教学实施过程:
1. Have students read the introduction before the excerpt on page 53 and answer
the following questions.
(1) What is Hemingway well thought of for
He is well thought of for his unique writing style.
(2) What is Hemingway good at describing
He is extremely good at describing the adventures of tough men.
2. Have students read the excerpt and answer the following questions.
(1) What does the excerpt describe
It describes the struggle between the old man and the fish. The old man
struggled to conquer the fish while the fish struggled to escape.
(2) Did the old man nearly catch the fish How do you know
Yes, he did. In line 9 it says “For just a moment the fish turned a little
on his side.”and in line 25 it tells us “On the next turn, he nearly had him.”
(3) When the old man saw the fish turned a little on his side (line 9), what
did he say And in what emotion did he say that
“I moved him,” the old man said. “I moved him then.” He was excited to 批 注
see that he was able to pull the fish.
3. Have students answer the following questions.
(1) What do you find when you compare the old man’s feelings with his words
or thoughts in the excerpt
His physical condition was worse and worse while his willpower became stronger
and stronger.
(2) Would you give up or not if you were the old man Why or why not
I wouldn’t give up because I firmly believe I could catch the fish if I
persisted. Nothing can defeat me except myself.
4. Have students answer the first question of part A on page 54.
The old man is determined and positive. His long struggle with the fish shows
his determination. His inner thoughts, like, “Yes you are, he told himself.
You’re good for ever”, illustrate his positive attitude.
5. Have students share with others their favourite parts of the excerpt and
give reasons.
I like lines 12—15 best. In the excerpt the old man sailed on the vast sea
by himself for such a long time, without anyone around to talk to or to help
him. When he fainted, he still held onto the great fish and encouraged his body
to stay strong,“Pull, hands. Hold up, legs.” Such strong self-encouragement
helped him insist on completing the challenging task that almost diminished
his hope and nearly defeated him. By reading these lines I experienced his
determination to never give up, and it has made me feel stronger and determined
when I face challenges too.
