Instead of being addicted to smartphones and games, Zhang Yixuan prefers to spend his summer vacation walking in nature, meeting with little creatures like shrimps and crabs(蟹).
The 17-year-old boy went viral on Sina Welbo recently for his knowledge of biology, which led him to discover a new species of freshwater crabs of Sinolapotamon in 2022.
Zhang’s father, who was born in a rural area, loved catching fish and crabs himself at an early age, so Zhang was always taken outdoors by his parents to explore as much as possible and observe little creatures quietly without being interrupted. Now a grade 12 student at Yulin High School, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, Zhang has dozens of “living treasures” that he has collected from the outdoors, including insects, fish, shrimps and crabs.
“This one is a species of Nanhaipotamon that I caught in a mountainous area,” said Zhang, pointing to a bright-colored crab moving its amusing eyes around.“You can see it just shed its shell.” There is also a row of empty bottles and jars in Zhang’s room to store his specimens.“I can notice the small differences between two shrimps, and then I take them back to my room for further observation,” said Zhang.
It is the microscope his father bought him that makes the bedroom look more like a mini biology lab than anything else. It’s a place where Zhang can devote himself to identifying shrimps or observing crabs day and night. With the help of his microscope, Zhang concentrates on exploring the natural world.Sometimes he spends hours simply examining a piece of fish scale, the leg of a crab or the antenna of an insect. He often works so late that his parents have to force him to go to bed.
“I’m often amazed by what I see while placing these tiny and fragile things under the microscope. No matter how unimportant an insect is, each life is so delicately and uniquely organized,” said Zhang.

Android phones will be used to sense earthquakes around the world and may one day be able to provide global warnings, with the first mass alert system coming into use on August 11 in California, Google announced.
Google, which helped develop Android, worked with California and the US Geological Survey to build the quake alert s into all phones that run the common mobile operating system.Android users who have enabled location services and are near a quake of magnitude 4.5 or greater will receive a full-screen earthquake warning telling them to drop to the floor and seek cover. The screen also will provide estimates of the quake’s magnitude and distance from the user.Depending on their distance from a quake, people could get several seconds or perhaps a minute of warning.
Users won’t need to a download California’s MyShake app in order to receive the alerts. That application, developed by the University of California, Berkeley and launched last year, has been downloaded by only about 1 million of California’s 40 million residents.By contrast, many millions of people own Android phones.
“This announcement means that California’s world-class earthquake early warning system will be a standard function on every Android phone-giving millions precious seconds to drop, cover and hold on when the big one hits.” Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement.IPhone users won’t receive the alerts through Apple’s operating system, but they can download the MyShake app.
Also, Google announced that Android phones would begin detecting earthquakes from around the world through their motion-sensing accelerometers.“Your Android phone can be a mini-seismometer(地震仪), joining millions of other Android phones out there to form the world’s largest earthquake detection network,” according to a Google blog post.More than 2 billion devices run the Android operating system.
Hundreds of millions of people live in earthquake-pro ne areas. But many countries lack the resources to build detection and alert systems, Google said. The information will be used at first to provide fast and accurate information on Google Search. But Google said it could begin sending out earthquake alert s next year.

New research from the University of Portsmouth has shown a marked increase in shipping in the North East Atlantic.Scientists now warn that more monitoring(监控)is required to help protect sea life.
Researchers at the University of Portsmouth have discovered that rates of shipping in the North East Atlantic area rose by 34 per cent in a five-year period. The research is the first detailed survey of shipping activity in the North East Atlantic.Researchers used data(数据)from over 530 million vessel positions(船位)recorded by Automatic Identification System(AIS).They looked at the change in shipping between 2013 and 2017 across ten different vessel types. In total the study area covered 1.1 million km , including waters off Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and the UK.
Lead author, James Robbins said: “This change is likely to put more pressure on the marine(海洋的)environment, and may influence the protection of at-risk species.Renewed monitoring effort is needed to make sure that protective measures are enough to save species under threat in a changing environment.”
Some of the greatest shipping increases were found in areas close to the Spanish coast. The Espacio Marino de la Costa da Morte saw a rise of 413 per cent in vessel activity. It is an area used to protect seabirds.
Dr. Sarah Marley, Visiting Researcher at the University of Portsmouth, said: “Shipping is the most widespread human activity in our oceans, carrying a set of threats — from unnoticeable effects like underwater noise pollution to serious results when ships hit whales.”
Professor Alex Ford, from the University’s Institute of Marine Sciences, said: “Given the well-documented effects that shipping can have on the marine environment, it is necessary that this situation continues to be monitored — particularly in areas used to protect vulnerable(脆弱的)species which may already be under pressure.”

Change is with us from the day we are born and change is all around us every day. 26 This difference comes from the fact that we don’t all experience changes in the same way.So, what can we young people do in face of some changes
We young people aren’t always ready to deal with changes. That’s because our young brains are still growing. The back part of our brain is all about survival and keeping us alive. The middle of our brain controls our emotions. 27
Our brain can react to situations in different ways, depending on how we deal with changes or stress. When the brain thinks the body may be in danger, we’ll have the fight or flight response(反应). 28 The heart then sends blood quickly to the different body parts. It prepares the body to fight, flee or freeze.
There are times when we young people feel stressed, when changes get hard to manage, or when it is just too hard for us to collect our thoughts. 29 That may be a parent or carer, grandparent, aunt or uncle, teacher, neighbor or even an older brother or sister.Change can sometimes be hard or make you worry, but you don’t have to do it alone.
30 By meeting changes and trying new things, we’ll begin to discover what we really love.As we learn more about ourselves, we’ll make better decisions about our life and future. This can help us discover our path in life.
A.Changes are chances for us to grow up.
B.That response makes the heart beat faster.
C.And the front of our brain is still developing.
D.But some can face changes easily, while others can’t.
E.Other people can be affected by the slightest changes.
