I participated in an exchange program where a Spanish student, Jenny, firstly came to live in my home for a few weeks and then I went to live in hers in Spain. I was somewhat nervous but mostly excited about the coming experience.
After the initial excitement, cultural differences began to affect me, causing me to feel anxious and homesick. What made culture shock difficult to deal with was the language barrier. My Spanish skills were not at the level of being able to express how I feel clearly.
The most difficult challenge was the food and meal time. I usually had dinner at 6:00 pm in China, but in Spain we had it at 10:00 pm when I was very hungry! I was a picky eater, and while I ate meat, I still wasn’t very adventurous. But there was a lot of meat in Spanish dishes. There were little kinds of vegetables in their dishes and potatoes were their favourite.
One night, I asked what we were going to eat. Since I didn’t know the Spanish word “conejo” they used, the entire family started acting like rabbits at the dinner table in an effort to help me understand its meaning. I was shocked. But in order not to bother them, I didn’t mention anything about my inadaptation.
When going back to my room after dinner, I just wanted to curl up alone and missed the delicious dumplings my mother made in my hometown. As there was no Chinese restaurant nearby, what I could do was to draw dumplings on papers as if I had eaten them and threw them into the dustbin.

Last Sunday morning, my parents and I were going on a vacation in Sydney, where my grandparents lived, to celebrate my birthday. Actually, celebrating my birthday in my grandparents’home had been a family tradition. As a result, their neighbors, warm-hearted and friendly, were familiar with me. Sometimes, they even came to the house and brought me birthday gifts in person.
We took the subway there as usual. When we got off the subway, I found I had lost my bag. The bag was memorable to me because it was given by my parents when I became a senior high school student. It also had some valuable items inside, including an expensive watch, a birthday gift from my grandparents.
I couldn’t help but cry because the bag meant so much to me. “What’s the matter, Lily ” my mom asked. I told her that I might leave the bag on the subway. Hearing that, she comforted me and said, “We have plenty of time. Let’s talk to the staff.”
Instantly, my parents reported the situation to the staff at the subway station. A kind worker smiled to me and said, “If someone found it, they would hand it in.” He asked us to wait patiently for a while, and then he called for help. After half an hour, the worker didn’t give us any information. I started to become anxious and lose hope. My father said, “No news is good news.” However, the worker finally apologized to us and let us await the information on the recovery of the missing bag at home. We had to go to my grandparents’house first.
In the afternoon, while I, together with my grandparents and my father, was preparing for a birthday party, I heard my mother talking to someone on the phone about my lost bag. My heart was beating violently, and I was expecting something extraordinary to happen. Sure enough, my mother got me to answer the phone, “Good news, Lily. The call is just for you, from the kind worker. He said a girl called Beatrice had sent the bag back.” I felt amazed that the girl’s name is the same as my friend’s in Sydney.

Alex was a friendly boy, but he had a bad temper and often found it challenging to control his anger. Whenever something didn't go his way or if he felt upset, a fiery anger would build up inside him like an angry monster.
One sunny afternoon, Alex went to the playground with his friends, Sarah and Ben. They were excited to play on the swings, slide, and monkey bars. As they started playing, Alex's turn on the swing was interrupted by another child who cut in line. Alex felt his anger rising inside him, and without thinking, he shouted at the child very angrily, demanding his turn back. Sarah and Ben looked at Alex with surprise, scare and depression. They didn't like it that their friend lost his temper like a monster and yelled. They stopped playing together.
Alex's anger not only ruined his own mood but also spoiled( 破 坏 ) the fun for his friends and the other children at the playground. Feeling ashamed and realizing the consequences of his actions, Alex slumped (跌坐) down on a nearby bench. He saw his friends playing happily without him, and he felt upset at losing control.
Alex's memories flooded back when his friends and family were often taken aback by his outbursts. When his best friend, Emily, wanted to play a game he didn't like, he would shout and throw a tantrum(发脾气), refusing to play with her. His little sister accidentally knocked over his tower of blocks, he would explode in a fit of rage, yelling and stomping his feet.
He had lost a lot of fiends and hurt his family because of his anger. Now he might lose these friends too. He realized that his mean words constantly hurt the people he cared about. He didn't want to be like a monster anymore, so he decided to find a better way to handle his anger.

An Honest Mistake
Alice double-checked the words on her spelling test. If she got 100 percent today, she'd win her class's First-Quarter Spelling Challenge and a brand-new dictionary that came with videos and other cool stuff. Plus, Lisa had promised to do a handstand if anyone got a perfect score.
Three more words to go. n-i-c-c-l-y. q-u-i-c-k-l-y. h-o-n-e-s-t-y. Wait! She’d spelled “honesty”, not “honestly”! She hurriedly erased the t-y and wrote l-y before handing in her paper.
“I’ll correct and grade these test papers at the break”, said Lisa. Alice hurried into the classroom. She sat restlessly in her seat with her fingers crossed. Then Lisa walked to the front of the room and cleared her throat.
“Congratulations, Alice! You did it!” she announced. The whole class burst into applause! Lisa presented Alice with her prize. Alice grinned(咧嘴笑) as she read the label on the box: To Alice Carter, for her perfect first-quarter score in spelling.
“Is everything OK ” Mom asked as Alice burst through the front door after school. “Everything is
perfect!” Alice shouted, showing Mom her spelling test paper and prize. Mom hugged her. “Put the test on the fridge so Dad can see it when he gets home. And Casper, too.”Alice scooped(抱起) up her cat. “Casper, can you spell nicely, quickly and honestly ” Alice's heart missed a beat suddenly. “Honestly ” H-O-N-E-S-L-Y!
“Alice, what's the matter ” said Mom. “I don't feel so good,” Alice said, putting Casper down and stuffing the test paper into her backpack. “Probably too much excitement.” Mom rubbed her back. “How about some tea ” Alice swallowed, “How did you know A “t” is exactly what I needed.

I had always prided myself on my sharp tongue and brilliant response whether in class debates or casual arguments. Thus, when I was selected to represent the school in the national debate series, I was naturally extremely confident of myself.
All the members in my team were good speakers. We had an experienced teacher who trained us well. But I was undoubtedly the most outstanding speaker. In each of the rounds that I debated in all the judges selected me as the best one. This meant that my confidence was the highest by the time we found ourselves with one week to train before the finals. I had every reason to believe that I would be voted the best speaker for the debate series.
I began to be self-important about the whole business and started behaving that way with my team-mates. I would laugh at Eton’s poor debating style. I would complain of Vivian’s slow response. I saw myself as the natural debater who would be disappointed by their bad performance.
As the finals drew near, I became more and more dissatisfied with my team. I began missing practices. My teacher was worried. My teammates were panicked. However, they had no choice but to rely on me to win the finals. Even if they would love to remove me from the team, they could not because there was no replacement good enough.
The day of the finals finally came. I was very excited that I was able to finally show off my debating skills. Everyone was expecting my performance. They knew that I was praised to be the one most likely to win the best speaker for the debate series.

47.Possible version:
Paragraph 1:
When back from school the next day, I was amazed by what I had seen. There were several dishes of dumpings on the table which were similar to the dumplings I drew yesterday. Jenny’s family were looking at me with big smiles. Seeing my confused look, Jenny explained in both Spanish and gestures that she happened to see my papers in the dustbin and told her family about my homesickness. After discussion, they decided to make dumplings for me to relieve it. “This is our first time to make dumplings. We hope you will like them.”
Paragraph 2:
Hearing what Jenny said, tears welled up my eyes. I hugged Jenny and expressed my heartfelt gratitude. Then I picked one of the dumplings up and had a taste in their expecting eyes. Even though the stuffing was only potato, I felt it very delicious and held up my thumb. All of us enjoyed a wonderful dinner together. From that day on, I also made up my mind to leave my comfort zone and try new things. I often thought of that special dinner after many years. It was their kindness that made me feel the warmth of family and I will treasure it with all my heart.

I took the phone, and then the voice of the worker who had helped us at the subwaystation came from it. He explained to me that, the kind girl, Beatrice, had picked up my bag on the subway and that she was sorry for not notifying the Lost and Found office in time. I felt infinitely grateful to him and the girl. When I hung up the phone, I circled with excitement. When my father soon fetched the bag, the birthday dinner was ready, and our family was seated at the desk, where we ate, talking and laughing. After dinner, we began to dance to the music. The house was full of harmony and warmth.
We were dancing happily when someone knocked at the door. Grandma stopped dancing and went to open the door. She said “It must be a neighbor who wants to give you a gift, Lily.” In a moment, a beautiful girl entered the house with a bunch of flowers. “Happy birthday, Lily.” said she, my best friend, Beatrice. I warmly welcomed her. When she saw the bag on the sofa, she screamed, “The bag looks like the one I picked up this morning.” We confirmed it and thought it was a coincidence.
