I was the youngest photographer working for National Geography when I arrived in 1978, and I spent at least a decade just trying not to make mistakes. While I was grateful for the opportunity, it was very difficult for me. With each new task came the fear that this was going to be the one where they figured out that I couldn't do the job. On many tasks, the most challenging part turned out to be the transportation.Over the years,I traveled by horse, car, train, truck and all sorts of old vehicles. I traveled by mule in Mexico,by ship along the Indian Ocean,by fihing boat in the Sea of Galilee.Wherever I traveled in the world, I wanted my pictures to make a real difference in people's lives.

Ten years ago, nine out of ten American families used cable(有线电视)or satellites. However,a little over half do so today. The fall of pay-TV,in the advance of online streaming(流媒体),has overturned the television industry and forced Hollywood companies like Disney to rethink their business model. And an increasing number of customers cut the cord from cable providers.
But it's not everywhere. Unlike Americans, Europeans are signing up for more cable and satellites than ever before. The market share of pay-TV in Britain will go beyond that in America this year, according to Ampere Analysis, a research company. In France and Germany it already has.

What has happened to American media missed Europe. But why One reason is price. America's cable industry may look competitive: the largest player, Comcast, has only a quarter of the market. But because it is highly localized, most homes have few choices, says Richard Broughton of Ampere. As a result, the average monthly cable cost is close to $100.British homes pay less than half the amount.
A second factor is content. American cable TV is running out of shows as studios move their best ones to their own streaming platforms(平台).In Europe, where some streamers have yet to broadcast, pay-TV companies preserve the rights to many of the most popular titles.

The last reason Europe still favors cable is that American streamers are partnering with European pay-TV companies rather than competing with them. In the race for viewers, the quickest way for streamers to rise quickly in Europe has been to join forces with satellite and cable companies. They are the ones with access to customers and the ability to deal with local marketing and ad sales.
Will cord-cutting eventually cross the Atlantic As long as Hollywood studios continue to allow European cable providers to play their programs, customers will have every reason to stick with pay-TV. In the long run, though, studios would rather bring viewers onto their own online streaming platforms,as in America.

One of the simplest ways to increase our happiness, according to science, is to take part in acts or kindness towards others. Recent studies have found that young children show greater happiness when they are sharing a tasty treat than when they are receiving the treat.
This doesn't just work with children. Adults feel happier when they engage in prosocial(利社会的)spending. For instance, one study found that the more people spent on others during a typical month (in the form of gift and charity donations),the greater they reported happiness.

What if you don't have money to give away No worries, time is just as effective.Research shows that people feel happier when they freely give away their time at the service of others. For example,an examination of over 17 studies on over 74,000 participants found volunteers had significantly greater life satisfaction and lower rates of depression than non-volunteers. This pattern has been found in over 130 countries and leads to happiness regardless of whether those countries are rich or poor.

So why does giving to others increase our happiness There are lots of psychological theories out there, but the reason might be more basic.Neuroimaging(神经影像)studies have found that giving activates(激活)the reward centers of our brain, suggesting our brains are wired to serve.
If you are able to volunteer or donate to a charitable organization, that's great. Do it. But this might be too much for some.No worries! You can add smaller acts of kindness to your daily routine. The idea behind it is if you treat others the way a happy person might do,you will end up being a happy person yourself.

We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me. I patted him to get his attention. I tried to persuade him that just being afraid of being laughed at was no reason to give up.He seemed to be a little bit surprised but he thought for a while and accepted my advice to take part in the run. I felt some kind of relief and convinced him of his capability to fulfill this ambition since he had had sufficient practice and strong determination. Then the run was about to begin.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. He looked back at me and I signaled to him with a thumb up, feeling proud of him. He smiled, took a deep breath and got ready for the run. When the run began, he ran with all his strength, in spite of his abnormal steps. Eventually,he finished the run. Nearly out of breath, he walked to me and then gave me a hug. “Thank you!” he uttered. “Without you, I would never taste such a sense of achievement of challenging myself."
