Finally, the bell rang. “Don’t forget to practice your class presentation at home!” Miss Bella cried as everyone started talking and packing their school bags. Jessy felt sick. She hated having to read aloud in class. She was sure everyone got really bored listening to her. Once, when Jessy was reading out her holiday diary, Lee was even looking at his watch, a silver and blue one which seemed just magical.
Jessy watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever, and he had a certain so rt of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything. Jessy sighed. As she turned the corner, she saw Lee’s watch lying right in the middle of the path.
Jessy knew she should just pick it up and return it to him, but she didn’t want to run after him. Jessy bent down quickly, picked up the watch and ran home. On arriving home, Jessy put it on almost without thinking. She was surprised it fitted so well. She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech. Words just flooded out of her. “I’m going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I’ve won lots of competitions. But when I’m in a race, I’m not really thinking about winning. I’m just loving the feeling of being in the water...”Jessy laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain so rt of confidence. Turning back to the mirror, Jessy saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee’s watch really did have something magic about it.
The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Bella asked who was going to be brave and go first. Nobody moved. Jessy slowly raised her arm. Before Miss Bella could say anything, there was a shout from behind. “She’s stolen my watch!” Lee said angrily, “It went missing at school yesterday.”

Miss Baugh taught seventh-grade social studies. She was the kind of teacher that just about everyone has had at least once: Scary. Her reputation was not unlike that of Dracula. Miss Baugh allowed no nonsense (胡言乱语). She drilled us and taught us to take school seriously. She also introduced to us the concept of “extra credit” for a correct response to a random question — and a frown for an incorrect one. Miss Baugh had been teaching for a long time and knew how to frighten even the naughty boys in the back row, including me. She managed to scare us all.
But I also had a life outside of school and had just discovered cheap prank (恶作剧) pieces — an ink bottle painted to look as though it had overturned, and a piece of shiny black metal shaped like a puddle of ink.
Of all the people I could have pranked, I chose Miss Baugh somehow. At the beginning of the class, before she’d returned to her classroom, I dared to approach her desk. I opened her grade book and placed the bottle and the black metal on one of the pages, proudly noting that it truly did look like spilled ink! Then I went to my desk and waited for the fun.
I wasn’t disappointed. When Miss Baugh saw the items, she let out a little cry and looked for something to wipe up the ink with. The prank had succeeded the way beyond my expectations. But immediately she discovered that it was just a piece of black metal. She picked up the “puddle”, then the bottle, and examined them. She looked up with eyes sweeping the classroom with a deadly stare. Some of my classmates who had seen me set up the fake spill carefully avoided looking at me, so as not to give me away. Then came the unavoidable question: “Who did this ”

This is a story about a learning experience that had a big effect on the way that I live my life. The teacher in the story did not scream, assign homework, give me tests or even grade me on my work. I was taught by one of the most effective methods of teaching, one that only people with lots of love can understand.
“My wallet! Where is it ” were my first words when I found my wallet was missing. I searched my memory for a few good seconds, then realized that I had left my precious wallet at the library. Not only did I leave it at the library, but I had left it in the library’s public restroom! I clearly remembered seeing it on the shelf as I went to the bathroom.
Because the library was now closed, I had to wait until the next morning to begin my search. When I got there the next day, all I found was a tidy restroom, its counters clean and its floors shiny white. This was the first time I could remember ever hating to see a clean bathroom. As I walked out, I looked at myself in the mirror and shook my head at the forgetful fool in front of me.
Now all I could hope for was that the person who cleaned the restroom had found my wallet. So I politely approached an old lady reading her book at the front desk. I asked her if a wallet had been found in the bathroom yesterday. She didn’t answer me until she found a good place to pull herself away from her book. Then she peered (凝视) at me from behind the thick glasses on her nose. Letting out a quiet sigh (叹息), she struggled out of her comfortable sitting position. She walked through a door and disappeared for a moment. Then she came back to the desk, and said, “No.”
That was that. I quickly thanked her and walked off. I wondered what I would do if I had found a wallet containing sixty dollars, a phone card and many other important personal items. Finally, I painfully accepted the fact that my wallet was gone.

An extra day off unsuited Kayla just fine. She loved breaks. She wanted to go out to play with her friends. When the school bus dropped Kayla off, she ran into the house happily.

One day two years ago, my mother came home from work and announced that she had found a pet for the family. My father, little sister, and I eyed her in doubt.
My sister asked what kind of dog it was. My mother said it was a poodle (贵宾犬) named Pepe. I couldn’t believe she wanted a poodle — especially one with such an ordinary name. But she had made up her mind. “Actually, I’m doing a co-worker a favor,” she said. “The woman who owns Pepe says he hates to be alone and needs children to play with him.”
Pepe arrived the next night. His short tail shook happily. I didn’t get very close to him, thinking he should have stayed with his previous owner. My little sister played with him until bedtime, and he would come to me and begged for more attention. I always ignored him. But no matter how I treated him, he’d always like to be with me. He has always been waiting for me at the front door at the end of the day, smiling happily. He seems to know that I will be coming home from school at that time. Every day, he asks me with his eyes to play with him or take him somewhere. At night, he will wait until I fall asleep, leave his bed by the wall heater, walk down the hall and jump onto the end of my bed.
One night, while everyone was sleeping, I was in a half dream state. My throat hurt, my eyes pained, and some animal was crying in my ear. I opened my eyes and saw fog in my room. I wondered who left the window open. Pepe cried and bit my pajama sleeve (睡衣袖). Then I woke up and realized that it wasn’t fog in my room — it was smoke.

【答案】Everybody was fixing their eyes on Jessy, waiting for an explanation. A flush of embarrassment came to her cheeks, making Jessy biting her lips. Dead silence suddenly fell. Then came Miss Bella’s voice, “Why is Lee’s watch on your wrist ” Jessy hesitated for a while and decided to tell the truth. However, on second thoughts of the well-prepared speech and the magic of the watch, she changed her mind. “Miss Bella, could I give the speech first and then explain ” She made a request in a tone of begging.
Miss Bella smiled and asked the class to listen to Jessy’s speech first. Jessy put away her fright, took a deep breath, and made for the platform. Casting a glance at the sea of faces watching her, Jessy cleared her throat and began her speech. “I’m going to talk about swimming...” Word began to flood out of her. “What a terrific speech.” Whispers went around the classroom, and even Miss Bella nodded with approval. Immediately Jessy finished her speech, a storm of applause erupted from the class. Relieved, Jessy told everyone the truth, and especially the magic of the watch. 【答案】 After a few violent beats in my heart, I slowly raised my hand. Miss Baugh fixed me with a stare that struck terror in my heart. The whole classroom fell into a dead silence. I thought a storm of criticism was coming, but unexpectedly, she just laughed. “Well, it certainly fooled me!” she said, with a satisfied expression spreading across her face. She returned the prank pieces to me, and for a few seconds a sweet little old lady appeared right where Miss Baugh stood.
Miss Baugh was as strict as before, but something changed in me. She continued to lead us in our social studies with her serious attitude. I didn’t prank others any longer and was more focused on my study. And she became a good teacher worthy of respect in my heart just because I glimpsed that Miss Baugh had a warm human being beneath her stern face. That may have been the most enduring “extra credit” I received in seventh-grade social studies.

【答案】Paragraph 1
A week later, after I had canceled my bank card and reported my license missing, I received a mysterious package in the mail. The envelope was plain and unmarked, with no indication of who it was from. Curious, I opened it to find my missing wallet inside, along with a note. The note simply said, “Find in the library restroom. Please check your items.” I was stunned. How could someone find my wallet, return it to me, and not even want recognition for his/her kindness
Paragraph 2
Unexpectedly, this person didn’t even leave a return address, so I couldn’t thank whoever it was. I felt a mixture of relief and gratitude. After all, the wallet contained not only my money and cards, but also personal items that were irreplaceable. Whoever this anonymous hero was, they had restored my faith in humanity. I decided to pay it forward by doing some good deeds of my own, hoping to spread the same kindness I had been shown. And so, with a renewed sense of purpose, I walked out into the world, ready to make a positive difference. It taught me that everyone can give an act of kindness.

【答案】Standing up, I couldn’t breathe. I got down on the floor and moved beneath the smoke. Pepe followed every move of mine, his curly-haired belly dragging on the ground. If I hadn’t been so scared, I would have laughed. We finally arrived in the kitchen, where the smoke was very thick. I coughed heavily, but went forward. Pepe went with me. I covered my face with my pajama top and stood up, only to find that my mother had left a pot, with some oil still in it, on a burner that was still on.
I turned off the burner with Pepe around me. I moved on the floor to open the back door. Smoke went into the backyard quickly. Pepe ran out, but returned to follow me as I moved back to wake my family. They had their doors shut, and hadn’t smelled the smoke. My parents and sister woke up finally and we aired out the house, and then gathered in the kitchen to thank Pepe. He saved our lives and earned my respect forever. To this day, I’ve never seen a finer example of unconditional love than a poodle named Pepe.
