kangaroo can reach a speed of 40 kilometers an hour. One jump may be 8 meters long and up to 3 meters high.
The red kangaroo mainly live on the dry grasslands of Australia. It usually travels in small groups. Each group has about 12 kangaroos.
When a baby red kangaroo is born, it weighs only 28 grams! After being born, it crawls(爬行) through the mother’s fur to her pouch(育儿袋). In hard times, the mother kangaroo can stop the baby from being born until there is enough grass for her to eat.
The mother feeds the baby called a “Joey” with milk from her body. The Joey will spend at least a year in the pouch.
If a kangaroo is run after and cannot run away, it will turn and fight. It will lean(倾斜) back on its tail and kick with its hind legs. These legs are very, very strong and have large claws(爪). The front legs are used to hold things, not to box, as you often see in cartoons. Kangaroos can live for up to 20 years. A kangaroo never stops growing bigger, so an old kangaroo can be very large. Thousands of years ago, in the south of ancient China, there lived Shennong, a man who had an ox(牛) head and human body. Seeing that local people were suffering from disease, he built ladders and houses on a high mountain to store hundreds of medical plants. To remember him, people named the place Shennongjia.
The legend(传说) makes Shennongjia in Hubei an interesting place for tourists. Travelling there is a unique experience, as you can see sceneries of the four seasons from different altitudes. “When the bottom(底部) of the mountain is summer, the top is spring and while the foothill is autumn, the top is covered with snow,” local people say of the special climate of Shennongjia.
