The sun is shinning. I get on No. 151 bus. I'm heading for my office. The sight on the bus is striking: People sit so close together, using those thin sheets of newspapers to keep their distance.
As the bus approaches the National Park, a voice suddenly rings out, "Attention! Attention! This is your driver speaking."
No one speaks. We look at the back of the driver's head. His voice carries authority. "Put your papers down. All of you." The newspapers come down and they are placed on our laps.
"Now, turn and face the person next to you. Go ahead." Amazingly, we all do it. Still, no one smiles. Just follow the order.
I face an old woman, her head wrapped tightly in a red scarf. I see her nearly everyday. Our eyes meet. We wait for the next order from the driver. We smile to each other. There is a feeling of relief. The barrier(隔阂)has been broken. We cannot help saying, "Good morning, neighbor."
It is not so hard after all. Some of us repeat it. Others shake hands. Many laugh. The bus driver says nothing more. Slowly, I hear laughter, a warm sound I have never heard before on the bus.
When we reach my stop, I say good-bye to my seatmate, and then jump from the doorstep. As No. 151 bus drives away, I smile as I watch the happy faces of the passengers. This day is starting off better than most.

Randy was told that there was a very tall tree on Vancouver Island. The tree was said to be 314 feet tall. That would make it the tallest tree in Canada. Randy started to find the tree.
But someone else found it first. It was found by a logger(伐木工). Loggers wanted to cut down Canada's tallest tree and all the trees around it.
Randy made a path in the forest so people could see the tallest tree. The tree was so big and beautiful that it would bring them enjoyment. More and more people wanted to save that forest. Thanks to these people, that forest is now a park. Canada's tallest tree is still there.

Nao, a small robot, looks like a person. If Nao begged you not to shut it off, what would you do
Scientists did a study to see how people treat robots that act like people. Eighty-nine people volunteered for the study. They were asked to help to improve Nao's social skills by finishing two tasks with it.
The tasks with the robot didn't matter, though. What the scientists really wanted to see was how the participants reacted once the tasks were over. They were asked to talk with Nao and finally shut Nao off but it was not easy to do. Some people did not want to turn the robot off while others took a long time to do it.
People often communicate with non-human objects such as TVs and computers nowadays. But robots seem more like humans. Robots can show social characters themselves, like speaking with human voices or taking the shape of a human body. Scientists said people might have seen Nao's cries as a sign of independent thought. In turn, this could have led people to see the robot as having the human-like character.
For thousands of years, humans lived in a world where they were the only ones who could have conversations. Our brains learned to react to social situations in a certain way. But our brains are not used to telling the difference between real people and fake people. The robot expressed feelings and desires and that got people to want to treat the robot as if it were alive.
32. Why did scientists use Nao in the study
A. To communicate with humans. B. To improve people's social skills.
C. To help people finish their daily tasks. D. To learn about how people react to robots.
33. What did participants do when asked to turn off Nao __________
A. All of them refused to turn it off. B. All of them found it hard to operate it.
C. Not all of them took action immediately. D. All of them followed the order soon.
pared with TVs, robots__________.
A. often depend on humans B. are more similar to humans
C. have independent thought D. know well about different voices
35. What is the main idea of the passage __________
A. How people treat human-like robots. B. Robots will replace humans.
C. The relationship between humans and robots. D. Compare robots with TVs and computers.
