I. Learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
review the genre knowledge of the news report by awakening previous knowledge;
outline the main idea of the news report through the finding of key information in each part;
appreciate the qualities of Tu Youyou, visualize the procedures of her experimental procedures and evaluate the contributions of her through in-depth analysis;
apprehend the crucial importance of building a community of a shared future for mankind.

IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Background awareness: stimulating reading interest and awakening cultural knowledge
T guides students to recite the Chinese version of the poem from The Book of Songs after presenting the English version.

Step 2 Structure analysis: reviewing genre knowledge of the news report

Step 3 Content analysis: skimming for the main idea of each part and explaining how to find it.
T presents the 4 parts of this passage and asks students to generalize the main idea of each part, employing the first paragraph as the example.

Step 4 In-depth analysis: summarizing Tu Youyou’s qualities, generalizing her research procedures and clarifying her contributions
T asks students to match the problems faced during Tu’s experiment and the solutions springing to her mind.
T offers 7 adjectives and asks students to choose 5 ones that can best describe Tu.

Step 5 Critical thinking: deepening the understanding of the significance of qinghaosu and the hidden awareness.
Chances are slim that the malaria will break out in China, thus some people find it hard to understand the contributions of qinghaosu. What is your opinion

Step 6 Summary: consolidating the three aspects discussed about in this passage.
T informs students of the event organized by BBC which was to choose “the greatest persons in 20th century” and Tu Youyou is included in this list and presents the prize announcement to further understand this great female scientist.
【设计意图:伟大人物之所以伟大,是因为他所具备的特点使他能为更广泛意义的社会需要服务。如果用衡量拯救多少人的生命来衡量一个人的伟大,那屠呦呦无疑是历史上最伟大的科学家之一。借用BBC评选20世纪最伟大人物时对屠呦呦的评价,回望文章内容的三个角度,总结全文的同时进一步感知人物形象。】
Step 6 Homework: reflecting on students’ dreams and inspiring them to pursue their dream guided by great people
