Between flights, as I sat in the Denver airport, a young man approached me. He tilted (倾斜) his head toward the chair next to mine, then toward my suitcase blocking the chair. There were many open seats. Why this one I thought. When he sat, I noticed the markings on his bag and his faded uniform. I asked. He nodded. I bowed my head slightly. Then he asked where I was headed.
“Home.”
Hands on his knees, he told me he was on vacation and was going home to surprise his mother. I asked how long it had been since he’d seen her (five years). I asked what he was looking forward to at home (a shower). He scanned the room cautiously as he talked. When he looked at me, his eyes kept no distance. He seemed to want something from me. I could not tell what it was.
He said it was hard to stop scanning for danger. Yesterday, he’d been in the desert. Fellow soldiers had been blown into pieces around him. Today, he was in an airport trying to understand anger over flight delays and the rush for coffee. He didn’t know how to be, here in this place.
I thought maybe I understood. One evening after spending hours with a friend who just lost her son, I went to my daughter’s performance. In the crowded lobby, mothers complained about their seats and bemoaned other small slights, but only compassion made sense to me. I felt disoriented and distant. I told the soldier about this. He breathed deeply and showed a small smile.
He’d seen the raw and unbearable. But he did not know how to tell us. This was what he needed from me, I realized. He did not want the seat beside mine. He wanted to sit with me.
I did not know his name, how his surprise would turn out, how long his tour of duty would last. We sat together until our flights were called and then said goodbye, two strangers heading home.

Wal-Mart is not just the world’s largest retailer. It’s the world’s largest company, which sells in three months what number-two retailer Home Depot sells in a year.
Wal-Mart exercises its power for just one purpose: to bring the lowest possible prices to its customers. At Wal-Mart, that goal is never reached. The retailer has a clear policy for suppliers: On basic products that don’t change, the price Wal-Mart will pay, and will charge shoppers, must drop year after year. But what almost no one outside the world of Wal-Mart and none of its 21,000 suppliers know is the high cost of those low prices. To survive in the face of its pricing demands, makers of everything from bikes to jeans have had to close US plants in favor of obtaining products from abroad.
Indeed, the real story of Wal-Mart, the story that never gets told, is the story of the pressure the biggest retailer constantly applies to its suppliers in the name of bringing us “every day low prices”.
The giant retailer’s low prices often come with a high cost. Wal-Mart’s pressure can crush the companies it does business with and force them to send jobs overseas. Are we shopping our way straight to the unemployment line Of course, US companies have been moving jobs offshore for decades, long before Wal-Mart was a retailing power. But there is no question that the chain is helping accelerate the loss of American jobs to low-wage countries such as Thailand.
People ask, “How can it be bad for things to come into the US cheaply ” Sure, it’s great to have bargains. But you can’t buy anything if you’re not employed.
There is no question that Wal-Mart’s drive to squeeze out cost has benefited consumers. By now, it is accepted wisdom that Wal-Mart makes the companies it does business with more efficient and focused. Wal-Mart itself is known for continuous improvement in its ability to handle, move, and track goods. It is legendary for forcing its suppliers to redesign everything from their packaging to their computer systems. It is also legendary for quite straight forwardly telling them what it will pay for their goods.

A.in abroad. B.in the ocean.
C.on the beach. D.on an island not far from shore.
29.Wal-Mart’s low price policy results in
A.more high-paying jobs. B.better designed packages.
C.bigger profit of its partners. D.more jobless American workers.
30.What can we infer from the passage
A.Still more quality goods will be provided.
B.The food you get at Wal-Mart costs least.
C.The value of Wal-Mart is over assessed.
D.Wal-Mart is a very demanding company.
31.What’s the best title for the passage
A.The Fortune Wal-Mart Makes B.The Wal-Mart you don’t know
C.The Biggest Retailer—Wal-Mart D.The Money-saving Tip in Wal-Mart
D
If you know exactly what you want, the best way to get a job is to get specialized training. A recent report shows that companies like graduates in such fields as business and health care who can go to work immediately with very little on-the-job training.
That’s especially true of booming fields that are challenging for workers. At Cornell’s School of Hotel Administration, for example, bachelor’s degree graduates get an average of four or five jobs offers with salaries ranging from the high teens to the low 20s and plenty of chances for rapid advancement. Large companies especially like a background of formal education coupled with work experience. But in the long run, too much specialization doesn’t pay off. Business, which has been flooded with MBAs, no longer considers the degree an automatic stamp of approval. The MBA may open doors and command a higher salary initially, but the influence of a degree washes out after five years.
As further evidence of companies gradually losing faith in specialized degrees, Michigan State’s Scheetz mentions a pattern in hiring practices. Although companies tend to take on specialists as new hires, they often seek out generalists for middle and upper-level management. This sounds like a formal statement that you approve of the liberal-arts (文科) graduates. Time after time labor-market analysts mention a need for talents that liberal-arts majors are assumed to have: writing and communication skills, organizational skills, open-mindedness and adaptability, and the ability to analyze and solve problems. David Birch, manager of the Boston Red Sox, says that he does not hire anybody with an MBA or an engineering degree. “I hire only liberal-arts people because they have a less-than-canned way of doing things,” says Birch.
For a liberal-arts degree, students focus on some basic courses that include literature, history, mathematics, economics, science, human behavior, and a computer course or two. With these useful and important courses, you can feel free to specialize. “A liberal-arts degree coupled with an MBA or some other technical training is a very good combination in the market place,” says Scheetz.
32.The job market is in great need of people with
A.special training in special fields. B.a bachelor’s degree in education.
C.formal schooling and work experience. D.an MBA degree from top universities.
33.The underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 means
A.an MBA degree does not help in future promotion.
B.MBA programs will not be as popular as they are now.
C.people will not forget the degree the MBA graduates have got.
D.most MBA programs fail to provide students with a foundation.
34.David Birch says that he only hires liberal-arts people because
A.they will follow others’ ways of solving problems.
B.they can do better in handling changing situations.
C.they are well trained in a variety of specialized fields.
D.they have attended special programs in management.
35.The author supports the idea that
A.on-the-job training is less costly in the long run.
B.formal schooling is less important than job training.
C.specialists are more expensive to hire than generalists.
D.generalists will do better than specialists in management.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项
The word “art” usually brings to mind images of white-walled galleries, abstract paintings costing millions of dollars, far removed from our everyday experience. 36
The Internet has changed the idea that art appreciation is only for the noble. 37 You can even visit several museums around the world using virtual reality headsets, without leaving your home.
38 Art has always been a vehicle for self-expression, but social media have made it much easier to share amateur work with the whole world. Where an amateur artist or musician might have shared their work with a circle of friends and family, they can now sell their work to anyone in the world.
“A picture is worth a thousand words” is the motto of data visualization enthusiasts. The amount of information available today can be overwhelming, so some statisticians (数据分析师) made it their mission to present this mass of data using infographics that are easy for the public to understand. 39 Of course, graphs can be abused to mislead the audience, so we need to take care to interpret them the right way.
Another way that art facilitates education is by helping us to conceptualize things that are invisible to the naked eye. 40 Likewise, the mind-bending concepts in physics such as black holes can be better understood with the help of illustrators who have backgrounds in both art and science.
A.Many platforms of social media help teaching the public art.
B.Yet art is indeed closer than many would believe it to be nowadays.
C.As most of our environment is man-made, everything in it contains art.
D.Netizens are not only consumers of art but creators and participants, too.
E.Biology students would find videos such as “The inner Life of the Cell” helpful.
F.They present information in visually appealing ways instead of using dry numbers.
G.It has enabled more people than ever to have access to visual art and music of all types.

第三节 读后续写(25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The excited sound of seventh-grade laughter and voices spilled down the hallway as the students filed into the gym. I weaved my way through the mass of people and sat down next to my best friend, Lauren.
“So, what exactly are we doing here ” she questioned.
“Well, according to Mrs. Marks, we’re supposed to be listening to a speech about bullying and peer pressure.”
As soon as the speaker started talking, I snapped to attention. She had this way about her, as if she knew how to reach into our minds and souls and make us think. I though about the kids who came to school every day, despite knowing that they would have to face cruel comment all day long.
One boy, in particular, came to mind. Every day, this boy came to school late, and I suspected it was because he needed to get medicine from the nurse. But this didn’t stop kids in the class from making fun of him. The boy would put his head down on his desk in shame. The worst, though, was when he tried to fight back. His attackers only laughed and continued the cruelty until the entire room was laughing at his expense.
As I sat in the auditorium, absorbing everything the speaker had to say, thoughts of this poor boy crept into my head.
“Now, before I leave today, I would like to give everyone here an opportunity to say anything he or she wants to on the subject of bullying or peer pressure. You may apologize to a friend, thank someone for his or her kindness, anything, And this is the one time I can promise that no one, will laugh at you.”
The stillness in the room made me believe her. Slowly, I saw a few hands raise tentatively (犹豫地) in the air behind me, One girl wanted to apologize to a friend she had been ignoring recently. Another thanked a boy for his kindness when she slipped on the steps the other day.
