A Great Woman Scientist
Marie Curie was born in Poland on November 7 in 1867. She is a very
famous woman scientist for her work on radioactivity(放射).
Marie Curie’s father was a high school physics teacher and encouraged
her interest in science. In 1891 she went to study in Paris and changed her
name from Maria to Marie, a French name. Two years later she passed the
examination for a degree in physics with the highest grades in her class. She
later married the French physicist Pierre Curie.
Marie Curie knew the element uranium(铀) gave off rays similar to
X-rays. She wanted to find new uses for these rays. Pierre Curie stopped his
own work and joined his wife. In 1898, they told the world that they
discovered two new elements:radium(镭) and polonium(钋), both
of which gave off even more rays than uranium. With her husband, Pierre
Curie, and Henri Becquerel, she was awarded the 1903 Nobel Prize in
Physics in isolating pure radium(提炼纯镭). In 1911 Marie Curie won a
Nobel Prize in Chemistry, too. She was the first woman to win a Nobel
Prize.
Later in life, Marie Curie died as a result of leukaemia(白血病)
caused by exposure to radiation. Her contribution to physics had been
great, not only in her own work, but also because of her influence on
nuclear physicists and chemists.

What will you think of when you see the wheat straw(麦秆)? Most
people would probably see it as the waste in a farmer’s field. However, Wu
Cui, an intangible cultural inheritor (非遗传承人), can turn the straw
into beautiful and eye-catching art works.
The earliest straw (草)-weaving (编织) products were
discovered at Hemudu Cultural Ruins (河姆渡遗址) in Zhejiang province.
The Book of Rites, one of the classical works, also records that there were
already things made of grass and professional straw - weaving craftsmen
during the Zhou Dynasty.
Choosing materials is the first step. It is a difficult process that can take
weeks, or even months to complete. You need to draw the piece on paper,
which requires drawing skills. Next comes weaving, shaping and finally
keeping the work. Even by finishing that process, it does not mean that you
will always create a good piece of work, and the hardest part is to make it
look like the real things or people.
In Wu’s opinion, straw weaving should meet people’s needs. In the
past, the materials could be found almost in every household in the
countryside, such as straw hats and straw shoes, because they were
practical in everyday life. But with the development of industry, products
by machines began to take their place. “To help the skill develop,
craftsmen should make a great effort to master the chances of the times to
create new products,” she says.
When asked about her plans, Wu says she wants to dig deeper into
local traditional culture and create cultural creative products by developing
the straw-weaving skill.
