Ricky lived in a lovely, futuristic house, which had everything you could ever want. Though he didn’t help much around the house, Ricky was still very pleased when his parents bought him the latest model of robot. As soon as it arrived, off it went, cooking, cleaning, ironing, and—most importantly—gathering up clothes from Ricky’s bedroom floor. On that first day, when Ricky went to sleep, he had left his bedroom in a truly disastrous state. When he woke up the next morning, everything was perfectly clean and tidy.
In fact, it was actually “too” clean; now Ricky couldn’t find his favorite T-shirt, nor his favorite toy. However much he searched, the two things did not reappear. The same was starting to happen with other things. Ricky began to suspect the robot. He planned to spy on the robot, and began following it around the house. Finally he caught it on the spot, picking up one of Ricky’s toys to hide it.
Ricky told his parents that the robot was broken and badly programmed and asked them to have it changed. But his parents told him absolutely not; they were delighted with the new robot, and it cooked like a dream.
One day, the robot was whirring past, and heard the boy’s complaints. The robot returned with one of the boy’s toys, and some clothes for him.
“Here, sir. I did not know it was bothering you, ” said the robot.
“How could it not, you thief! You’ve been stealing my belongings for weeks!” the boy answered angrily.
“The objects were left on the floor. I therefore calculated that you did not like them. I am programmed to collect all that is not wanted, and at night I send it to people who can use it. I am a maximum efficiency machine. Were you unaware ” the robot said, with a certain pride.
Ricky started feeling ashamed. He understood that the robot was neither broken nor misprogrammed. Rather, it had been programmed extremely well!
Since then, Ricky has decided to become a “Maximum Efficiency Boy”, and put real care into how he treated his things. He kept them tidy, and made sure he didn’t have more than what was necessary. And, often, he would buy things, and take them along with his good friend, the robot, to help out those other people who needed them.
4. What is the robot meant to do
A. Do the housework. B. Take care of children.
C. Provide security services. D. Recycle used objects.
5. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 3 mean
A. The robot dreamed of being a cook. B. The robot was good at cooking.
C. The robot could serve as a cooker. D. The robot found it unrealistic to cook.
6. Why did Ricky get mad at the robot
A. He mistook it as a thief. B. He disliked the way it cleaned his room.
C. He thought it was making too much noise. D. He felt less loved by his parents since its arrival.
7. Where does the text probably come from
A. A science report. B. A science fiction story.
C. An entertainment magazine. D. A commercial advertisement.

Located within the beautiful landscape of Wisconsin’s Lake Chippewa lies a natural wonder that poses a unique challenge for the local community. This hidden wonder is none other than a giant floating island. The island, composed of plants and trees, occasionally floats around the lake, causing a significant inconvenience by blocking a vital bridge. Later, the local people proposed a solution to this problem. Every year, local boat owners work together and push the island away from the bridge.
Lake Chippewa was born in 1923 when a vast bog (沼泽) was transformed through flooding. Soon after that, many of the peat bogs started rising to the surface and became perfect growing spots for plants, with seeds carried by wind and wild birds to this floating place. Over the years, these bogs have grown plants and trees and turned into full islands. As time goes by, plants take root, and the oldest islands even have trees that act as sails when the wind blows, moving the entire floating mass around the lake.
Although the decades-old floating island does not relocate constantly, when it does, it causes trouble for the community by blocking the vital bridge that serves as the sole passage between the lake’s East and West sides. The only solution is to gather a fleet of boats, and not just one or two,but dozens of boats working together to push the island away. “It takes a community’s effort, and you must have the winds at your back to push them in,” said a resident. Moving the island also requires precision, as merely relocating (重新迁移) it a short distance may result in its return within days.
Some people have suggested blowing up the floating islands to get rid of the problem. However, the big bog in Lake Chippewa has been around for decades, and in that time a wealth of animal and plant species have made it their home. Therefore, local authorities prefer they be dealt with in a way that won’t negatively impact wildlife, highlighting the delicate balance between human convenience and environmental conservation. The annual tradition of relocating Lake Chippewa’s floating island is evidence to the coexistence of humanity and nature, a heartwarming display of community unity, and a reminder of the importance of preserving the unique habitats that enrich our world.
8. What does the underlined word “solution” in paragraph 1 refer to
A. Building a new bridge. B. Transforming the vast bog.
C. Moving the floating island away. D. Reconstructing the local community.
9. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The form action of the floating island.
B. The history of flooding in Lake Chippewa.
C. The abundance of species in Lake Chippewa.
D. The impact of the wind on the floating island.
10. What do we know about the relocation work from paragraph 3
A. It is usually finished within days.
B. It can only be carried out during windless days.
C. It is demanding in cooperation and precision.
D. It greatly disturbs the community residents’ lives.
11. Why have the local authorities refused to blow up the island
A. To save costs for local people.
B. To ensure the safety of residents.
C. To increase the bond between communities.
D. To protect the wildlife species on the island.

Like so many other good things in life, sleep is best at a right length. A multi-year study of older adults found that both short and long sleepers experienced greater cognitive (认知的) decline than people who slept a proper amount, even when the effects of early Alzheimer's disease were taken into account.
“Our study suggests that there is a middle range, or ‘sweet spot’, for total sleep time where cognitive performance is stable over time. Short and long sleep time is associated with worse cognitive performance,” said first author Brendan Lucey, an associate professor of the Washington University Sleep Medicine Center. “An unanswered question is if we can intervene to improve sleep, would that have a positive effect on their cognitive performance so they no longer decline We need more further data to answer this question.”
Lucey and colleagues turned to volunteers who participate in Alzheimer's studies through the university's Charles F. and Joanne Knight Alzheimer Disease Research Center. Such volunteers experienced annual clinical and cognitive assessments, and provided a blood sample to be tested. For this study, each participant slept with a tiny EEG monitor attached to their heads for four to six nights to measure their brain activities during sleep.
The researchers found a U-shaped relationship between sleep and cognitive decline. Overall, cognitive scores declined for the groups that slept less than 4.5 or more than 6.5 hours per night while scores stayed stable for those in the middle of the range.
The U-shaped relationship held true for measures of specific sleep phases, including rapid-eye movement (REM), or dreaming sleep and non-REM sleep. Moreover, the same is true even after adjusting for factors that can affect both sleep and cognition, such as age, sex, levels of Alzheimer's proteins. “It was particularly interesting to see that not only those with short amounts of sleep but also those with long amounts of sleep had more cognitive decline,” said Professor Beau M. Ances.
“Each person's sleep needs are unique, and people who wake up feeling rested on short or long sleep schedules should not feel forced to change their habits,” said co-senior author David Holtzman, MD. “But those who are not sleeping well should be aware that sleep problems often can be treated.”
12. What's the passage mainly about
A. The effects of Alzheimer's disease. B. The benefits of best sleep.
C. The influence of sleep time on cognition. D. The good things in life.
13. According to the passage, which sleep time is suitable
A. 4 hours. B. 6 hours.
C. 7 hours. D. 7. 5 hours.
14. What can we know about U-shaped relationship
A. The sleep time has no connection with cognitive scores.
B. The longer sleep time is, the higher cognitive scores are.
C. Cognition is related to different sleep phases.
D. It is not effective when age, sex, and so on are considered.
15. What does David Holtzman's words imply
A. Quality of sleep is the key.
B. Long time sleepers do not have cognitive decline.
C. Short sleep schedules must change their habits.
D. Both long time and shot time sleepers have sleep problems.

A huge challenge scientists and conservationists encounter is tracking species facing extinction in order to help them. ____17____. One example is the Maui dolphin, one of the rarest and most threatened dolphins in the ocean. Familiar with their summer behavior, researchers knew that there were just 54 of these mammals living off the coast of New Zealand. ____18____. The result was the extension of a marine safety place to protect their habitat.
____19____, AI is being used to enhance traditional methods of preventing hunting. Cameras record any boats that try to enter the park on Lake Itezhi-Tezhi, an illegal entry point. AI immediately detects this activity and alerts park rangers, who deal with the illegal hunters.
In Brazil, AI quickly analyzed over 150, 000 satellite images, revealing that the world’s largest tropical wetlands lost 74 percent of its surface water. ____20____
The use of AI has helped to accelerate action and increase conservationists’ ability to protect the natural world for generations to come.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文、
I had always prided myself on my sharp tongue and brilliant response whether in class debates or casual arguments. Thus, when I was selected to represent the school in the national debate series, I was naturally extremely confident of myself.
All the members in my team were good speakers. We had an experienced teacher who trained us well. But I was undoubtedly the most outstanding speaker. In each of the rounds that I debated in, all the judges selected me as the best one. This meant that my confidence was the highest by the time we found ourselves with one week to train before the finals. I had every reason to believe that I would be voted the best speaker for the debate series.
I began to be self-important about the whole business and started behaving that way with my team-mates. I would laugh at Eton’s poor debating style. I would complain of Vivian’s slow response. I saw myself as the natural debater who would be disappointed by their bad performance.
As the finals drew near, I became more and more dissatisfied with my team. I began missing practices. My teacher was worried. My teammates were panicked. However, they had no choice but to rely on me to win the finals. Even if they would love to remove me from the team they could not because there was no replacement good enough.
The day of the finals finally came. I was very excited that I was able to finally show off my debating skills. Everyone was expecting my performance. They knew that I was praised to be the one most likely to win the best speaker for the debate series.

【答案】4. A 5. B 6. A 7. B

【答案】8. C 9. A 10. C 11. D

【8题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词下文“Every year, local boat owners work together and push the island away from the bridge.(每年,当地的船主都会齐心协力,把小岛从桥上推开)”可知,当地人想到的解决办法是把这个浮岛移走。由此可知,划线词solution指的是Moving the floating island away(将浮岛移走)。故选C。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Soon after that, many of the peat bogs started rising to the surface and became perfect growing spots for plants, with seeds carried by wind and wild birds to this floating place. Over the years, these bogs have grown plants and trees and turned into full islands. As time goes by, plants take root, and the oldest islands even have trees that act as sails when the wind blows, moving the entire floating mass around the lake.(不久之后,许多泥炭沼泽开始上升到水面,成为植物的理想生长地点,种子被风和野鸟带到这个漂浮的地方。多年来,这些沼泽长出了植物和树木,变成了完整的岛屿。随着时间的流逝,植物生根发芽,最古老的岛屿上甚至有树木,当风吹起时,它们就像帆一样,把整个漂浮的物体移动到湖周围)”可知,第二段主要讲的是浮岛是如何形成的,故选A。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段““It takes a community’s effort, and you must have the winds at your back to push them in,” said a resident. Moving the island also requires precision, as merely relocating (重新迁移) it a short distance may result in its return within days.(“这需要整个社区的努力,而且你必须有顺风才能把它们推进来,”一位居民说。移动岛屿也需要精确,因为仅仅是将它移动一段距离就可能导致它在几天内返回)”可知,重新迁移浮岛对合作和精确度要求很高。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“However, the big bog in Lake Chippewa has been around for decades, and in that time a wealth of animal and plant species have made it their home. Therefore, local authorities prefer they be dealt with in a way that won’t negatively impact wildlife, highlighting the delicate balance between human convenience and environmental conservation.(然而,Chippewa湖的大沼泽已经存在了几十年,在此期间,大量的动植物物种将其作为家园。因此,当地政府希望以一种不会对野生动物产生负面影响的方式处理这些问题,强调人类便利与环境保护之间的微妙平衡)”可推知,地方当局拒绝炸毁这个岛是为了保护岛上的野生动物。故选D。
D
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. C 15. A

【答案】范文
The Book I Like Most
Among all of the books I’ve read, I couldn’t get enough of a book, Tuesdays with Morrie, written by Mitch. The story centers on a successful journalist Mitch keeping visiting his professor, Morrie, who is weakened by his severe illness. The weekly conversations between them result in a series of lessons on the meaning of life.
Although this book is about dying, it is a pleasant surprise to find that this book is filled with joy and hope. Morrie’s bravery towards the end of his life has made me value my own life more.
Morrie’s wise comments on death and life not only improves our ability to face the death, but enlighten us how to be present. It is a book that should be on everyone’s reading list.

【答案】Paragraph1:
But the reality was not something that I had ever imagined. Due to lack of training, I failed to get the key point of my speech, for which I wasn’t well prepared. I didn’t know what to say and my mind just went blank. I was so nervous that I just stood there. I felt all the people present were looking at me with strange eyes. I was very embarrassed and shed big big sweat.
Paragraph 2:
Suddenly, a comforting hand from behind held mine. It came from one of my teammates. He whispered to me, “Don’t be nervous and don’t be afraid. All of us are here to support you and cheer you up. I’m here to help you.” At this time, I realized the mistakes I had made before. I shouldn’t be too confident in myself. I should have humbly trained more with my teammates. At the moment, I was forgiven by my teammates. I pulled myself together, quickly straightened out my ideas and finished my speech. I saw all my teammates applaud for me and I was moved to tears.
