A
It seems that we just can’t get enough of roller coasters. Today we look at some top amusement parks and the roller coasters which have helped make them famous.
Holiday World
It is a family park that resists the exciting atmosphere of its competitors and instead offers a more relaxing and friendly experience. Rare in that it is privately owned and it has many features other parks can’t match. There is lots of entertainment for youngsters, and the park’s family-friendly policy offers free entry to the water park, reasonable food prices and unlimited soft drinks free of charge.
Lake Compounce
Lake Compounce, one of America’s more traditional parks, is a rare find indeed. As the oldest continuously operating amusement park in the US, it has been a popular family spot since 1846. Like many old-time parks, it witnessed the danger of being closed. Luckily, in 1977, a well-known company gave its revival with new rides appealing to many new fans.
Knott’s Berry Farm
As one of America’s favourite theme parks, Knott’s has something for everyone. For those seeking a breathtaking rush, try the roller coaster, GhostRider or the Xcelerator. GhostRider is the single largest attraction in amusement park history and one of the longest and tallest wooden roller coasters in the world. If you are after something less exciting, go visit the heart of Knott’s, Ghost Town, for a glance of life in the Wild West of the 1880s. With its cowboys, steam trains and historic buildings-many transported from mining towns-Ghost Town will let you relive a piece of the past.
Islands of Adventure
In the style of Walt Disney World, Islands of Adventure is divided into themed “lands”. Unlike the sugar-coated Magic Kingdom, however, IOA features attractions promising to set the heart racing. While the Spiderman is fantastic, you haven’t truly lived until you’ve experienced The Incredible Hulk’s wild and unique uphill launch. The effect is like being trapped inside an airplane that’s flying out of control.
1. What is special about Holiday World
A. It provides free food. B. It owns the latest ride technology.
C. It belongs to an individual. D. It creates the exciting atmosphere.
2. Which park takes visitors back to earlier times
A. Holiday World. B. Lake Compounce.
C. Knott’s Berry Farm. D. Islands of Adventure.
3. Why does Islands of Adventure differ from Magic Kingdom

C. It has more visitors waiting in line. D. It provides a very exciting experience.
B
Growing up, my grandparents bought a second home among a small forest in Arkansas and would bring me there every single summer. I would spend a lot of time outside there following my grandfather around while he did yard work. We would collect cool-looking rocks and refill the hummingbird feeders.
I always remember my grandparents calling me over to the window when a deer family was in the yard or a few hummingbirds were at the feeders so that I could watch them. I would explore around in the yard by myself sometimes to look for interesting rocks and if I was lucky I would find a turtle. If I did find a turtle, my grandfather would put it in the kiddy pool for me to observe for a few minutes. I was always amazed by these creatures. After I finished observing the turtle, my grandfather would pick it back up and return it to the bush I found it in. I would watch in amazement as it slowly stuck its legs out and crawled back under.
I always felt very at peace at my grandparents’ home. It was quiet and full of interesting natural things I never got to see in Illinois. They disturbed the land around them as little as possible and didn’t see it as nuisance (令人讨厌的东西), rather a beautiful view.
As Aldo Leopold, an American scientist, puts it, we should take the time to appreciate and observe the natural world around us. When we do this, we find it brings us happiness and has a great value beyond just that of resources. Conservation(n.保护) of the natural world is important because we are dependent upon it for life. We cannot worsen such a bountiful provider at such a rate in which it will never return to anything like what it once was. Our experiences with nature are what will drive us to reach this conclusion, if only everyone took the time to really involve themselves in it.
4. What does the writer mainly talk about in Paragraph 2
A. His interest in rocks and animals.
B. His connection with natural world.
C. His daily routine in summer vacation.
D. His close relationship with Grandparents.
5. What does “a bountiful provider” refer to in the last paragraph
A. Nature. B. Illinois. C. The small forest. D. Grandparents’ home.
6. What is the writer most likely to get across
A. Past experiences should be treasured.
B. Nature offers man a journey of discovery.
C. Quality time with family is of great value.
D. Into the nature, you will know how precious it is.
7. In which forum would you most likely find the text
A. Family Matters B. On the Road C. At One with Nature D. The Economist
C
A simple gesture can be formed into a child’s memory so quickly that it will cause the child to give a false answer to a question accompanied by that gesture. A new finding suggests that parents, social workers, psychologists and lawyers should be careful with their hands as well as their words.
Gestures can be as informative as speech, but hand gestures are so common that we rarely notice we’re using them.
“While memories of both adults and children are easy to react to suggestions, those of children are known to be particularly influenced.” said lead researcher Sara Broaders of Northwestern University, “Kids are used to looking to adults to tell events for them and can be misled even if not intentionally.”
Previous research, for example, has shown that detail-loaded questions often cause false answers; when asked, say “Did you drink juice at the picnic ”, the child is likely to say “yes” even if no juice had been available. It is not that the child is consciously lying, but rather the detail is quickly formed into his or her memory.
To avoid this problem, social workers have long been advised to ask children only open-ended questions, such as “What did you have at the picnic ”. But an open-ended question paired with a gesture, briefly meaning a juice box, is treated like a detailed question. That is, children become likely to answer falsely.
And it isn’t just a few kids: 77% of children gave at least one piece of false information when a detail was suggested by an ordinary gesture. Gestures may also become more popular when talking with non-fluent language users, such as little kids. Broaders said, “As hand movements can impart meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases, it certainly seems reasonable that adults would gesture more with children.”
In general, Broaders advises parents and other adults to try to be aware of your hands when questioning a child about an event. Otherwise, you might be getting answers that don’t reflect what actually happened.
8 What do we know about gestures according to the text
A. They are rarely used by people.
B. They have not any function at all.
C. They have a certain effect on children.
D. They are often used by social workers.
9. Why are kids easy to be misled by gestures according to Sara Broaders
A. Children are easy to tell lies.
B. Their memories are affected easily.
C. These gestures are very attractive.
D. These gestures are used frequently.
10. What does the underlined word “impart” in Paragraph 6 mean
A. Pass on. B. Tell apart. C. Appeal to. D. Break down.
11. What would be the best title for the text
A. Gestures—a Useful Way of Education
B. Gestures Can Mislead Children
C. Gestures Mean Adults’ Directions
D. Gestures Affect Children Too Much
D
“In English, my speech is very polite, with a relaxed tone, always saying ‘please’ and ‘excuse me.’ When I speak Greek, I start talking more rapidly, with a tone of anxiety and in a kind of rude way…”
“If the words resonate (共鸣)with you, you’ve probably already experienced the surprising, odd phenomenon of feeling like having different personalities when speaking different languages. How is that possible Could it be that bilinguals (双语者)change their personality when they change language After all, the Czech proverb does say, “Learn a new language and get a new soul. ”
In my book on bilingualism, Life with Two Languages, I noted first of all that monocultural (单文化的)bilinguals who make up the majority of bilinguals in the world are not really affected by this phenomenon. Although bi-or multilingual, they are in fact members of just one culture. But what about bicultural bilinguals I proposed that what is seen as a change in personality is most probably simply a shift in attitudes and behaviors that correspond to a shift in situation or context, independent of language. Basically, the bicultural bilinguals in academic studies were behaving bicultural, that is, adapting to the context they were in. Different contexts and domains trigger different impressions, attitudes and behaviors.
Imagine the way we speak to a best friend and the behavior that we adopt. Then, think of how all this changes when we are speaking the same language to a superior (e. g. a school head, religious authority or employer). We behave differently and sometimes change attitudes and feelings even though the language is the same. The same is true for bilinguals except that here the language may be different. It is the environment, the culture, and the people one talks to that cause bicultural bilinguals to change attitudes, feelings and behaviors (along with language)-and not their language as such. In essence, there does not seem to be a direct causal relationship between language and personality.
12. What function does the first paragraph serve
A. To support the writer’s argument.
B. To introduce the topic of the text.
C. To present a general knowledge fact.
D. To provide background information.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The meaning of bilingual study.
B. Cultural influence on languages.
C Attitude and proper behavior.
D. The truth of “personality shift”.
14. How would the writer probably explain the speaker’s behavior in paragraph 1
A. His fluency in English is not as great as that of Greek.
B. His personality is affected by the language he uses.
C. He speaks English where manners are expected.
D. He speaks Greek when he talks to his superiors.
15. Bicultural bilinguals change attitudes when they ________.
A. change their languages
B. change their behavior
C. are in search of social status
D. are in different situations

When communicating with others, we often focus on what we should say. ____16____ Listening well means not just understanding the words or the information being communicated, but also understanding the emotions the speaker is trying to convey. The following are tips for becoming an active listener.
Focus fully on the speaker. You can’t listen in an active way if you’re constantly checking your phone. ____17____ You need to stay focused on the moment-to-moment experience in order to pick up the important nonverbal cues in a conversation. If you find it hard to concentrate on some speakers, try repeating their words over in your head-it’ll reinforce their message and help you stay focused.
Display your interest in what’s being said by using body language. Nod occasionally, smile at the person, and make sure your posture is open and inviting. ____18____
Avoid interrupting or trying to redirect the conversation to your concerns by saying something like, “you think that’s bad, let me tell you what happened to me.” ____19____ You can’t concentrate on what someone’s saying if you’re forming what you’re going to say next. Often, the speaker can read your facial expressions and know that your mind’s elsewhere.
_____20_____ In order to communicate effectively with someone, you don’t have to like them or agree with their ideas, values or opinions. However, you do need to set aside your judgement and hold back blame and criticism in order to fully understand them. The most difficult communication, when successfully performed, can often lead to an unlikely connection with someone.
A. Try to set aside judgement.
B. Be aware of individual differences.
C. It will make you feel more self-confident.
D. Listening is not the same as waiting for your turn to talk.
E. Encourage the speaker to continue with “yes”or “uh huh”.
F. Thinking about something else also implies you are not an active listener.
G. However, effective communication is less about talking and more about listening.

THE STONE IN THE ROAD
Once upon a time, there was a king who ruled a small kingdom. However, he was not content and always dreamed of expanding his territory. He tried every means to make his kingdom more powerful but ended up with little progress. Later he realized that a powerful country greatly relied on its national quality. He thought, “Nothing good can come to a nation whose people only complain and expect others to solve their problems.” For him, it was a crucial task to find a way out. One day, an idea occurred to him that he could do something to test and teach his people.
Early one morning, the king disguised himself and went to a local village. He placed a large stone in the middle of the main street and hid some gold coins under the stone. He made it a rule that anyone removing the stone could get the coins. Then he hid behind a huge maple tree and watched.
Soon the villagers began their daily routine and came to the street one after another. The first person down the street was a milkman with his cart. He crashed into the stone, spilling the milk everywhere. “What fool put this stone here ” he shouted. He picked himself up and angrily went away.
After a while, a group of women came along, each balancing a pot of water on her head. One woman tripped over the stone and her water pot went crashing to the ground. She picked herself up and limped away in tears. Neither she nor her friends thought about moving the stone out of the road.
Then came more people. The king watched all morning, only to find that those people complained about the stone, but nobody made an attempt to move it. The king was in despair. “Is there no one in this village who feels any responsibility to keep their neighbors from harm ” Shaking his head, he decided to turn back.

They disturbed the land around them as little as possible and didn’t see it as nuisance (令人讨厌东西), rather a beautiful view.
B 5. A 6. D 7. C
根据第二段的主要内容“I always remember my grandparents calling me over to the window when a deer family was in the yard or a few hummingbirds were at the feeders so that I could watch them. I would watch in amazement as it slowly stuck its legs out and crawled back under.(我总是记得,当院子里有一窝鹿,或者喂食器里有几只蜂鸟时,祖父母会把我叫到窗前,让我看它们。
根据上一句话“When we do this, we find it brings us happiness and has a great value beyond just that of resources. Conservation(n.保护) of the natural world is important because we are dependent upon it for life.(当我们这样做的时候,我们发现它给我们带来了快乐,并且有着比资源更大的价值。自然世界的保护是重要的,因为我们的生活依赖于它)”可知,自然界给我们提供了很多资源,我们的生活依赖于它,结合划线单词所在句子“We cannot worsen such a bountiful provider at such a rate in which it will never return to anything like what it once was.(我们不能让这样a bountiful provider变得更糟,以至于它永远不会恢复到以前的状态。)” 故选A项。
根据最后一段的前两句话“As Aldo Leopold, an American scientist, puts it, we should take the time to appreciate and observe the natural world around us. When we do this, we find it brings us happiness and has a great value beyond just that of resources.(正如美国科学家阿尔多·利奥波德所说,我们应该花时间欣赏和观察我们周围的自然世界。当我们这样做时,我们发现它给我们带来了快乐,并具有超越资源的巨大价值)”和最后一句“Our experiences with nature are what will drive us to reach this conclusion, if only everyone took the time to really involve themselves in it.(如果每个人都花时间真正参与其中,我们与大自然的经历将促使我们得出这个结论)”可知,作者想告诉我们:走进大自然,你会知道它是多么珍贵。

A simple gesture can be formed into a child’s memory so quickly that it will cause the child to give a false answer to a question accompanied by that gesture. A new finding suggests that parents, social workers, psychologists and lawyers should be careful with their hands as well as their words.
Gestures can be as informative as speech but hand gestures are so common that we rarely notice we’re using them.
8. What do we know about gestures according to the text
A. They are rarely used by people.
B. They have not any function at all.
C. They have a certain effect on children.
D. They are often used by social workers.
9. Why are kids easy to be misled by gestures according to Sara Broaders
A. Children are easy to tell lies.
B. Their memories are affected easily.
C. These gestures are very attractive.
D. These gestures are used frequently.
10. What does the underlined word “impart” in Paragraph 6 mean
A. Pass on. B. Tell apart. C. Appeal to. D. Break down.
11. What would be the best title for the text
A. Gestures—a Useful Way of Education
B. Gestures Can Mislead Children
C. Gestures Mean Adults’ Directions
D. Gestures Affect Children Too Much
C 9. B 10. A 11. B

根据第一段中“A simple gesture can be formed into a child’s memory so quickly that it will cause the child to give a false answer to a question accompanied by that gesture.(一个简单的手势可以很快地形成孩子的记忆,它会导致孩子对伴随着这个手势被问的问题给出错误的答案。)”
根据第一段中“ A simple gesture can be formed into a child’s memory so quickly that it will cause the child to give a false answer to a question accompanied by that gesture. (一个简单的手势可以很快形成一个孩子的记忆,它会导致孩子对带着手势被问的问题给出一个错误的答案。)”和第三段“'While memories of both adults and children are easy to react to suggestions, those of children are known to be particularly influenced.' said lead researcher Sara Broaders of Northwestern University, (“虽然大人和孩子的记忆都很容易对建议做出反应,但众所周知,孩子的记忆尤其会受到影响。”西北大学首席研究员Sara Broaders说)”可知,Sara Broaders认为孩子的记忆很容易受到影响,这导致孩子们很容易被手势所误导,故选B。
【10题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线单词上文“Gestures may also become more popular when talking with non-fluent language users, such as little kids.(在与不流利的语言使用者(如小孩)交谈时,手势也可能变得更加流行。)”和划线单词所在句子“Broaders said, “As hand movements can impart meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases, it certainly seems reasonable that adults would gesture more with children.”(Broaders说,“由于手势可以......不熟悉的单词和短语的意思,因此大人们更多地与孩子做手势显然是合理的。”)”可知,在与不流利的语言使用者(如小孩)交谈时,手势也可能变得更加流行,这时因为手势能传递一些信息,即能传递不熟悉的单词和短语的意思,这样能让对方更好地理解,由此可推知,划线单词“impart”意为“传递”与A项“Pass on(传递)”意思一样,故选A。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“A simple gesture can be formed into a child’s memory so quickly that it will cause the child to give a false answer to a question accompanied by that gesture. A new finding suggests that parents, social workers, psychologists and lawyers should be careful with their hands as well as their words.( 一个简单的手势可以很快形成一个孩子的记忆,它会导致孩子对带着手势被问的问题给出一个错误的答案。一项新的发现表明,父母、社会工作者、心理学家和律师在说话的同时,也应该注意自己的双手。)”可知,文章主要介绍了手势会误导孩子,所以家长在询问孩子某件事时应该注意自己的手势,B项“Gestures Can Mislead Children(手势会误导孩子)”最适合做文章的标题,故选B。
D
“In English, my speech is very polite, with a relaxed tone, always saying ‘please’ and ‘excuse me.’ When I speak Greek, I start talking more rapidly, with a tone of anxiety and in a kind of rude way…”
“If the words resonate (共鸣)with you you’ve probably already experienced the surprising, odd phenomenon of feeling like having different personalities when speaking different languages.
C. Attitude and proper behavior.

由上文“Focus fully on the speaker. You can’t listen in an active way if you’re constantly checking your phone. (把注意力完全集中在说话者身上。如果你一直在检查手机,你就无法以积极的方式收听)”可知,这里主要讲看手机会让你无法集中注意力听说话者说什么。而F项Thinking about something else also implies you are not an active listener.(思考其它事情也意味着你不是一个积极的倾听者)符合语境,其中also有承上作用,本句说明另一种不是一个积极的倾听者的情况。故选F项。
由上文“Display your interest in what’s being said by using body language. Nod occasionally, smile at the person, and make sure your posture is open and inviting. (用肢体语言表达你对所说内容的兴趣。偶尔点头,对对方微笑,并确保你的姿势是开放的和有吸引力的)”可知,这里主要讲用肢体语言表示对所说内容的兴趣,而E项Encourage the speaker to continue with “yes” or “uh huh”.(鼓励说话者继续说“是”或“嗯哼”)符合语境,其中with “yes” or “uh huh”与上文Display your interest对应,有承上作用。故选E项。

Just then, the king saw a young girl coming along. She had been working in the field all morning. Tired as she was, she stopped to move the stone out of the way when seeing it. She thought, “This stone is a danger to anyone who comes down the street after dark.” With all her might and a great deal of effort, she finally managed to move it to the street side. Imagine her surprise when she saw the gold coins where the stone had been! But, as an honest girl, she didn’t want to take them away.
Just then, the king stepped out from behind the tree. Seeing this, the girl felt shocked and said, “Oh sir, does this gold belong to you If not, we surely must find the owner, for he will certainly miss it.” The king said, “My dear, it’s mine. I put it in the road and moved the stone over it. Now the gold is yours, because you are the only person who has learnt the lesson I wanted to teach my people.” To his relief, the girl didn’t keep it for herself but decided to donate it to the village school.
