Thematic context: human and society——different opinions about how to have the Spring Festival family dinner. Genre: Letter Discourse analysis: The material in this section are two letters from readers in a column in which the two readers with different ages and occupation hold different ideas to the Spring Festival family dinner. a software engineer believes eating out is convenient and don t change the love between five family members, while a retired teacher considers the process of preparing the family dinner together matters most. Through the practice of this section, students can be motivated to think deeply the meaning of traditional festivals and whether the traditional customs should be changed.
Analysis of Students
Students of this generation are raised under the boom in economy and social media, which changed the traditional customs a lot. Besides there are few chances for them to enjoy a big family dinner prepared together and to understand the family bond and underlying meaning of spring festival. Students have their own ideas. Their logical thinking and critical thinking have developed on the basis of early learning.
Teaching Objectives After learning this class, students can: To predict the main ideas of the passage by the title and the illustration. To get the readers’ view points and distinguish a fact and an opinion. To make their own evaluation and judgments on different viewpoints. To promote the understanding of cultural connotation and to find the proper way to carry forward traditional Chinese culture.
Key points To analyze and conclude the causes of the two different views. To make their own comment and judgment logically.
Difficult points To comment on a certain cultural phenomenon by giving sensible opinions and facts

Step 1 Engagement Do a survey about how the students celebrate the Spring Festival. Make their own choices according to the questions. To lead students into the learning topic. To activate their background knowledge.
