I was looking through old photos with Mom. “Where on earth is that photo of Dad and Mumpsy ” I asked. It was my favorite one of Dad holding his dog.
“Maybe Jean has it,” said Mom. “We could ask her.” I looked at Mom as if she had the third eye. She could not be serious! Grandma had two sons, Dad and Uncle Ralph, who was married to Jean. Mom and Jean hadn’t got along since I was a little boy. Jean would say hurtful words to Mom, and Mom tried to let it go. After Grandma passed away, our connection with Uncle Ralph and Jean fell apart.
Yet here was Mom, intending to reach out to Jean after nearly 30 years. “We’re in our eighties,” Mom said. “Neither of us has many years left. Why not give it a try ”
Mom called Jean. Jean said the photos weren’t organized, and she invited Mom over to help look for the photo.
Sitting down at the table, Mom and Jean got through all the boxes from Grandma but didn’t find the photo. After a short talk, Jean said sorry for what she had done years before. She said that over the years, she had come to realize her mistakes but the fear of not being forgiven had stopped her saying sorry. Over the next few hours, they talked about what had happened in their lives.
“Jean received a college degree, and she’s become an artist. She has even sold a few of her paintings.” Mom later told me. “Then Jean pulled out a photo album (相册) of her family, just to share with me.”
“I suppose you didn’t find the Mumpsy photo,” I commented.
“Oh, I almost forgot. Guess what was stuck into the back cover of the album and fell out when she opened it ” Mom held up the photo of Dad and Mumpsy — lost until the recovery of Jean and Mom’s wounds.

Farm to school events are taking place nationwide this month. The events are aimed at bringing fresh food to students’ plates.
Students in Watkins Elementary grow vegetables in their school garden. They excitedly prepare for FRESHFARM classes held in the school’s kitchen. In one such class, children joyfully cut and cook freshly harvested vegetables, filling the air with their sweet smell. Regina Green, a coach of the class, stresses, “Teaching nutrition (营养) without a kitchen is like swimming lessons without a pool.” The students at Watkins Elementary are fortunate to have access to such a kitchen with various cooking tools.
At a time when diet-related diseases are a leading cause of death, it’s impossible for a cooking program to solve such a social problem. It needs many things to come together to support healthy eating. In promoting healthy eating, various factors must be considered. Among the challenges is the marketing of unhealthy products. Often there’s easy access to snacks and children’s taste preferences are shaped by the foods that are around them.
Despite these challenges, programs like FRESHFARM play an important role in encouraging children to explore new tastes. At first, many kids were turned off by the bitter taste of greens. But through different cooking ways, many kids become inspired.
The excitement of 5th graders is obvious as they happily taste the biscuits they’ve made, winning over many of their classmates. Catie Kelley, whose children have taken part in the program, shares, “Our family has new cooking experiences because of the program. The kids bring home recipes (食谱) that introduce us to dishes we don’t usually make. They show more interest at the store in identifying foods they’ve tried in the program.”
It is hoped that such school programs can arm children with the skills and inspiration needed to make healthy food choices, setting them on a path towards health in every way.
4.What does Regina stress
A.Skills are hard to learn. B.Kids should learn happily.
C.Practice is quite necessary. D.Kitchens should be advanced.
5.What can we learn from paragraph 3
A.Healthy eating is a tough task. B.Kids can make wise food choices.
C.Programs of this kind will go nowhere. D.Diet-related diseases draw no attention.
6.What does Catie think of the program
A.Costly. B.Helpful. C.Challenging. D.Popular.

Erin Alexander, who was suffering from the loss of her relative, was having a hard day. However, her day took an unexpected turn when she picked up her order and noticed a message on the cup: “Madam,” the waitress had written next to a heart, “your heart is golden.” The small and unexpected act moved her deeply, brightening the rest of her day.
New research confirms the great influence of experiences like Ms. Alexander’s. Researchers found people who perform an unplanned act of kindness tend to undervalue how much the receiver will appreciate it. This could hold many of us back from doing nice things for others more often.
In a recent experiment, 84 participants (参与者) were given a hot chocolate on two cold weekends at a park and were told they could keep it or give it to a stranger. The 75 participants who gave away their drink were asked to guess how “big” their kind act would feel to the receiver on a scale (等级) from 0 to 10, and how the receiver would rate their feelings upon receiving it. The receivers were then asked to report how they actually felt using the same scale.
It turned out that the people doing the kind thing always undervalued the importance of their actions. While they thought they were offering something small, the receivers considered it more meaningful because someone had done something nice for them.
Despite longing for kindness, many people feel awkward at the thought of being kind. The “little inner voice” often leads them to question whether their behavior might be misunderstood or whether it will make the receiver feel pressured to pay it back.
But an act of kindness is unlikely to have unintended results; it can lead to even more kindness. If you are not already in the habit of performing unplanned kind acts, start by thinking about what you are interested in and how you can turn that into an offering for others.
7.How did Erin Alexander feel after reading the message
A.Calm. B.Puzzled. C.Warmed. D.Anxious.
8.Paragraph 3 is mainly about the ______ of the experiment.
A.rule B.process C.purpose D.result
9.What may prevent people performing kindness according to the text
A.A mix of fears. B.Coldness from others.
C.High expectations of others. D.Voices from the public.
10.What does the author suggest readers do
A.Think twice before helping. B.Value kindness from others.
C.Find ways to change habits. D.Take action to offer kindness.

The landscape of parents staying at home is changing, challenging old ideas about who takes care of the children. While moms usually did this in the past, a recent study by Pew Research Center shows more dads are staying at home. Over the last 30 years, the number of dads staying at home has gone up from 11% in 1989 to 18% in 2021.
Economics is the most significant part of this change. As women do better in school — with 53.1% of adults with a bachelor’s degree being women and get better jobs, families are thinking about different ways to share responsibilities. Women are getting better paying jobs, like in medicine and law, making some families decide that having the dad at home and the mom as the main earner is the best choice. Chris Braaten from California knew his wife, with a higher degree, could earn more, so he happily stayed at home.
The wish for one parent to stay at home often matches what both partners want. Many dads, not happy with their jobs, find more joy in taking care of their children. Spending meaningful time with family and feeling satisfied often matter more than staying in the workforce.
The high cost of childcare is also making parents think differently. Childcare can be very expensive, ranging from $4,810 to over $15,000 per child each year. This leads some families to consider new ways, like having the dad stay home, to handle these costs.
Cannon Ingalls and Jeff Carlson show this too. Ingalls, moving from Missouri to Minneapolis, chose his wife’s better-paying job over his own. Carlson in Colorado found that most of his salary was going to childcare, so he decided to stay at home to avoid money stress.
As the idea of parents staying at home continues to change, economic factors, along with new thoughts about gender (性别) roles and a wish for more meaningful family time, are making more dads choose to stay at home.

As water levels rise, causing severe erosion, many coastal Puerto Ricans are left watching their homes fall into the sea. A small software company in Puerto Rico called Terra Firma, founded in 2019 by island native Alejandro Mieses, is using satellite data to forecast accurate erosion pain points that might help Puerto Rican city planners better protect their island.
Terra Firma is dealing with the challenge of scattered (分散的) environmental data by creating a single database. Their user-friendly software allows scientists, construction professionals, and government agencies to model and predict environmental risks accurately. Similar to a powerful Google Maps, the software collects data from 1941 to the present, enabling users to predict erosion, landslides, flooding, solar exposure, and wind-related risks for up to 30 years.
This technology, once only available to well-funded projects, is now helping communities and individuals to protect their land. Since Hurricane Maria in 2017, Puerto Rico has focused on rebuilding a stronger island. With Terra Firma’s predictive data on flooding and erosion, city planners can better prepare for severe weather events.
One organization collaborating with Terra Firma is Blue Tide, a non-governmental group devoted to oceanic research and promoting the Blue Economy. After Hurricane Maria damaged coral reefs important for coastline protection, Blue Tide asked Terra Firma to design 3D-printed tiles. These unique tiles, made of clay, will help prevent erosion during future storms. They are shaped like cylinders (圆柱体), creating a nesting space for young coral, and over the next ten years, the clay is expected to dissolve (溶解), forming a complete organic coral reef.
This innovative approach aims to help Puerto Rico deal with erosion caused by storms, and Terra Firma plans to come up with more solutions as weather events get worse. According to Mieses, Terra Firma gives hope to Puerto Rico, which often faces hurricanes, by providing insights to better prepare for future storms and protect important infrastructure.
Currently, Terra Firma operates only in Puerto Rico, but they hope to expand to the southern United States in the next few years. Their work shows how technology can help deal with the effects of climate change on vulnerable coastal communities.

Scientists have reported that the sea ice in Antarctica (南极)is at a record low level. Antarctica is a great, icy land, surrounded(围绕)by the huge Southern Ocean. The ice in Antarctica doesn't just cover the land. There's also a large area of sea ice on the ocean's surface.
Every year, the sea ice at the South Pole goes through a cycle. In the summer, the huge sea ice melts(融化)to its smallest point. Over the colder winter months, the sea ice grows and grows until it covers a wide area. Usually, the sea ice covers the greatest area around September 23, as winter ends at the South Pole.
Scientists have been measuring the area of the sea ice in Antarctica since 1979. For most of this time, Antarctica has seemed to be almost unaffected by the changing weather conditions experienced in other parts of the globe. That began to change around 2016. Now, for several years, the area of Antartica's sea ice has been shrinking.
This year, the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre(NSIDC)reported that Antartica's sea ice covered its greatest area on September 10—almost two weeks earlier than normal. And the sea ice was at a new record low-not just by a little bit, but by a lot.
The last time Antartica's low sea ice set a record at the end of winter was in 1986. And this year, there's about 398, 000 square miles less sea ice than in 1986.
Scientists are still trying to understand what is driving the change in Antarctica. One likely direct cause for the change is the rising temperatures of the world's oceans. Ted Scambos, a research scientist at the University of Colorado, says Antarctica's ice levels have always changed some, but the sharp loss this year is “pointing towards warmer ocean conditions around the continent. ”
The new low record has concerned the scientists. Scientists are working hard to better understand Antarctica. They don't know yet if this is just a short-term problem, or part of a long-term shift(转变)towards less sea ice in Antarctica.
28. What does the underlined word "shrinking" mean in Paragraph 3
A. Getting smaller. B. Being flat. C. Observed. D. Measured.

A new song by the famous band The Beatles has been released(发行)despite half of the band members no longer being alive, thanks to the help of AI.
The Beatles was a legendary British rock band that remained second to Elvis Presley from the 1960s. It was made up of four musicians—John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. The new song, titled Now and Then, is unique because it combined the singing of McCartney and Starr with Lennon, who passed away in 1980, and the guitar skills of Harrison, who passed away in 2001.
The song was initially(起初)written and partly recorded by Lennon in the late 1970s and further developed by band mates years later but as technology then was limited, they didn't release it due to the sound quality not being satisfying.
Peter Jackson, most famous for directing The Lord of the Rings, directed the music video for Norw and Then and it can be watched now online. It was thanks to new Al audio restoration (音频修复)technology that Peter Jackson allowed the four band members to “come together” one last time.
Since its release last week, the song has been well received in the UK. Beatles fans around the world favoured this historic musical event.
"Now and Then is an absolutely heart-warming piece of work, "posted Liam Gallagher, whose hits were affected by The Beatles' musical style.
Of course, there are those who are not totally interested in the song. "Now and Then is not terrible. . But honestly, it's kind of boring, "Geoff Edgers wrote in The Washington Post.
The Times in the UK said the song showed Al being used to its best advantage.
32. Why was the song "Now and Then" not released at first
A. The song was not completed.
B. The sound quality was not good enough.
C. The band members did not like the song.
D. The song was let out before its official release.

Amy Jandrisevits knows the value of a good doll. “Dolls have a power we don’t completely understand,” she says. It’s a conclusion she came to while working as a pediatric oncology (儿科肿瘤) social worker using dolls to help her young patients adapt to their changing medical situations. Many of the kids saw themselves in those good dolls, but for the kids who had lost their legs or hair, there were none they could relate to.
So, eight years ago, when a friend said that her child was disabled, Jandrisevits knew what might help the youth through the challenging period. “It’s hard to tell a kid, ‘You are perfect the way you are’, and it is important to build the kids’ self-confidence,” she says.
Jandrisevits went about changing that. She made a doll by hand, which looked like her friend’s child and sent it off. After the friend posted a photo of the happy child and doll on-line, another woman asked Jandrisevits to make a doll that looked like her baby, who had lost a leg.
Word spread, and soon Jandrisevits made dolls for children with different physical defects (缺陷) — in short, dolls that looked like them. She quit her job and started a nonprofit, A Doll Like Me. Working out of her home in Milwaukee, based on photos sent by kids’ parents or caregivers, Jandrisevits takes about seven hours to make each doll. A GoFundMe page helps her make up for costs and allows her to donate her services. She hasn’t charged for a doll since she began her nonprofit.
In all, she has made more than 400 dolls. The waiting list is long, but Jandrisevits is undefeated. As she explains on her GoFundMe page, “Every kid, regardless of age or body type, should look into the sweet face of a doll and see their own.”
4.What is the value of good dolls in the eyes of Jandrisevits

“Long time no see.” is a very interesting sentence. When I first read this sentence from an American friend’s e-mail, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.
Obviously, it is a word-by-word literal translation (直译) of the Chinese greeting with wrong English grammar! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was too surprised to believe her. Her words were unbelievable at all. So I did research on . To my surprise, there are over 60 thousand web pages containing “Long time no see.” Though it is sort of informal, it is part of the language that Americans use daily. Interestingly, if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be corrected.
Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chan’s movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood moviemakers successfully created a worldwide famous Chinese detective named “Charlie Chan” on wide screens. Detective Chan liked to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting Confucius. “Long time no see.” was his symbol. Soon after Charlie Chan, “Long time no see.” became a popular expression in America thanks to the popularity of these movies.
Some scholars compare America to a huge melting pot. All kinds of cultures are mixed in the pot together and they change the color and taste of each other. Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed pot.
You can have some examples from other countries, such as pizza from Italian, sushi from Japanese, and déjà vu from French etc. There is a long list! Since Americans admire Chinese culture more and more nowadays, I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the future. In this way, the American’s melting pot keeps adding richness.

Children should do housework. That’s a controversial (有争议的) idea, though not everyone will admit it. A few parents will say that their children are too busy for housework. Many more of us assign (分派) housework, or say we believe in them, but the housework just doesn’t get done.
That’s a problem. For starters, housework is good for kids. Being a part of the routine work of running a household helps children develop an awareness of the needs of others, while at the same time contributing to their emotional well-being.
One small study, done over a period of 25 years, found that the best predictor (预测) for young adults’ success in their mid-20s was whether they participated in household tasks at age 3 or 4. Those early shared responsibilities extended to a sense of responsibility in other areas of their lives.
But for all that their help matters, few kids are doing much around the house at all. In a survey of 1,000 American adults, 75 percent said they believed regular housework made kids “more responsible”. Yet while 82 percent reported having had regular housework growing up, only 56 percent of those with children said they required them to do housework.
Sports and homework are not get-out-of-housework-free cards. The goal, after all, is to raise adults who can balance a caring role in their families and communities with whatever lifetime achievement goals they choose. Housework teaches that balance.
What should you do when getting children to do housework Accept no excuses. Don’t worry if you must repeat yourself again and again. If you’re spending more time getting the child to do this job than it would take to do it yourself, then you’re doing it right. Can a payment help Maybe. But if you’re trying to teach kids to share the responsibility of a home, paying them for routine housework is not the right message.

A.Very few children get housework done. B.Children are very busy with housework.
C.Housework is a must-do for parents. D.Family members should respect each other.

Yachi has been pacing(领跑)for Youyou for several years. They crashed into each other repeatedly when they first tried running with the 30cm-long rope between them. When they run, a 30cm-long blue rope connects Youyou's left wrist(手腕)to Yachi's right. They move like each other's mirror image, using the rope as a form of communication. When Yachi's and Youyou's speeds are the same, the rope will naturally relax. The two don't actually need to talk too much about running. Now, they run like each other's clones.
Thanks to the rope, running is no longer a lonely task, explains Yachi. "This is a matter of achievements for both of us. Not only am I helping him improve, he is also pushing me to hold on and be strong, ”he says.

A powerful earthquake hit Morocco on Friday night. The earthquake struck around 11 pm on Friday night. The USGS(US Geological Survey)says that the earthquake had a magnitude of about 6. 8. But Morocco's earthquake center recorded the earthquake as being almost twice that strong.
The quake was one of the most powerful ever recorded in Morocco. It's also the country's deadliest earthquake in over 60 years. So far, the earthquake is reported to have killed over 2, 680 people. It has injured over 2, 500 others. The earthquake was extremely dangerous because it happened at night. Marrakesh is a big city that's popular with tourists. Many of its modern buildings seem to have survived the earthquake. But the old part of the city, called the Medina, was hit hard. The Medina has buildings that are over 1, 000 years old.
Outside of Marrakesh, the earthquake caused even more damage. In the Atlas Mountains, the earthquake's center, there are many small villages. Some villages were nearly destroyed. Many of the people in the area live in simple houses made of mud bricks. This is a traditional way of building in Morocco. But it's not strong enough to protect against earthquakes. Many of these houses collapsed. Some of the bricks turned to sand.
Rescue workers have been working hard to save those affected by the quake. In larger cities, rescue efforts seem to be going well
But it has taken a lot longer for help to reach far areas in the mountains. Many of these villages are difficult to get to. The earthquake caused landslides, blocking roads and making these places even more difficult to reach. In some areas, phone and electrical service were also knocked out, leaving these places completely cut off. That means that the local people in some areas far away have had to deal with the situation on their own.
But more help is coming. Some countries have offered teams of experts; others have offered emergency supplies.

From 2018 to 2021, about 10 billion snow crabs(蟹)disappeared from the eastern Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska. “It's a fishery disaster in the truest sense of the word, ”says. Cody Szuwalski, a fishery biologist.
Usually, as winter's thick sea ice melts(融化), the meltwater settles on the seafloor, creating a cold-water pool with temperatures below 2°Celsius on the eastern Bering Sea shelf, which makes perfect habitat for snow crabs. But a sea heat wave in the area in 2018 and 2019 prevented the usual amount of sea ice from forming.
After a close study, Szuwalski and his colleagues have found the water temperature probably didn't kill the crabs directly, as snow crabs in laboratories can survive in waters up to 12 ℃. Instead, the crabs might have died from hunger. According to the study, the food demand of snow crabs in labs almost double as water temperature rises from 0 ℃ to 3 ℃. The crab population reached historic highs in 2018 thanks to great ocean conditions for newborn crabs around 2010. As a result, the crowded crabs probably needed more food, but because of the smaller foraging (觅食)area, they had even fewer resources to sink their claws into.
“It's just something we didn't expect, but now we have to live with, ”says Christopher Harley, an ocean scientist. Such effects of ocean heat waves are likely to go beyond snow crabs. In answer to climate change, ecosystems in northern areas of the earth, such as Alaska's, are changing more rapidly than anywhere else. Scientists can try to help predict(预 测) and prepare for changes in the future with the aid of former research. “But the future increasingly holds events that have never happened on record before, like the drop in the snow crab population, ”Harley says.
32. Which of the following is suitable for snow crabs to live according to the text

A. To adapt to climate change.
B. To force people to reduce activities.
C. To avoid destruction from humans.
D. To remove environmental pollution.
35. What does Harley mean when it comes to the prediction for the future based on former research
A. It is useless. B. It is challenging. C. It is economical. D. It is rewarding.
