Researchers who examined DNA from famous German musician Ludwig van Beethoven have found something new about his health.
They found that he had a risk for liver(肝脏) disease. The DNA also showed that Beethoven caught the virus hepatitis B(乙肝病毒) in the last months of his life. The virus hurts the liver. The findings suggest Beethoven's liver problems were enough to cause the liver failure widely believed to have killed him. The musician was also believed to have been a heavy drinker, which can influence the liver.
The musician himself wrote that he wanted doctors to study his health problems after he died. Axel Schmidt is a researcher who helped lead the research. He said that Beethoven's sicknesses had “sometimes prevented his creative work". Schmidt added that for many doctors, "it has always been a mystery" what exactly killed him.
Since his death, scientists have long tried to piece together Beethoven's medical history. And they have offered many explanations for his many health conditions. But new examination technology and methods now make it possible to revisit(再次讨论) health and death information by studying ancient DNA. The DNA were collected from hair cut from Beethoven's head.
Getting enough genetic(遗传的) material was difficult because DNA in hair gets cut up into very small pieces. But finally, after using up almost 3 meters of Beethoven's hair, the team finished it.
The question of what caused Beethoven's hearing loss remains unanswered, said Ohio State University's Dr Cooper. He said that the mystery might continue forever because DNA can not show us everything about our health. However, Cooper added that the mystery is part of what makes Beethoven so interesting and popular. “The fact that we can't know is OK," he said.
What did researchers find by examining Beethoven's DNA
A. Why he kept fit in the last months.
B. How he caught the virus hepatitis B
C. What might have caused his death.
25. What difficulty did scientists have in examining Beethoven's DNA
A. The technology was out of date.
B. It was hard to collect enough DNA.
C. There wasn't enough time to do research.
26. It is still a mystery to people according to the passage.
A. why Beethoven couldn't hear
B. what stopped Beethoven from creating music
C. how many explanations there were for Beethoven's death
27. What does Cooper think of Beethoven's mystery
A. It may live a long time.
B. It will be cleared up soon.
C. It is a headache for scientists.

In the doorway, I looked closely at the face of my 23-year-old son, Daniel. We were saying goodbye. In a few hours he would be flying to France. It was a transitional(过渡的) time in Daniel’s life, a passage from college into the adult world. I wanted to leave him some words that would have some meaning, some importance beyond the moment. But nothing came from my mouth. I stood quietly, looking into the searching eyes of my son, which I knew was not the first time I had let such a moment pass.
When Daniel was five, I took him to the bus stop on his first day of kindergarten(幼儿园), I felt the fear in hand holding mine as the bus turned the corner. He looked at me — as he did now. “What is it going to be like Dad Can I do it Will I be OK ” Then he walked up the bus steps and
disappeared inside. The bus drove away, and I said nothing.
Ten years later, a similar scene played itself out. I drove him to college in Virginia. As I started to make the trip home, I tried to think of something to say to give him courage and confidence as he started this new period of life. I left, only mumbling(喃喃自语), “Hope everything goes better, Dan.”
I once told Daniel about my great regret that I didn’t take a year off to travel. Daniel thought about this. After graduation, he worked as a waiter, a bike messenger and a painter. Now he had enough money for Paris. The night before he left, I tossed and turned in bed. I was trying to find out something to say. Nothing came.
What does it matter over the course of lifetime if a father never tells a son what he really thinks of him I knew that it did matter. At that time, as I stood before Daniel, I suddenly gave him a hug. It was nothing. And yet, it was everything. I was sure he knew that.
28. Where was Daniel going that day in the story
A. He was going to beach. B. He was going to France. C. He was going to Virginia.
29. Why did the father stand quietly without talking to his son
A. Because his son wanted to talk to his mother.
B. Because his son left home hurriedly to travel with his friends.
C. Because he might be a person not good at expressing himself.
30. Which is the correct order of the following events
① Daniel’s dad hugged him.
② Daniel’s dad left, only mumbling something.
③ Daniel made some money for his travel for Paris.
④ Daniel walked up the bus steps and disappeared inside
A. ①③④② B. ④②③① C. ③④①②
31. Which is the best title of this passage
A. Keep alone. B. Say Goodbye. C. Silent Love.
D
Say a Warm Farewell with a Willow Branch
In ancient China, willow branches(柳树枝) were often used as a parting gift between friends and family members. Do you know why willow branches are a symbol of farewell(告别)
One reason is that willow trees are strong. They can survive(生存) in any soil, wet or dry, north or south. Because of this unique feature, giving a willow branch is a way to say goodbye to loved ones. And it tells them you hope they will easily adapt to their new living environment.
Meanwhile, in Chinese, the pronunciation for the willow tree “liu(柳)” is similar to the character “liu(留)”, which means asking someone to stay. So offering a willow branch is like asking the other party(对方) to stay, even though we know that they must leave.
It’s said that this custom became popular during the Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 220). At that time, Baqiao, a bridge in Chang’an, today’s Xi’an, was a common place to say goodbye. People often stopped there and handed willow branches to departing(离开的) people.
Willow branches, as a symbol of farewell, are often mentioned in poems. Many poets often felt the sadness of separation when they saw somebody off. In The Book of Poetry, there is the famous line “When I left there, willows shed tears.” At the time of the Tang and Song Dynasties, such poems were common as travelling was easy at that time. For example, Wang Wei wrote “The willows by the hotel look so fresh and green,” in his famous poem A Fond Farewell to a Friend.
32. How did people say goodbye to the loved ones in ancient China
A. By visiting Baqiao, a bridge in Chang’an.
B. By offering a willow branch to them.
C. By writing some poems and giving some money.
33. What does the underlined phrase “adapt to” mean in Paragraph 2
A. 适应 B. 改变 C. 调整
34. Why did people offer a willow branch to departing people
A. To show that they wanted them to stay.
B. To say goodbye in a traditional way.
C. To express hopes in the future.
35. What feelings does the following line show
“When I left there, willows shed tears.”
A. It shows the expectation of the poet.
B. It shows the happiness of leaving there.
C. It shows the sadness of separation.
36. What can we infer from the passage
A. Willow trees are too strong to survive in any environment.
B. Offering a willow branch is like asking the other party to leave.
C. Willows are commonly used in poems to describe farewell.

Medical tourism(旅游) is traveling to another country for medical care. It has been growing in popularity in America for years. This kind of travel is especially popular with people who have no health plans that need much money. 37 They also might want to get treatment(治疗) from a doctor in another country who speaks their language.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says millions of people from the US travel to other countries for care each year. However, the CDC warns medical tourism could be risky depending on the country and the medical center. Among the risks are diseases, bad quality(质量) of care, language difficulties and follow-up (后续的) care difficulties. 38
To reduce risks, the CDC advises people to look for a health care provider or a travel medicine provider before making the trip. Lydia Gan, a professor, notes that care providers can provide some other services besides medical treatment. 39
The CDC also advises patients to research health care providers. Edelheit, head of the Medical Tourism Association, says that patients should learn about care quality before considering prices. Once patients choose a country and provider, the CDC advises them to bring medical records and to tell medical workers any health problems. After treatment, get copies of all new medical records. 40 The risk for patients may not end after treatment. If someone has medical problems after returning home, tell the doctor about the care received during a trip.
